My first time here, looking for a fun cruising type bike. Greeted by a number of people and got good info on the bikes I was looking at. Open ended test ride, which was really fun, no pressure. Thy don't work on commission so no pressure. While I was there I heard people talking about making sure all customers were taken care of, good customer service... What a novel concept! I gave 4 stars because 5 to me is just outstanding, they were close but I did have to wait a bit after returning from the test ride, I'd say more due to understaffing than bad CS.... They have a HUGE selection of outdoor gear. My wife and I are going to Europe for our honeymoon and we wanted to buy backpacks that would be good for constant travel via bus, taxi, and plane. We also wanted backpacks that we could use for weekend camping as well. We were settling on some packs until one of the knowledgeable staff recommended we look at the REI Ruckpacks. He lead us over and gave us a quick demo and we were instantly sold! We bought both colors and they were at an incredible price (under $100 on sale)! Would highly recommend this REI. Do you need hiking shorts, an emergency whistle, a kayak, tent, backpack, freezedried food, hat, books on hiking, hydration systems, water purifying tablets ... you name it, REI probably has it. This larger store (they were in a much smaller place in Tustin off the 55) has lots of stuff, and it's easy to keep picking up things that fall into the category of "I didn't know I needed this but it's right here so ..." Staff is helpful, and even when the lines are crazy long (as they were last Saturday @ Memorial Day weekend), lots of checkout cashiers mean they move along pretty quickly. NEVER AGAIN !!!!! Don't waste your time or money. The garage sale is a huge rip off. It's all worthless junk. I got a Fitbit scale that was supposedly an open box brand new return. It was used and broken. Doesn't even work. I hate that they make you gamble with the electronics and no warranty to allow you to test it out. We can always find a decent way to spend $100+ every time we come here. People are real helpful and understand their departments and what they sell; most seem pretty passionate and look like they are enjoying themselves. You will never find a better group of people than those who work at REI. Every time I go in I end up staying way longer than I plan because the people who work here are so friendly and genuinely enjoy chatting about your upcoming trips. Everyone whose helped me has also always been extremely knowledgeable and, in addition to providing product recommendations, often help me with trail advice. This location also has a great selection - I feel like a kid in a candy shop going in. Return policy is the best I've seen (even better than Nordstrom in my opinion). Any problems with almost anything and they'll take it back within a year no questions asked. Even if you just change your mind and have already used the item. I recently returned a hydration bladder I (embarrassingly) had for 11 months before using. There was a small leak by the handle and I felt bad coming in to exchange it because I thought it would seem suspect that I just happened to have it for 11 months without using and realized there was a hole. The employee was incredibly apologetic to me that it happened and offered suggestions on some other brands since he said he'd heard of that happening with that particular model before. FIRST time there. LOVED IT. Vincent went above and beyond! everything from showing me where the outlet area where I got a nice backpack for $80 originally $200, and a few clothing items. He made sure the backpack fit correctly on me and helped with picking the right socks. He also told me about there policy, you can return things like shoes if they don't work out, because they are very important gear. So I bought some awesome shoes, which he helped me out with and saved me $50 by learning the box tie lace up on my shoes which gave me more room. Fantastic experience with their customer service. My boyfriend and I are just getting into hiking and backpacking. We came in looking for backpacks, sleeping bags, a tent, winter gear, and sleeping pads. We basically were need for all the gear necessary to backpack in the cold. What made our shopping experience excellent was an employee named Chris K. He was absolutely the best at explaining and teaching us about each item we were interested in. He helped me pick out a backpack and filled it with the weight I would be carrying and told us the proper way to wear it. He pointed out a dual sleeping pad that would benefit us more so than individual pads. Needless to say we had the best customer service we have ever experienced at any store thanks to Chris K. Service is great. Selection is great. Suggestion: if you are serious about the great outdoors but inexperienced, the slightly higher prices at REI are worth it because their service pros are very knowledgable and earnest. I needed maps and despite the low-ticket item, one of their personnel was VERY helpful to me. I felt like despite shopping for a ten buck item, the guy didn't mind, he just wanted to ensure my outdoor gear requirements were met whether I was spending 10 dollars or 1000 dollars. You just don't find that as much these days and it was refreshing and encourages me to return there for more purchases. My ten dollar map has gotten me three fun hikes so far in my quest to drop off useless pounds (no suggestions from wanabe comedians to decapitate myself please, har har har). They have a huge selection of tents, backpacks, clothing, sleeping bags, various specialist equipment, and some items are on clearance (the clearance stuff wasn't exciting when I went there a few weeks ago, but you never know, check the bin). read more

