Refinery Rooftop was by far one of the highlights from my trip to New York City! I was able to get a reservation for a Friday evening on the main outdoor patio space, and they gladly obliged my request for the ideal seating to look at the Empire State Building from (as first-time visitors to NYC). I appreciated that the patio space was kept exclusive to reservations (there's a bar space inside), even on a Friday night. You'd be surprised how many LA places have little to no concern for reserved spaces on the weekend! Service was very attentive and friendly, and any items we ordered were out in no time at all. She also offered to take a picture of my partner and I together when she saw us taking pictures for each other! For food, we ordered a plate of calamari, which was perfectly cooked and absolutely delicious to enjoy. The cocktails were also creative, strong, and enjoyable! All in all, everything worked out perfectly and we had a wonderful evening on the rooftop while enjoying an unbeatable view of the Empire State Building. I not only recommend this spot, but I advise coming here over one of the observation decks, as the experience is far better! read more

Heard about this spot on IG as a "must go" if visiting SD. Worth it. Sat upstairs and the wait staff were wonderful, food was prompt/delicious, and the vibe was fantastic. Zero complaints. I suggest getting reservations early as we were the first guests of the day. read more

This gorgeous rooftop is in the heart of midtown and is the perfect place to host a brunch or grab lunch or dinner. I walked in with a friend during lunch and we were sat right away. Their brunch drinks are so good and the food is even better. I shared the chicken club and the veggie sliders with a friend and they were both delicious. The sliders were not dry in fact they were perfectly moist and had some of the best sauces on the bread, the whole thing was great. The chicken club was also very yummy and if you get fries with it, it'll be the perfect lunch! Views are of course awesome especially if you're seated on the edge of the rooftop. Can't wait to come back for more meals here! read more

I arrived here with my girlies, and we had reservations. Even though we were a few minutes early, we were seated right away. The rooftop is on top of the hotel, so you have to head inside and take the elevator up. I loved the seating--they gave us a nice spot with the Empire State Building in the background, which was such a cool view. It was a bit windy, but the umbrellas were sturdy--though, in the middle of our meal, we did notice that someone's umbrella a few tables down toppled over. Our waitress was attentive and on top of our needs. The food was absolutely delicious! I'm already planning to go back for the Caesar wrap, which I paired with tater tots. We also tried the pizza and some sliders, and those were really good too. The drinks were spot-on, and the dessert was even better. I can't wait to come back here again in the spring! What a gorgeous spot for drinks and a light meal! A group of us got together here for a mini reunion, and it was nice to be able to order directly at the bar for both drinks and bites. Though a bit expensive, the prices were to be expected given the most gorgeous rooftop setting and view of the Empire State Building. Just stunning, and the bartenders were fantastic, as were the servers. read more

On a little NYC excursion we chose the Refinery Rooftop based on ambiance alone. This was not out normal criteria yet it worked a charm because the place was a 5 star find! When you enter the building there's a bar on the ground floor with jazz piano playing and an ultra hip vibe. Go to the 13th floor and you find a little piece of paradise. This place is comfy and just relaxing. The hostess found us a table quickly even without a reservation. Once seated we were greeted by a friendly food runner and our waitress seconds later. We ordered a couple beers and were served swiftly. We tried a couple appetizers and they were fantastic. The kitchen serves you at a mellow pace so you can enjoy without being rushed. That's what I felt was nice, we were able to sit and chill without being pushed out to accommodate more guests. What a cool place! read more

What a fun place to go to on a beautiful day! You could see the Empire State Building - go on the rooftop and take a beautiful picture -which is exactly what we did. The food was very good - shrimp tacos delicious, salads were very tasty and the drinks were excellent. We had a very attentive waitress so that was a bonus. Stopped by the Refinery Rooftop for after work drinks on Thursday night. There were seven people in our group and we had two rounds of cocktails and Prosecco. I had the Monkey Ball - the bartender made it martini style as I requested. It was delish but tad bit too sweet for my preference, in fact I think it would have been better on ice as it was intended to. The bar was quite busy and our bartender turned out drinks in a timely fashion. It is a great rooftop spot. I would recommend a reservation, especially for big groups. We came here for lunch. It's a great place to go when the weather is nice. You can see the Empire State Building from the roof. I ordered the Double Patty Burger. It had a good flavor. It's a little weird because the burger comes with salad instead of fries, so if you want fries you have to order them separately. Overall the food is good, but it's on the pricey side. read more

