He was so pleasant and open to suggestions, my car doors were open within MINUTES. While he was working on my car, THREE different people stopped to tell me how awesome of a service Reed Brothers Security is. Biggest waste of $120 I've ever spent. My very complicated front door lock was binding up. A nice man came to my house, man-handled my door open, sprayed $0.20 worth of grease on the mechanism, couldn't figure out what happened to cause it to bind, and left. I knew it was $60 just to walk through my door and $120 minimum, but come on....I would never feel comfortable charging someone $120 for 5 min of time and not diagnosing the problem. $60 would have been fine, since he did drive all of 3 blocks to my house... but he did absolutely nothing for me, thought he might cut a neighbor a break on charging the full $120?! Pretty disappointed. In response to Marie's comment: I never said I didn't understand it would cost $120. But since he didn't fix my problem (no I don't think man-handling the door open and spraying a little grease in the lock is a fix) I didn't expect to pay the full amount for a bandaid, especially since it was so little time and effort on his part. I could have forced the door open myself (and I'm 8.5mo pregnant), but given that my door has a very intricate locking mechanism, not just your average single cylinder deadbolt, this seemed like a job for a professional. I maintain that I didn't have a good experience with this company and will in the future choose to take my business to the many other locksmiths in Oakland who aren't going to nickel-and-dime their neighbors - and are quite a bit cheaper. read more

I have used Reed Brothers several different times and they have always done a great job. I had all the doors to my house re-keyed - it was quick, clean and surprisingly inexpensive! The tech made me excellent quality keys for no extra charge. When I had car keys made at the store the tech came out to my car to make sure they worked well! I had and absolutely terrible experience in this business. I came to get a key made for a special lock. when I bought the home 10year's ago I had to go in to the Reed bros in order show a copy of the deed to the home to prove that I owned it in order for them to make copies of the key, at the time I found it comforting if a bit unsettling to have to go to such lengths but such is the price of using Israeli locks. Flash forward ten years and now I try to get copies and when I go in to get the copies I am told they don't have any record of my coming in or my deed, which they copied the first time and that they again will need to see the deed to the property to make copies, again I complied but now they want a video of me in front of of rental property with the address showing and me open the deadbolt with the key serial number showing and a signed affidavit. WTF Ok here's the kicker, 5 year's ago I had the handy man doing some work on the property and I didn't have extra key to give him so I told him to just not worry about the security door. Imagine my surprised when I showed up later to lock the security door and it was locked, I called my handy and asked how he managed to lock up, he said he took the serial number off the lock and went to Reed bros and got a copy made.....My handy man was a 6'5 south African Rasta white guy I am 5'7 African American read more

Around 11 pm, my key broke off into my front door lock. Immediately, I called several locksmiths that popped up in a google search on my phone. Each one was unavailable or had some excuse why they couldn't come out. I called Reed Brothers and was connected to Randy within 5 minutes of calling. I explained what happened, he asked me some information about the key. Then told me he would be over in 15 minutes. He arrived exactly within 15 minutes. After arriving he was able to open my door with his tools. Pulled out the broken key and oiled the lock. It was good as new. The fee is a bit steep for a quick lockout, but the price is fair. Sometimes you have to pay when someone shows up at 11:30 pm to fix a broken key. Randy was a true professional and I would not hesitate to call Reed Brothers if I had another problem with my lock. As far as I'm concerned Reed Brothers is the best locksmith company in the East Bay. I asked Randy for one of their stickers and I will gladly tell anyone I know looking for a locksmith to call Reed Brothers. I love seeing small business like Reed Brothers that do good work. If you plan on using this company for lock problems on you residence, get ready to shell out. They have av$60 visit fee, on top of other costs. They charge $120 an hour, then $60 for 30 minute increments, even if you only use a small portion of the increment. They do show up fairly quickly when called, but my repairman showed up with no tool kit and had to return to his vehicle 5 times for tools and parts, a lengthy process as we are in a secured condo hi rise. He also spent about 10 minutes on the phone to his office when his first attempts to open the door failed. Total cost $267. High cost for a stuck lock. read more

