It did not take me long to fall in love with Red Tiger. As a SBU Alumni and my grandparents living in Stony Brook, I have ordered here multiple times. They are pricey, but it is worth. You can easily rack up a $50 bill for four people. The soup dumpling and kung pow chicken are my favorites. That being said, you can't really go wrong with anything you order. I have never eaten inside, but I have waited long enough to get an idea of how the waitstaff is. They are not your typical hospitality type waitstaff, more of an eat and go type attitude. Which I think this just a cultural thing. Hence why I won't dine in, I don't want any bad waitstaff experience to ruin Red Tiger for me! The wait time to pick up is usually very underestimated. They will tell you 15-20 minutes and I'll wait the 20 minutes to leave house and I'll still have another 5-10 minute wait. The four stars are really just for the food. It is always fresh and defiantly a step-up from regular take out. Bottom Line: I would not dine in, take out is the best way to go. Give them at least 30 minutes before you pick up, or you will be sitting there waiting. Probably the best chines type take out in the area (a very large area). read more

The food was expensive and no where near as good as any place in flushing. The food was very salty and the soup dumplings did not have a enough soup in them, dough too thick. Very disappointing, was told that this was the best place for soup dumplings on Long Island scary drive to Queens. The sautéed string beans over cooked and very salty. Lamb buns had no flavor bland. This is not reflective of the food which in general is pretty good. This is a reflection of the owners and the people they hire. Most everyone working there is just outright RUDE. Even the delivery folks are rude always counting out their tip and saying more - or looking at you like $5 is not enough to simply drop off $35 worth in food. they frequently get orders wrong and the worst part is they do not answer the phone. They have one line that the front person frequently just takes off the hook or just outright ignores as they are that busy. Why not get someone to answer the phones and take orders rather than rely on the one person to do it all while the owner literally stands behind and does nothing. I've seen it personally several time. They need a serious wake up call on how they treat their clientele because I like many others in the hidden reviews find this place's treatment of people way off. According to Newsday, Red Tiger is in the top 10 on Long Island. Why? We don't get it. They must know someone at the newspaper. 1) Overpriced with unfriendly staff... don't expect a smile. Not even half a smile. 2) The dumplings were under-cooked and the skin did not have an authentically smooth texture. 3) Gung Pao chicken was very dry and small portion for $14.50. 4) Scallion Pancakes Wrap with beef - you need a magnifying glass to find the beef. Seriously. 5)Poker faced waiter, waitress, and cashier encourage a 15 - 25 percent tip. A handwritten note taped to each table requests that the tip be in cash. We can't say it was the absolute worst place we ever ate, but certainly not close to the top 10. Maybe Newsday accidently left off two zeros. Should be the top 1,000. read more

Decent food it's probably better then most typical suburban Americanized chinese restaurants. Soup dumplings were really good I've only had those in Chinatown. This place is definitely on the more authentic side but not as good as flushing or Chinatown. But if your in stony brook this is probably your best option if u don't want to drive far. I have been looking for a decent Chinese place for years! This is the best I have ever had in my life! PERIOD! My boyfriend ordered the "Shredded Potato with Hot Pepper" and I will never look at potato the same way again. It tasted out of this world. I also had the orange chicken, which had a perfect sauce, not too sweet. And we got the pork and veggie dumplings, which were perfect and really lived up to there name sake. UPDATE!!!! I ordered this order from grubhub...next few days after.....MY IDENTITY was stolen! I kid you not, all of a sudden charges started to show up in queens. This was the only place to have my info. Reviewed On Apr 11 2015 Food was ridiculously spicy- not in a complex good way...in a "we dumped pepper flakes all over everything" sort of way...this made it difficult to eat. Portions are small, containers not filled all the way and stingy with the rice. Dumplings were bland, and did not have an authentic Chinatown taste. Fresh though, but not worth having again. When placing order online asked for condiments and were given none, also no crunchy noodles were given with my soup. While the food was edible, it wasn't terrific, and I am praying that I don't get any kind of food poisoning because reliving this experience again would be a nightmare. read more