We really enjoyed this spot as tourist before a show. We decided to grab drinks, espresso martini + margs and split some appetizers. The drinks were good and the food was yummy as well with the pretzel bites and mac n cheese being my favorite. The real vibe is the view though. Had reservation on Saturday night @ 10:30. We arrived at approximately 10:30 and were seated right away, always a plus in my book. This is the 3rd rooftop bar we've visited in the last couple years, and I enjoyed it the most as it checked all boxes. Although the section we were seated in was not very large, we were in an outdoor area with no roof. The roof on the interior is glass and appears to be retractable. The decor was inviting, as with other rooftop bars. 2 things set it apart. #1 The menu, although not extensive, there were enough choices to have a full meal. Most places have a limited amount of food options with most being appetizers. I chose the chicken wings, and GF had the pepperoni flatbread. Very hea The 2nd reason this goes to the top of my list is the DJ. Others play piped in music; this bar had a live DJ. I would give the DJ a 4.5 out of 5 stars. I can't remember hearing any mistakes, and his selection of songs played/mixes was "On Point". GF impressed by music also. We visit NYC several times a year and our routine is to visit a bar/restaurant once and the next time find something new. However I keep a list of places that I would return to, and Refinery Rooftop is most definitely on that list!! We thoroughly enjoyed our time in the establishment!! read more

This is a busy rooftop! A bit too packed with tiny tables for me and hard to have conversation. The outdoor view is a bit skewed just based on the framing. The drinks were OK but not something I would be dying to come back to. We also ordered the Cacio E Pepe Tator Tots which sound amazing but they kind. of just tasted like plain tator tots and the sauce which was probably the driver for the 'cacio e pepe' wasn't really giving what it should be and we needed a larger sauce container for the quantity of tots. We were looking for a rooftop bar after our Broadway show. Our usual favorite was unexpectedly closed so we were very happy to find this one. Getting up there was a bit of a hassle. The guests going up and the person running the elevator were a bit rude to us. There is one elevator for the bar, you'll wait behind a rope and they'll take you up once the elevator arrives. Once we got up there, the views were stunning. We had a great view of the Empire State Building. The space was also beautiful. I adored the interior design. It was a great mix of industrial and greens. I ordered an aperol spritz and my partner got a Manhattan. Our bill came out to about $40. The drinks were very good. I loved our bartender, he was cool and kind. Before we went up to the bar they made a bit of a big deal about needing a reservation, but a lot of people there just sat down at tables and weren't asked to move, so we did the same. I'm guessing you needed a reservation for the outdoor tables with the views. It was also around midnight right before they closed at 1am. We were a group of four and had a good time here. read more

You really can't beat the view at this rooftop bar. You get a nice clear view of the Empire State Building which can be seen from inside or outside. It is beautiful to see it all lit up at night. I have been here to Refinery Rooftop on a couple occasions when visiting NYC. The bar itself it located on the 13th floor of the Refinery Building. Dress is casual comfort according to their website. I have never eaten here and so can't much about the food. But I have been here for drinks. Security has always been nice and helpful. Sometimes there is a bit of a wait going up the elevator. Drinks are pricey (my margarita was $20), but I expect that being in New York City. My knock about this place is that I have found the bartender service to be just ok. It's a chore to get their attention and there is definitely favoritism to certain customers. But overall you can't beat the view here. The crowd is pretty laid back and I have always been able to get in without any hassles. read more

