Be-careful with buying membership at REI, it bought a membership and for some reason my email was written incorrectly. The dividends I was suppose to receive expired with no warning via email or mail received at my address. They claim emails were sent and now because of their government contract, they are unable to give me the dividends that they owe even when I spent 20 dollars on the membership. No budging with customer service membership department on the phone. Please beware of purchasing the membership. read more

I needed a replacement bite piece for my Camelbak and only noticed it a mere half hour before I was to meet folks for a hike! Yikes. So I ran (well, actually I drove, but with fierce intent) to REI in Tustin. They were open just in the nick of time for me to grab the $6 piece of necessary plastic and I was on time to my hike. Brilliant! Love the space, cleanliness, and easy of access to all their items. This is a go-to spot for all outdoor adventures! read more

This place is not 3 dollar signs. You get what you pay for. Buy nice or buy twice and with the warranty this place has on all their stuff (minus climbing gear), there is no excuse to go elsewhere for your outdoor needs. Minus a few specific sports gearings they have some of the best stuff around. Plenty of parking, but like all REI's the registers can get crowded and the co-op gear sale is a bit of a mess. Great space behind the store to test ride bikes. I really like the way this place is set up for customization and change. Some REI's are pretty stagnant in design and flair, this one is not even two stories. read more

Be careful when purchasing anything from their garage sale. I bought a Goal Zero Yeti 150 from their garage sale. The tag on the box said blown fuse but come to find out from Goal Zero themselves that the inverter was busted. So I called this store to see what they could do for me. REI wouldn't do anything even though they mislead me to believe the product only had a blown fuse. I understand all sales are final at the garage sale but why put a tag on it that is misleading to the consumers? read more

Although we cheaped out and went to Big 5 to actually buy some stuff for good, if we're ever looking to rent something for a day or the weekend, we're coming back. Came here yesterday and had a not so great experience, but came here again today and had a great experience. Maybe the trick is to get the guys to help you? So Husband and I are shopping for waterproof hiking pants for a trip, he gets to the store 20 minutes before me and was being helped by a woman before I got there. As he and I were in the middle of a conversation we are interrupted by the girl, no big deal, if it weren't for the fact that she totally interrupted me talking but never once asked me if I needed any help even after I mentioned that I was going to look for the same thing and after running to her in the same section multiple times. I didn't get any proactive help from either her or two other female saleswomen. Today Husband and I go back to look for backpacks. Will helped us out, fitted Husband for 40 minutes trying on 2 different packs and going through how they are all different and why you might need one vs another. Totally schooling us. He was so great and helpful. We needed to run out but came back for a fitting for myself at the end of the day, Will helped us out for another 40 minutes getting me fitted for a pack, 3 different packs. So nice, so helpful. 3 women no help vs 1 very helpful guy. They need to reconsider the customer service there. Extra bonus is that they have a great warranty on their products, lifetime for the life of their product - sweet. Worth the extra $$ you pay since they are pretty pricey. Oh and they sell yummy hotdogs outside. read more

I feel guilty that I don't make full use of the store. I'm not an outdoors-y person--I'm more of what one might call "sedentary". Right, so I'm a sedentary person who really like North Face jackets, Smart Wool running socks, and reusable water bottles. One major reason and one minor reason why I don't bother doing my usual one to ten month search for cheaper online retailers: (A) Their 100% satisfaction guarantee is NO JOKE. They take everything back. My first time at the store, an employee gave an example of this: a man bought running shoes 16 years ago and decided to return them for an exchange. He had a receipt and REI took it back. I think the man complained that they were worn out. HAH. I returned snowboarding boots after wearing them once or twice because they were much too loose and uncomfortable to the Huntington Beach location. They took it back no problem. I also returned a jacket whose sleeves were ridiculously worn (my sister had the same jacket with no sleeve issue) to the HB REI, too, but they were a bit mean about it. I think they were trying to fish around for a good reason to send me home, jacket still in possession, with just 99% satisfaction. (b) Once in a while, they send out these 20% off one full price item coupons. REI charges full MSRP on everything any way, so it's a good deal, even better coupled with (A). By the way, regardless of what you're doing at the store, they genuinely want to help you out. They're not salesmen and won't try to push the best and/or most expensive product. read more

