Really wanted oysters on my short visit to Boston. I found this spot via Yelp and saw that they had inexpensive but delicious oysters. I order half a dozen oysters, 2 short necks, and a sea urchin, totally only $13. I had expected to pay more since the menu said that it was $2 per oyster. But it was only $1 on a Tuesday afternoon! The shucker was very friendly and gave me an extra sea urchin when the first one didn't have much meat in it. All the seafood were fresh. Very fresh oysters! Since it's a fish market, the size of oysters will be smaller than those of high-end restaurants so be aware. The uni plate was exceptional. Try to get it with poke bowl and make uni sushi with poke bowl rice with their soy-sesame oil sauce. The lobster roll was decent, but I've definitely had better. The price was fine, $16+ with tax. What I didn't like was the sprinkling of green onions on top. It added a flavor that I just wasn't expecting, and frankly doesnt go well with a lobster roll. Also, they really need to get their orders processing under control. My ticket was next after my friend's and she got a cooked sandwich and it still took several other orders before they could get my lobster roll out which was a bit strange. We spent 3 1/2 days in Boston and loved the local seafood. By far, the best meal we had was at Red's! We had the fried fish which was lightly battered and perfectly fried. I knew it was going to be great when I asked what type of fish they use and he said they were frying up a locally fresh caught and had to go ask what today's catch brought in. This is a great stop for seafood. We ordered clam chowder, lobster bisque, fish and chips, and fried oysters. Everything was very fresh and delicious. The bisque was very rich and creamy, and the clam chowder was perfectly balanced. The order of fried oysters is HUGE; we couldn't even finish it by sharing it. They were nicely fried, and the oysters themselves retained their flavor and tenderness very well. The fish and chips was also fresh and delicious, and also a big helping. The best thing about getting food here is that you pay a small fraction of the price that you would at a restaurant in the area for more quantity and quality of food. We had a feast and spent only about $30.00. It is takeout style because it's at the Public Market, but the market is actually such a nice place to sit and dine. Plus you get to explore the other local vendors for desserts and gifts. I will definitely return and bring friends and family to Red's Best for seafood. read more

So delicious! Best fish tacos. The way they batter the fish in smaller pieces works.... YUM. The lobster rolls are excellent as well. If you asked me yesterday what I would want for my last meal, I would have told you, without hesitation, an oyster po'boy from Acme Oyster in New Orleans. I went to Reds Best to get something close, not expecting anything but a reasonable Boston substitute for my New Orleans love. Oh. My. God. Perfectly fried oysters, perfectly dressed. Recently, my colleague and I decided to visit the Boston Public Market for lunch. We both like seafood and were happy to discover Red's Seafood with some tempting entrees and saw some folks chowing down on their lobster rolls. A fried fish sandwich seemed reasonably priced ($7). I selected crabcakes at $8 which (after asking) was described as two cakes - pretty good deal! My colleague originally was originally going to go for the fish sandwich but, since he loves scallops, decided to splurge for them (at $12). We decided to also split an order of onion rings ($6).There were a number of folks waiting for pickup - the wait turned out to be longer than expected and seemingly people who ordered after us had their orders delivered earlier (perhaps expected depending on what was ordered).. Each ordered item came in a small cardboard box. The crabcakes were quite good, nicely cooked and with lots of crab and not much filler - although they lost some of their heat by the time we sat down in the market's nearby "kitchen" area. A nice tartar sauce was provided but had to be asked for. For the scallops, the person behind the counter first put a bunch in the box - then took some out. When questioned, she said an order needed to be a certain weight. Since by the time we were served no one else was waiting, the fate of the taken back cooked scallops was not clear. Hint to Red's - don't give and then take back - at least in plain sight of the customer - it makes the purveyor look cheap. To top it off, my colleague described them as somewhat tasteless - don't expect him back again. The onion rings were heavily crusted in batter and a bit over crunchy (onion cookies) - and it was a bit difficult to taste the onion - they certainly were not greasy and a lot of the batter flaked off. They were not the kind that one had a huge desire to finish, All in all a mixed bag (or more appropriately box). I may sample Red's again but will try different items!. read more

This is a great place to try some local species that are tough to find elsewhere, and support the local small-scale fishing industry while you're at it. These are about the freshest oysters I've ever had. I'm not sure why, but I had one of each (2 oysters + 1 clam) and they all tasted quite similar. One as called Wellpoint, and I forget the other names. They also were quite salty, which I'm confused about. On the West Coast, even when they are fresh and I shuck them myself in Tomales Bay, they are much more "fishy". I would come back, as its so convenient inside the Boston Public Market. read more

They are a fish wholesaler based on the Boston Fish Pier but they participate in the farmer's markets around Boston as Red's Best. They are in Dewey Square (Tuesday), City Hall Plaza (Wednesday), Eastie (Thursday), Ashmont (Friday), and Mattapan (Saturday). They only have the freshest fish, all filleted and packaged in ziplock. Recently we're had striped bass and the best blue fish ever. $10 and 2 can eat like royalty. I'm reluctant to tout them, as they only have a limited amount of fish in their portable cooler, but I can't help it! read more
