On my way North, I decided to deviate from my route to check out this hot spot. I expected a line and patiently waited my turn. One hour wait in line and maybe 5 min wait for food. this place bee closed in tha winter times, but I been thinking where's to take mar and me for lunches in tha summertime. if you go at tha right times tha line don't bee too bad. mar has tha allzhamjers and I got hit in tha head along times ago, so we likes to go places for lunch. So I know their reputation brings them in a lot of business, but they are the real thing. The lobster rolls are fresh picked and very tender lobster, and a ton of it for a decent price. While I always prefer my lobster warm, what they serve is chilled. But the very warm drawn butter, as much as you want of it, makes it so delicious when you dunk the lobster in it and completely warmed the lobster. So it's dripping with warm butter when you eat it. I've come to maine numerous times over the years, and it took until now to learn this? Waited in line for over an hour, not many people in front of us, taking orders was slow until we found the order taker was also setting up the food trays for delivery outside, not efficient and some what dirty considering the person was also handling cash only. Before you go you must know a few things: *it's a very long wait *it's cash only *it's worth it We went for an overnight in Boothbay on a Wednesday and stopped at Reds to try the much hyped giant lobsta rolls for the first time. The line appeared to be pretty reasonable and I said to my date "oh it probably moves fast". Little did we know...we waited about 75-90 minutes in a "short" line. I couldn't understand why until I got to the front. It's a TINY space for several staff to take orders and payment, cook, put the order together and even deliver it to outdoor tables as well as cleaning the tables for quick turnover (not alot of tables so they have to keep them turned.) And it is kept very clean! Most of the young staff are tasked with wearing all the hats. However they were all extremely pleasant and very polite! There is a private ATM at the shack charging $4 if you didn't bring cash, but it is CASH ONLY! My date really wanted a hot dog and we had made plans for a nice dinner elsewhere but after this long of a wait we decided this would be dinner. So he did get a hot dog - $1 for the no-frills - but the true test was the lobster roll. I detest mayo in any form and almost every place serves rolls with mayo. Lately many seafood shacks have the option of melted butter (Connecticut style) and it's opened up more options for me. This roll is cold plain lobster (not warm) served with a side of melted butter. I would normally prefer warmed lobster but this worked out just fine. I had to eat it with a fork, dipping it in the butter. There was So. Much. Lobster!! It was sweet and FRESH, and absolutely delicious! $36 was a deal. Oh yeah - he also had a $1 hot dog! We probably should've split one lobsta roll but... We also ordered onion rings because they looked amazing with light puffy tempura batter. Not alot in a small order but more than enough. We also decide to have a "side" of scallops for $15. I love scallops and these didn't disappoint. There were only 4, but they were huge, juicy and battered - cooked to perfection! I've found some really good lobster rolls locally and I have some local faves so I won't make the 2.5 hour drive just for this - but if I'm in the area I will go back and I will wait in that looong line again!! It's hard to review Red's - it's not going to be an enjoyable experience, and you're going to have to wait in line. We thought we'd get lucky getting here around opening on a Wednesday during the fall. We were pleased to see that the line didn't *seem* that long, at least by LA standards. But the line is a facade - you'll notice ample seating and no wait times after you order. There's a wait because the staff artificially bottleneck orders by fulfilling them as they are placed before moving onto the next guest. Why do they do that? It's hard to say beyond wanting there to be a constant wait. Was it worth the wait? I fluctuated between 2 and 3 stars, but I'm rounding to 3 because of the star of the show - the lobster roll. Yes, the lobster roll here was the best I've had in Maine. Maybe ever. Mostly because the sandwich is packed full of juicy, delicious meat. They give you lots of butter. It's fantastic. The rest of the food was not good. The scallops, which people hype up, were honestly terrible lol. I have no idea what people are talking about - they have a sweet breading around them that I can't even describe as a proper fry. It's more like a donut-esque wrap around the scallop and were overcooked on the inside. Same with the onion rings, but at least the texture just seemed to work better. Also the blue cheese sauce was impressively tasty for the rings. The experience here was agonizing. Standing in the sun for an hour and forty minutes for basically no reason, while the staff yells in a megaphone that "this customer just told us they had the best roll of their life!" Like ok great can you please just give me my sandwich now lol. The worst part is you will drop around $100 if you come here with for two people. It's a mind boggling price for a stand with ok food. We even got charged for two bottles of water even though we asked for two cups (I know they had tap water because they gave us some in-line). There's lots of signs saying that a true sign of success is if someone tries your food twice. I will not try this restaurant twice, but I'm glad that at least I had a fantastic lobster roll. read more

