One thing I can say about this place, they are reliable and consistent. Their halo-halo dessert is decent and one of my go-to for that treat. The cakes and pastries are decadent and outstanding, especially one of their standard offerings, the moist chocolate cake bars. There's nothing special about their palabok, arroz caldo or any of the food items, but at least they're there if you want a taste of quintessential Filipino food. The place is a decent size and clean. It's usually never crazy busy here. They have a small dining area. I mainly only go here when my mom sends me here to get her favorite palabok and chicken empanada. I grew up always having the mocha crunch cake at family parties. I never really understood the hype. My tip is to check the dates on the items prior to purchasing. Mamon and items like that only have best buy dates from about 3 days of purchase. If you don't eat right away, it does get moldy by the best by date. Second tip: If you are buying empanada and palabok, make it a meal with a slice of cake. You save a little more that way. It's a Filipino bakery that specializes in cakes, snacks, pancit, arroz caldo, empanadas, etc. Today I ordered pancit palabok, arroz caldo (congee) and ensaymada (soft sweet bread). I got the cheese and yema caramel bread and the saleslady said the yema batch was on sale today ( I noticed tomorrow was the expiration date). Why not? She threw in a free yema ensaymada for me. This place is a scam! I bought two Arroz Caldo (Chicken Porridge) To Go they came in two small paper bowls. When I got home opened both bowls were half filled. Few months ago, I brought a Ube Coconut Roll for one of our aunties' party. She loved it. And so did everyone else apparently because later that week I was asked if I could bring another one for a different party. Delicious and I love the pretty purple and white colors. I decided to try a couple of their empanadas - both the beef and pork were delicious - the meat inside was moist and full of flavor and the pastry it was baked into was buttery and crumbling once you bit into it. Of course, I had to try some of their traditional dessert items as well. I got a few flavors of their mamon - ube, cheese, and mocha and also a cheese ensaimada. I wasn't such a fan of the cheese desserts - the combo of the savory and sweet isn't really my cup of tea. This Filipino bakery is located next to a Lucky Supermarket and a Starbucks so there's plenty of parking. They have a good variety of items...all available for takeout only. Empanadas, cakes, and Mamons are highly recommended. The Halo Halo was supposed to come with a scoop of Ube ice cream, but ours just had a scoop of vanilla...so minus one star for that. I'm one of the worst Chipinays. I don't speak a lick of Tagalog (except for cuss words) and I can barely pronounce Filipino food items. I've gotten some eye rolls by some lolas when ordering "kare kare" because I can't roll my Rs so I sound like I'm saying "car-ee car-ee". My boss always clowns me. He speaks and understands tagalog and even joked about decorating my office with a big spoon and fork. And, this is coming from a country guy from Arkansas. I don't eat Filipino food very often and I don't have a sweet tooth but I was in the Mission Plaza and thought to stop by Red Ribbon to grab some mamon (Filipino sponge cake). While waiting in line, the intoxicating smell of freshly baked goods were wafting in the air and the kind Filipino man in front of my pointed at the fresh batch empanadas...with his lips. They're better than Valerio's empanadas IMO. I was thirsty afterwards so I think they use a little msg which is a given but just putting it out there in case you have msg sensitivities. Usually, I don't bother reviewing chains or even looking them up on Yelp but after checking out their reviews and seeing many of my trusted Yelp friends affinity for Red Ribbon's empanadas, I feel like I've been living under a rock all these years. WHY did it take me SO long to try these savory, golden pockets of deliciousness?! What's even more awesome is how cheap they are... My good Yelp friends, Lolia S. and Hen A. noted in their 8+ year old review that they paid around $2 for their empanadas and it's still in the same price range! I also love Latin American empanadas but they're going for $6+ for the same size in San Francisco (*ahem ahem* El Porteño and Nucha). Don't get anything 20% off without checking. I wanted to grab something small for my flight and decided to come here for breakfast. Actually the main place we wanted was closed and this was next door. We decided to get the pancit palabok and arroz caldo. It's fast food from a bake shop do I wasn't expecting anything special. I was right. I like the crunchy pork skin on the pakabok and the arroz was ok once it cooled down to eating temperature and after adding lemon. It would have been better with pattis but they didn't have any. What really shocked me was the dessert. Now this chain has a reputation of show casing their desserts beautifully and it shows here. I got some small taisan bits and headed to the counter to pay. On the table, they also had some taisan cakes 20% off. I was going to get theses till I noticed the two small green dots on one of them. Yea that's a turn off. Yes I got the dessert after a long extensive check. Overall two stars.
