Two days beforehand, we had to cancel my husband's ticket due to sickness and the day of, we had to cancel my ticket due to a sudden family emergency. I found this store to be very friendly with excellent customer service. The folks in the shoe department were very patient and helped me find exactly what I was looking for. There are some complaints about parking, but those would all be in error, due to an enormous parking garage behind the store. I imagine if you are visiting REI a 3 minute walk shouldn't be a problem. REI of Woodland Hills, what happened??? First, the place has a clunky layout with items awkwardly displayed where to my detriment it became an apparently even more awkward issue as I looked for my pant size behind a display close to a wall and a worker came over with what I regarded to be an overly suspicious stance saying "do you need some help back here" as if I was doing something! Okay, let it pass, maybe it did appear like something off was going on as I was looking for my correct size of pants in their ill-positioned display. It gets better! I found my pants and proceeded to the checkout and as the person was ringing my order they felt that there was something in one of the zip pockets and asked if I put something in there? Excuse me, why would I do that? Checking further they proceeded to pull out some product packaging from an item that appeared to have been removed by another unsavory customer and the unwanted packaging concealed in the pant pockets of the one's I was unlucky enough to select. Once I saw them pull it out and was still meant with a suspicious look, I added, "yes I actually have an obsession with discarded packaging and had to have it, my bad" - no laugh from cashier and only enhanced suspicion. "Do shoplifters actually go up and pay for a $100 pair of pants and have an active membership with the store they are stealing from?" should have been my retort, but I was so thrown off by the encounter that I walked out with the thought that the time of actually visiting stores may be over for me and the ease online shopping cuts out all the negatives plus saves a lot of time! read more

Gerard is extremely knowledgeable and helpful - he's a guide for the Sierra club and knew more about gear from his own practical experience than anyone else we've met in store. He only works sundays though so if you really need help he's your guy! read more

Very happy with pack fitting and help here. Knowledgeable associates and easy purchase. I do wish they had more color variety in sizes for women's packs but I suppose a minor complaint. They also held our purchases for us while we shopped, which was nice. read more

I've loved REI my entire life. It's a great store. My only real issue happened after purchasing a mountain bike at REI in Woodland Hills. The staff basically forgot to tighten every joint on the bike. I'm new to mountain biking, and really didn't think to check - I'd rather trust the experts. The pedal came off when I was going up hill. The tires consistently leaked. The crank developed a pretty loud clunk. When i took the bike to REI in Santa Barbara, they found and fixed everything for me - they were awesome. It was an oversight on the part of the Woodland Hills staff, but I will never trust the cycle staff at the Woodland Hills location again. read more

Walked in here a couple of times and was even here in their grand opening and scored water bottle and $25 gift cards hehe. Fast forward to almost 2 years, walked in here bought a sale item cycling helmet since I just started the sport. Staff were courteous and knows their stuff. Wide selection of outdoor and indoor recreational stuff. They also hold classes for outdoor activities which is cool for the avid outdoor person. Glad there's one close to my neighborhood. read more

Came in with no idea what backpack I need/want to a month-long trip to Asia and this awesome sales associate, Cali, was so happy to help. She was a tiny girl herself, but was glad pull a ton of different brands and styles of backpacks for me to find my perfect fit. I had no idea what i was even looking for and what a 'good fit' was supposed to feel like, but she took the time to help me out and explain all the details. There's no way i would have been able to figure out all of the straps and adjustments of the backpacks on my own lol And she filled, unfilled, and refilled, a ton of backpacks with weights for me to try out, which was awesome. Cali was so patient and helpful with everything and it was a really positive shopping experience overall :) sorry about the mess we accumulated!!! read more

I managed to strip out the pedal threads on BOTH crank arms for my NordicTrack because I didn't get them on all the way. I found a process online for "refreshing" the threads by boring them out, then installing a threaded insert to bring the new opening back down to 9/16" and ready to accept a pedal. But the process was arcane (at least to me) and messing it up would mean rendering irreplaceable cranks, and therefore a $2k exercise bike, inoperable. So I took the cranks to a bunch of bike shops in the west valley and no one would touch them. They didn't know the process or didn't have the tools, etc. Finally one of them recommended REI. I was doubtful but out of options, so I tried them. Sure enough, their master wrench Lane (sp?) knew exactly what needed to be done. A few days after dropping them off, I got my cranks back and Lane had done an absolutely perfect job. My pedals went on without a problem and the inserts were as solid as the original threads (if not more so). I've been a member of REI for maybe 20 years now and never had a bad experience at any of their stores, but this one stands out. Lane was able to do what no one else would even attempt. He's a dying breed, at true craftsman. read more

Yes, the store is beautiful, but the lack of customer service is ridiculous. I bought a few items and 2 of the items didn't fit. The tags were attached however I couldn't find the receipt, I made theses purchase on my debit card so assumed they could just look up the transaction, especially considering they are a high end store and your paying a premium. I was wrong. They didn't even ask me why I wanted to make the return, they don't care. 2 separate employees tried to push a club membership of $20 a year so my future purchases would be protected. Even stores such as target can easily look up a transaction from a card purchase. I would never buy anything from this store, customer service is lacking. read more

I wonder what the fuss is all about making REI look really bad. I read some of the most shockingly bad reviews and I will defend REI's reputation to say the least. First of all, REI's merchandise is geared towards the average outdoorsperson. Yes, there are some items that they do not carry such as firearms. However the average outdoorsperson does not hunt. I will also defend that their customer service is excellent. I am definitely an REI member as the perks are that you get a 10% cash-back dividend annually on all items purchase. All of their employees are experts in their field. I have been and always will be a loyal customer! read more