They squeezed diners right next to each other rather than spreading them throughout the restaurant..and I mean like, less than 1 ft from each other. Rooftop view was lovely! Liz our server was friendly and attentive. She talked us through the menu and made great suggestions. Music and vibe was on point. Playing 90s/2000 favorites with a DJ during our meal. We started with calamari and then got the Caprese panini and burger. Everything we got was well seasoned, good potion size, and cooked at the right temperature. Love the different options, bar service, table service, high and low tops, and casual seating as well. What's not to like? Staff was nice. Kennie, the bartender... on it. It's hard to screw up a beer and he did not, in fact, screw it up. He kept up some banter... but not too much. The Refinery Rooftop is a trendy and hip rooftop bar/restaurant for the beautiful people of Manhattan. I lowered its hip quotient exponentially as soon as I departed the elevators. The eye candy provided a better view than the Empire State Building. The bartenders were pleasant enough until they threatened to take our chairs at 3:30 PM. Okay, we'll skedaddle at 3:30 and allow the Refinery to cater to their gorgeous demographic. If this is your thing, you'll love the Refinery Rooftop. This is a pretty nice spot for a boozy brunch with your friends after a night out. The restaurant looked very modern and pretty with a nice breeze to combat the hot sun where our table was. We had multiple bottles of champagne and orange juice and the service was friendly and responsive. We ordered a bunch of starters to share and they were all really good. My favorites were the cacio e pepe tater tots and the Mac and cheese with added truffle. Whenever we go to brunch, we always order an eggs Benedict, but I would have to say the eggs Benedict did not satisfy us as much. There was just so much spinach in the benny that by the end of our meal we still had a mountain of spinach left on top of the remaining garden salad. The perfect spot to wrap up a Saturday afternoon! The views are absolutely stunning, and the ambiance strikes the right balance--lively yet relaxed, with a great mix of ages. Came here for brunch and it wasn't bad. I am so so skeptical of rooftop places and their food and drink because typically they rely on the fact that they're a rooftop to garner business AVOCADO TOAST 4/5 WATERMELON FIZZ 4/5 VEGGIE SLIDERS 4/5 CAESAR WRAP 4.5/5 - surprisingly good and not dry or plain. Honestly the food is good but nothing mind blowing but still would reconsider going here since the food does make the mark but also rooftop vibes combined make it a worthwhile experience. This place has a cool vibe from the minute you walk off the elevator. Our first visit was for a quick snack and a drink. We had the hummus and the meatballs, both were fantastic. The hummus may be one of the best bites of our trip. The drinks were delicious! Staff were friendly and very efficient. A great spot to view one of the iconic buildings in NYC, the Empire State building. A quaint layout with a warm and inviting feel attended to buy a professional staff. The bartenders are skilled at their cocktail making craft and you can easily get lost in wanting to try a number of drinks. We did not eat, but the food looks tasty. This rooftop is located within a hotel and features a great view of the Empire State Building. There menu features a variety of items from drinks to appetizers to food. When I tried to do a reservation online it shows a minimum of $100-$150 needs to be spent depending on the time of the day. I don't know if that applies to walk ins.

Is this restaurant dog friendly?

The last time we were there (March) there was a girl with a French bulldog. Perhaps it was a service dog, but I'm not sure.

I cancelled a reservation being that I was not aware of the age limit and was charged? I had sent a message when reservation was made requesting I for being that it was for a 17 year old birthday and never heard back. Hope some can help with this.

For some prominent restaurants If you cancel too late, they will charge you a fee but you should call. A lot of restaurants are not answering emails.

Is the rooftop open in January?

We went for during Christmas and the outside portion is closed off but if you look at pictures you'll see a glass roof which still allows for the rooftop atmosphere even in the winter.

Based on when I was there for brunch, it's top 40. It's in the background so you can still have a full conversation even if you're sitting a bit far from each other.

Should I make a reservation for drinks on a Saturday night?

I would make a reservation. I went there on a weeknight after work and our group needed a reservation. I don't know if it is a requirement, but I would call / email them to make sure you get your spot. Great place for drinks, BTW.

One aspect that needs some "refining" is the attitude of the staff at the door and the setup at the entry which ruins the experience from the very beginning. The velvet rope setup and subsequent haggling by the doorman is quite tacky and pretentious. It would appear that the venue is trying to present an image of "chic" and "exclusive" with velvet ropes and arbitrary "reservations only" excuses. This is midtown manhattan, not south beach...sorry. Attempted entry with a group of young, diverse professionals who were all dressed well and totally sober. Oh and don't forget that the number of females also far outnumbered the males and it was still somewhat early in the evening. Was at first told that "only reservations" but you can try waiting in the line which was short. Fine. People were being let in off the line, only to have our party (and others) randomly turned away. Why bother telling people to wait if there was no intention of allowing them in? I found the door "policy" to be quite obnoxious as well as the manner in which we and others were treated, including calling for security to move females off the line which were not bothering anyone or causing any scene at all and who's path to walk away was blocked by a crowd of people pleading to get in. Of course, the most pretentious and obnoxious aspect of this all might be management's response to less than stellar reviews which is the standard retort of "rooftop refinery isn't for everyone" Can you please clarify who exactly is it for? As a sidenote, we all got into another local rooftop lounge the same night and had a good time, plenty of other locations close by. read more

