This is a tradition in my family to come to Red Coat when we are up here and it never disappoints us. Red Coats ascetic is very chill and it's not to dark and not to bright it's well just right. The waiter we had, named Rob, was excellent and he is probably t he best waiter that has waited on us. I would give my experience a 100/100. If you don't know what to get the clam chowder is always a good choice. The fried mushrooms are good too if you are into that sort of thing. read more

We take our grown children out to eat every week. Redcoat Tavern is one of our regular stops, at least once every three weeks. Over the last four months the quality has been less than acceptable. My fav burger is just not the same. I can only say that the meat had a mealy type finish/texture?The last time we ordered burnt onions. We were laughing so hard because we were blowing, quite literally, ashes across the table. Needless to say we pushed them off the burger. The wait staff did not seem to care. We went to redcoat tavern on Woodward I was Waiting for 10 minutes and they said. I cannot be seated until everybody in my party. So when they came, we had to wait another half. An hour to be seated. Then we waited for our food for an hour and 22 minutes before the event brought. Half of the order, which was the appetizers that was terrible. The manager did not want to Talk to us. Pros: Delicious hamburgers, down to earth wait staff, good location. Cons: Pricy for burgers, very dim lit inside, always crazy busy. I stopped in a few days ago to try out one of these incedible hamburgers that folks at work have been talking about. The menu lists 2 basic pre-made hamburgers, then a list of all the extras you can get to build your own. This made it a little confusing and somewhat difficult to get everything you wanted on your burger (I would recommend a write-able checklist for each order that the customer can fill out). After the order, the burger came out in about 5 minutes - a very, very quick wait time from order to receipt, and was cooked exactly as I had asked. So far, so good. I cut that bad boy in half, made a makeshift bib out of the available napkins, then went to town on that thing. About 17 seconds later, it was all gone. I came, I saw, I conquered. This was definitely one of the better hamburgers I've had in the area. I think a close second (surprisingly) is from Burgz, the almost fast-food style burger joint on Main Street. Completely different idea, but really solid taste. My chief complaint would be with the cost. After you 'build your own', you're looking at about $15 before adding a side of fries or onion rings. ouch. All in all, I would recommend this place to anyone looking to splurge a bit on a burger. Now the problem with this eatery is that the owners are in a time warp and haven't remodeled since the 80s or longer. That's just cheap! You've gotta love going temporarily blind as you walk into the near complete darkness of the Red Coat Tavern. It seems to take almost a full minute for your eyes start to make the adjustment to the solitary red light fixtures dotting the tavern's landscape. This place is totally old school...in good way. As far as I can tell, this popular lunch spot hasn't changed a lick in the last 25 years. It's got a very loyal following with plenty of regulars sipping at the bar. Today's mid-week lunch crowd was made up of a well-heeled cross section of two generations of suburbanites from Detroit's near northern burbs. By 12:20 pm, every seat in the house was occupied. People come here for the half pound Red Coat burgers...period. Oh sure, they have other things on the menu but my unscientific survey while walking to the men's room says 9 out of 10 patrons chow down on burgers at "the Coat". Our table opened with a plate hand-dipped 'shrooms complimented with both a ranch and cocktail sauce dips. These 'shrooms were fresh and nothing short of amazing. For my burger, I jumped for the Piedmontese beef with its fat, calorie and cholesterol content actually lower than chicken or salmon! I dressed it up w/ Swiss cheese, grilled onions, sautéed 'shrooms and a fried egg on grilled Rye. Wow...comfort food city all the way. Because my co-worker and I were saving calories with the low-fat beef, we had to order a plate of their hand dipped Onion Rings. Great decision! Once again, the Red Coat earns the fiver. read more

