I did a terrible thing this weekend: I introduced my mother to REI. Let me make one thing clear: we have never been, nor will we ever be, a camping family. My mother and father are 5-star hotels all the way. So why were we even near an REI? Clothing and shoes. I know. Such a female thing. But with an impending winter trip to Asia, where we'll be battling the bitter cold and wind, my mother wanted to buy a new pair of warm, comfortable boots, so off to REI we went in search of some Sorels. When we arrived, my mother almost fainted from the sheer size of the store, because she'd never seen a place so dedicated to outdoor things (she later told me she was expecting a crappy Big 5-type place). By the time we made it through the camping section, where she marveled at all the canteens, cookware, and dinnerware, she decided she wanted some new lightweight but warm down jackets as well. While we were trying on some coats, an employee approached us and asked whether we knew about their membership-type program. We said no, and she explained a bit about it, how we would pay $20 to join, and we would get 10% cash back each year, along with 25% off a single REI-brand item that day. We thanked her, then kept browsing. After choosing a coat, we went on to look at the shoes. I was really disappointed to see that they only had 2 Sorel boots that were for cold weather, and they frankly were hideous in color. My mom ended up with a pair of Born booties, a pair of Sorels, and a pair of Columbia booties, and I left with just one jacket. It wasn't until checkout, where my mom was paying for her items at the next register, and Husband and I were paying for our two coats separately that we felt extremely pressured by the cashiers to join their "membership" program. I heard my mom just tell the guy that she didn't live there, and he asked her where she lived, to which she responded, "Taiwan." On our end, the girl who was helping us asked us if we were a part of the program, and we said no. She asked if we wanted to join, and we said no, since we just wanted to get out of there and continue with our errands. She kept telling us about the benefits, how much we would be saving, yadda yadda, and my husband kept saying that we really don't shop there that much. Oh, and she didn't stop there. She said things like, "You're crazy! You're already getting your money back and more by just joining today!" And so on and so forth, until my very even-tempered, patient husband was ready to just walk out of the store empty-handed. This girl even took on a bitchy attitude after our numerous declines. When we were set to pay, she was like, well you COULD'VE been paying X amount, but instead you're paying Y amount. THANKS, GENIUS. I HAVE A GRADUATE DEGREE, I CAN DO THE MATH. We really felt so disrespected by this girl (too bad I didn't catch her name, but I can always look on the receipt I guess) - she was SO pushy, and just did not drop the subject. We literally almost just told her to forget about our entire purchase, because at least when we buy online, we don't have to be HARASSED by their employees to join a stupid program. This REI was clean and had a pretty good selection of stuff, so it was totally a 4-star experience for us (1 star off for their really small winter/rain-boot/shoe collection), but I have to drop them down to 2 stars just for the sheer "customer service" we received. Thanks but no thanks, I will not be returning to this REI - instead, I will buy everything I need at another store, or just online. read more

My husband wanted to buy a particular Casio watch and at another location we were told that the Tustin store has two, so we drove for 30 minutes to visit the store today. We waited for someone to assist us for 10 minutes and I finally went to ask the person around the cashier area to send someone. A sales associate showed up soon after that, but he was no help. He couldn't answer any of the questions my husband asked and kept saying that he didn't know anything about the watch. He even said that the watch would come with a manual and we could read it! We left the store without buying one. We usually have only good experiences at REI and that's why we have membership. I checked out the sale section and found something that I quite liked so, naturally, I got it. This is an REI. It stocks a lot of outdoor gear. However, unlike other REI stores, the staff here is pretty horrible. The customer service is sub-par. Recently, I went there to buy a pair of hiking boots. The pair of boots I always get wasn't in stock, and they don't carry it anymore. I had to special order the boots. That's fine, but, I should have just gone online at this point. A sales associate from footwear took me to the customer service desk and had me fill out some paperwork, verified that Merrell had the boots, and had me pay with my dividend. Fine. Fast-forward two weeks later. I got a call about my boots, I returned the call, expecting them to be ready to pick up. 2 weeks is about how long it takes to get something these days. Nope. The REI employee was calling to inform me that they hadn't ordered them yet because I hadn't paid. Apparently, the original associate hadn't calculated the price correctly and had under-charged me. I gave her my credit card info, and they charged me the $1.42 difference. Less than 2 bucks held up my order for 2 weeks. No, not processing my order for 2 weeks held up my order for 2 weeks. The miscalculation came from the original employee not adding shipping. So, buy from REI, get charged shipping, buy from anyone else ever, shipping is free. About a month later, I finally get the call to pick up my shoes. At this point, it has taken 45 days to get a pair of shoes. This is horrible. I go in to pick up the shoes and walk up to the "Customer Service" counter where an employee is standing doing something else. He doesn't acknowledge my presence. After a few moments of silence, I tell him I'm there to pick up a pair of shoes. He says, "Ok, I can't help you right now, I have to finish this." I'm sorry, I didn't know I had walked up to the re-tagging merchandise counter, I thought this was the customer service counter. I worked in retail for a time, and on day one they told me that I should engage customers. They didn't let me dick around at the registers fixing merchandise, that stuff happened in the back. If I was on the floor, or at a damn register, my job was to help customers. Apparently, the management at REI Tustin hasn't told their employees about that little gem of customer service basics. read more