Without question the most authentic Shanghainese on Long Island. The soup dumpling alone are worth the trip. You will not see menu items such as these unless you go to the Chinatowns in Manhattan or Flushing. Stir-fry pork liver and kidney were quite tasty, give it a try if you haven't already. The braised pork with preserved vegetables is fantastic but call ahead as that dish takes 30 minutes to prepare. I could go on about the menu but have a look. Certainly not what you see in the typical sauce-drenched Americanized Chinese take-out that is all over LI. This is the real thing. We were seated immediately as we just beat the lunch rush. Things went downhill from there. Service was slow and unhelpful. Our food took a long time to arrive and when it did, everything was drowning in sweet sauce. By this point we were so famished that we were just happy to be able to eat anything. Wow, a dumpling spot right near my home base! Let's check this out... We ordered pork soup dumplings (first thing on the menu ^.^) kung fu bun, vegetable dumpling and vegetable rice noodle. The pork soup dumplings come six to an order and are regularly sized. The soup is flavorful and not scorching hot. The down side to this dumpling was the dumpling cinch, or the tip, or the nubby part on top, whatever it's called was a bit larger than I'm use to however, this in no way ruins the dish. The Kung fu bun was okay. Disclaimer: I've never had this dish before so I couldn't say what it should be like. My opinion was that the dough was too thick but it's a bun so they weren't lying! These were the prettiest little buns I ever saw. The vegetable dumpling was okay. Not my thing but my SO wants to order them again when we return. The vegetable rice noodle was amazing. Salty and saucy and perfect. These noodles are so yummy and you can take a bajillion spoonfuls and it never disappears! Talk about getting your money's worth. Sorry there wasn't anymore food ordered, we will be returning and trying other dishes so stay tuned. The service is okay, they aren't overly friendly nor do they push drinks on you. It's fine- you leave having spent minimal monies for very good food. Win-win. The seating area is tiny; might not be the best for larger groups or babies. They also keep the air conditioning on blasting so it's kinda chilly but just order more soup dumplings until you warm up. * Most important thing to note, tip is cash only. Hate giving bad reviews but the service here is the worst I've ever experienced. The waiter was rushing us as me and my friends were ordering and seemed very frustrated at us for no apparent reason. Also, he was in a rush to clear our table even though the restaurant wasn't very busy and not many people were coming in. Just ordered a quick take out. Singapore mei fun and hot and sour soup. The soup was tasty except it had a lot of oil in it. I found that strange and a turn-off! It was as if the cook grabbed the wrong bottle and added oil instead of whatever! The Singapore mei fun was good. I'm curious to try the soup dumplings and the beef chow fun which is listed as "beef flat noodles." Must be the "American" term for chow fun. I'll have to give it another try..... read more

Although reviews here have had mixed service and vary depending on what was ordered, the many times I've eaten Red Tiger's food, I've had pretty good service. The staff were quite accommodating and are incredibly efficient in multitasking all over the place. As for their food, I say that they definitely are amazing at what they serve. Being that this restaurant is a "Dumpling House", I would ALWAYS come here for their dumplings. Most of the pouches of tucked-in goodness are heavenly, and I normally don't eat them with the soy sauce they come with. The crystal shrimp dumplings have a wonderful translucent skin with tender shrimp meat on the inside. The soup dumplings have incredible flavor to them, too. Out of the blue, I was in a rush and had to order Yang Zhou fried rice, which surprised me to be pretty well sautéed. If you are in the area, don't hesitate to stop by this joint to order a dumpling dish or two. Top preference amongst everything else I've ordered. Everything else on the menu is alright, too, but there's no guarantee that they will be prepared to your liking as expected from the dumplings I've had. Overall, staff is courteous and I definitely suggest you try this place sometime. read more