My recent trip to the Red Coat Tavern is why I hate to write glowing reviews of a place. There is just no way that any place can live up to the hype for every customer or for every visit. When people wax poetic I come into a place with unrealistic expectations and usually they fall flat. I wouldn't say I was hugely disappointed at all. The food here is pretty delicious on the whole. It just isn't the holy grail of burgers that reading all these 5 stars would lead you to hope for. I wouldn't wait an hour plus to sample it or anything. I will return for sure but off hours or some such and I may leave my husband at home. I will give respect to any place that has scotch eggs on the menu. They may not be everyone's cup of tea but I do quite enjoy the deliciousness on the rare occasions I find them on offering. These were, of course, delicious. The burgers were really nice too. Pricey when you load them up though. Normally I don't mind but I do like a clue to what I will be forking over upfront. Maybe I am just a cheap ass granny type. Its not that I cannot afford it, I just want to know. The meat here is great and cooked to order, the sweet burnt onion perfect, happy bacon, smoked gouda, the zip sauce is even nice in moderation. The tomato was typical Detroit in December produce, tasteless. The bun was fresh though. The fries were utterly forgettable and our batch was not quite hot to boot. I didn't order them, I would have opted onion rings anywho. My husband is a strictly simple guy and was less impressed with the place. I think junking up, while expensive, is the way to go here on burgers. He should have sent the fries back, it added to his grumpiness. Our service was slow, slow, slow. I had ventured upon this joint on a Wednesday night, figuring it wouldn't be too crazy. After allowing the valet to park my car (for free) I walked in the door; boy was I surprised! This place packs them in! Standing room only folks, for at least 45 minutes!!! However, I cannot complain...the drinks were affordable and plenty strong. Hell, my bride became 1 crayon short of a full box after just 1 Moscow Mule! lol After finally being sat, we were advised to order the DIY Burger. I have to thank this place for hipping me to the Piedmontese burger. Oh my gosh. Such a great, lean beef. So much healthier for you than traditional beefs without all the calories and fat! I've started buying frozen piedmontese burgers at the Green City Market in Chicago for cooking at home but I can never quite reach the delicious heights that the Red Coat achieves with the same cuts. The french fries are killer and the onion rings are awesome. If you know me you know I like to eat. Over the past 3 years I basically ate my way across the United States. You see my husbands job took us all across the US and therefore I figured it was my job....nay my responsibility... to personally eat and taste test my way through each city we were in. One of the things we always did in each city was to seek out the "best burger"....so lets just say I am somewhat of an expert in the burger category. Every place I went...every burger I ate...always made me miss Redcoat. Why? Because it seriously is the Best Burger that has touched my lips! My burger of choice? The piedmont (made from "low-fat" cattle - just 2 grams of fat per burger) with cheddar, grilled onions, zip sauce and of course all the "regular" fixins'. But whatever you want you may have on your burger...so many things to choose from...burnt onions....olives...gouda...they got it all! Onion rings are fabulous and I definitely suggest ordering up some for your table. If you are extra adventurous I HIGHLY recommend a Scottish egg. Its basically a heart attack on a plate but oh so delicous. It is a pretty dark and dingy place...and they really squeeze you in there...but it just adds to the redcoat charm. In my opinion, service is great. Most of the waitresses have been working there for an extended period of time and are always super nice. The wait can get pretty long. Went here with some friends on a Saturday evening. Complimentary valet parking- UNLESS you drive stick, then they ask you to park yourself (whippersnappers these days, lol)! They don't take reservations, you have to give your name at the door. We were assured that it wouldn't take that long to be seated. After 30 minutes when we checked, it turned out another party named "Dan" was called. Okay, fool us once. We stayed within arms length of the hostess station after that! Another 30 minutes later and we were seated. Between the booths and the tables in the center, there was hardly any room to move. Once at the booth, the table and seats were narrow and cramped. Heard a lot of good things about the Prime Rib & Yorkshire pudding, so I had to get that. Also the onion rings, so we got those as appetizers.T & her husband also got a prime rib, burger, and Scotch egg for an app. The food came promptly and it was pretty tasty! The onion rings were as crispy and flavorful as advertised! The Scotch egg had an interesting dipping sauce that had some horseradish in it, we ended up using it on the onion rings and