There were only two other families there--one already eating and the other still waiting to order--so the delay was surprising. The drinks did come out quickly. I actually saw it sitting on the counter, and the server passed by it at least four times without picking it up. For the past two months I have been on a Peruvian foodie kick. I know, it's tough, but someone must do it..... And since we were in San Bernardino at lunchtime on Tuesday, it only seemed appropriate to give El Rico Pollo a chance. First impressions...clean, neat, spacious, friendly, good service, and smells good. Of course, you always start with the traditional salty corn nuts brought to the table, fresh from the fryer. Yum. We stayed conservative (a new concept for us), ordering just two dishes, the rotisseried chicken and an appetizer, Jalea Peruana Personal. Both orders turned out to be huge servings. We ordered a 1/2 chicken (4 piece) entree. It was accompanied by french fries and a large green salad. The chicken was good, not great. Sadly, we seem to be plagued by dry chicken breast no matter where we order chicken these days, and this place was no exception. Frustrating. And this one was not served hot. However, the sides, a green salad and french fries, were simply wonderful. The salad dressing was a light vinegrette made with lime juice and ground herbs. So good, I was dipping my french fries in it. The appetizer platter was a thing of beauty. It was supposed to be a serving for one. Rrrrriiiiight. It was piled high with freshly fried seafood (calamari, white fish, and shrimp) plus a couple of yucca slices. The delicate coating was light and flaky, and the cooking oil, fresh. The seafood was so tender and good, I chose to burn the roof of my mouth rather than wait for it to cool. The tartar sauce good, especially after I opted to blend in some of their Peruvian green sauce. We shared, and still I had a ton to bring home. You basically cannot go wrong here. If only they could ease off on overcooking the chicken breast. Perhaps only ordering the dark meat quarter is the way to go. But for those who care, a whole chicken retails for around $10.99. Glad we tried it. If we were in the area, we would come back. But I do not consider this a destination restaurant....I am still happy with the Peruvian food in my own town. read more
