Hell yeah!!!! The burgers here are great!!!! They take a fresh hunk of ground beef and form the burger right there on the grill in front of you while you're watching! The fries are 1st class!!! The place is a little utilitarian inside but clean and in good repair. Heck, where else can you get a FRESH double cheeseburger and great fries for $6? (Usually you only get crap for this price.) Truly this place is a gem for the price. If I was going to point out one area of potential improvement, the buns are a little boring, but the beef more than makes up for it. My rating is based off of the terrible customer service. The two women working at the front during the day (specifically on 09-05-2021) have terribly rude attitudes. They're actually snotty and snicker at customers. Its ridiculous and just weird. They also have NO VISIBLE SIGNS that the place is cash only! Red Hot Ranch has become somewhat of an institution in my visits to Chicago. It's one of my favorite hot dog spots anywhere in these here United States of America. "No frills" is an understatement. At RHR, they're all about great fast food and care little about bells and whistles. With a minimalist menu focusing on hot dogs, burgers, and fries, there's a little taste for everyone. I suggest you go with the Chicago style hot dog, as that's what made them pseudo famous in the hood. You won't be disappointed. If the weather is nice, be sure to eat outside. The continued existence of Red Hot Ranch makes me happy to live in this part of Chicago. Red Hot checks key boxes for the nocturnal - open absurdly late, non-exististant decor, customers appropriately uncomfortable around each other, and a tight menu that delivers on salt, flavor, and grease. What's the best burger in Chicago? This eternal question led me to Red Hot Ranch in Lakeview. I've tried some places that have severely disappointed, some that got the job done, and some that let me experience a side of life that I never knew existed! I got to say, Red Hot Ranch made me feel some type of way. This place is a no-frills joint with a quick-bite diner feel. The menu is small but completely sufficient--burgers, dogs, fries, shakes. I got the double cheeseburger with fries. There are two ways to describe what I ate. #1 is a next level Big Mac. They have the same ingredients of lettuce, tomato, beef patties, and even their own version of a secret sauce. Of course Red Hot Ranch's burger outshines a Big Mac in every way possible, and it made me cry a little inside thinking back to the dozens of times I've ordered a Big Mac from McDonald's in the past. #2 is a tastier version of In-N-Out's Double Double. I am a fan of In-N-Out but there just might be a bit more love that goes into each of these Red Hot burgers. The crunch of the tiny patties excited my taste buds, the sauce kept the meal interesting, and the wonderful cheese soothed my palate. Not to mention, the fries were very nicely done. The hotdog was kind of a mess with tons of fries all stuck inside it. It was kind of annoying to have to pick off all the stuck on fries before being able to eat the hot dog. The Red Hot Ranch Burger. This is why you come to this location. Make sure you get the double, RHR style. The burger is smashed on the flattop grill, so it gets all sorts of crispy on the outside. Add some cheese, lettuce, onions, and RHR sauce, and you're good to go with a sack of their delicious fries. All for $5 - not a bad deal. This burger is available only at this location, and not the one on Western (sadly, they don't have the space for it there). The other RHR classics, like the fried shrimp and depression dogs, are just as good here as they are at the original. The space is new, clean, brightly lit, and open late. They have 4 dedicated parking spots in the lot, and good enough street parking around it (just be careful if you're crossing the street - people drive crazy fast down ashland to make the lights). The hot dog is awful, with a casing that's a bit too chewy. Otherwise, it's hard to go wrong here. The burger, fries and shake were all pretty good, with the fries being an incredible standout (this was as close to Five Guys' fries as I've had, really). But the big winner here is the price...my wife and I split a hot dog with fries, a double burger with fries, a soda, and a milkshake for $14...and that included a 75-cent tip. What a hidden gem. From the outside it looks like every other craptastic corner hot dog place that so populate the urban Chicago landscape. You know, the type of place where everything on the menu is under three bucks, comes frozen from Sysco, but does the job in ten minutes if you're in a pinch. I ordered their "house special" burger, and was flat out amazed when the guy pulled out a fresh ground beef ball, hand formed it, and cooked it right in front of me. I was so expecting a frozen patty that this absolutely blew my mind. He then proceeded to walk to the station next to the griddle, hand slice a fresh raw potato, and then double dip fry it so the fries where ridiculously fresh and crispy. The most amazing part? This place was inspired by the insanely popular west coast chain, In & Out Burgers. Red Hot Ranch's burgers are prepared in a very similar style. I've been to In and Out in California many times, and their burgers are very very good. But I'm telling you, the burgers here are even better than the original! Better quality ingredients, prepared with great care and consistency. And RHR's fries kick I&O's ass all over town. No contest. I&O has boring fries that don't add anything to the meal. But RHR's fries are hand-cut, skin on, probably double-fried. They are insanely delicious! In fact, the only place that dies fries better than RHR in my opinion is Al's Italian Beef. I love a great burger, and usually enjoy getting the more creative ones you'll find at places like Kuma's. But the double cheeseburger I had today was so incredibly good ($7.25 w fries and drink, plus tip for the counter folks), that I'd take it over Kuma's, Bad Apple, RockIt or just about any other gourmet burger. Sure I might be a bit biased because I live within walking distance of this place, but I'd say RHR is a dark horse for best burger in the city. No joke. I didn't even think of walking in until I read some write-up that their RHR burger is Chicago's closest thing to an In-N-Out burger, animal style. And that's pretty much a dead-on description. The meat and vegetables are fresh (definitely get a double), as are the fries, and you can have both for a total of $5. It's equally delicious late night ahead of a hangover as it is the next morning (I think they open at 10:30am?) to cure one. And weird as it may sound, their tail-off fried shrimp is damn good too. If there's one negative of this place it's that it's absolutely bright as hell, so maybe just bring your shades to keep your sanity. read more

I know I reside in the South Side, but I decided to take the Brown Line north to the Paulina station and walk all the way to this restaurant. I should have hold off to another day since it was snowing here and I survived walking back to the station after i got my meal. But it was well worth it. I just love everything that this small joint on the North Side offers. Great Burgers, as well as the rest of food that is offered in hot dog stands. This does taste better than what the establishment restaurant offer. Plus it is really cheap which is enough to buy more of this for a great value. Sunday night at 10:30pm.. there aren't that many options. I'm always down for fries so we pulled into the lot to grab some quick food. woooweee, we were in for a treat!! Food: - Polish dogs WITH fries - simple, topped with onion, mustard, and relish. I'm not originally from Chicago so I used to douse my dogs with a bunch of ketchup. One of the best burgers in the city, and that's saying a lot for all of the gourmet options we have! Wish I had heard about this place sooner - had no idea that they had been right around the corner for 3 months already. Just tried the RHR double cheeseburger, it was so good I had to order a single afterwards to top it off. Burger is perfectly cooked on a griddle - crispy outside and juicy in the middle. A healthy amount of fries are included for the cost of the burger, and they're perfectly crispy and salty as well. I was too full to sample anything else on the menu, but I foresee many more trips ahead. The fact that they're open really late is the icing on the cake with the warm weather on the horizon.