I've only been to REI a few times before today. As I'm not into camping, hiking and other outdoor activities, I usually shop at REI for other people. I know that they are known for their great selection, excellent quality as well they stand behind everything they sell. Today I stopped at the new REI in Woodland Hills. The exterior (and of course, the interior) is beautiful. Salespeople on the second floor were very helpful I had trouble getting help on the first floor, so I ended up buying a little less than I might have. The cashiers are very helpful, too. Why am I giving the store only 4 stars? There is very little free parking! Evidently REI has a few spaces for their customers but if the spaces are taken, as they were today, your choice is to pay $10.00 for valet parking or park quite a distance away (My estimate is it would take at least 20 minutes to find a space in the parking structure and then walk back to the store. I will not return to this store or any others in the Village. I can go shopping in Beverly Hills, at much more expensive stores and they will validate my parking. I hate to say it, but Saks 5th Avenue validates your parking and they don't change extra for valet parking. The parking issue should probably be directed to the property management company, but I think the store management should know that although I like being able to see and touch things before buying, I'll go to other stores or just buy online. I wasted $10.00 today and I'd rather get something for my money other than feel like I was ripped off. I'll not be returning to this mall. read more

Great store and location. Much friendlier and attentive than the Northridge location. They also have a wider range of items, at least for hydration backpacks. I will be back and will definitely purchase in the future, which is why I didn't mind getting my returned item refunded in merchandise credit, even though I paid cash. read more

Although the price is a bit on the high end, REI offers the best quality products any outdoor retailers can offer. They also have the best 1 year return/exchange policy. If you don't like it because of the color, size, fitting, whatever it is, you can return or exchange it within one year of your purchase. This store is such a perfect location for those who go rock climbing because it's near Stoney Point. They have tons of rock climbing gear, shoes, and personnel who are knowledgeable to climbing. Become a member for only $20! That $20 gets you a lifetime membership, awesome deals online, dividend by the end of the year for every full price items you've purchased, access to used gear sale every month, discounted price for travels and classes! I guess what I'm saying is that the price is worth it. You get great customer service, quality products, and you get 10% of your total full price purchased items by the end of the year! So that $20 to sign up...you won't even remember it once you receive your dividend letter :) read more

I came here to check out ski boots since the Devonshire location does not carry ski equipment. Anyways I had no problem with the store.. Was big n had alot of stuff.. We bought a few items for our daughter which were on sale.. I'm giving this place 3 stars because the parking situation sucks! It's a small parking lot to begin with and half of it is for valet! Ridiculous.. Whoever designed the parking should be fired.. Too much of a hassle to come down here and struggle to find a parking spot. I will pass! read more

Bike and ski shop is phenomenal. I've been a big fan of this store in general since it opened a few years back and it keeps getting better. Rick and the guys in the shop took great care of us with our skis last year, and have exceed themselves with our bikes this year. I've used some local bike shops that charge almost double for the various tune ups and got no where near the personalized service Rick puts into each bike. We're REI members so get the member rate, but even their non-member rate is better than any local shop in the area. Keep up the great work. read more

The staff is amazing and helpful here, I was so blown away! I normally buy everything on amazon but coming here I realized there is a huge benefit of customer service. I was looking to buy a good backpack for a hiking trip and the staff was really helpful in getting me fit for a backpack. When i got to the counter to pay, I was going to buy a camelback but the guy at the counter was explaining its not the best and took me over to the other water bottle area when he did not need to and helped me find a much better fit. Everyone was really helpful and this store is huge and with lots of great options for any outdoor activity. Great place! parking kind of sucks because its not free which is pretty stupid. read more

Friendly staff but not readily available to help us in ski gear area (had to go to checkout to ask questions and no one offered to help us) After purchasing a few ski items I had to order the ski pants I needed in store. David helped me, and although friendly, he got the order wrong not once, but three times. I then spent 2 hours on the phone on 2 separate occasions with cust servs trying to fix his errors (wrong size, wrong colour, wrong email address, wrong shipping time - this was the biggie for me - I needed next day which he did on the original but not the new so getting it standard would have meant they wouldn't have arrived in time for my trip!) Overall, much better experience on the phone with main Cust Servs than in store. read more

Second time I've been to REI but never bought anything until today. I came in to get a duffle bag for a trip. I didn't see the one I saw online in the racks but James went out of his way and looked for the bag I was looking for in the back warehouse. I almost didn't asked because most retailers would just say "everything is out" with out checking and I understand in most cases that is the reality. I greatly appreciate him taking the time and finding it for me. The cashier was really friendly and she informed me about the membership and sounded great. REI seems like a great retailer and I'm sure I will be returning. read more

I made the mistake of coming in during typical lunch hours for retail employees. So did all of Woodland Hills apparently because the shoe department was packed and the poor employees that were working were swamped. I waited patiently and finally got helped but they didn't have the shoe I'd come for so on my way out I asked a guy how the sizing worked so I could gauge my size and buy online. I have to say I'm glad I waited longer than I intended because a super knowledgeable employee named Sam came back from break and helped me find exactly what I needed. He was an excellent salesperson and took the time to help me find the right shoe that would solve the problems I was having with my current hiking boots. He obviously knew the products and clearly was an avid hiker. I felt like I was in good hands. It's always amazing when one employee is able to turn a crummy experience into an excellent one. I am a REI member and shop there more often than I should. I was happy the new REI opened in Woodland Hills close to my neighborhood. Unfortunately I am to the point where I think twice about entering. What manager instructed the employees to constantly ask you "are you alright?", "can I help you with anything", "can I help you find something"? I understand the pleasant, helpful nature of the store but sometimes I can't make it from one aisle to the next with out being asked if I need help. How about this, there seems to be an abundance of employees roaming the floor with almost nothing to do. If I need help I will ask. If we share eye contact, smile, nod, that's enough. The place is Stepford creepy. read more