I have nothing but great things to say about this location. Knowledgeable, friendly, and patient employees who have helped me with a huge variety of things over the last 5 or so years. Rentals for backpacking is always smooth, my own pack was fitted 5 years ago by Greg and it's fantastic. The footwear and apparel departments have always been great to me. Gear sales can be a gold mine of great equipment for low cost. I got my first sleeping pad there with a steep discount, it just had a small hole in it which I patched and it has held up through years of abuse. I seriously have bought so much gear from this place if I were to tell you about every single thing this review would be nauseatingly long. Just have a general idea of what you are looking for by doing minimal research online first, then go in and test some stuff out. The customer service people are incredibly helpful. read more

I was recommended here for bike service I called and asked if they could re-spoke my fat tire, I also had the spokes for the tire.I was told yes over the phone and it would be done in 3 days due to wait period. I drove to their Tustin location (1hr away there and back) dropped off my tire and spokes. I got a call 3 days later expecting it to be good news. They call to tell me they can not re lace my spokes because it is too hard. They said the spokes were smaller than they are use to and they can't do it. (Even though I have a friend who brought a similar fat tire that's the exact same size, to them previously and had no issue). Big waste of time and they seems very unorganized when I arrived. Two employees were arguing about what bike was what. Then 4 hours after I pick my tire up and get home. An employee called me and told me my tire was fixed and done and ready for pickup. Huh?? I told him he was confused and I could tell he was embarrassed. Had to re explain this annoying situation to someone who has no clue what's going on in the store. Very unprofessional and a big waste of time. Makes me regret buying pedals from them when I found them for a cheaper cost at another store. read more

This rating us for bike shop in REI. when I brought it in the person who checked it out said the chain was good and didn't need to be replaced. Then when I picked it up found that they replaced it anyway at additional cost. I had them take that cost off the bill. When I took it for a ride, which I should have done before driving off, I found that there was considerable slippage and I couldn't get it into third gear. I continued riding it until it slipped again and I fell off my bike. Everything else at REI is great, but I won't be using the bike shop again. So I brought my bike to Santiago cycles in Tustin and found out my cable sheathes were sticking which is why I couldn't get into third gear. Why didn't REI catch this? It seems that either they didn't do a thorough tune up or noticed it and decided not to fix this after they put a new chain on... read more

I have got all my camping gear from REI for the last few years. Some of there stuff is expensive but it's worth every penny.

This review is for the bike shop. I would not recommend using REIs bike shop services, especially when there are other good options that are more cost effective. When doing a repair / tune-up on my sons mountain bike, they messed up. First they had the bike for like 2 weeks beyond the original estimated date of completion and I had to call repeatedly to make sure his order was being handled. Then once he finally got it back, the first time he rode it he told me something was weird with his gears and I noticed that the rear derailleur was 2 gears off. The tension was all wrong. Its an easy fix, but that really undermined my confidence in this bike shop and I havent been back. If you are wanting repair services / tune ups, I would suggest either going to a store that 100% sells only bikes (Jax, Rock & Road, etc), or having a mobile service like BeeLine bikes come out to your house. Im sure they have people there that know their stuff but its a vehicle and there are safety concerns when basic things get missed. read more

