I almost let recent negative reviews scare me away from going to the Irvine store and go to Costa Mesa or Laguna Hills, but my recent experience proved that perception isn't always reality. From the moment my son, who's going into middle school, and I walked in, we were greeted right away and connected with Judy, our sales specialist. Our stay lasted about two hours, and Judy was amazingly attentive the entire time. She was so patient and detail-oriented, going back and forth to bring out ten to twelve different pairs of shoes for us to try on without ever frowning, even though there was no commission on our purchases. What really stood out was how she spoke directly to my son, making him feel truly involved in the process rather than just talking to us as parents. I've been having some foot issues, which seems to be some sort of rite of passage for your mid-thirties. A few people recommended a visit to Road Runner, and I'm so happy I listened. As soon as I walked in, someone checked me into their queue for an assessment. I think they give everyone a foot analysis, with no commitment to purchasing their inserts. While I waited, I browsed their shoe selection. I lean more toward Hokas and Aesics, but I was open to trying something new. The wait was about thirty minutes, so if you're looking for a quick shopping experience, this isn't for you. Go in knowing that you're going to wait, but I actually didn't mind this because I appreciated the one-on-one experience and all the info I received about my feet. Judy performed my foot analysis. She had me first walk on the treadmill and after I stepped on their fit finder machine. This machine provided information on foot length, width, arch height, alignment, heel width, and more. Judy reviewed all this info with me, and they also email it to you for free. I decided to purchase their insoles to see if they make a difference. So far so good, so I'm curious how they'll help in the long run. I have been wearing Hokas with a lot of cushion and I learned this was the wrong shoe for me because it could actually make my foot more unstable. Judy recommended a mid-range cushion for me. She was so patient with me. I must have tried on 6 different shoes and she paid attention to how they fit me and recommended sizing for me. I really appreciated her attention to detail and the time she spent with me. I signed up for the VIP family and ended up with some savings in the end. Super helpful staff, solid selection, a membership that isn't superfluous or prodigal, (in fact, it's beneficial), and a great phone customer service support. There might be a 5 - 15 wait when you come in to be connected one-on-one if you are trying on shoes, but once you do, the confidence you have walking out the door KNOWING you got the right pair for you is priceless and well worth the wait. Not to mention, all the running gear is less than half of what you would pay at Lulu or Vuori and just as good, if not better. They also sell Gels, vests, lights, glasses, insoles and other gear for running and and membership pricing makes it easy since its one of the few shops (Unlike On, for example) that allows you to return after a break in period. read more