Awesome store. I love shopping here. I've been a number of times, now that I'm a budding camper and have loved each visit. Bought my REI Half-Dome 2+ a few months ago and actually helped a customer set it up when she was looking into buying one (the staff member helping her knew how to set it up, but I knew a few shortcuts). Another time, I was buying hiking boots and noticed that they have a little fake rock-thingy nearby so you can test out your boots on its surface. ingenious and very practical. I've raided their NorthFace selections time and time again and I love their customer service! Can't wait to camp! read more

I love REI! I cant believe I didn't write a review for it yet. It's dangerously close to my office! Every single REI person has been super helpful. I always learn something from them. They don't work by commission so they don't pressure you to buy stuff. All the staff do the outdoor activities themselves so they know what's good. I also like that sometimes you ask if you need x and they tell you nope, or they recommend something and if it's really expensive they also suggest a cheaper dyi method. With that said, I still spend way too much money here! Yes, things are more expensive than the chain sporting goods stores, but quality of the stuff really is better. Just check online reviews and you should be good :) read more

I went here twice in a day because I was searching for a bike. The guys here are so welcoming and helpful, it's what every customer loves! I was being helped by awesome staff when I walked through the door and when I exited the store! They know their stuff and will be honest with you! Gavin is the man! He helped my boyfriend and I with all the parts I needed to build my Yakima roof rack and bike attachment. He loves nature and is a very chill person! REI had a 20% off sale on all Yakima & Thule accessories and racks! Awesome deal and I sure took advantage of that! I also purchased a Novara bike from them and I love it! The roof rack looks awesome on my car and I'm seriously a happy camper! The Tustin store is really big and there's a better chance they'll have what you're looking for! I signed up for the REI membership and I have a feeling it's gonna be very worth it! Only $20 to become a member! I'm definitely coming back here for all my adventurous/outdoorsy stuff! read more

I've been going to REI since they were in the back of an obscure shopping center in Tustin and would only see strays of people shop there. The new digs in Tustin Ranch with the industrial storefront is a huge upgrade and is bringing hordes of people who would otherwise be at Best Buy or channel-surfing on their couch. This is a good thing. They have a good selection of any utility you'll need for almost any activity--mostly high quality and be forewarned, the prices do reflect that. I can't comment on customer service as we sparingly ask for help because everything is so organized. We got the new lifetime membership which pays for itself if you shop here often enough. read more

Love my local REI. Has lots of fun outdoors stuff. Good variety of brands. It's like a candy store for outdoorsy people! The staff here are super friendly and helpful. My husband and I were having a hard time deciding on which backpacking packs to get and the Asian guy that works there (sorry, can't remember your name now) helped us out. He filled different packs with rice bags, fitted them on us and let us schlep around the store while giving us the specs on each brand. In the end we chose the Osprey brand with the moldable hip rest. The bags worked great for our backpacking trip and was really comfortable. Hmm... I want to say this place rocks because I'm a big fan of the outdoors, but its tough when the all equipment just seems to be out of my price range. REI does stand by their products, so if you are ever unhappy with something you buy here, the return policy is easy enough. And they have A LOT of products here! I guess I'm jealous that I can't afford to buy most of them! If you have some extra disposable income, enjoy the outdoors, and like high quality products- REI is for you! Hiko helped my husband with a bag fitting and as he grabbed a few different choices you could tell he was really great at what he does. He reminds me of an associate who works at Nordstrom or Jos. A. Bank; he's very polite, thorough, offers suggestions and alternatives and pays attention to details. He'd fill a bag with sandbags and pillows to simulate what it would realistically feel like with weight but then he'd hold the bag straps open so my husband could easily put on the bag much like Nordstrom shoe salesmen placing shoes on your feet. Then he'd adjust the straps, moving his hands this way and that, and it was fascinating to watch because he was methodical and swift about it (I know it sounds weird but you'll have to take my word on this). While we didn't purchase a bag that night (husband wanted a different style and size), he wrote down the bag info and directed us to customer service saying we could get it shipped free to our home and we could return it if we weren't happy. He also asked if we were members (which we are) and mentioned the garage sale they were having in a few weeks. Customer service of that extent is a needle in a haystack. We expressed our gratitude for his expertise and assistance and he smiled as we said good-bye. He's a great representative of that store! Worth traveling to Tustin just to have him help you. As far as the store it has a bigger and better selection than the HB location. We found more options of the items we were looking for at this location than HB and we'd gone to both that night. read more

