Great location. Service was impeccable and the food was great! The Shrimp Lafayette is delicious. The burger was perfectly cooked and delicious. No wonder why this place has been open for so many decades! Looking forward to going back!

I think this is either #1 or #2 best food in bar harbor. I went to 6 different restaurants (Stewmans, the reading room, the oven, la Bella vita, Jordan's,etc) and this was gas. Drinks are good and food is good, they had the best lobster out of all the restaurants too. Soft, flavorful, fresh. Which is ironic cuz stewmans is literally a lobster restaurant and it was mediocre at best. The clam chowder was the perfect creaminess. Everything was perfectly seasoned. The service was great, and it has some of the best ambience besides the reading room. Epic!!!

we waited about 45mins on a saturday night, and got seated around 8:15pm. the staff were pretty friendly, and food didn't take too long. I tried the: - galyn's nachos - bar island burger: unfortunately I ordered medium and the meat was quite medium rare - blueberry apple crisp: my favorite, loved the balance of sweetness and tartness - creme brûlée

We had a lovely table overlooking Bar Harbor -- the view alone was worth it, but the food made it even better! The lobster bisque was rich and flavorful, the oysters were fresh and perfectly light, and the hot lobster roll was absolutely delicious. What really impressed us was our server, Tyler, who paced the meal beautifully. We never felt rushed -- everything came out with perfect timing. We were able to truly enjoy each course: first the bisque, then the oysters, and finally the lobster roll (which they even split for us, along with the slaw). Speaking of slaw, their vinegar-based coleslaw was a pleasant surprise -- I'd never had it that way before and absolutely loved it. A wonderful lunch experience all around -- great food, service, and view!

4.25 stars Service was fantastic Menu had multiple vegetables and we loved the Cauliflower The seafood fettuccine was a large portion - shrimp, lobster and fish were perfectly cooked. The mussels were a little off and the scallops were average. As a whole the dish was good but not amazing The pork chop was delicious The blueberry crisp was okay Overall quality and prices were good for the area

This Seafood fettuccine is the best I've ever had.

This is a hidden gem of Bar Harbor. The chef, of 40 years, has perfected the main meals here that are outstanding. The waitstaff are just the cream de la cream. Very knowledgeable of the menu and offer recommendations that seemed to fit perfectly with your palette.

Nice place for dinner, a little bit more upscale than most restaurants in the area but still fairly casual. They have labelled vegan options on the menu, though there are not a ton. I had the cauliflower piccata, which was not bad. My mom had one of the two specials for the day, which was a haddock dish, and she was very impressed with her meal. They also have a kids menu. We also got a lobster bisque to go, which I was told was very very good. The inside environment is really nice, and the servers and staff are very professional. Our waitress ground black pepper freshly onto our food when it came out. Prices are not outrageous, especially compared to nearby restaurants.

Excellent, well established restaurant in a prime location in Bar Harbor! PROs: Very attentive, and courteous staff - our server Nicole did a stellar job. Bathrooms are clean & family friendly. Atmosphere is very welcoming with a nautical feel. I highly recommend you visit the upstairs lounge. They had very nice 25% off happy hour on certain items that were generous. We had the lobster roll, kids grilled shrimp, IPA, & oysters off the shell. All were EXCELLENT! CONs: Parking is tough, but that's an issue in the city, not necessarily this places fault.

We had reservations and it seems to be popular. A couple walked in and was told the wait would be over 45 mins. We sat in the upstairs dining room which was spacious. The waiter was nice and attentive and recited the 4 fish specials of the day. Hubby ordered the duck breast which came with what looked like a brown rice pilaf and broccolini. I ordered the 3 crab cake dinner and it came with the same vegt and rice. We shared a Caesar salad that resembled a green salad, added 2 anchovies - the best part. My cup of lobster bisque was good. I've had better bisque as with the crab cakes (Maine rock crab) , both were too salty. The crab cakes were crispy on the outside. I make crab cakes at home when Dungeness crab is in season and mine taste better, and I've had better ones at other restaurants. Hubby thought the duck breast was less chewy than what he ate last night. The portions were more than enough for us and we had no room for dessert.

