Red Panka is a made-to-order Peruvian restaurant across from Walmart. The food arrived hot, and with an incredibly good aroma. We tried another starter: Papa A La Huancaina. This comprises of thick sliced cooked potatoes, olives, hardboiled egg halves and smothered in yellow Huancaina sauce. This dish originates from Huancayo, Peru, and is all about the sauce. Even though the sauce is a chili reduction with melted cheese, it is smooth, creamy and mild. It has a bit of lingering heat at the end. Beware, the olives have pits. We next tried the Red Panka Fries. The fries, themselves, were ordinary and bland. The beef cubes were also bland and a bit dry and chewy. But the creamy sauce was savory and had a bit of heat. This starter looked better than it tasted. My go-to entre is the Panka Tacos with Fire Grilled Chimichurri Chicken. These tacos are a mouthful of flavor. The entree comes with 2 tacos. The ingredients are fresh and the corn salsa still has a snap of freshness. The Aji sauce, a namesake from the Aji Amarillo peppers, is crisp, creamy and adds a satisfying heat finish. The chicken is consistently moist. Also a go-to is the Panka Quinoa Salad. Again, this is made with fresh and crisp ingredients. This entrée sized salad has quite the variety of vegetables mixed with the lettuce and quinoa. We usually get it with chicken which is grilled and really well seasoned. Ask for their lime vinaigrette which goes great with the salad. Overall this a satisfying dish and definitely a favorite. We finished with the Lomo Saltado: basically beef on grilled onions and rice. The beef is sautéed and flambéed in a wok, then they add the onions and the other ingredients. This is a savory and flavorful dish. The onions are rough cut and stand out as a vegetable, but are still sweet and mellow. This is cooked with the Aji pepper based Aji sauce. It's served over the French fries and rice. We drove past it one day and decided to give it a try because we have always enjoyed Peruvian food. My husband and I each ordered a Lomo Saltado plate as well as one order of empanadas. Now I don't regret going and trying it. It was OK but I've had way better. It had salty spots like they didn't mix it well enough & some of the food was cold. The rice was cold and for the price you would think it would be on point as well as fresh. It sounded like they were making it fresh, but it sure didn't seem like it. I love this place. The way the restaurant is set up is nice and it's cool that it's a family restaurant. The staff is super friendly and the food is amazing. I have had the lomo saltado plate twice and both times have hit. The portion is pretty big and I really don't need the fries but it's a great addition if you're not wanting the rice or just extra hungry. Have you ever had something that you didn't know you needed in your life until that moment? Right off the bat I noticed that they serve their "Saltado" entrees in variations of: bowls, plates, stir fry, burritos and tacos. I'm sure with whatever you pick you won't go wrong. The first bite I experienced was filled with a mild amount of heat on the back with perfectly seasoned meat with a hint of acid and salt unlike any other cuisine in the area. I salivated so much craving more after I finished swallowing a caramelized onion so what more with the beef that I chose? I'll let you guys have to form the opinion for yourselves but it definitely has become something I long for. They are VEGAN FRIENDLY, and have variations of salads with quinoa and starters that vary from delicious fried plantains to a chilled potato avocado stack that looks like something out of a haute cuisine magazine (it's called Causa Rellena and I strongly recommend the four flavorful shrimps that come with it). Just know that like all good things there's a little bit of a wait after you order, because they make the food fresh and right in front of you (you can literally see the flambé in the giant wok behind the counter) So come on down and give it a try. However, the beef was a bit over cooked. But adding the green sauce helped meld the flavors together. the fries & rice were cooked perfectly. I'm used to having both the meat & the fries added together instead of being tossed on top. I also ordered fried yucca with huanicaina sauce. Soooo good. only ate a couple with both huaniaina & their green sauce which is slightly a nice heat for me, the heat level is about medium. A hotter version would be nice. But I think most customers may not like the sauce hotter. Well, I will try other items on their menu. The whole experience is a wannabe Peruvian restaurant, even the alfajor dessert - tasted old , without flavor , like it has been sitting there for weeks. First I would like to comment that the only Mexican thing in the menu is the tortilla, the dishes are Peruvian. I ordered the lomo saltado yesterday, it was tasty overall however in the salty side. They added soy sauce and on top I felt and tasted heavy salt on the french fries. The beef was too well done. Rice was good. I loved the fact that it was garnished with thin slices of fresh aji amarillo, very Peruvian. I took out alfajores, they were totally tasteless. Don't bother. I've been wanting to come here since the pandemic but just hadn't made it here. We didn't know what to order but the couple behind us helped us narrow down the huge menu. My mom got the tallarin saltados camaron. She said it was tasty with a a good amount of shrimp. Her favorite part was the sauce which was served on the side. I got empanadas trio which were crispy and delicious. My favorite was the chicken. My daughter got pollo chaufa. She loves rice. We shared the Red Panka fries which had really yummy sauce as well. I've honestly had never had a problem with this establishment and I have always recommended their food to other people. So this review is by no means a reflection of their food. The food is great! It's a reflection of their service. We ordered the Empanada Trio- all cheese, this is exactly as it's listed on their menu. We got a mixture of cheese and meat empanadas. We brought them back to the counter and explained to the teen behind the counter. Instead of offering an apology he went on to blame me for ordering wrong and claimed that I ordered an empanada trio. I told him I did and stated it would be all cheese. He went on to say that if I wanted all cheese empanadas they don't call them a trio they call them all cheese empanadas. So how is this my problem? They have two listings on the menu for empanada trios and one says all cheese. He didn't diffuse the situation and actually made it worse. So they call over who I assume is the manager and again no apology just pleading the case of how I ordered wrong. She finally took a look at the menu and said "I don't know why it's listed like that." Okay, again how is this my problem and why are they so defensive and ready to point fingers. I just wanted my empanadas fixed which she did end up fixing. We were over charged. Originally, seven something times two instead of five something times two for the cheese ones. We didn't push for our change and that we were owed money because we wanted to enjoy our food. It was not appreciated that there was no apology when it was truly not a mistake on our behalf. The cashier (which also is the owner) has long curly hair and in my opinion should tie it up in a bun. The boy working there also had long hair and should tie it up. The food here is bland and I've definitely have had much better. LOMO SALTADO - the beef was tender, but lacked flavor like the rest of the dish. Lomo Saltado is supposed to be stir-fry of meat and fries served with flavored rice. I don't like how the fries seem like they weren't cooked with the beef at all since there was no sauce on the fries. The rice was also a little hard. The interior is small with tables that sit up to 4-5 people. You order at the cashier, get a number, and they'll bring the food to your table. Food came out pretty fast, but honestly, I wouldn't mind waiting a little longer for better food. TL;DR not authentic Peruvian food. Food is on the bland side. I wouldn't recommend. read more
