Sales help is OK - you need to flag one down - but of course they are battling an avalanche of garments threatening to topple overfilled racks. REI is suffering a similar demise of retail chains the world over; mostly, the sales help refers to a better shopping experience and better selection on line. For serious trekkers in search of quality merchandise from Europe - go to Adventure16 in West LA. REI just falls flat. read more

Not very impressed with the customer service - I spent 30 minutes checking out backpacks, but no one said "Hello", much less "How can I help you?" - even the employee *in the backpack department* fiddling with baby-carriers. At my 'home' store in Illinois, there are always employees roaming around asking if one needs help. One of my new happy places - whenever I come, I want to buy the place. After not having been to this location ever, I've been at least three times in the past month and have left impressed each time. I was in a couple weeks ago to get a jacket in preparation for a winter camping trip as well as a Mammoth trip around the New Year. I was helped by a young lady who talked me through the differences between an REI brand jacket vs. a Patagonia one. Despite taking phone calls and helping others, she was very knowledgeable and never pushy. I went in again not that much after that to do some holiday shopping and was greeted with smiles by many employees asking me if I needed help. I was last in there to drop off some snowboards to get serviced - had a good convo with the shop guy there about his recent snow trips before leaving my boards. The repair work was a bit pricey, but we did get $20 off each service for being Co-Op members - quite a deal. They have a 48-hour turnaround for the work they did and after picking them up I was pleased with the quality of work done. We've been Co-Op members for a while now and it's nice to know that it's been worth it for us to be part of the REI community. The discounts and other perks aside, it's cool to support a shop with a (seemingly) genuine commitment to the outdoors and the environment. As to some of the negative reviews out there, I feel like in any huge shop, you're going to run into some people that don't know what they're doing or talking about - I mean, the hiring process is never a perfect one and some less than adept folks will get through. REI is REI. I thought their selection of, well, everything was lighter than other REIs. The main concern is the parking. There are dedicated REI spots but they're typically full even on a Monday night. There's valet parking and paid parking too. Unfortunately, this is the valley and so you're competing with drivers from the multitude of surrounding mega franchises and restaurants. Might as well go to Northridge. read more

Wow. I've been in probably 10 REI's. Some are better than others. This is not one of the better of them. Walk in and customer service is all over you like a Walmart greeters, but like Walmart, once you get past the front door the service is nowhere to be found. One experience in particular really peeved me. I had picked up a bag of clothes and was waiting to try on some shoes, which these days requires waiting in a line. I waited 20 minutes for the 2 sales people to work with 4 customers. The store was closing in 10 minutes and still waited while one of the sales associates was whispering in what was a 10 minute personal humorous conversation with friends who happened to come by to say hi. In the end, that same associate unapologetically and coldly informed me that the store was closing and that he didn't have time to help. read more