Racism is rampant at this business. I'd highly recommend going elsewhere if you are a person of color and don't want differential treatment because of it. Unfortunately my earlier review was deleted because I mentioned the full name of the employee (bartender) who was racist towards me when I was at Refinery, his first name is Declan, and this person demanded my card when a guy tried to buy me a drink at the bar. He said "he already bought you a drink, now I want to see your card." He had been giving me weird looks all night, and unfortunately, I can totally see that he had an eye on me and wanted to make sure I was put in my place. My friend actually posted a review about what happened on Google reviews, but the manager responded to it by saying that we were putting drinks on "unsuspecting tourists" tab. I actually made friends with the guy who bought those drinks so-- to the manager: sir, if you want his number to check with him that he was actually just trying to buy me a drink, I'm more than happy to connect you. He was JUST as appalled that your employee did this to me. Instead of protecting your employee's discrimination against women of color, maybe have a conversation with them so that people aren't treated so terribly when they visit your business. Another employee literally told me to report him, that's why I had the picture in the last review of his name. It's really that simple. Just tell your employees to not treat customers like that. This had to be one of the worst bar experiences I've ever had in my life. From a rude busboy to a waitress to an unattentive hostess with a bad attitude. They're only saving grace was the manager apologizing for the bad behavior. Which I think the manager should really look at his employees to where he explained that there was a lack of caring of communication because of the language barrier which is a poor excuse for rudeness and people not conducting themselves in a proper businesslike manner especially in a service business. Hi Steve , We did check in with your hostess and there wasn't a problem what time to be seated. Once it was an available seat the hostess said it was ours said no problem in the area would close at 11 PM. Then the busboy came over and said we're not allowed to sit there slammed the sign on the table when we were trying to understand what he was saying was rude to us then I called the waitress over and she said she's not allowed to service because we didn't go to the hostess which we had. It was nice of your manager to buy us a round with three of your employees truly having a bad attitude and maybe just a long night or day. I believe it started because of your hostess not informing the staff she sat us. Still there was no reason for the other employees to engage that way. This location discriminates against people of color, black people in particular. It is obvious this is not their usual clientele and by the way they treat us, it appears they would like to keep it this way. I have lived in NY for several years and I'm now currently getting my post grad at Columbia University, and have never had an experience quite like this. I should have read earlier reviews of this place as this seems to be a trend, especially with black women. The manager always seems to blame the victim when race is brought up instead of examining where him and his staff could be going wrong, and possibly check their biases. An appropriate response would be that they don't tolerate racism in any form at their establishment and that they would look into it, but I doubt thats whats going to happen. Instead they are likely to label me an angry black woman, as he has done in other responses. As a recap; The staff are rude at all levels and treat you according to their biases and racial misconceptions. It's sad to see this play out so blatantly in their interactions with black patrons, while there and in the comments and review section. Again, if you are black, don't bother attending unless you would like to receive an overpriced below average meal with a side a racism. read more

Went here tonight after leaving my job at a law firm. I ride my bike to work for my health and the environment. I was in shorts, tshirt and sandals and waited in line after locking my bike up to meet friends for a reunion [40 people RSVP'd)] for the event. When I got to the head of the line to be waved in I was asked if I had anything else to wear. Confused I answered no and waited as other people were shuttled in before me. Then the bouncer/doorman specifically asked me about my sandals and if I had something different to wear. I pointed out that there were women being allowed in with sandals so it didn't seem like the same rules applied across the genders. The bouncer/doorman then got hostile and told me he was trying to be nice but now I was being a dick. I laughed and turned to get back on my bike when he very specifically called me a "fag". I was stunned to hear this being thrown out. Completely floored that this happened in a NYC venue. My kids are gender and color blind as I have brought them up in this great city. To be subjected to this racism, hostility and homophobia is beyond bizarre in today's climate tolerance. She made our Saturday evening in February feel like a breeze up on that rooftop. So, why were we there? To celebrate my partner's stellar birthday, of course! THE EXPERIENCE WAS EMBARRASSING AND HUMILIATING!!! Don't waist your time comming here!!! I asked the "bouncer" if I, my sister and my brother-in-law needed to make a reservation to go in. He replied that was ok, we would need only pick up the line. When got our time to go up, appearded a guy and said for us that we couldn't go up and said that we needed a reservation. I told him that the bouncer said that We could go up, but wasn't whort it because He was very obnoxicus and extremely rude. I think it happened just because we were already holding our passaports and he saw that we are from overseas. I just wanna tell you little blond bouncer... Brazilian people is the most important tourist for this city nowadays. We spend more money here than any other people from other country here! I gave 3 stars because I didn't get to FULLY immerse myself here. The atmosphere is an upbeat lounge. Good music, room to bop and sway with a friend, or you can relax and chat away. There were three private parties going on that sectioned off most of the place when I went. That limited me to the bar, which is nice in itself. It also wasn't hard to be seen by the bartenders and actually get service. I buckled down and paid for my pricey calamari AND I DON'T REGRET IT. I'd throw my money at them for some more any day of the week. If you want a spot that you can chill at but still feel classy and get a snack, try this place. And talk to the hostess if getting a table is important. They'll try to help you out the best they can. It was raining when I went, but I don't think you get a good view of the empire state building. Just the lighted tip really. Go elsewhere for that. read more