prime rib! The prices were "special occasion event", not run of the mill. I'm a Cali girl and lemme tell you, Red Coat Tavern is the best build-a-burger joint in MI. We have tons of build-a-burgers in CA like The Counter and Slaters 50/50 and then there's your typical reliable-always-awesome In n' Out, or chains such as Islands, Ruby Tuesday, etc. But in Michigan, get yourself a Piedmontese (aka leaner patty from Piedmont region of Italy that's EQUALLY bursting with flavor but HEALTHIER...and worth the extra $2.50 or whatever cost it is. If you're gonna eat 'bad' with a burger, at least choose a 'healthier' cut. Next, add your cheese. Options are endless: cheddar, swiss, smoked gouda, smoked gruyere, blue cheese, jalapeno jack, cream cheese, etc. Toppings: diced green olives, grilled mushrooms, fresh mushrooms, raw onions, grilled unions, burnt onions (its actually good), guacamole, watercress leaves, etc. Next, pick your sauce: Zip (their famous sauce. Looks like and sorta tastes like gravy to me), BBQ, teriyaki, guacamole, ranch, ketchup, wasabi, whatever. All burgers come w/ shredded lettuce, tomato, mayo. (I hold the mayo. Interferes with your sauce.) Lastly, add the bacon. B/c remember how you chose the LEANER Piedmontese burger? Now you can negate it all with BACON! B/c everything tastes better w/ bacon my friend. Let's talk side orders. Get the battered onion rings to share. Just do it. It's not to salty, may be a little greasy (who care's, pat it dry w/ napkins if you have to.) but do it. You'll thank me. You can skip the thin-cut fries as they're not seasoned. But if you're like DF, he loves thin cut fries and we get the seasoned cajun ones. Wanna be diff? Get the fried mushrooms. Those rock too. But it's a lot and worth sharing. Other worthy mentions: Cubano is awesome. Pressed like a real cuban. Cornwallis is amazing grilled. The Reuben is a Cornwallis sans cole slaw but grilled. Fish & Chips come w/ 2 cod battered fish and it's actually pretty decent. Try their Chesapeake clam chowder as a non-cream based clam chowder. Its more like a brothy tomato Manhattan clam chowder. Was less than 20-minutes from our hotel. Had great reviews on Yelp, so had to check it out. Easy to find. Across the street from a Irish pub. This place was dimly lit on the inside. Everything was red, or a shade of red. Furniture and decor was on the weathered side. Bar was big, and they had a good selection of bottled beers. Not a lot choices on tap. Appetizers were good. Food looked good, and even though we didn't order food, our server told us the Red Coat burger was by far the most popular. Servers were not the coolest hipsters I've encountered, and their knowledge of beers was pretty lacking. Oh wells, I'm only here for the night. Would recommend this place to anyone looking for a quick beer or two or three and some good appetizers. But be warned, it's not your trendy, hipster, craft-on-draft with large flat screens everywhere with hot servers kind a place. Enjoy! read more

My first Red Coat experience was a couple of years ago, and to this day, if I'm craving a great craft burger, this is my go to place. I've introduced many a friend to the Red Coat Burger, and all have returned, some within days of their first visit. If I could give six stars to the Red Coat, I would. The burgers are a religious experience. It all starts trying to find a parking spot, 'cause if you come here any time that's not 3pm, the place is packed (and for good reason). Be sure to bring your whole party... they will not seat you if your group is not together. The lighting and atmosphere are dark and old school. From the red lamps to the 40 year old booths, this place screams 1970's. The apps are great. My most recent visit included the "Blackened Tenderloin Tips". The tips were cooked to a great medium rare, with a nice cajun bark on them. The cream sauce was fantastic, starting smokey, turning slightly sweet, then finishing with a nice kick. The app also comes with a grilled toast, which tasted of a home made pumpernickel. NICE. I, like I always do, ordered a medium rare burger. This time, I ordered the burger on a brioche bun with sharp American Cheese, Grilled Onions and Avocado. The burger was cooked perfectly, and the creaminess of the Avocado mixed well with the lettuce, tomato and "burger sauce". The grilled onions were VERY flavorful... almost like they had been sautéed in zip sauce. I tend to change up my burger toppings and cheeses every time I come here, and I've yet to run into something that didn't completely satisfy me. Though I did not get them this time, I strongly recommend the onion rings, clam chowder and fried mushrooms. I've heard great things about the Cornwalis and Cubano... some day I'll venture outside of the burger to try these. I'm sure if their half as good as the burgers here, I'll love them. read more