RTDH was probably the place to be a few years back when fresh noods and dumplings were hard to come by on LI. Actually, they still are, but the hunt isn't as bad as it used to be. Maybe we ask more from our noodle houses these days than a spot that still looks like a functioning deli? I dunno, but it seems like Red Tiger hasn't changed much in face of the competition and has been left behind in a trail of inconsistency. For the most part, I'd eat noodles out of a sewer cave bunker mud hut if they were good enough, so the three stars isn't all for lack of atmosphere. It's really for the questionable eats after you order... you just don't know if it's going to be fantastic or a failure. Hot or cold. Fresh or from (last) Friday. Sometimes this is my fave spot to stop and grab takeout and I swerve in the road as I pop 'lings into my mouth while driving. Other times, I need to apologize for folks in the (beautiful) new bike lane nearby as I chuck a cold and bland dumpling from my passenger side window and curse at the time I wasted here. You get the point. It's still good enough to warrant a visit if you're in the area, but it's lost the appeal of a place to travel for. The food is decent but it has been declining in quality and portion sizes over the past few years. No food is worth it when the staff is unbelievably rude however. A staff member asked for an unreasonable tip when I had already tipped 20%. The first thing you see when you walk into the restaurant is a sign telling you, not asking you, to tip in cash only. I suppose the workers learn to be aggressive when it comes to tips from their managers and restaurant owners. The food is not worth the annoyance, and this is coming from a very collected person. The food is okay, but the service is terrible. First of all, they do not take credit cards for bill under $25 as their "restaurant policy". My friend and I ate $20 for lunch and they asked us to pay in cash. Okay. So we paid two twenty dollar bills and they sent the change back without original receipt. We left decent tips about 18% but I was wondering why the change is less than I thought after I left. Therefore, I called back and tried to figure out the reason. The guy answered the phone told me that the tips are included in the bill. I am okay with paying more tips because it's my fault not checking the details on my bill. Shrimp dumplings (bottoms of stack), soup dumplings (top of stack, shrimp green beans in the middle and dragon Phoenix dumpling aswell, super spiced but so delicious... my favorite was the shrimp and green beans! We went there for dinner the other night. Food was good, authentic dishes tailored to the Chinese population. I must say though that the services are not up to par, rather too casual. The cashiers and waitresses were dressed in every day street clothes and all talking nonchalantly in Mandarin. There were talks about which table left how much tips, if they paid or not, checks etc.. If you do not understand the language, it may come off as unprofessional. For those of us that do understand, it just simply degrades the whole dining experience and ruins the atmosphere. Visiting from out of town, I found the Chinese food offerings in the area kind of lackluster. Typical strip mall lameness with the menu over the counter all ordered from the same "So You Want to Open a Chinese Restaurant" catalog. Then we found Red Tiger. The food was fresh, the dumplings were delish, and the bubble tea was legit. Good pricing for good food! We got there aboutn15 min before closing, and they didn't mind that we stayed in to eat. The staff was very courteous and helpful. It bums me out that I'll probably never get to come back, as it's doubtful I'll be back here for work anytime soon. So, please, go on my behalf. Got food here 3 times, 2 delivery , 1 dining in First time getting food here for delivery was very expected. I ordered some minced meat noodle soup. It was nothing but noodle, soup and literally a table of minched meat... so not worth the money. Second time, I went for dining in. It was better experience (since I did not get the same food). Food was decent. but just the fact that I left the store and forgetting the drink I just ordered on the table(it was still full cup). In just few minutes after I left, I went back to get it. They already threw away... I was angry since it was not even 5 minutes that I left the store but they said they would make new one. So it's all good. 3rd time (today) delivery and it was absolutely horrible including food and service. I ordered 2 dish(sautéed and noodle soup) and 1 appertizer. they give NO utensils. So cheap....Sauteed was almost tasteless with extremely dry meat plus it was extremely oily. Doesnt even come with rice. The sauce that come with appetizer was not carefully cover, the sauce spilled all over the container. Noodle soup was nothing but soup, noodle and meat. NO VEGGIES AT ALL!!! . (I got the same thing when I dined in. But that dish came with vegetables in it so I don't understand why they don't give me veggie like they serve at the restaurant) . Second, I was charged 1$ for "open food" wtf is this? I would be completely understand IF they at least tell me what it is. The fact that I was unawarely charged for "open food" is just unacceptable. I checked their website. It says " Free delivery" or I have no idea where the heck this come from. And FINALLY the delivery guy just got on my nervous. I went out to pay and gave the guy tips($3). For anyone who has any complaints about this place....You need to stop being so critical just to be critical. I have 18 years in the restaurant industry and strongly believe that the customer is not always right. Sorry. People tend to comlain just because they can. The dough was light the broth was amazing and the top of the dumpling (as this comes from being handmade) were thiick and dense enough to be able to be picked up by your chopsticks (no spoon needed) They have two kinds plain Pork then also a Pork and Crab..... If you have read any of the negative comments about this place and were on the fence.....Forget them and be your own person and make your own descions. Soup dumplings are really good and they make the best chicken and broccoli in the area. What I have a MAJOR issue with is their prices! Not only are they expensive, their meals don't come with rice! Worst waiter I've ever encountered Unfortunately I couldn't get his name, but he was the rudest waiter I've ever met. I will describe one of the things he did below. Firstly, the food was decent - I've had better and cheaper soup dumplings in Queens before. Their sesame chicken dish is about $14, but doesn't come with any rice.... Now onto our encounter with the waiter. Our waiter spilled my soy sauce as he was serving our soup dumplings, but did not even apologize. He immediately just took my friend's napkin to wipe the soy sauce off the table and floor, and didn't give her a new napkin. I asked him for one; he came back with two and threw it on our table. Never asked us if we needed refills on our water. Never attended to us except when he served us food. I've heard a lot of good things about this restaurant, and anticipated a good experience.. but after today, I wouldn't recommend this place to anyone. read more
