I intended to try this bakery a long time ago, but as usually happens, places get pushed to the backburner until a specific need arises. With the upcoming mid autumn festival (tomorrow actually), I really wanted some traditional Cantonese mooncakes, but I didn't want to buy an entire box of just one flavor for myself. That's where Cherry Blossom came in so clutch. I was able to order individual flavors from here with or without salted egg yolks. I got one each of black sesame and white lotus paste. I also added a pair of egg tarts (not an option to buy just one) and a passionfruit tea to round out my order. I tried 1/8 of each of the mooncakes upon arrival. Both had a good flavor, but I found them rather dry and slightly crumbly. Still, they satisfied the craving. The egg tarts were solid and pretty standard for San Francisco quality, but they were almost too rich, and I don't think I'd get them again. As for the passionfruit green tea with boba, I found it too sweet and syrupy, but that's not too surprising given it's just an add-on and not what the bakery specializes in by any means. Overall, this is a pretty decent bakery by SF standards with all the classics. Not the highest quality but still delivers tasty treats with something for everyone. read more

There are plenty of bakeries all around San Francisco which sells buns. You can find them in almost every neighborhood in San Francisco. When you are at the Ocean ( the avenue not the water) Avenue there are a few places to choose from in the area. There is one place which sells lots of bake goods and it's located on Ocean avenue.It's called Cherry Blossom. On an Ocean Avenue stroll on a sunny day during the heat wave I landed at Cherry Blossom. Inside you will see baked goods along with customized cakes. I had got the durian roll. It didn't have a smell to it and actually the scent was welcoming. It didn't have the funk it smell or taste like some I saw on my social media feed. I then tried their pineapple bun and it was not too sweet and tasty. It was a bit flakey like some in SF. If you wait too long to eat the bun it's start to get crumby. This is a good bakery for your bun fix. I dropped by while I was in the neighborhood on a Friday. It was brightly lit inside with one customer other than myself, so it was quiet at around noon. I've had Cherry Blossom Bakery egg tarts before and really enjoyed them! The crust is perfectly flaky and the custard is lightly sweetened. SO YUMMY!!! Great as a dessert or snack! I've had my share of egg tarts and I think the ones Cherry Blossom makes are one of my favorites in the city. The lady who helped me was nice and efficient. There were many other delectable pastries in the display case, but I intentionally came for egg tarts. I'll have to come back and try other things, but I would still include egg tarts! I ordered a few egg tarts this time. I ate one fresh, but stored some in the refrigerator for a few days in an air tight container. They still looked good after 2 days! Amazing!! Many times I would do the same with other egg tarts from other bakeries and the next day, you would see a crack in the middle, wrinkly custard, or the custard would peel away from the crust. Finally have found an authentic Chinese bakery that isn't deep in SF. Their egg tarts are probably the best that I've had in the Bay Area - the crust is tender and flaky and the filling is smooth and not too sweet. We also had the char siu bao and hotdog buns and both were excellent. My husband really enjoyed their custard bun which comes with a pineapple bun topping. The prices are ridiculously affordable (e.g. 2 cocktail buns for $3.70) so it's reverse sticker shock coming from the peninsula. Came on a Saturday around 12:10p and was the start of the lunch rush. Parking can be tough but there are lots of metered and residential spots to fight for. The line moved pretty quickly. I do wish they had a menu posted on the side so first-timers like me could decide without blocking the displays. We tried the mango mousse, chocolate mousse, cappuccino, and strawberry mousse along with their strawberry cream cake. We ended up sticking with the mixed fruitcake and strawberry cream cake. The $1.80 Custard Bun never fails to disappoint (photo), but the $1.85 Coconut Tart was just too heavy to indulge in beyond a couple of bites (photo). Note: I got my order for delivery I've ordered from Cherry Blossom Bakery multiple times now for delivery and everything is always so good. Their custard buns are my favorite but I've also had their mini hot dog buns, which I love but unfortunately don't have a picture of. I'm sure if I went in person and picked up my order fresh that I'd love the food even more but you simply cannot go wrong with their custard buns, pork buns, or hot dog buns. Their pork buns are so pillowy and soft. The meat is tender with just a touch of sweetness which compliments the bread so well. I came here to grab some baked goods to try at home and ended up getting a chocolate mousse cake, mango mousse cake, and a durian pastry. I was helped pretty quickly and paid in cash. Both the chocolate and mango mousse cakes were quite similar, with a decent layer of mousse on top of a soft sponge cake, plus a few toppings. They were okay overall, but the mousse wasn't as fluffy or moist as I would have liked, leaving a bit of a dry mouthfeel. The flavor tasted slightly artificial, though given the lower price, it wasn't too surprising. The durian pastry had a faint smell, but the filling was more sweet bean paste than durian, with just a hint of durian aftertaste. The outside was nice and crispy. Overall, it's an okay bakery, on par with Sheng Kee, though they might offer some more unique items. read more
