I'm not vegan, but I really love the food and simplicity (only choice is moderate or full size). Service is direct but good. The staff seems more than willing to answer questions. Interior is not overly lavish but has nice cultural accents. Although the moderate and full seem about the same size, the full size is more filling than it looks. I've been coming to any of the three locations for 14 years. Albany is my favorite location, I'm not sure what they do different but I have a feeling they season their food a little bit more expertly. They don't have a typical menu you would expect to see from a restaurant. Basically you order, medium or large plate depending on your appetite. The meals are basically similar and change every day slightly. Always, including some kind of multi grain brown rice, greens with mushroom gravy, some kind of legume side, a green salad, and a vegetable side plus soup. I know the Buddhist chefs pray over their food as they cook, and I swear you can feel it in your bones after you eat! This is definitely one of my most favorite spots to eat in the East Bay when I need something filling and good for me. Not only is it healthy, but it is extremely satisfying . Great solid tasty balanced healthy vegan food. I've gone a few times. They have a different menu everyday and their food is pretty similar with a few different items on the menu. You can get a half or full plate which comes with soup. They also have self serve tea and water. I really like the hot tea they have. I tried the chocolate and strawberry pie slices and they were smooth and creamy. Really impressive nutritious vegan food with lots of flavor that is not too overpowering. I love their green lentil mixed veggie soup, it doesn't taste too salty and it just about right. There are so many different flavors all in one plate. The mixed green salad usually comes with a dressing that is slightly sweet. The other sides are savory but each with different flavors. The seasoning for the garbanzo beans with onion and kabocha squash taste like curry flavor. To-go orders will charge extra $1 for the to-go box, utensils, napkins, and paper bag. I really liked Potala Vegan when it was open and appreciated the family-style approach they took to their meals (review: https://bit.ly/3420qAy). They didn't put on airs, and it felt like I was living in a commune just finishing my shift making love beads to sell at the next Woodstock. When it closed and became a Thai restaurant, I shrugged my shoulders thinking I'd have to go to Souley Vegan or Vegan Mob for my next vegan meal. However, I was mildly giddy when I passed by this spot. They reopened for business on San Pablo closer to Solano. It was great to find out Chef Tenzin was back in the kitchen, and out of pure convenience, my first attempt at a meal was actually a Door Dash delivery. For $15.50, I received the Full Dinner Plate in a compostable tray. Their specialties that evening were a flavorful mashup of baked kabocha squash, celery, turnip, and yam; mung beans with onion & carrot; and steamed collard kale with shiitake mushroom beet sauce. I've been wanting to try this place for awhile now but I really wanted to try dine in and not DoorDash. Today I was able to stop in and they did not disappoint! I have been eating terribly the last month and my body was yelling at me for some real food and Shangri-La was perfect. The girl who took care of me was very sweet and explained to me how it worked. The menu is preset and comes in two sizes. I got the moderate portion and it was a lot of food. The meal starts off with a warm bowl of soup. The plate was beautiful I mean come on look at it. There were so many varieties of flavors and textures on the plate but they all complimented each other so well. I particularly loved the dressing on the mixed greens salad and the collard greens with the mushroom sauce. Overall the meal was wonderful and I could eat this everyday. I could not leave without trying the pie I got a slice of key lime and it was so cool creamy and refreshing without being overly sweet. The restaurant its self was very clean and so peaceful. However once you go in it feels cozy and really gentle inside. The ambiance is very chill. They only feature one item on the menu every night plus hot tea so no need to think about what to order. The night of this review they had sautéed greens(very good flavor), stewed veggies(not overly cooked and decent flavor ), salad(fresh and delish), and bean cake(I didn't really like this as much sadly but they did make an effort to flavor it up.)