I ve called this place a few times and got great customer service every time. I m a local Real Estate Professional in Orange County and have seen glimpses of the hidden trails laying between and behind our beautiful County. With gyms closed due to covid 19 I was looking for different ways to work out and came up with mountain biking. I was recomended REI was the place to go because of their customer satisfaction. My client was right. I bought a ghost bike after the 4th 12 mile ride got a flat tire. Called REI Tustin spoke to Jacqueline and she asked me to drop off the bike and it will be ready the following day. I dropped off the bike and within 5 minutes of leaving she called me back and said your bike will be done in 10 minutes if you d like to stay local. It was done within 20 mins of dropping it off. In a mad dash (the day after Christmas) as my daughter was leaving for a ski trip, I visited the Tustin REI because the Rancho Cucamonga REI didn't include the bindings and in a shopping frenzy I overlooked it. The Tustin shop was already packed as they first opened but I was immediately able to find an associate, Matt, whom was super patient, friendly, and problem-solving. He devoted his time to finding the appropriate bindings despite the whirlwind going on in the store. He placed several calls on my behalf and even loaded up my cart for me! read more

When is the optimal time to take break from work? Well there inst any. In my line of work you just have to make it happen. Even when all hec is breaking loose and change is imminent sometimes you just need to make it happen. As Wednesday December 23rd came to a close, I was successful in securing a new piece of business that helped close out of one of my best years ever. So to celebrate I am rewarding myself with a vacation. I had packed what I thought I would need, but as always there are always those odds and ends that you forget. A water proof map, compass and a supply water purifiers were among those missing items. I am not the biggest fan of REI, but am grateful that they exist and are available for those last minute items that I need for my trip tomorrow. I would specifically like to thank Jaime for her help and added insight on what to do and how to do it once I arrive. I learned more from her in 20 minutes from her than all my research on the Internet and any guidebook. After my last experience, I've given up on the Tustin location. The last three times I've been there, the service has been lacking. You used to have to shoo away sales people and now when I need help there is no one to be found, and when I do find someone, they pass me off to someone else who is equally not enthused to assist. This time I came into pick up my backpack. When I asked for assistance to be properly fitted, I was passed off to two different people. The last person said she would "eyeball" the torso adjustment and that was it. No packing the bag with weight; I put the bag on and she disappeared. My friend has had the same experience and said he has had better luck at the HB location. You pay a premium at REI for quality and service, and when the service is lacking, the premium price just leaves a bad taste in my mouth. I'm really disappointed. read more

