Wow, wow, wow.....perhaps one of the best meals from start to finish that we've had! Friendly atmosphere, nice al fresco dining, and great food made this our favorite meal on our vacation. We started with the Heirloom tomato Tartine w/goat cheese and it was fantastic. We followed with our entrees--Bolognese of beef, lamb with house made pasta, house made ricotta and parmesan & the House made tagliatelle with fresh ricotta, arugula, Aleppo pepper, lemon, finished with crispy breadcrumb and parmesan cheese. All were excellent! Also Diana (sp.) gave us a great wine recommendation. We decided to have dessert which we normally pass on and we are glad we did. Last year we went here twice and were absolutely blown away by the food and the service. Tonight was a different experience. The food was still excellent but the service was off. Maybe a bad night? All the tables were filled. We recognized two of the servers from our last visit, last year. The atmosphere has local artwork which is nice. The guests are mostly seated two to four per table. An intimate atmosphere but you can still hear eachother speak. The auxiliary support staff are very attentive to removing extra silverware, glassware and table crumbs. Based on my experience of one visit, it doesn't merit the rave reviews. Check your bill. There was a mistake on our bill. Given that we were only a party of two ordering one appetizer, two entrees and a bottle of wine, the mistake was easy enough to spot. It was a second time we visited Red Sky and I don't think the moderate (4) rating on Yelp reflects the quality and service. It is one of the best on MDI. The food is amazing, we especially enjoyed home smoked salmon, local cheeses and short ribs. Wine selection is great. Second time we sat on the terrace and enjoyed the ambiance of Maine summer evening. Service was very efficient and well timed. One of the worst dining experiences I've ever had - and I'm 83 years old. Family of five had dinner August 2025. Previous experience in 2016 when visits to Southwest Harbor were made during construction of a boat had been outstanding. This time was totally different. Arrived on time for 6:30 PM reservation and got off to a good start - with order placed without unnecessary delay. Appetizers delivered soon after and all was fine. Then things went down hill fast. One party ordered second glass of wine twice with two different servers and it never came. Totally ignored by staff for 45 minutes while waiting for the wine and entrees - literally not one single visit from our server or anyone else. After a long 45 minutes waiting for our entrees, our server appeared and told us our entrees "Were being plated and would be right out." After another 30 minutes and no visit from server and no delivery of dinner, one diner left the table and tracked her down. No explanation of delay and after another 15 minutes two diner's dinner appeared, followed by another five minutes later, then another and then another. The idea of serving everyone's meal at the same time seemed foreign to the staff. The food when it finally arrived was somewhere between lukewarm and cold - and nothing special. For the first time in my life, I asked to speak to the manager, who appeared but seemed little interested in our plight - and indignantly accused us of "yelling at her" when absolutely no one raised their voice or was rude in any way. When we pointed out our server misrepresented that our order was being plated and neither she nor our order showed up for 30 minutes, the server insisted she never said it, when all five clearly heard what she said. A terrible disappointment - Red Sky in the past was a delight - and now was a disaster for our party of five. Has it changed hands? Who knows. As they say, "Buyer beware." read more