Just had very disappointing experience here. This store used to be within walking distance from me in Oakland. They had to move to this San Leandro location and they are the ONLY ones allowed to make replacement or duplicate keys for GateMate locks. So, I waited until our hybrid car was available [to save on gas] and drove the 14 miles one way to get there a week ago. Had to wait an hour because only one person is on the front counter during their lunch hour. Got two duplicates of our GateMate key at $20 each. Drove home. Keys did NOT work. Waited a week until our hybrid car was available again, and drove there again today. They announced that the duplicate keys made last week were made from the wrong blanks. No apology. Not one. No "We certainly inconvenienced you so we'd like to make it up to you." No "Let's examine your receipt so we can see who made the faulty duplicate keys so we can instruct and educate them on how to make the correct duplicates." Lousy communication. Terrible. But, they have a "lock on the market" [sad pun] so no recourse. 56 miles for not much benefit. read more

I had a great experience with the sales team about acquiring a specific key for an Abus lock. They had to special order which took a bit of time, but was happy when I finally acquired them. I cannot remember if we discussed pricing for the keys; it was a bit more price per key than my boss was expecting, it was special ordered, but I was happy to find a locksmith that was able to deal with this special request. Last friday my front door lock is not working. I called for a lock smith , it costed me 150 dollars to come out my house, and tell me your door lock was no good. you cannot replace the lock . you should change the door. then left. Next day i called Reed Brothers in oakland. They understood my worry. THey told me bring the lock to our shop, let us take a look. May be we can fix it. I brought it in. they told me they will call me an hour and let me know the problem. when I came back to the shop, they said it is no problem. all it needed is lubricate . Reed Brothers Security saved the day for us - again! Yesterday our heavy, metal security door at our service entrance broke off the hinges. We needed to get it fixed the same day, since this is our only service entrance and being out of commission would be a huge impact. One of the owners of Reed was able to make time to come out and weld on new, heavy duty hinges. He even painted a lot of the door that was rusting badly. Someone tried to kick in my front door -- on a Saturday night while I was home, no less. Needless to say, it was really scary, but luckily, they didn't get in. They did, however, severely damaged the metal screen door, and I spent some sleepless nights worried about another break-in attempt. My neighbor suggested Reed Brothers, and I am glad she did! Within a couple of days they sent someone out (unfortunately I'm blanking on his name) who was sympathetic, knowledgeable, courteous and professional. Not only did they have a quality solid screen door in stock, but he found someone to install it that same day. The installation team was also very professional, efficient, and had quality workmanship. Very satisfied, and would definitely hire them again for security-related work (although hopefully not under such stressful circumstances). read more

Set an appointment 2 weeks ahead, paid $80 for the meeting at my house, was given a two hour window. The field person showed up 30 minutes late. I called the company to ask when he was coming towards the end of the scheduled time, because there was no courtesy call from Reed Brothers. During the meeting I was told by the field guy that he would send me a quote that night or by the next day. Four days later I had to call to ask for my quote. They sent a contract form with no price listed. I emailed back and asked them to price it, and to separate the prices for the two jobs I had discussed with the field guy. They didn't do that. They didn't apologize for all their mishaps even when I sent them an email explaining their many errors. The absolute kicker: their price was outrageous...2 security doors, one with the hinge in a new orientation, and a basic wood door installed for $4000 (and I supplied the locks)! Unbelievably unprofessional and terrible customer service, and balk-worthy prices. A few years ago I went to Reed Brothers to have a laser cut car key made, and they did that very well, taking the key to the cutter for a second round so it worked more smoothly in my door/ignition locks, so they're not bad at everything. read more