What's the point of having a store that sells really expensive bikes and bike gear and then have zero security for your bike rack outside? I just bought sixty dollars worth of LED lights from here and when me and my daughter rode up today to eat, all our new lights were stolen. Walked thru the entire mall and found zero security and finally had to ask valet to find them. There was a group of people just congregating around the racks doing who knows what. Is this the best REI ever? No. Is it the worst? No. As far as REIs go, this one is pretty good. I've been an REI member for over two decades. I buy most of my gear here and will continue to do so. However, since their online store really took off the products they carry don't seem as deep or broad. And customer service has been inconsistent. This last time was decent; the time before that it was very good; the time before that good; and before that, nonexistent. Part-timers? Change in culture? I don't know but the inconsistency gives me pause. I'll keep coming no doubt. Nothing beats REI for outdoor products and gear geared toward outdoor recreation. But some days will be good ones and some days less than good. Don't go expecting stellar service, but know their products are still the best around. I wanna start off by saying I rarely ever make any returns at any store but I had a few items I didn't need from REI so this was a rare occasion. I see the cashier and immediately in a very derogatory way is questioning my motive? I told him I just didn't need this stuff but under his breathe was saying some crap rolling his eyes and he seemed VERY irritated. I get it I had like 5 items Im returning for store credit and I specifically told him "bro if you can't do it don't do it not a big deal" but he went ahead still huffing and puffing. Another terrific REI store. It's spacious, organized, clean and has many friendly and helpful employees. There's two well stocked floors. All the outdoor gear imaginable is downstairs along with tons of great quality clothes/shoes upstairs. My wife and I shop at REI a good amount of time when in need of hiking and camping items. I have purchased a few other casual wear clothing items which are high quality but usually find a discount as much of these items are quite expensive. Good solid brand names plus their own brand of items too. One thing I really like is the quality of customer service and expertise in every store. After searching all through the mall for an hour I gave up and came to REI to find the shoes I was looking for, and they had them !! Several styles. I came in today in hopes of exchanging some recently purchased items. When I was directed to the associate who could help me, she was clueless. I asked her some basic questions i.e. Do they make this backpack in a smaller size? She looked at me like I asked her to explain the "theory of relativity". Superb bike service! Brought in my specialty bike (which I'd bought elsewhere) for a look-over and possible repair. The bike has a NuVinci N360 Continuously Variable Transmission in in the back. /Both/ of the /two/ push-pull shifter cables for this CVT needed replacement because, well, I messed up at shifting, having somehow pulled out two cable anchorages, one each at opposite ends of opposite cables! DIY? Well, according to the CVT maker, one cable end must be exactly 117 millimeters from from its cable housing exit while three other pieces are in the exact rotational or linear positions specified somewhere else amongst /the/ five videos on the 'net showing how it's done... a daunting job. No way can I fix these cables: They need not just replacement, but likely special parts and crimping tools. The friendly people in the bike department were willing and confident about giving this challenge a good run. Turns out they were fully able to do this precise and demanding job, bringing back to life a bike I thought I might never ride again. Thank you good people at REI Woodland Hills!! read more

I was just window shopping at this point. I then explained to her the problems I was having with my shoes and she helped me find another set. She measured them and helped me try on several different pairs after finding a perfect set. I strongly recommend in dealing with this person if you do go there. Worst customer service ever!!!! I would give a 0 if I could. I waited 20 minutes for assistance. No one even approached me. I was shopping for spinning shoes. I knew exactly the pair I wanted. I just needed an associate to get my size so I could purchase. I walked to the front the cashier ignored me. I approached him and said he would send someone to assist me. An associate came five minutes later and said someone will be with you. Then another associate can and said sorry we are busy, maybe you should get a job here. I really did not understand that comment. After that I decided leave. I will purchase the shoes online. I will have to purchase two different sizes since I was not able to see what size I am. With so many sporting good stores closing, I'm glad there's an REI in the West Valley. They carry so much high-end gear and hard to find specialty items. I found most of my camping gear here that enjoyed this past summer. The staff is super friendly and they seem to share the same passion for the outdoors. Their prices are on the higher side, but the quality and manufacturers that they carry warrant the higher prices. I'm going to make climbing more of a priority in 2018 and I'll be sure to stock up on more gear at REI. read more

I hate to do this but Jesus. No one has a clue of what they are selling in this store. They couldn't even help me find a warm jacket. I asked for very warm gloves that were water proof, they told me that water proof and water resistant is the same thing .... I am no expert in cold clothes and stuff, but I know that is not correct. I went to this location to finally buy some good shoes for an upcoming trip. I worked with Michelle, who, for almost 2 hours, ran me through my numerous options, patiently brought out almost every shoe on the wall, and explained, with a pretty deep well of knowledge, what I needed to know. I ended up with a great pair of shoes that I really believe will see me through and couldn't be more pleased with my experience. I also found a really great jacket for the trip and stayed in my budget. Really excited to break all of it in.