What an awful doorman. The doorman at the refinery rooftop is a terrible person that treats their customers awful. The terrible experience started when the doorman tried flirting with my friend and I, when we did not flirt back he told us we need to be nicer to the guy who decides if we enter the venue. He then out of nowhere says to my friend that he likes Indian girls because they know how to take care of their men. She is Indian and found that to be a racist comment. The doorman came off like a total creep. When the rest of our party arrived he told us we had to care of him. He said we had to pay $20 each or we had to leave. When we refused to grease him he told us to have a nice trip back to New Jersey. Just an FYI how you will be treated by the doorman at this rooftop in midtown. This is a really nice rooftop bar with amazing views of the empire state building. They have a nicely decorated outdoor space from where you can get a great view while sipping on your drinks, as well as a cozy indoor space with a great little glass roof. The drinks here were well made and priced at standard NYC rooftop bar rates. The food was a revelation though, we got the sausage flatbread, fish tacos and the meatballs and all of them were delicious! You definitely wont feel like there isn't enough to nibble on here. It was moderately busy on a Thursday evening, mostly an after work crowd. They did close the rooftop a bit early though, which was a bit of a bummer. The time spent indoors was fine anyway and we wound up after one drink. I can see myself coming back here next summer. read more

First of all, I have to say that this is a really nice venue. Nice atmosphere and vibes. HOWEVER, THEY HAVE VERY NASTY BOUNCERS! My friend and I were going to a private event and apparently we were on the list. The bouncer gave us such a hard time and especially gave my friend this EXTREMELY DISGUSTING DISCRIMINATING ATTITUDE just because of her race! It was very disrespectful and unprofessional. Totally ruined our mood before we get in. This is definitely my new favorite spot in NYC. There are exquisite views of the Empire State building and it has a very loungy laid-back feel with outdoor cushy seats and wooden swings. The drinks are super tasty, very summer refreshing with an array of interesting fruit and flavors in them. The inside of the bar has a very rustic feel with a water feature, exposed wooden planks and a fireplace, makes you feel comfortable and right at home. Also, there is tons of natural lighting on the inside with the openness of the windows, just an overall neat experience and place. I recommended the Refinery to several professional colleagues as an after party spot following a Gala at Gotham Hall around the corner. While we were waiting for the elevator to go up "Jack" the manager comes from out of nowhere and starts trying to square up against the man in our party. Jack then resorts to yelling racial epithets and being physically menacing and my party retreat out to the street. Jack comes outside, jumps in a vehicle at the end of the block with several other men inside, pulls up in front of the entrance and proceeds to watch us until we leave. I had booked my rooms for my bachelorette weekend at the Refinery Hotel. I had eaten at the downstairs restaurant and been for drinks in the Jazz lounge and knew the rooftop would be great. When I got in touch with the rooftop staff they told me it would be $100 minimum spend per person even though I wanted to make a reservation for some early food and snacks for around 7pm, nowhere near the busiest time of night for this rooftop. When I checked back to book, I was ignored. I canceled my hotel reservations and am now staying at the W Union Square for my bachelorette. Been here a few times before but went again last week and fell in love all over again. This place is awesome. The ambiance and decor is just beautiful. It's modern yet cozy and chic. Between the brick walls, glass ceilings, lighting and amazing view, this rooftop bar is definitely worth checking out. The music is great, the staff is super friendly and the drinks - delicious. Came to New York and ended up in this amazing rooftop bar!! Amazing view of the Empire State Building!! Very polite staff, if you are lucky you will get to deal with Allison behind the bar!! They later talked to the manager, who claimed they reviewed camera footage and said we "drank" the drinks. After pushing back, they agreed to refund two of the incorrectly charged mocktails. Mixing up alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks isn't a small mistake, and the staff was rude and unprofessional.

Service was good and they checked up on us once in a while, which was good since we were isolated a bit from the main area. We were celebrating a bachelorette so we also got limoncello shots that definitely pushed us over the edge after our cocktails. Overall it was a nice place to sit back for a bit. It definitely has a more dark and moody ambiance but with a touch of whimsy to it. Love the unique cocktails that they have and I would recommend it to anyone in the area to check out!
