First The Menu Bait-and-Switch Their website menu and a customer-posted menu are identical both promise pita bread and tzatziki with entrees. We ordered based on that. When we called after getting home asking where these items were, they claimed it was "an old menu posted by a customer." Except their website/menu online says the same thing. Either fix your menus or stop lying to customers. The Portions were pathetic when told they were good sized and oh man the food was Flavorless! For $79 + tip, we got portions embarrassingly small. The grape leaves? Cold, wet, and bland could barely eat three. The rice was lifeless. The $37 "Fish of the Day" tilapia had ZERO flavor and no lemon even basic Mediterranean cooking demands lemon. The $30 salmon kabob was mediocre-sized and barely filling. Everything tasted like it was prepared with zero seasoning and zero effort and no soul. We had to season our own food at home. Our server was too busy with personal conversations to help properly. When handing us our to-go food, she literally said, "I didn't put gratuity on there but you guys can if you want" like she was doing us a favor by separating the hot items from the cold. We tipped anyway because we're good Samaritans when it comes to eating out. When we complained by phone, the response was hollow: "I'll let the Owner know to fix it" the only positive thing: Location is easy to find. That's literally it. The building is rundown, interior cramped with tables crammed together, decor is mediocre at best. Do yourself a favor and skip this place. Better Mediterranean restaurants exist all over Destin. May be the best shaved gyro platter I've had in my life. Enormous portions tender juicy and seasoned wonderfully. I asked to substitute Yukon mashed potatoes instead of rice; also excellent with authentic fresh potatoes and buttery taste. Salad had a light dressing that satisfied, not too heavy to cover or dominate the flavor. Service was friendly and expert , helping to choose. A lot of reviews mention this restaurant not being great aesthetically, however, I disagree. I think it is cute and the definition of a small hole in the wall- a true gem! This is one of the best Mediterranean restaurants I've been to and offers something different compared to the surrounding restaurants in the area. The portions were HUGE, the flavors were authentic, the gyro meat was the best I've ever had. I started lunch with their lentil soup + a side of pita. Delicious. My husband had the Chicken Tava. The chicken was tender and flavored with red peppers, garlic, green peppers, etc over a bed of rice and also paired with a huge Greek salad. I had the gyro platter. The meat was well cooked, extremely flavorful, served over rice and again a huge Greek salad. I split the portion and had half for lunch and half for dinner. I had grilled chicken breast and grilled salmon, it is not grilled, it all came out very oily. They don't even have an actual grill. Later the waitress told us this. They only have a flat top so the proteins are all oiled up and fried basically. The salad had too much oil as well. Not even sure what oil they use but probably a cheap crappy one. The filet mignon had no taste of good steak . It was plain. Like a cheap choice cut. Waitress told us that when the restaurant moves they will have an actual fire grill. This place is such a good find! It's a pretty small restaurant but the food is so good. We got two gyro sandwiches, butter filet mignon, and some tzatziki dip. Everything was so good and fresh. The portions are pretty large as well. There's only one server for all the tables but he's attentive and nice. We've always loved Red Onion and have been there about ten times, often bringing family and friends along. The food is consistently great, and the restaurant has a lot of potential. Unfortunately, our experiences are often overshadowed by interactions with the manager/server, Darla. Each time we've encountered her, she has been dismissive, unhelpful, and made us feel unwelcome. Guests we've brought with us have also noticed the same behavior, which is disheartening when we're excited to share a favorite spot. In addition, the restaurant enforces an unusually high number of strict rules, such as requiring the entire order to be placed at once, not allowing just appetizers to be ordered, and refusing outside water - even though their own water tastes strongly of tap. These policies, combined with the unkind service from Darla, make visits stressful rather than enjoyable. While some of the other staff members are friendly and attentive, the inconsistent service leaves us hesitant to return. It's disappointing because the food is excellent, but the atmosphere and service can make you want to leave rather than look forward to dining. read more