We chose this restaurant for our anniversary lunch. We had made reservations and they quickly escorted us upstairs. They brought our drinks and then took our order after answering our questions. For an appetizer we ordered the Cauliflower with lemon caper sauce. It was delicious. I ordered the Catch of the Day - Panko Crusted Hallbut with Broccolini and wild and white rice. My meal was not only lovely to look at, but so yummy. My partner ordered clam chowder, Halibut sandwich and a side salad. He was quite happy with his meal also. The staff was attentive and provided great service. Even with several other diners upstairs, it was quiet. A perfect place for our anniversary.

Came here for the late lunch with a group of 4 and a child. They put us in the separate room which was amazing. We really appreciated that. Service was super friendly and attentive, we were really happy with them. The menu is very large and has many different options, including a large kids menu. We ordered a lot of things: burger, beet salad, mussels, crab cakes, crab stuffed mushrooms, and shrimp dish for the child. Child plate came with lots of shrimp, amazing wild rice and broccolini. Was the best children's plate we have ever seen. Our toddler loved it very much, even though he is a picky eater. He also love the mussels. All the food was amazing. We also had some blueberry lemonade that was super tasty. Ambience is traditional, but in a good way. It is more upscale than most other places in the area, but not more expensive. I would say it was the best place in Bar Harbor and we tried a lot of them.

Delicious! They say us as far away from the window as possible despite having open seats. Good halibut and good crab cakes/lobster roll

Normally, we won't eat at Bar Harbor because it's really pricey and it's a tourist trap, and you can get better seafood somewhere else without breaking the bank. But we had a friend with us who hadn't been to Bar Harbor. So, we decided to eat here and Galyn's delivered. The mussels appetizer was incredible with a nice twist of Dijon. I can perhaps eat 2 bowls of that. For $14, it was inexpensive! And the stuffed mushrooms were delicious as well. We also ordered a bowl of clam chowder. The serving was huge, but the taste was not your traditional type. So, I asked our server what was in it, and he told me it was made with "salt pork," which gives it a rich, savory taste. It was delicious, but it was like eating potato soup with clams. I honestly won't order it again. My friend enjoyed her bowl of lobster bisque, and we were too full to order entrees. Our server was great, and we were seated near the window with a nice view of the harbor. Why not 5 stars? Well, I asked the market price for steamed lobster and it was $42! And the lobster linguini was $48! That's ridiculous. We went back to the house and ordered 6 steamed hardshell lobsters from Market Basket for $85. So if you're a tourist, save yourself some $$$ and order it from a shack, there are so many of those in Maine.

Just where we sat not our food.

    Do they take reservations?

    Yes and do go there

Do they have good gluten free options?

I feel sure they do. I can think of several items on the menu that would be gluten free as I understand it.

    Is it casual or upscale?

It's casual. Could you make it upscale? Sure, because there are white table clothes and the ambiance is very nice. However, many of the customers seemed to be tourists walking in off the streets and dressed comfortably.

We were excited to eat at a higher end restaurant for our last night of vacation, but the food was just not good. The restaurant is very cute, and i really love the decor of it. They seated us by a window upstairs which was lovely, but it didn't make up for the food. Our waitress was also just OK. The whole experience was meh. We ordered the pretzels and beer cheese to start since she mentioned it was homemade. The pretzel just wasn't that good at all. Pretty flavorless. I was going to order a seafood meal but settled on the chicken piccata. My husband had the burger, my son had the kid's mac and cheese, and my daughter ordered the dry rub chicken wings. I think they best meal out of them all was the kid's mac and cheese. My chicken piccata was just swimming in the sauce that I tried to scrape some off to the side. I don't know if there was something wrong with the chicken or the sauce, but I got SO sick after eating here. The wings were also overly seasoned and overwhelming. My husband thought his burger was forgettable and basic. WIth so many other great restaurant options in Bar Harbor, I think McKays can be skipped for sure.