We all know and love REIs great equipment selection. A little pricey but generally high in quality so it's worth it. However, REI has gotten terrible operationally with its check out process in store. It's took me 40 minutes to return something today and I was the 12th person in the retail check out line! Guys - come on. Retail stores have this figured out nation wide decades ago. Either your lines are not organized properly (online vs return vs standard) or you are grossly under staffed. Went into REI to purchase hiking boots for an upcoming vacation. Told salesperson we were looking for myself and my daughter. He brought out some for me to try and ignored my daughter. Someone else finally ask if we needed help and brought out a pair for my daughter that were clearly too big even though she measured her foot. Then nothing ..... no how are they fitting? No do you want to see another style, no how are those working for you??? I mean I do not demand 100% attention but when I come into purchase $400-$500 worth of hiking boots I would appreciate your help. People wonder why so many retail stores are closing, perhaps the lack of customer service has something to do with it. We literally sat there for about 15 minutes and not one of them came back. First off let me say I've been a member of REI for over thirty years. I have never written them bad review. I'm only doing this now because in my last two visits (to two different stores) I have encountered very long waits when trying to purchase. These weren't weekends either when the crowds could tax any store's operations. These were slow midweek trips. in both the Tustin and Huntington Beach stores long lines were allowed to build while many different store employees came and went never once jumping on a cash register to lend a hand. Great place to satisfy your outdoor enthusiast urges. All of the staff members are very nice and helpful but not everyone is very knowledgeable about their products. I recently went to get the lowdown on some high end weekender backpacks, ultralight sleeping pads and ultralight gear. At one REI my friend was fitted one size too large. Then I went to the Tustin REI to double check everything. Tori, at the Tustin REI, was incredible and fitted my friend and I perfectly. I went back a day later and another person was not as knowledgeable and gave bad advice. Jonathan has awesome knowledge about ultralight backpacking and patiently gave me the details about equipment specifications and shared his personal experience in the wilderness. Moral of the story, ask for the best person that can help you in each department. Also, make sure you check online for other colors and selections not carried at the store. Look for their 20% coupon if you're not in a rush and keep your eye out for their Used Gear Sale. A caveat on the Used Gear Sale: they are sold as-is with no returns or guarantees. Most importantly become a member for a one-time fee. Overall it's a great place to shop because of their customer service, return policy, online free shipping to stores or minimum $50 orders, and knowledgeable crew (if you ask for the top dog). read more

My 19yr old daughter is the one who turned me onto REI, because they supposedly have such amazing customer service. That was 16 months ago. Since then, I have purchased over $3500 worth of merchandise between their website and their Tustin location. I've only had TWO transactions go smoothly. The others have been AWFUL! I had several online orders sent to their Tustin store, especially during the holidays. I paid online with my credit card & when I arrived at the Tustin store they wanted to take my credit card & charge me AGAIN for the items. I explained to them several times that I had already paid online and that the funds had been removed from my account. I even showed them my online banking account AND REI account, where it showed very clearly that I had paid for the items. But each manager insisted that I was wrong and spoke down to me in a very condescending tone. Well, I didn't have another $750 on hand, so I asked if they could please hold the items until they reversed the $750 charge that was taken out of my account. Then, I would be able to pay them the $750 in person when I picked up the merchandise. During that next week while I was waiting for the charges to be reversed, I was charged ANOTHER $750. I finally had their lead manager on the phone one day and she initially seemed very concerned as to why her employees had been charging me again for items I was picking up at their store. She told me she put my items on hold and was going to make sure they did not get put away, after she FINALLY realized that REI had charged me twice for the SAME items I bought online, and that her employees had tried to charge me again when I picked them up in the store. One week later, the charges had been reversed & I called to let them know I would be picking them up that day. They told me that ALL the items had been put back on the shelf! I spoke to the manager that had put them on hold & she said to me "Oops! Oh thats my fault! I wasn't here for the afternoon & I guess one of my employees put them back. I can't believe that happened! I'm so sorry! But NO worries, the money will be credited back to your card within the next week or so. Anything I can help you with?" This all took place after I have told her REPEATEDLY that these items were ALL for my daughter, they were birthday and Christmas presents because she had been gone on a Mission trip in Uganda since September & wouldn't be home until February. The manager did nothing to fix THEIR mistake, not even to merely go requisition the items that THEIR employee had returned to the floor or to the warehouse......the items taken from MY bags that were on HOLD, filled with items I had already PAID for several times & had to wait for the charges to be reversed. I went back online, but many of the items were already out of stock. This was such a nightmare. If my daughter didn't love their stuff so much, I would not have dealt with them again. My advice....either buy your items in person or have them shipped to you directly. Having them sent to the store may end with a wonderful adventure like mine! read more