What happened to REI? They charge premium prices but always had a great return policy. As you may already know, they overhauled that policy. Now, if they have the slightest hint that you will return something if you don't like it, they will lecture and belittle you about how you are abusing the policy. They are just ridiculous. The lady at the front who seemed to be the head cashier or manager was beyond rude. I was disgusted with their behavior, as were other customers around me. So the great return policy is gone, even though satisfaction is supposed to still be guaranteed. However, they still charge premium prices. What's the point? I keep forgetting to check in when I come to REI. I totally love this store. If I had unlimited disposable income, I would take one of just about everything. So much cool stuff and a helpful and knowledgeable staff. The 10% customer dividend is also a really nice perk. I had been to the old store along the 55 fwy. Not much to recommend it. It was cramped and crowded. The new store is fabulous. There is a big selection of a lot of clothing, shoes, active sports equipment, and whatever other outdoorsey stuff you can imagine. As my boys have gotten older, we have been biking more. My wife and I bought new bikes in February. I needed to get a car rack. I came to REI because I got the best deal here. I bought a Thule hitch rack. I had done a lot of research and narrowed it down to either the Thule or a Yakima rack. I wanted to check them out in person, so I went to REI. The staff person helping me suggested I go out and check the Thule rack on the back of his Explorer. It worked great. I am very pleased with the purchase. My wife bought some shoes at REI. We discovered that the returns policy is fantastic, even on shoes. We exchanged for a different size, no questions asked. Winter wear, rain gear, shorts, socks, you name it, they got it if it is meant to be worn outside. I recently purchased another bike for myself here because the one I previously bought is not exactly what I wanted. The staff person I asked about the bike initially went to the back and found the bike in a box. He put it on the bike shop build list for me immediately. Again, great customer service. It seems like the staff wants you to have a good time with whatever you buy at REI. The only problem I have with REI is the prices. Sometimes they are out of control. I can't ever see myself paying $500 for a jacket, no matter how rain and wind resistant it purports to be. The customer dividend helps, and the sales are good, but I would like to see more reasonable pricing. Oh yeah, they also have special events where they have animals on display that the kids can pet as well as special activities for the young ones. This store is huge and full of all kinds of useful products for outdoor activities. My gf and I are going camping soon, so we came here to get some outdoor cutlery/dishware that was compact and durable. We ended up leaving with a nice set that holds enough for four people all in a container the size of a medium tupperware. The thing with REI is, they're pricey. If you're looking to buy outdoor gear it's going to come down to whether or not you want to spend money for top of the line. Since I'm only going camping locally (read: not exactly roughing it), then the selection at a Sport Chalet or Big 5 is a little more in line with my needs. Don't get me wrong, they've got some really killer product here. I just found that most was geared towards outdoor enthusiasts who want the best, and being a relative neophyte to camping I don't want to be "that guy" who buys all the best stuff before having a few trial runs. They do have a rewards program that costs $20 to buy into, but you get some good benefits from it. I can't recall what those were since I didn't sign up for it, but if this becomes a regular thing I probably will. I will say that out of all the outdoor shops I've been to, this was by far the largest, cleanest, and most stocked of any. read more

I'm a cyclist, so I mostly go to REI for cycling and sports nutrition items. Normally I try to give my business to mom & pop, family, and privately owned shops, and stay away from chain stores when I can, but REI is an exception for me. Unfortunately, elitism and snobbery is common in the world of cycling. Wether its being made fun of for petty fashion details, or being looked down on for lacking knowledge, or having cheap gear, there's just a lot of ugliness that you encounter, particularly in the specialty, high end road bike stores. When I go to REI i've consistently had customer service that was friendly, helpful, and free of attitude. I've even had long conversations with employees, which for a shy person like me, is rare. The employees are more like enthusiasts in outdoor hobbies, rather than salespeople trying to make a commission. So they will recommend products that they use and consider the best, rather than just try to upsell you on the most expensive item. Now because it's a store that stocks items for a wide variety of hobbies, their selection isn't as large as a store that's just for running, camping, or snowboarding, but that's okay. Their prices are still very competitive across the board. They offer discounts when buying things in quantity, and every once in a while they will do a sidewalk sale where they will have a parking lot full of returned, blemished, and discontinued items marked down to very low prices, and those draw pretty big crowds. I have also had repair and maintenance services done by them a handful of times for my road bike, and with every service I needed, I compared their estimates to 3 other bike shops, and they always came out to be the cheapest, and on top of that, their turnaround time was always the fastest. They also have some very helpful clinics and workshops. Some of them are even free. They have a good one that covers the basics of bicycles for people who are looking to get back into biking, that I recommend. Also, they have what might be the most liberal return policy out of any sporting goods store I know. You can basically return any product for any reason if you aren't satisfied. Even if it's opened, used, and you lost the receipt. I always have a good experience when I frequent this store, which is why I am a repeat customer. read more