Had a fantastic dinner tonight with family and friends. Everything was great from the service to the atmosphere to the food. After a long 3 month stay on Mt Desert Island for work this was the perfect way to say goodbye to this beautiful island. This was the best meal of our trip to Maine in June, recommended by our Airbnb host who said it is his favorite restaurant on MDI. Our party of six had outstanding, friendly service, and all of our food was delicious! Nice ambience - not too loud, but lively enough to feel like you're in a special place. If I could give them a zero for service I would. Our party of four stood at the door waiting for a table, (ironically we were standing next to a empty table for 4) forever. Some time later a party of 5 walked in and apparently knew the Owner/Host ( the older lady) and got seated immediately. Quality restaurant with excellent cocktails. My husband and I have been to Red Sky a few times when we are visiting the quiet side of Acadia and it never disappoints. I enjoyed the take on the Side Car cocktail and my husband liked the take on the Old Fashioned. I had the chicken and he had the pasta dish and both were delicious. We dined on the outdoor seating area in the back of the restaurant. It was very classy and quaint and would recommend sitting out there on a nice evening. We weren't real hungry, so we ordered from the starter menu. We split a garden salad, I had a bowl of lobster bisque soup and my wife ordered the plaughman plate ( basically a charcuterie plate). The salad had greens with 3 very thinly sliced cucumbers. I was expecting a lot more for a $13 salad. My lobster bisque was more like lobster soup. Not thick and creamy like I was expecting for bisque. Very few, small pieces of lobster. The server said she would bring bread for my wife's plate, but it never came. The smoked salmon is really nice, one of the best I've ever had. It had a nice subtle, sweet smokiness that I thought was mesquite but could be wrong. The gingerbread cake was delicious! It was a nice surprise, toasted warm with crusty edges and spicy from the ginger. It's a good serving of two slices and I thought we'd take one home but it was so good we devoured it all. The mussels were nothing special and the two bisques (lobster and butternut squash) were a disappointment. I didn't care for the flavor or mealy textures of either. Then we waited over 45 for service again. She kept hanging out at the bar talking with people she knew. We finally had to ask someone else where our meals were. Omg get the duck! Cooked to perfection! Our table of six all agreed it's the best dish. The restaurant is located in the middle of a small town, and it gets very popular around dinner time. The ambiance is relaxed and elegant. Although we went in casual gear you can definitely dress up as well. We ordered a few appetizers to share and they were all pretty decent - pate, lobster, etc As for the main entree we got a wide range of selections, lobster (of course some of had to get it while in Maine!), chicken, and duck! Without a doubt, the duck was fabulous! Thank you to our waitress that recommended the dish. Even though the lobster was good, the duck was even better! And the chicken was surprisingly also cooked very nicely...juicy not dry! For our table we got a bottle of white wine and it was good pairing for our food. The dessert wasn't bad but it wasn't anything out standing so I recommend just going somewhere else for dessert unless you are too lazy. Fancy meal but overall it was worth the price! read more

Jeannie was a doll. She was super friendly and went above and beyond to make our dining experience one to remember! First off, I love places with good wine glasses. This place had them! Their wine selection was also fantastic, we found a bottle of wine we have been hunting down for months. The cocktails were also good but very strong ;). We got the polenta appetizer that was really good! Just a little to much balsamic glaze for me though. Then we have the crab cakes which were also delicious and super full of crab chunks, very little filler. Then we had to lobster risotto. It was fantastic! The risotto wasn't super creamy which I liked, it seemed more broth based so it wasn't overly rich. The lobster portion was very generous and there were plenty of veggies in it. Overall it was great risotto and you didn't feel overly full and gross after eating it. We got the milk and cookies dessert to go, with a scoop of ice cream. The decor is very nice with lots of local art work hanging from the walls. Shortly after being seated we received our menus followed by an amuse bouche of smoked salmon mousse with crostini. A basket of warm, crusty bread arrived shortly before our shared appetizer of crispy polenta with sauteed oyster mushrooms and Swiss chard finished with a balsamic reduction and Parmesan Reggiano. For an entree, my wife chose seared sea scallops finished with an orange and Grand Mariner sauce that was accompanied by basmati rice with almonds and scallions. My entree was a lasagna - house made pasta, acorn squash, sauteed kale and onion with a roasted tomato and pepper sauce plus a basil and almond pesto. I ordered the grilled shrimp... 6 medium shrimp with a sliver of polenta was overpriced at $19.00..no salad, no potato, no rolls, no sides. My friend had 5 small to medium scallops with a small amount of kernal corn with pieces of red pepper(Succotash) at $26.00 . No sides. Very overpriced. 3.5 stars We went to Red Sky last week, and found it to be a solid place to eat, but not exactly what we expected. The dishes are good, the haddock was very tasty and fresh, but the starting beet salad was just that, beets and salad. The sides were rather plain, the potatoes and broccoli under seasoned. I hate to say "basic" but that is pretty much what came to mind. My dessert was the creme brulee, and it was smooth and tasty. I think that if you are looking for exceptional flavors, you might be disappointed, as were we. The bar looked like fun, and the servers were prompt and friendly. read more

Fresh pasta with wild mushrooms was tough stems and soggy mushrooms, tasteless lobster risotto, grey sole with an overpowering citrus sauce that I couldn't tell what kind of fish I was eating. green beans not so fresh undercooked couldn't cut them with a knife. The 2 lamb pops appetizer were so rare they were tough and hard to chew couldn't cut them off the bone were served with a canned white bean and cherry tomato garnish and a few herbs thrown in. We had a wonderful meal at Big Sky. It came recommended to us from a local couple we met while on Cadillac Mtn. We were able to get a last minute reservation for the same night. We started with the recommended wine, AR Malbec. The tomato tart was a nice blend of flavors - fresh tomato seasoned just eight inside a pastry shell. Salads were dressed nicely. Bread was warm. Our entrees were the lobster risotto and the coffee dry rubbed rib eye. Highly recommend both, especially if your partner isn't into lobster. Both had great flavor and side pairings. We capped our meal by sharing the gingerbread cake. This was the best meal we had during our week stay in Maine. Make a reservation and enjoy a fine meal! read more