I clearly set my boundary and said I was not interested as he kept pushing his personal vendetta to get some type of commission from me. I had to refuse three times as his condescending attitude kept making remarks. Saying "That's crazy that you would want to pay more". He was kind at first, but clearly it's not genuine and was just to money grab. I couldn't believe a worker at this establishment was trying to tell me how to handle my personal finances. Poor business model; there should be an option to not go through thr fit process and/or have an employee who helps customers who know what they want and don't have 1-2 hours to sit in the store waiting to be helped. My wife and I walked in to the store we wanted to buy a pair of shoes each and some inserts, we were browsing for about 15min. We tried on clothes walked the entire store, tried to make eye contact with anyone working. Mind you there were at least 5 maybe more employees working with maybe the same amount of customers. Most of the the employees were walking around and past us a few times and never once asked us if we needed any help or said to us they were busy but will help us as soon as possible. We got basically zero attention from the staff. Which is fine I guess not the best for customer service but ok. We helped ourselves then wanted to get a pair of inserts. So I finally had to stop a gentleman on his iPad and ask can we scan our own feet and pick the one it says and he said no you need assistance. Then he proceeded to ask have you signed the waitlist? And I replied what list there is no sign no one told us about it and we had been in the store for more then 15mins! I told him that and he said oh sorry. I asked how long will it be he looked and said idk the next person on the list has been waiting about 29min so maybe that. Then he Walked away. The store has a good selection of shoes and seems like they have the equipment to help you fit the proper shoe for you. Love you, Road Runner Sports! The best decision I made was to sign up for their VIP membership. Since then, I have already returned twice to purchase new shoes. The membership stacks points, and gives you extra discount on top of the membership discount. Family members are also allowed to use membership perks, so I took my husband in as well. One tip: DO give their orthotic insoles a try! I said "no" on my first visit, but absolutely love them now. They custom mold insoles to personally fit your feet. I always hated orthotics, but absolutely love them from Road Runner. I chose the plush kind, and they do not hurt your feet at all. I will likely be their number one customer LOL. I came to the Irvine location on 1/1/26. I drove 30 minutes to get to this store. Upon arrival, I walked inside and made my way to the shoes, where I was stopped by an employee who told me that I needed to check in. I felt like this was unusual, but whatever;I got in line. There was a couple in front of me checking in, so I waited. When it was my turn to check in, the employee looked at his tablet and then at his watch and began to tell me that they would not be able to help me because they close in an hour and there were parties ahead of me. I ended up calling corporate and placed an order through them over the phone and was given a great discount. This place needs to do a better job in customer service. I was ready to buy some shoes. Terrible service, waited 20 mins to get helped and finally when I did get assigned someone to assist, they couldn't care less about me. I felt rushed and the employee seemed like I was a waste of time to him. I would have purchased a pair of running shoes, but because the person who was assigned to me never came back to check back on me, I just left. I was holding a shoe to see if I can get my size to try on, every employee seen me and said nothing. Came here to buy two pairs of Hokas that I was looking at. I was unaware upon arrival that I wasn't going to be able to just buy the shoes. I had to go though this whole process. I waited for 30+ minutes to be greeted by someone only for them to tell me I had to do some measurement thing before I could buy the shoes that I already researched and knew what size I was. Jerrad at Road Runner Sports in Tustin was awesome!! I have been stopping at the Costa Mesa Store for 2 years because of their large selection. I became tired of sales reps just trying to sell me a pair of shoes, any pair of shoes, i.e., not trying to help me, just make a sale. This was not just one visit, that is culture at the Costa Mesa store. The last straw was I ordered a pair of shoes in my size and had to return to the store 3 times because they ORDERED THE WRONG SIZE 3 TIMES!! I was done after that. I decided to try the Tustin store and was very pleasantly surprised. I wear orthotics and have wide feet so it is difficult to find a shoe that fits. Jerrad was so knowledgable and took the time to understand what I needed. He recommended several shoes and helped me find an everyday shoe and a trail shoe that work. I recently bought my first, and last, pair of shoes at Road Runner. Why? 1) Long wait for service. 2) Long time-wasting process with a "high tec" contraption that gave the wrong size and recommended brands I knew wouldn't fit. 3) Limited stock of sizes (both in-store and online). 4) High prices. 5) No refund no-exchange policy. To be entitled to exchange you have to PAY for a "membership". I wouldn't have gone there in the first place but I had been given a Gift Certificate. I walk 6 miles a day, the walk includes hills, I go through a pair of shoes a couple times a year, so I'm well-versed in my shoe size and what brands will work for me (I have very low arches and need shoes with minimum arch support). So I arrive thinking I can go straight to the shoe I want and ask if they have it in my size. No! It's like the Waiting Room From Hell, tons of people waiting and waiting and waiting for a salesperson. And when a half hour later I get a salesperson do you think the process is nearly done? Not at all. I'm made to stand on a thing that supposedly measures my feet in a scientific manner. I know what size I wear, 14, and generally I need a Wide but with some shoes I can get away with a "D" width. And with some shoes I need to go up to 15. So imagine my dismay when the machine says I wear a 13 D, and also recommends brands that I know have far too high arch support. I play along and try on a pair of 13D. I say "these are too tight all around and they have too much arch support. I need flat shoes." She does the thing where she pushes around my toes and says "yes you'll need 14." Now I confront the issue of their limited selection of sizes. They only have one style of shoe in the whole shop that's flat enough for me, a New Balance, which is what I've been wearing for years for that very reason. But they only go up to 14, and don't carry Wide. I know that in New Balance I wear 14W. So I walk out with a pair that are a bit narrow for me, and there's no alternative, because they don't have Wide online in that shoe either. Now I've been walking with these shoes for a week now, they're mostly OK but I do have a blister because the left shoe oddly pinches in one spot. I would never have bought these had I had an alternative. read more

I asked one of the workers if they were busy, and their response was "Yeah we are extremely busy," as in they are not looking to help at all. They said I have to wait 45 minutes to just to get the sizes we need. We walked out and drove 20 minutes to Champs Sports to get the shoes we wanted faster AND with a lower price than the VIP price they quoted there. I had a VIP membership, but now I don't. Truly appreciated DJ for helping me out, gave me many recommendations but landed on the Saucony Ride 18. I LOVE THEM! Breaking them in around the house for tomorrow's Hyrox Practice Simulation. Saw that DJ was currently wearing them and they looked used (in a good way) which meant I'm choosing a great pair to start running. I have not purchased a pair of shoes since some time before the pandemic. I wanted to invest in a quality pair of shoes since I know I will be using it for a long time. I decided to go to Road Runner Sport at the Irvine Marketplace for their fitting service and quality shoes. I came by on a Tuesday and there was a brief wait. Then Natalie came by and helped me out. She asked me for the purpose of my visit and inquired about what purposes and qualities I was looking for in a pair of shoes. She was extremely professional and helpful. We entered their Perfect Fit Zone for the assessment. At first I walked barefoot on their treadmill and their software analyzed my step. Then we went over to another machine where it measured my feet and where I was putting pressure with both feet, then with each foot individually. Super neat. Natalie also fitted me for custom soles that molded specifically for my feet. A report was generated and I received a digital copy to my email too. It showed a few pair of shoes that were recommended based on my feet and what I was looking for. Then Natalie went and grabbed 4 pairs of shoes for me to try. I walked around in all of them. Tried them with or without the custom soles, and I could definitely tell the differences. I ended up purchases the most comfortable part of shoes with the recommended custom sole. It was definitely a splurge, but health comes first. Natalie was so professional and sweet. It made my shoe purchasing experience so much more enjoyable than usual. It felt like she had been doing it forever. I found out that she was a kinesiology major. No wonder why she was so knowledgeable with my feet-diagnosis. I got really lucky she was there when I came in. I would definitely come back here the next time I need a new pair of shoes. read more