My bike was a special order and delivered on time, as promised. However, dealing with the local shop was terrible. They were incredibly rude and irresponsible. I had to call four times in order to get an answer about pickup times. In two occasions, the guy at the bike shop told me he was "too busy" to look for it. Once, he even told me he couldn't be bothered to "go to the floor" to see if my bike was ready. Finally, I got my answer and drove more than an hour to pick it up (Raleigh bikes can only be delivered to certain shops). It turns out "the floor" was actually on the same floor as the bike shop, and perhaps 20ft away! You could even see most bikes from the customer service and bike counters. Anyway, I was so happy with my bike I did not mind them not even wanting to see if fit, or I needed any sort of adjustment. So I took it for a test at the parking lot. It was great. But the magic only lasted a minute or so. After pedalling for bit THE BACK WHEEL CAME OFF the dropouts! Luckily, I was not going too fast and managed to maintain control. I could not believe they left the back wheel loose. I took it back for a fix and even got replacement skewers. Needless to say, I am not taking it back to the shop even for the free tune-up. Oh, and I tried adding this review on their own website, but they keep deleting it. I guess they don't take feedback too seriously. read more

I skied on a pair of new Dalbello boots a few times and was always puzzled why one of my feet was alway cold and wet. It turned out that a silicone plug was deformed and the boots lacked a proper seal. I took the boots back to REI and showed the part to a sales person. He agreed that the deformed plug could cause a problem with keeping snow and water out of the boot. The boots were also missing a screw that secures the calf cuff. Plus one buckle always clipped in a little funky. Which eventually popped open and contributed to a hard fall and further deforming of the buckle. All I wanted was a new screw, a new silicone plug and a buckle replacement. REI does not service Dalbello boots and Dalbello does not have a domestic office to order replacement parts from. This fact left me high and dry. I asked about some help with either a manufacturer warranty or honoring my membership "100% satisfaction or refund for the price paid". I was accused of abusing the product and membership policy. They finally credited me the price paid, but told me that my membership would be noted not to honor any further warranty or membership claims. F-You REI and your membership guarantee. You proved that paying more does not give your customers better service and the membership is an empty benefit. I'll take my chances with Sport Chalet. read more

I purchased a REI brand tent from their online retail store. After two months of using it, the poles began to break in the middle. The reinforcement was so thin that the fasteners just fell off. Most of time during my trip the tent was inside my uncle's boat and I used a smaller bag to carry it for day trips. It broke during a camping trip, so I was basically sleeping in trash bags for the whole trip. I went to the store and was told that my item must have broke due to rough handling. The manager at the desk was pretty nasty to me and must have thought that I was one of those customers who "break and return" after one trip. If they saw my purchase history, they'd see that I've bought hundreds of dollars worth of items. Supposedly they are a first class company dedicated to achieving 100% customer satisfaction, but this is one customer that is now stuck with a broken tent, fixed with zip ties and who will be going to Turners or even Wal mart to buy more camping items. read more

Even during sales and holidays the staff ensure that they make the line move quickly and work to get you the best deal possible with dividends and coupons. Pros: - Wide selection - Solid seasonal rotation - Good sales/rewards program - Staff is helpful and not pushy Cons: - Ordering items in the store that we're out of stock at the store has been an issue twice with not being notified of the shipment arriving. The store layout is sensible and intuitive and much of the equipment is available to test right in the store. Yes, I am a fan boy, but I will also shop other retailers if the R.E.I price isn't reasonable. That being said, I rarely find something that is marked up so high that it's worth going to an online e shop, paying for shipping, and running the risk of an online return nightmare. read more

