Quite simply, the best Chinese food in the East Bay, bar none. My favorite is the orange beef; but honestly, whatever you see on the menu is going to be great. The atmosphere is calm and peaceful - love that Mozart on the P.A. - and the waitresses are sweet and friendly. I note that one of the reviewers complained about Chinese food being served in Bento boxes - which seems to me to be a sensible way to serve their daily lunch specials - but if that's the worst you can say about the place, Renee's must be doing something good. This is the first time I have ever written a review and the reason I am doing so is because it was the most disappointing dinner I have ever had. Talk about a horrible Christmas dinner. We ordered take out food and we were told it would be a 50 minute wait. That was not the bad part the bad part was that it was 50 minutes plus a 20 minute wait at pick-up time. Our food was cold and the broccoli beef as well as the hot and sour soup were HORRIBLE. It's unfortunate I have no desire to go to this restaurant ever again and it is just a 2 minute walk from my house. Next time I will definitely continue up the block for much better food. read more

Good food, fresh ingredients, friendly service. Am knocking the rating down as it was fairly pricey for some dishes. (I was wondering why there were so few asian diners and I guess this is why!). Steamed juicy chicken buns were tasty but tiny and only 6 for $10.95. Also, $5 for two small servings of brown rice! Will likely go again but will stick to stuff like beef and broccoli, prawn with veges, black bean chicken, which are much better value. read more

Renee's is the best Chinese in Berkeley hands down. I've lived in the area for years and have tried all of the other options. I would put Great China as second, but Renee's stands out for several reasons. First, the focus is on organic and local ingredients. The result is delicious food that makes you feel good, which is not always the case with local Chinese. The restaurant is modern and enjoyable. This is a great place for a business dinner or romantic evening. The soup dumplings are out of this world and Renee's team is always mixing things up with new specials focused on what is fresh and in season. Renee uses organic produce, sustainable antibiotic free meat, and everything is so fresh. She remembers us every time we come in and is so nice, since I am a regular, she always sends us complimentary food ( last time it was hot and sour soup and a spicy sliced chicken) Engage yourself with her, she is so nice and gracious, the way an owner whould be if they want repeat business!! This is the best Chinese food I've eaten, absolutely. The food is organic and locally sourced which is a rare treat to find in a Chinese place. The garlic shrimp were huge, plump and perfectly cleaned in an interesting, well spiced sauce. The orange chicken was perfect: tender morsels of chicken, slightly crisp, no heavy batter or oily taste, a perfect sauce. Pan fried noodles were also as good as they get with a mixture of crispy and soft noodles and lots of topping. Smoked Tea Duck was tender and not oily. I thought the portions were huge. If you buy high quality meats, seafood and organic vegetables you'll know that the prices at Renee's, although a few dollars higher per dish than most Chinese restaurants, were in fact very reasonable for the quality of the food. The ambiance is quiet, serene and beautiful. Service was excellent. Obviously there's care and attention to detail in every level of food preparation and service. I can't see the point in going anywhere else for Chinese food and feel this restaurant also competes favorably when I want to go to a high end restaurant for a romantic meal. read more

I have been to Renee's for dinner 3 times. When I am craving something that will not make me feel like I ate a brick for dinner I head to Renee's. I always order the Rock Cod soup which is by far my favorite dish. It is spicy enough for me without being too spicy to eat. I have also ordered the chicken Kung Pao which was good. The orange scallop dish that I ordered this last time was very tasty and I would order it again. Be advised that they do not always have the beers listed on the beer selection. Therefore, before you become deadest on a beer ask the server what beers they have at that time. The owner, Renee, is extremely nice and will stop by your table frequently in order to ask if everything is alright. The service has always been prompt and polite. When I have been there on a weekday (Monday - Thursday) I have been able to get a table immediately. However, when I have been there on a weekend (Friday - Saturday) I have called in advance since there has been a considerable wait the one weekend I went. Renee's Place is either something you really like or you won't. In all the 10+ years we have been regulars we have never brought a guest or family member that was not totally impressed. Renee's does not fit a stereotype of cheap carryout food. They use organic ingredients and will customize most dishes for low or no salt, or low fat. However it is a restaurant and not a special dietary kitchen, so you do need to communicate. That being said our favorites include: Wonton Soup, Orange Chicken, Mongolian Lamb, Marco Polo Prawns, any Mu Shu and Vegetable Chow Mein. Renee knows her customers and we have very much enjoyed her personal greeting and care with each visit. They will easily substitute or leave out ingredients - we have allergies and preferences for certain vegetables. Sometimes we would rather have chicken in a dish than what is listed, or added broccoli. That is never a problem. They have recently added some great beers and wines to the menu and it makes a great evening. Generally there is little or no wait but people do like to celebrate here so weekends, holidays and graduation times you might want to come in early or call ahead. read more

We had a terrible experience at Renee's. We had to ask to NOT be seated at large round table, too large for our party of 4 and we wouldn't have been able to hear each other over the loud volume of other voices. We got seated at a table for 4, then waited. And waited. And waited. We started seeing other tables of 4 be seated and served and eating, and has to wave staff down to get our menues and have our order taken. We hoped the food would redeem their poor service, but sadly that was not the case. The "mound" of Chinese fries was a flat layer of about 12 friend on flat plate. They were soft and warm, not crispy or very tasty at all. The pot stickers were ok. The main dishes were all extremely salty, and we are not salt averse. We also noticed a lack of mushrooms in plates that indicated an assortment of vegetables, which in our experience is unusual for a Chinese restaurant. We will never return to Renee's. All 4 of us were shaking our heads as we left. read more

ok. me and my girl enter the place are seated quickly and some basic tasting tea was given to us we take a few minutes to order and decide to get the green onion pancake i think its called as a appetizer it was brought to us by another lady who as soon as i saw her i knew i wouldn't like her she had a stern serious face and throughout the whole meal barely smiled. i was thinking it would be a crisp fluffy pancake like thing instead it was a lukewarm plywood thin chewy tiny quesadilla looking thing that was cut into 4 pieces.... it wasn't too good...we get our food kung pao chicken for me and a lunch special lemon chicken for the lady my food was warm and the portion was generous my girls chicken was nice and hot but the kalamari was 4 tiny pieces of overly breaded cold and rather pathetic. the salad that came with her food was very good the dressing they used was sweet and fresh. rice and chow mein was regular stuff. why i am only giving it 2 stars was because the lady i said i didn't like really seemed as though she didn't enjoy her job at all i thanked her every time she brought us our food or more tea and she never said anything back. we paid with a debit card and boxed our food up to leave we were walking out the door when she said wait wait you didn't sign so my girl signed and we were once again about to leave when she stopped us again. you didn't sign the amount you owe...so we sign and once again we leave but were stopped yet again wait wait. no tip? she asked. by this time me and my girl were feeling uncomfortable by her tone of voice and she kept repeating no tip? we looked at each other and said yeah no tip! don't you tip when you pay for the food not when your walking out the door? anyway i won't be back because of that sour lady, maybe she just had a bad day. i wanted to give this place 1 star solely on that ladys attitude but my girl said to be nice so if you go here the foods good for the price but that lady really ruined out experience. and when we got up to leave before the whole signing thing i said thank you, have a nice day. she didn't even turn to look at me and muttered "yeah" read more