My knees have been getting obliterated the past year or so and I couldn't figure out why given I thought I ordered the same setup (Hoka Gaviota with custom insoles from Steven) from when I came in 5 years ago. Luke dug around a bit and found out that my most recent purchases have been the wrong size (my fault for that) thus why the pain and lack of support. Honestly just go to Nordstrom. How is this place going to survive the recession? The worst customer service experience I've ever experienced. Honestly go to nordstrom, their return policy is more reliable and their sales people actually want to sale we walked in knowing exactly what shoe we wanted. We literally just wanted to try it on and if the sizes worked out perfectly we are ready to check out. Unfortunately however, the salesperson insisted we couldn't try on a single shoe unless we went through their gimmicky diagnostic consultation (and all sales people were busy so no one had the time to actually do the consult). We told him we would do that but we just did not have 30 extraminutes and we knew exactly what we wanted. We asked them should we just go to Nordstrom instead?, and they insisted that would be a better idea. So take their advice and just go to a different store that's going to actually take care of you. Nordstrom's return policy is better, other stores have better customer service, why deal with this? read more

I've been a platinum member for many many years now and just found out that you can NOT use both the rewards cash and the 10% discount at the same time. A bit of bait and switch from what the sales folks have been telling me. I.e., I just bought a pair of $165 asics and had $80 rewards. I only got 10% off of $165-$80 and not the $165 as I originally thought. This means I only got 5% off my shoes as a platinum member. I do see this as a fine print in the Roadrunner faq page so info is there if you really dig deep. So, in order for the $100 platinum fee to be worth it, you need to spend at least $700/year in shoes which is tough. Otherwise, amazon is cheaper. I'll have to revisit whether I want to continue as a platinum member. I do like the customer service and the 90 day guarantee though. read more

A good selection of entry level and mid level shoes, which is good for the casual and hobby joggers. Limited selection of race shoes. Service is the rough spot with this particular location. Once you "check in" they want your phone number. When I refused, they were taken aback. In my opinion nobody should be required to provide personal information to buy shoes. In the past, they also try to get you to buy into their membership program. I refused this as well. It's their business model, which is fine, but there is significant friction if you don't want to provide your name, phone number and refuse to join. In prior visits I was able to try on shoes and have purchased gels, clothing and shoes after getting through these hurdles. Today's visit was different. The salesperson said he was "required" to provide me a 7 minute fitting assessment before I would be allowed to try on shoes. When I refused the assessment, we ended up in a standoff. I have purchased 6 sets of running shoes this year. I run almost everyday, I know what I want and like. I should be able to decline an assessment. Frustrated, I left and will never come back. I was recommended Road Runner Sports by a family member because they told me about the selection of shoes that they have to offer. I have been on two separate occasions, once as a new customer and the second time returning shoes. The associates were so nice and recommended shoes based off of my fit test. My first purchase was a pair of really nice Hokas, but unfortunately they made my situation worse. I went back and spent more time trying on many pairs of shoes to find the right fit. Many times I am horrible at making decisions, but the associate was there to guide me through all of my selections. The one thing I appreciated was that you can try on as many shoes as you want and not feel rushed or pushed to buy shoes that aren't comfortable or that you don't like. Road Runner is hit & miss for me. I've purchased shoes here at least 4x. The last time a few months back I felt the attention and service was rushed. Today is Thursday and I walked in at 12:20. Because it's during the week they were not crazy busy and no more than 4 customers. The guy with the check in tablet had his back to the door so no greeting or check in for me. He was busy chatting with 2 women for a good 10 min that I saw. In the meantime I went to look at shoes, picking up 3 pairs taking a good look. Still NO ONE approached me with a welcome or to sign me in. Very dissappointing for anyone whether a VIP or not. Each time I have came to this roadrunner I am ignored for 10ish minutes before someone gets around to helping me. Workers at the cashier will take their time before they come on over to help, even after they are done helping guests they were with. I understand waiting, but someone at least greeting or telling me how long the wait will be is standard customer service. And then the girl who helped me was being passive aggressive with an attitude like I was inconveniencing her for needing to shop. Like I wish I didn't have to go through the workers to see if the shoes I need are in stock, it would be so much faster. Which by the way, they never have good color options. We waited more than half an hour and nobody asked us if we were helped and then somebody, white couple wearing designer stuff were assisted first before we did even though we were there first standing and waiting patiently for out turn. Came in to get some new running shoes for my surf city half marathon that's two weeks away! Thank you to kea for walking me through the shoe fitting process and taking the time to recommend me multiple running shoes to try on. He was pretty patient and friendly with me which i liked. The foot analysis is pretty cool and spot on. It was able to identify my problem areas like the soles of my feet. I like the fact they have treadmills here to really try them out. I ended up walking out with new asics, custom insoles, and running compression socks. Also loved they have standard black and white colors. Most running shoes have the wildest color schemes lol.