I went here to celebrate my mothers 65th birthday. We walked in on a Wednesday night and got seated no problem without a reservation (it was Wednesday night) but the restaurant filled up quickly. I'd make reservations next time. The hostess introduced a special wine and let us all taste it and it was good. Another server brought over a chickpea (read hummus) spread and bread crisps, the spread was somewhat bland we added salt and that helped. The polenta appetizer with mushrooms and kale and good. It had. Balsamic reduction that was tasty, but they used a bit too much of it. The mushroom soup was fantastic and not cream based! Two of the three entrées were fantastic. My dad had pokeye Crabcakes which he thought were absolutely perfect! My mom had scallops over rice and beans and she enjoyed those! I had the lobster with risotto, which wasn't that great. The lobster was very tough and small and the risotto was more like rice with mushrooms. We got a dessert from the specials, a pastry with lemon curd and fresh wild blueberries, this was a let down. The lemon curd was barley lemoney and the pastry seemed like it came out of a box/was frozen. The wild blueberries were delicious though! I gave it a 3 because the service wasn't bad but it wasn't fantastic. For a restaurant with white table cloths I expected better service. read more

This place gets great reviews here on Yelp, so perhaps this was an off night, but we had a very uneventful experience. The service and the decor were great, as was the first mojito, but after that everything was subpar. It all looked delicious in writing but not one dish lived up to its description on the menu besides the cheese plate. The ones that were particularly bad were the lobster 'chowder', which was essentially runoff water from a docked boat in the harbor that had a drop of cream added to it, and the scallops, which were overcooked. It just didn't pack the punch that it should have for the price, nothing stood out in a good way. Seasoning and salt and pepper would have made a difference in all of the plates. read more

I'm a bit biased, my boyfriend having worked here, thus having a personal relationship with the owners. That being said, this is definitely the best restaurant on Mount Desert Island, easily the best in Maine, and certainly one of the top restaurants in New England. We recently went back to visit and had another stellar experience. The chicken liver pâté with red onion jam was an impeccable delight, and the lobster on risotto was out of this world. Their food is always superb. Even the complimentary bread is worth gorging on. The Red Sky cocktail is a must-have: raspberry sorbet and Champagne. read more

A fabulous option if you're vacationing on Mt Desert. Very nice, but simple/casual ambiance. Seems like the tourist tripe hordes mostly skip this place. I had an absolutely fabulous lobster and risotto dinner. Perfectly done - not a chemistry test in how much butter and salt risotto can absorb (as it is usually done). The appetizers were solid. I took one star off for a less-than-fabulous minted martini. A great cocktail would have put this place over the top. Also the service was a touch slow. I am extremely picky, if you've seen my other reviews you know that is true. I almost never give 5 stars. I almost don't even want to review Red Sky, because I always want to be able to get a table! This has become my favorite restaurant, no question. We eat out a lot, and we have little time or patience for dining-out experiences that just make us wish we'd stayed home. Red Sky is the opposite of that. From the moment you walk in, you feel relaxed and in good hands. Smiles and consideration from everyone. Which is not to say it isn't luxurious, it's just that Red Sky is not pretentious. There is plenty of room in the dining room, you don't feel packed in, and you can enjoy your intimate dining experience with the people you came with. And the food? Just fantastic. I have photos somewhere, but you'll have to take your own. We have had 'family occasion' meals here, and everything is just right. So after days of sleeping in a tent down in the Seawall Campground and eating out of a cooler in the back of the car in between hikes in Acadia, I wanted to treat my girlfriend to a birthday dinner that was a change of pace from the past few days. I found about Red Sky through Yelp, searching for "fancy dinner" near SW Harbor. We LOVED it! The staff was super friendly and accommodating, very professional. We were seated promptly on a busy night and waited on shortly after. My mixed drink was awesome and my girlfriend loved the wine that was suggested by our waitress (a malbec I think...she's the wine person, not me). Very tasty and well-presented quail appetizer, as were both our main dishes. I had the lobster risotto, which was chock full of big chunks of lobster and the risotto was cooked to my liking...and I regularly bitch about under/over cooked risotto. Girlfriend had the duck, which was also just about as perfect as one could ask for. This was back in early June, so I know I'm forgetting the second appetizer we had and probably leaving out other details, but everything about the experience was what we had hoped for and then some.