Nice peppers on top. Scottish eggs - Renaissance Festival memories! - Over done, so so Clam Chowder. - omfgSoGood.net - I wanted a 5 gallon pale to go. It was creamy, it was rich, it wasn't heavy, it had that hint of sherry on the finish. Would coat a spoon, but not clumpy, or overly thick. I WANT MORE NOW! For the burger I had double bacon, blue cheese, blackened (Cajun) patty on an onion roll, with zip sauce on the side done med rare. Standard lettuce, mayo, tomato that comes with all burgers was there as well. WOW the flavor I got from this thing. The bacon was smoky, the blue cheese was sharp, and added to the deep, rich, earthy flavor from the cajun blackening. The onion roll was absolutely perfectly grilled, and fresh. Dipping it in the zip sauce mmmmmmm. Cooking temp on the burger was flawless, home run! I went around 3:30 ish to avoid the rush (thanks Yelp!), and had a group of four total. The seating leaves something to be desired, as well as the lighting. So I was making hospital calls Friday afternoon and had an insatiable hunger for a great burger. I had planned on hitting up Millers to reconfirm my past (though hazy) recollections of their ethereal burgers. Unfortunately, I got there too early and the lunch crew hadn't desisted yet. I walked in and it was packed wall to wall. I reluctantly left and decided to head up to the Redcoat for a real burger rather than head to Birmingham to sample sliders from Hunter House, both of which were touted as one of Michigan's #1 burgers by some magazine. I got to Redcoat, hopped a spot at the bar on a very rickety stool and ordered an Ayinger Oktoberfest and the Redcoat burger with American cheese and their house sauce, hold the tomato and lettuce. In my eyes a perfect burger is, simply, a burger cooked to order (whatever that may be) with a great bun, melty cheese (if you're into that) and no frills. I get the gourmet burger craze but I wanted the genuine authentic item, unadorned and beautiful to my mouth rather than my eyes. No beer battered onion rings ready to slide off the burger into my lap, no roasted poblano peppers confusing the issue and definitely no foie gras to insult the vision of what a real burger should be. That is what I wanted and that was what I was presented with. Now, I've been a naysayer for a time, as to all the hubbub about Redcoat's burgers. I've had them in the past and wasn't blown away with all the hype that's been spread but I have to retract what I've said previously. The burger I got on Friday was exceptionally good...cooked perfect, covered in melted glory, with their house sauce dripping over the side of the bun with a cool pickle and side of skinny fries (which were only OK). I thoroughly enjoyed my lunch! It was exactly what I wanted and met my exact expectations of what it could and should be. This is a rare phenomenon in my experience...kind of like the final scenes of Harold and Kumar. On top of that, the service (at the bar at least) was decent considering the crowd. Although, a burger, fries and beer with tip was $25 so maybe a little steep but definitely worth the satisfaction I walked away with. I've still gotta hit up Miller's, Hunter House and a few others but Redcoat is now one of my top 5 burger spots for the "American Hamburger". Kudos! read more

This is solely on one visit, here's how it went: There's no reservations so we heard that we could call an hour in advance to be placed on the waiting list. That didn't work well in our favor. Got there 10 minutes early and "our party of 3" had already been seated. I can see how that could happen... same name and all. So we put ourselves on the list again and waited outside with the rest of the bunch. The place was packed at it was fairly early yet. That's got to be a good thing. I don't mind waiting for good food; lady at the front said it would be about a 25 minutes. Cool. 25 minutes go by, we hadn't heard anything so we check the front again. She said she called us and we didn't answer. BAH. I really don't know how that happened... we were right. out. side. So we chill INSIDE this time. ProTip: I think the key is to follow up. I am one to just chill and wait until my name is called, but I noticed that once we were inside, I saw others go up to the front and inquire.. often. Those who kept asking how long the wait was or where their name was on the list had better luck being seated. I would normally find that annoying on my part to do so, but next time I will have to be annoying. Our waiter was awesome. I have to give major props to people who can give great customer service in such a hectic, busy environment. I ordered the petite prime rib. The