Had brunch at Reign today. It's definitely on the higher end side. But they have wonderful selections on the menu and the food is most excellent. I had the omelette, which gives a choice of different fillings with sourdough toast and coffee. It was wonderful. My friends had the smoked trout Tartine and the smoked trout Benny. Both look great my friend also had a smoothie and she said it was very good. Service was very attentive. This is the restaurant that used to be Epic and with the redesign it's really a lovely space. Highly recommend if you're looking for an upscale brunch. There is parking behind the Fairmont at 79 Wellington, which has direct access to the Hotel. And of course TTC will get you to Union Station, which is right across the road. read more

Another great Christmas dinner at Reign. We did a 4pm seating. The decor is gorgeous as usual and was pleasantly surprised to see Santa Claus in the hotel before we made our way to the Restaurant. Warm and cozy atmosphere with just enough sparkle. Our server was attentive and lovely. I had the veloute, turkey dinner and Black Forest log slice. The food was all very good. Brussel sprouts could have been less charred. Loved the mash potatoes (no truffle) and stuffing. The veloute was a very generous portion to start as well. I was quite full by time dessert came. Came here for breakfast as I was staying nearby before starting the work day. I definitely feel like I was under dressed since everybody was in formal-ish attire. I was here at the lounge service only - for the live music of a local musician I have been interested in, and their cocktails. The performance was 2-4, on Tuesday. I emailed them prior to ask if it is not awkward to go alone just for the music, and they replied very quickly to assure me it is totally OK. So I took half day off from work. I know that they serve good cocktails, so I wanted to try some with music! I was unsure where this lounge is located on the hotel's ground floor which has other bars, cafes and lounge spaces, but once I entered the hotel entrance, I was naturally guided by the beautiful sound of piano, and I knew where I should be heading to. And there I was. The experience was great and unique to me. I was alone, but it was not a big deal as the lounge was a relaxed open space. I was seated at one of their lounge chairs in the space with a small table just for me. Once seated, I felt like I was in a comfortable private space just for me to enjoy music and self-reflection - which I needed right now after series of busy work days! I had one cocktail - Province Cosmopolitan (Absolute citrine, Cointreau, pomegranate, cranberry, lime , syrup, Herb de province syrup) . It tastes light but not lacking booziness. Pomegranate's flavor was unique. Simple but stylish presentation, and the flavors and booze were perfectly balanced. The lounge staff members who served my space were not intrusive, respecting my time. And knew where I wanted their attention - beautiful, and I appreciated it. The ambiance was nice for a small hotel bar, it was dim but bright enough to see there was a live singer which was nice tables were large and spacious didn't feel crowded. I had an awesome experience at Reign. I started with the Old Fashioned, which was exceptional. For dinner, I ordered the Brussel Sprouts and Venison Tenderloin. The Brussel Sprouts were very flavorful, but almost too much. I think they're great to share with others, but there's so much sauce and cheese that it makes you wonder how much health benefit you actually get from eating them. The Ottawa Venison Tenderloin was amazing. I had it medium rare and it was just perfect. Not much else to say. Best dish I have had in Toronto so far. The service was great, Jen did an excellent job. After waiting for an hour and being told, there wasn't a tables they finally let me in to a restaurant that was half full. Morons. Love the interior design of the restaurant - inspired by and designed to resemble a train station and the interior of a train. The food was very good overall. I went for Summerlicious Lunch. The Hangar Steak entree was overcooked though - I ordered medium rare but got a very medium steak. Their coffee is good but at $8 for black coffee, it was quite overpriced. Service was good except in the middle of the dining. The guy who brought over my entree basically put it down on my table then turned around and went away immediately and the waiter didn't come by; I even tried to wave him down but he kept walking by turned away. The roasted pear salad was very fresh and tasty. The blue cheese on it with pear is excellent. The braised beef was very tender, and the carrots were well cooked and had a bit of sweetness to them. We got breakfast- homestead breakfast with eggs, potatoes, bacon and sourdough toast and the reign pancake stack with strawberries, mascarpone and almonds. No complaints about food at all. Beware: we wanted to get drinks there the night before (Saturday night) and they had a 1.5hr+ waitlist for two people which meant we didn't get in before they had last call. A very good breakfast buffet in elegant surroundings. The restaurant is beautifully and classically designed with varied seating areas, so it feels intimate. It is located off the lobby of the Fairmont Royal York Hotel, one of the grand old Canadian railroad hotels, across from the main train station. Our server was one of the most professional and proper waiters I have met in a very long time. He offered options and was very in tune to accommodate for a very nice experience. I wish service was this good everywhere. The breakfast buffet items are good. They will special make omelets or Benedict if you'd like so that it is freshly made and not sitting in a warming dish. BRAVO! I decided to have waffles, and they were so fluffy and delicious with real Canadian maple syrup. This syrup is not comparable to anything we get in the States. You can taste the crunch of sugar. That is how rich it is, and so smooth. I put an ample amount of fresh berries on top, and with some sausage, it was perfect. I also got a bowl of fresh fruit. Really mouthwatering & yes I ate every single bite left no crumb on my plate lol. SN: seems fried food is served with a side of mayo in Canada (fries in this instance). To my surprise, the service was very mediocre. The server has absolutely no smile on his face and seems like he doesn't want to be there. Prices are high - to be expected for Fairmont Royal York's main dining space. The atmosphere is very charming. Old world elegance oozes out of every corner. This was our first time trying this restaurant - to summarize, the food was average, environment was amazing, and service was extraordinary. For appetizers, we got the charred maitake mushroom, east coast oysters, and steak tartare. The steak tartare was my favourite. I wouldn't get the mushroom or oysters again, especially for that price. The east coast oysters were just malpeques, which are usually the oysters that you can get for a buck a shuck at other places. For entrees, we got the shrimp and scallop chitarra, and steaks. The steaks were cooked well and the pasta was really good - had a good amount of shrimp and scallops. However, nothing was above average - you can get these at other restaurants for a lower price. Desserts were my favourite - we got the strawberry shortcake and coffee crisp. Both were beautifully presented and had great flavours! The drinks were on the stronger side - not my personal preference, but noting here as an FYI. If you're looking for a nice ambience and great service, this is your place to go. But for great food, there's definitely alternatives in the downtown area for better value. read more