Went to REI this past weekend to exchange a pair of hiking shoes ordered online. I normally like to go in and out while shopping but this place actually encourages the customers to hangout and try on their gear for as long as you'd like! This makes sense, especially if you're getting some new hiking shoes and want to make sure that they are comfortable. Ernest assisted me in picking out the perfect hiking boots that were the correct size and fit for me. He spent time making sure that I was comfortable and even showed me how to properly tie them! The worst time to shop RCI is on Memorial Day weekend because they were having a big sale and everyone feeling sporty was there. Everyone. All I wanted was a pedometer. I looked at the display cases, nothing there. I asked the morose customer service person stationed near the front door and even though she directed me to an end cap past the tents, there were none. We purchased about $5000 there for out trip to Costa Rica and wanted to return 2 sons and a defective eye glass land yard but was denied by the manger (Dustin) as we did not have a receipt. But the charges were on my credit card but REI's policy, no receipt, nor being a non-member you are not entitled to a refund nor an hour exchange. I have utilized this store over 15 years as well as my daughters and their families. But after an attempted exchange of defective merchandise yesterday I SHALL NOT RETURN. You get what you pay for. And that statement rings very true at REI. Yes, they have some high prices, but you get quality products, and if not that, quality customer service. I bought a pair of Five Fingers (the shoes that look like foot gloves) about two years ago. Within those two years, I used them for working out and hiking (very good shoes for them too), which, admittedly, wasn't as much as often as I'd liked. About three months ago, the front plastic part of the shoe cracked and no doubt, I was a bit irritated. For a shoe that cost $100 and had been used less than often, I felt kind of cheated out of my money. I read on their site that they did repairs and was hoping to get mine fixed, so I went to customer service and instead was completely blown away. After explaining my story, not only were they quick to sympathize, they said that I was more than welcome to get a new pair, shipped to my door, at no extra cost! They even let me get a different size because I bought a size too big last time! 100% satisfaction guaranteed, and they really do mean it! Great sales and awesome XX% off coupons year round. First time visiting this place! I was avoiding this place since all of my friends constantly rave about it and I knew I would spend a fortune! Too late! I was like a kid in a candy store. I was in need of a pair of good workout shoes so I decided to try this place! I ended up leaving 2 hours later and spent $300! Thank you to Will who helped me to pick an awesome pair of trail and gym shoes as well as educate me on lacing my shoes properly. He was very patient with me and helped me to find the right fit. I love my Mizunos and North Face shoes! He also helped me to find good wool socks that are lightweight, yet padded to avoid blisters. That, along with my new-found membership for $20 and a couple bags of Bee Stinger energy chews = $300. At least the membership is for life and comes with a 10% annual dividend! I also love that they are a co-op and dedicated to supporting conservation nationwide. This place inspires me to be more active and adventurous! This is MY toy store! Every time I come here, I end up dropping a small fortune yet I never have any regrets when I leave the store. Main reason why I always go here if i cannot go online, their customer service and SUPER knowledgeable staff! I agree with Kimberly though, there is going to be mad competition when it comes to parking this holiday season (its located betwixt the Best Buy and the Toys R Us; probably the WORST place to be for holiday shopping.) love this place for all things outdoors. i even signed up for their $30 lifelong membership which has a lot of perks. they're getting 1 star knocked off because it's a hassle to order on line and although they do tell you to not go until they notify you. I don't understand why if you go to the store and offer to just pick your own items they can't just scan that your order is ready. Instead they'd want to cancel your order and tell you to purchase it in store. Other retailers I've been to will say if you find it we will just finish the order in our system. When you sign up to be a member it is $20. So I signed up and when you spend I think $100 you get a $20 "gift card" they said. So I got the $20 "gift card". I went in today to buy a helmet and went to use my gift card. Little did I know that this "gift card" is valid for only a month. Expired 2 days ago and they would not honor it. Absolutely ridiculous. The worst REI I have ever visited. Drove 35 minutes to pick-up a new water bottle, and upon arrival noticed 90% of the racks holding the water bottles were empty. Wandered about the store for 10 minutes looking for anybody to help to no avail. Finally I managed to find one employee--who appeared to be busy shopping for headlamp for himself--to ask for help, and immediately received a short and rude reply, "that's all we have!" Fantastic way to lose customers. Oh well, live and learn. I went out to the parking lot and ordered the bottle I was looking for from amazon on my phone; just have to wait two days. There is not anything that REI carries that can't be purchased somewhere else. How does a store of this size and inventory not manage to stock water bottles in the middle of August? read more

Came here to exchange snowboard boots for a bigger size. Your employee Glenn who was working in the boot section helped me out big time. Explained to me everything about how my boot should fit to how I should dry them after getting off the mountain. He was so knowledgeable. Best service I've had at a retail store like that. Ended up leaving with the same pair I brought in. He deserves a high five for sure and to be honest I always have a great experience in your store. Thank you Glenn! read more