As a former manager in retail, it pains me to give only one star to this store. The only reason I am giving one star is because of the one person in the whole store that actually treated me like a person. I walked in on a mission to buy a new jogging stroller. Having previously researched the Thule jogging stroller on line I wanted to see it in person and possibly put my little in one to see how well he fit. We are avid outdoor people and I needed a really reliable stroller to keep up with the amount of miles we jog and walk on a daily basis, no matter the terrain. Anyhow I wasn't acknowledged when I walked into the store while several employees were talking amongst each other. Then I proceeded to walk about the whole store, trying to locate the jogging strollers and not one associate had asked if I needed any assistance. I walked to the back of the store to look at some hiking boots in my travels along the store. To my surprise several employees looked at me, but had no regard to me needing help with a shoe. I finally asked an associate if I could get help finding the jogging strollers and also a hiking boot I was looking for. He directed me to another man who was putting away shoes. This man looked up at the other employee and said yeah just a minute. He took about ten more minutes to appear from the stock room and ask what I needed. He then brought back the shoes and never gave me a second more of his time, I thought maybe he would have followed up to see if I needed further help. Moving on to the stroller issue. I walked over to where an employee pointed to where they were cause she couldn't leave her designated post. I walked around a display of two strollers, then after asking a woman who looked to be in management attire if she could assist me. She waved over the woman who said she couldn't leave her area to help me. She then said she would be back with another person who could help me. A man approached and inquired to what I needed he then walked away quickly to the computer. After a few moments I followed him over to ask if he did have the item. He proceeded to tell me none of the REI stores carried them in store and that I had to order on line. I had stated I was looking on line earlier and the only reason I had come in was because I could pick one up in person according to the website. He then said, "well did you wanna look for yourself cause it says right here on my screen you can't". At that point I just said nope I'm good and we headed out on our way. Honestly I was prepared to spend 400 plus dollars but not after that experience. I went home and ended up purchasing the stroller off line, but not through REI after that experience. read more

Customer service is DEAD! I'd have to say I've been feeling this way for years but thanks to my most recent experience with REI, I am now absolutely sure of it. I've been coming to this location for the last 5 years and have essentially never had a good experience. I'm extremely sad to say this because I actually love REI! I've been going to their stores in the bay area since they opened and usually, the experience has been a good one. But, I think that the company has now become too big and has gotten away from its 100% satisfaction guarantee. Everytime (except on Monday when their gigantic sale started) I have come in here, there has been no one available to help me. I wander around with a confused look on my face and still, no one asks if I need any assistance. I have to hunt people down in order to ask them questions and when I do, they act as if they have somewhere else to be. Ugh.. isn't this your job buddy? Anyhow, what truly cemented their place in my list of horrible customer service companies occurred in their tune-up shop. I had brought my newly purchased bicycle to the store for its 3-6 month tune-up. Mind you, I spent around $700 to purchase this bike. And.. the gears weren't working properly and I asked them about something that had been happening with my bike that had bent one of the pieces. Well, instead of listening to me, the guy immediately tried to prove me wrong. Then, he asked another guy in the shop just to try to prove me more wrong. And, when I kept trying to insist that I had not done any of those things, he essentially insinuated that I was lying and that I was at fault. So of course I got frustrated and said that REI has a 100% satisfaction guarantee and that my bike is still on warranty and he got snappy! The bastard!! All I wanted was for them to fix the bike and tell me how to prevent the problem from happening in the future. What I got was him telling me, "We'll fix it this time if we have to, but if it happens again, you're on your own!" Well, thanks butthead for not even telling me how to avoid the problem. So yes, REI, you are now on my blacklist. I will avoid you like the plague and will take my business to better, more friendly stores like Patagonia. read more