These guys must have played with locks as babies. They seem to know everything and they seem overstaffed enough that you never have to wait long. They manage to make me feel that getting a key cut is just as important as the guy beside me wanting to get a $3,000 security system. I used them many times and I've never been disappointed but I'm still sure if there was ever a problem they would make it right. I called Reed Brothers to get a quote on a security swing gate at a rental in Richmond. They told me it's out of their "free quote" area and the fee would be $80. I am outraged! Reed Brothers is sort of an institution in Oakland having been around for years. Some Oaklanders used a handheld battering ram to break thru my deadbolt a few days ago (while I was home) so I was shopping for a new deadbolt lock. I knew I needed a grade 1 to start to slow these perps down a little. I barely had time to load my shotgun. The counter person told me the pros and cons of different models and I selected a $200+ lock for which each additional key is $12. They sent out an installer within an hour to put in the new lock. Unfortunately his craftsmanship was lacking and he installed the strike plate crooked. There is also about a 1/16" slop when the door is closed so it's easy to move the door in and out when it's closed. Maybe try Glenview Lock and Key if you prefer an installer who takes some pride in their work and don't want to be a burglar's target. read more

Two weeks ago I bought two stun guns, one for me and one for my wife. My wife decided she did not want one. I tried to return the item UNOPENED with the original receipt and waited for 10 minutes while the man helping me went to the back room to discuss the return with the boss. I was informed that they would waive the "no returns" policy on electronic devices, but that they would charge me a 20% restocking fee. To be fair, this policy is stamped on my receipt; however, as a small business owner myself, I understand that policies are in place to protect you from scammers and jerks. In the interest of good customer service (something that should set a small business apart from big-box retailers and the internet), exceptions can and should be made. I tried to ask the man helping me why it was necessary to charge me 20% to restock a small unopened box containing a stun gun the size of a pack of cigarettes and he just walked away as if to say, "F*** you, we're done." Well, Reed Brothers, we're done. Maybe I'm wrong to expect an exception to your return policy, but in any case the customer service was appalling. They say that a customer with a good experience tells one other person, but a customer with a bad experience tells 10 people. I'm sure you can guess how many people I'm going to tell. read more

A few days after they installed a metal security door, it began to rust. From that point on, it was nothing but hell. ZERO customer service. The manager avoided me like the plague each time I called (twice daily) till eventually I threatened to initiate legal action. Eventually they replaced the white door with a black door, but refused to refund the $30 extra that I had paid for the white one. Somewhat unbelievably, this is the second time I've had this identical experience at this shop (and the last because I will not be back). I go in. There are 4 or 5 people walking around who work there. No one else waiting. I take the requisite number. 5 min go by. Then 10 min. No one says welcome or 'I'll be with you in a minute'. They just walk around behind the counter to their various stations with no eye contact and no communication to the waiting customer. After about 12 min I put the number down on their keyboard on the counter and left. I've never written a bad review on yelp or anywhere. Second experience compels me to simply let them know. I'm really digging their style here. I ventured in here on Friday to purchase a stun gun and was shepherded by one of the engaging associates to the Jolt 10M handheld piece. I'd concluded that tools of these sorts have value to me, having been stalked earlier this week. I paid $60 and left, feeling content with my investment, only to find that online retailers were selling the exact same equipment for $40 less. I'm all about giving preference to the brick and mortar mom and pop, but the disparity in rate was too significant to ignore. Perturbed, I came in today and was politely informed by one of the associates of their no return policy on electronics, which irked me some. However, he encouraged me to state my case to the owner, and I did. He listened to me judiciously and offered me half off as consolation, which was much closer to the online price. I proposed that he simply give me a second one free, so that I could give one to my girlfriend as a gift, and that would equate to the same half off price for each. He cheerily agreed and even engaged me with some insight about manufacturer quality and regaled in tidbits about other non sequitir orders of business. I really respect the way he accommodated me, and I can confidently say he earned himself repeat business in addition to an advocate who will refer others to Reed Brothers Security. Guys like this are the reason I like Oakland. read more