doneness was perfect. Meat was juicy, tender, fatty (which I like) but I did end up having quite a bit of extra fat scraps that was not particularly consumable even for me. It came with Yorkshire pudding and Roasted potatoes. Very nice size portion. I would eat that Yorkshire pudding everyday if I could. We shared onion rings. Delicious. & The Scotch Egg. I always wanted to try a Scotch egg! It was ok, the sauce it came with was a really tasty house made dijonnaise which was the star really. We used that sauce for dipping everything else. I had a bite of my other half's Brasserie Burger. It was a good bite. He really enjoyed his burger, he said it was the best he had in a while. He ordered regular fries, in hindsight we should have ordered more onion rings or the sweet potato fries; something different than the norm. I ordered the Pot de Creme for dessert. So creamy and rich in chocolate flavor. I was scraping the inside with my spoon wishing there was more. For this first time experience, I'd have to give a 3. BUT. Things I liked: The company I had (it was a cool place for friends to hang out for a meal) Our great waiter, the menu selection (there's a bunch of things I would love to try next time) that addicting Yorkshire pudding. The only reason I'm not giving five stars is because the last two visits, our service has been awful. We've received orders correctly, but the server has been pushy and rude, shockingly so. They really do have the best burgers around. We love all the options for toppings. The scotch eggs are also to die for... we get em every time. You have to order the onion rings, too! And we love their salads -- just be prepared to share because the portions are extra large. I've never been to Red Coat Tavern before, and I have to say, I wish I had come sooner! I came here with a friend tonight for dinner, and I really enjoyed my time here. I went with a Red Coat Burger with Pepper Jack cheese and all the fixings. The sauce on the burger was delicious! I went with fries and a drink, and overall I really liked the food I had. Service was great, but the place was dark as night! What's up with the dark lighting in here? I couldn't see a darn thing! My friend went with the peidenmontese burger, and she really liked it. Next time I go I will probably get one myself. I do have to say, they have a heck of a good menu, and I'll probably check out their other location when I have time. Well, I'm always game for trying something new and here it is the Red Coat Tavern! A couple things here before you go, number 1 parking is a ***** took us at least a couple times around to find parking until we caved in and got valet. Number 2 make sure you got a reservation b/c we waited roughly 45 minutes to get a table, mind you there was 10 of us so that's a little understandable. We didn't mind the wait b/c it gave us the opportunity to catch up and while we were waiting we saw Gerard Butler, the actor from 300, apparently he was filming a movie in town. Like most asians we just said whats up and didn't even bother asking for an autograph or a picture like everyone else. The moment you walk in all I have to say is darkness! It was really dark but it fit with the restaurant though. Also pretty loud but mind you that's just b/c there are so many people eating at this joint its kinda ridiculous but nice in a way b/c it gave me confidence that the food is great! So what to get what to get, how bout the burger that's the whole reason we came in the first place. They had a whole list of burgers that you could try or you can even build one yourself. In the end I decided to build my own burger and it was amazingly good! The burnt onions for toppings was actually a surprise to me it gave the burger that extra kick for some reason, add that with sauteed mushrooms and provolone cheese and you have got the official Red Coat rankjank burger. FYI, rankjank is my nickname. Add that with some huge onion rings and your meal is set! This is the first time I've ever had trouble finishing a burger, I eventually finished it, but that tells you how big the burger is in the first place. Don't get why everyone loves this place. It has not been updated, cleaned, or maintained in 30-40 years, likely longer. Difference between old cool place and dirty dump; thus is a dark, dingy, dirty dump. Everything worn out, sticky tables, seats, etc. just gross. Burgers: everyone rants and raves about them. After living in the area for 2 years, I finally went to the restaurant. I have to say, the reviews are spot on. Huge burgers, absolutely delicious. We went at 9pm on a Friday night and it was still busy, but we did not have to wait. The burger I had was one they had "predesigned" that had water cress and bacon on it. Great combination.