We have been renting in the area for a month (Birds) & I finally reached my capacity for seafood last night. I really wanted some beef. Be prepared for a moist, flavorful, thick & probably 3/4 pound perfectly cooked Delight. The bun was even grilled! It was a complete meal to itself as I could hardly get my hands around it!...& definitely NOT my mouth! It was also layered with red onion, tomato, spring mix & feta...AND came with a substantially large Greek Salad. Other choices were rice or fries. I had to bring the salad home because I could barely finish my burger! My husband chose the Gyro Platter which was presented under a Cloche revealing a large Greek Salad with lots of Gyro slices. It also came with pita triangles & homemade tzatziki without cucumbers. He had to bring a potion of his meal home as well! Next we chose the owners wife's home made Baklava. Never been THIS conflicted about writing a review. The food - amazing. One of the best Mediterranean restaurants.... Service- beyond unfriendly the place is very unassuming and shabby, I would say. As you drive up to the parking lot, the immediate thought is: " am I making a mistake"?! Then walking inside and being greeted by the most unfriendly hostess, you keep the initial impression of maybe walking away. The hostess ends up being the waitress as well and her waiting bedside manner is even worse than greeting. Then you realize that she is the only one on the floor and you think, oh maybe her cat died or something. But then you see her chatting with new people in the most friendly way Then she turns the air on, at night, at 60 degrees outside. When asked to turn off because it's blowing directly on an 18 mo old child, she declines because it's HUMID and floors are slippery. WHAT. I don't know what to say, really. Wow, Red Onion is intimate and appealing and everything I ate was delicious! I highly recommend the hummus and the Greek Fries for appetizers. The chicken sandwich is not exactly a sandwich. This is a great little hidden gem in Destin. It's a tiny spot with parking in the back. The atmosphere is quaint with maybe 7 inside tables and 4 outside tables. I'd imagine during peak season you'd need a reservation. Our bottle beer and champagne split was not ice cold but that's the only thing I'd complain about. I had the gyro platter, the meat was perfectly seasoned over a bed of rice, the salad was served on the same plate with a nice balsamic type dressing and plenty feta cheese crumbles. It was delicious!! My husband had the Swedish meatballs over garlic mashed potatoes, again the salad is on the same plate. I don't usually give a 5-star rating the first time I visit a place because I want to give them a chance for improvement the next time I visit, but man! If I had to, I'd take a half star away and give a 4.5 just because I was disappointed in the gyro, which is why I went there in the first place. But everything else was so good, it made up for the bland gyro. So let's start there. I love Mediterranean food and the gyro has to be my fav item. The seasoned gyro meat and tzatziki with red onion and tomato and a soft, warm pita just does something for me. So I was really looking forward to Red Onion's version, but was disappointed because it was bland and too light on the tzatziki for my taste. I actually didn't finish it, partly because the other food was so good. The fries aren't really worth mentioning, unfortunately. The best thing I put in my mouth from that day to this was their greek nachos. First of all, we didn't even order this, but a customer made a mistake on their to-go order so Red Onion gave them to us for free as we were leaving with our two bags of food. And my God, what a blessing. We had to drive about 10-15 min to our hotel before we even ate anything, but even then the pita chips were not soggy. They were still warm and crisp. The gyro meat on the nachos was what I wanted on my gyro: warm, a tad spicy, full of flavor. The scattered feta around the dish was delicious, and there was some kind of warm, white sauce underneath it all. Delicious delicious delicious. The grape leaves were also quite good. The picture only shows 3 because we'd eaten some by the time I took a pic, but I'd definitely get those again. Just the right amount of lemon in the rice. Some places put way too much lemon in their grape leaves and it takes over the whole dish, but Red Onion did it right. The greek salad was HUGE. And at first I was annoyed because it had dressing on it--I like to add my own dressing gradually to avoid sogginess--but I was amazed that the salad was dressed perfectly. In fact, I can see how some might say there wasn't enough dressing, but I'd beg to differ because there are so many fresh, flavorful ingredients on the salad that you don't need a lot of dressing at all. And the dressing was some kind of light vinaigrette, so the fresh ingredients really shine on the salad. AND, it was still good several hours later and still not soggy. I dunno how they did it. I go to Ft. Walton several times a year but this is the first time I've driven over to Destin for some food. Now that I know Red Onion is over there, I'm making it part of my regular rotation.