I know.....the wait is long but I think it's totally worth it. We have been coming here ( from NC) for our anniversary for the last 11 years and we have waited anywhere from 40 min to 1 hr 40 min. It's just part of the experience. They are really good about taking care of people in line....water, umbrellas, even bites of various items on the menu. Plus treats and water for your pets. But the real star is the lobster rolls. Chunks of cold lobster meat, the whole lobster, with Kate's melted butter on a delicious toasted bun. OMG! The hype is real! My husband and I got here at 10:00 a.m. and good thing we came early as there was already a line! The wait was definitely worth it as the market price for lobster on this day (09.09.22) was only $25. Keep in mind, prices fluctuate based on market value. Red Eats opens at 11:30 a.m, by the time they opened, the line was backed to the parking area, so you know this just be travelers and locals favorite lobster rolls spot. When they opened, it was true hospitality through and through from offering customers in the back of the line samples of shrimp fritters to offering customers umbrellas to shield from the sun rays. Okay, now to the food! Oh my goodness, I can't put into words how delicious the lobster was so fresh, sweet, cooked to perfection, and top it off with the translucent butter.. to rewrite and explaining the deliciousness makes me salvate all over again. We also ordered their homemade onion rings after seeing an order of them come out and I am so glad we did. The batter was amazing, slightly sweet as if you're also eating sweet potato fries, it was a perfect crisp bite and a good small portion with the lobster roll. Not impressed. I have no idea if they use frozen lobster or if my roll's lobster was just sitting in ice too long, but parts of my lobster meat were frozen. It was a really average roll. Given the ridiculous price tag, the roll was inexcusable. As a Mainer, I have to admit it's just as much of a tourist trap as I always thought it might be. For a superior roll, the Lobster Hail in Damariscotta (incredible with the citrus mayo), Muscongus Bay Lobster in Round Pond (best ambiance), Five Islands in Georgetown (amazing rolls overflowing with lobster), are all vastly superior. Sprague's, across Route 1 from Red's is also much better; fresher, more generous. read more

This place is one of our must-visit spots in Maine! We went here last year for the first time and waited for 2 hours to be able to order. But we were completely satisfied and in love with the food that we consumed. This time, luckily, we only waited for 30 minutes. We were reminded of how good this place is. Just plain and simple chilled lobster on top of warm bread with a side of warm and sweet butter. There's more lobster than there is bread, but that's a good problem to have! Red's Eats is an experience and if you're anywhere near Wicasset, Maine and love lobster you should give it a try! First of all you're going to wait. The line snakes north and around the block. They don't pre-make anything so they prepare your order when you get to the counter. We waited a hour and a half but you meet people from all over and three times the staff came out and handed out bottled water, cold shrimp and fried fish bites so it passes the time and wets your appetite. Their recipe is pretty simple, they take a cold 1-1/2 lb lobster and put it on a Kaiser roll with drawn butter, lemon and L&T on side. It was $34 but my wife and I split one and it was plenty. Plenty of picturesque spots to picnic by the water. Easily the best lobster roll I ever had! I question the operation but it's family owned and they have been successful doing it their way. Last October I was up in the area from NY on a day trip and decided to stop here for lunch. The tourist season was drawing to a close and I assumed the wait time would much less than before when I came during the spring. I was wrong. I am not a lobster guy, but I have had their scallops before (which were awesome) and I wanted them again. I figured I would also order a fried chicken sandwich and make it a complete, balanced meal. Some items were listed on the signs as being sold out for the season but neither the chicken or the scallops had such a notice. So, I got in line and waited, and waited and waited. I was actually in line for over two hours, but I kept saying to myself ("I have already wasted___ much time in line... I would rather stick it out then leave empty handed"). Many people got in line behind me and left for the other place next door when the wait got too long. I don't own a smart phone, so I had nothing to pass the time but wait. When I finally got to the front of the line, I was told that they were sold out of the chicken AND the scallops (neither was marked as such on their menu boards). Thus, I had literally waited in line for 2+ hours for nothing. Not wanting to go away hungry, I got a hotdog. It was a good hotdog, but definitely not worth the wait. While there are many lessons from this experience, the one I will remember most is: if you visit at the end of the season, find out if they have what you want before committing 2 hours to standing in line! read more