This is a very pretty place to bring someone special or in our case, to have an informal culture fit interview for a new hire! Our normal go-to coffee place was actually closed for renovations so we thought we'd do it up big. We went into the Royal York from the main entrance that faces front. If you come in from this direction, you have to walk past the main lobby bar lounge to the back right corner of the hotel. This is where you'll find the hostess stand for Reign. They were able to find a private room for us with a giant round table at the back. The table was tastefully decorated with gold modern deer accent pieces and a stone bowl of succulents that were really well maintained per our plant expert coworker. Our waiter was a little bit curt with us and seemed to be in a rush. It didn't seem super busy at the time however. The food and drink at Reign was very good. The latte I ordered was great. I was hoping for a slightly bigger bakery selection since they do boast that title in the name. I wound up getting a croissant to nibble on. It was one of the better ones that I've had in the city for sure. I'd like to come back for a full meal. I would like to start by saying that the staff were all very kind, very professional, and *mostly* attentive. Sort of. Now moving on ... My husband and I were in Toronto for the weekend and made a late reservation here (8:30pm) to celebrate my birthday. Pro: we were seated right away. Con: the whole restaurant is quite large and was wide open with scattered tables of patrons, and they chose to sit us in a back room area .... in the middle of a corporate business dinner. Yes, as in the entire small semi-private room was filled with roughly 30+ business people all working for the same company, there together on a conference of some sort. And then there was us ... placed in the middle of it. Had we realized this sooner we would have asked to be moved to a different area. But we didn't, so we remained in the middle of their business dinner, which at one point included the CEO apologizing to us as he then very seriously addressed the room filled with his team ... and us. So that was weird AF. Moving on ... We ordered two cocktails, a charcuterie board app, lobster linguini and the bone-in ribeye (for a cool $95 CAD plus OF COURSE an additional a la carte side, because for $95 you only get the meat). We also planned to order some red wine with dinner but that never actually happened because no one ever asked if we wanted anything else to drink beyond that first order. They were very attentive with refilling our water though. So anyway ... The charcuterie board was fine. Nothing overly unique or amazing, but satisfying. The pasta was good. No complaints. The ribeye ... well ... The $95 BONE-IN ribeye was a 1" thick boneless piece of under-seasoned steak. We've had far better at an Outback Steakhouse. I'm being 100% serious. We address this bonelessness as well as the thickness (or lack there of) with one of our servers (we had a few different servers which was interesting). The server said (literally), "yes, you are correct. It is supposed to be a bone-in ribeye. They are always bone-in. Looks like yours doesn't have a bone I guess." And then she smiled and walked away and that was that. So by this time, it's about 10pm and we're not only exhausted but also disappointed. After we finished our meals, we just sat there waiting around in an empty area of the restaurant (the business dinner had since left). Servers walked past, but no one stopped at our table to say anything, as if we had left with the business meeting or something. After 15 minutes of just sitting there, one of the servers brought over new silverware. We said, "oh, no dessert thank you we're ready for the check". Well, the restaurant knew it was my birthday, (open table), and the server said they were preparing a little something (very nice of them) but I'll be honest, by 10:15pm we were more than ready to get out of there, but we didn't want to be rude so we of course stayed. Pro: they brought us two absolutely beautiful and delicious gourmet desserts Cons: it took ANOTHER 15 minutes of waiting around in a quiet empty restaurant for them to be delivered to the table. Not only was I exhausted by this point but we were so tired from just sitting there waiting (for now 30 minutes) that we truly didn't enjoy the dessert all that much. Don't get me wrong ... was very good. But it just wasn't enough to overcome all of the other missteps. Looking for a summary? Here you go: Would I go here again? Absolutely not. Should YOU go here? Do whatever you want but there are without a doubt DOZENS of much better restaurants in that city to spend your time and money at. read more

I had lunch here with a colleague last week. To start, when I asked if they had any nice non-alcoholic cocktails, the waiter didn't understand me, so I asked in a different way. He pointed to the "soda" section. Again I asked, and he said no. After a few minutes, my friend and I found one buried on the menu - Seedlip with ginger beer (it was fine). We both ordered steak tartare and shared an insanely high-priced gem salad. The meal was again - fine. Here's the awful part though.... It turns out both of us got food poisoning - both up all night (I'll leave this part to your imagination!!). Suffice it to say we were REALLY sick - both at the same time - starting at 8pm that night. Neither of us recovered fully for several days. The next day my colleague contacted the restaurant and their response was, "no one else complained...". Are you kidding me? The food was so good I forgot to take pictures. I started with the mushroom bisque, which was so good. Even the bread that they served was just immaculate. Then I had the duck which was absolutely succulent. My friend had the honeyed heirloom carrots, which was on a bed of lentils. She let me have a little taste and it was magnificent. And then we split the winter citrus tart. The flavours really worked well together and especially the passion fruit. The ambiance and decor are comfortable luxury. And our server was absolutely wonderful. In fact, all of the staff were extremely kind and lovely people.