This REI is great, I was definitely able to find everything I needed for the outdoors. They are a little on the pricey side though. My only gripe is that a few months back I had horrible service in the shoe department! I hope they screen their employees better! Not only was I fumbling through shoes on my own while two employees were chatting it up with one customer, but after a guy brought out some shoes with a very negative attitude, he left into the back and never came back to check on me. Fortunately, it was the right size and all and I loved the product. I may think twice about going back to that part of the store. I also appreciate being able to order online and then picking up at the store for no shipping charges! read more

This place is great for any outdoor stuff. Love it! I just recently bought some Vibram Five Fingers here (and these are a bit tricky to find) and I love how much selection they have. The are these special socks for the Vibrams and I love the selection and colors. ALSO! LOVE the sales. If they are having a Tent Sale outside. should totally go! there's all sorts of cool stuff to find. Only down side, especially for the sale stuff, you gotta have a membership. I mean not to bad one time membership fee for life of $20. so keep that in mind---cuz I DID NOT know until I was at the register...and made up my mind buying the stuff that I did. read more

I love REI! They have the best customer service. This one is a little messy/un-organized and don't have the best kept stick, but the people are always helpful. My husband & I buy things from REI on a pretty consistent basis. The #1 reason is that they will take anything back no matter what if you are unsatisfied. This is amazing, mainly because how do you know you like something unless you try it? We don't return things too often, but when something doesn't perform to what it's suppose to or fails they will take it back, no questions asked. This REI is in a greet location. When we go up to Tustin we end up spending the majority of the day there. There are soooo many good stores close by that it can become an expensive day! read more

I've been an REI member for over 35 years and used to shop at the old store in the City Shopping Center and then at the Santa Ana Store off the 55. This is, by far, the nicest of those stores. I have pretty much all the gear anyone could ever need but occasionally stop in for upgrades and bargains. And this place makes it hard to resist the bargains. Sometimes, the deals are remarkable. For example, I bought a pair of La Sportiva Gore-Tex boots for $30 once. They retailed for $175 at the time. I've also picked up numerous pairs of shoes for less than 1/2 off. It probably helps that I wear size 13 and they're the size that is left over but my closet is getting full. Same goes for jackets. If you can deal with wearing last season's oddball color you can get a killer deal. The help is generally nice and not overly annoying like in some places where I have wear headphones just to keep people from asking if I need help 100,000 times. If I need help, I'll ask for it. The only downside is they don't have the selection one would find at the Seattle or Portland store but then it's OC and Saddleback isn't exactly Mount Rainier or Mt. Hood. What REI really needs is an Outlet Store where everything is a bargain. Maybe one out in Cabazon between Southern California's highest peaks. They'd need to put a campground next to it because people would want to live there. read more

Writing this review mainly as a review of their personal outfitting service and to thank Hiko in particular. My wife was fitted at a personal outfitting appt with Hiko for specialized thermo-moulded hiking shoes and he was incredibly patient, knowledgeable, and helpful throughout the entire process. The location is great, the people are all friendly, and though it was busy (as others have said) to checkout, I did notice that it was because many of the cashiers was helping with returns/online pickups which are probably higher this time of year because of the holiday. read more

Went to go buy water shoes for rafting trip. First time, so I came with a bunch of questions. I was helped by two employees that came across very knowledgable and had all my questions answered. I was trying a couple of pairs and they seemed happy to help me out and I never got that vibe that I was hassling them by making them go to the back to grab shoes several times. The cashier was very friendly and it felt genuine. This store is a little bit out of my way to go to, but if I go back again and get the same service, I wouldn't mind the drive at all. read more

As a full time climber (i.e. live on the road, unemployed, climb 300+ days a year) I can honestly say this is the best REI I have ever been to. The selection is great (climbing gear especially, but also clothes, camping gear, etc) and bigger/more varied than other REIs. So far the help has been friendly and knowledgeable, I never have to wander the store hunting down employees who don't even want to help (I'm looking at you, REI San Jose!)
