Ren's Mobil Service is a local and full service gas station that offers friendly conversation, a miniature store, and a warm welcome to the diverse community Amherst offers. The man I met told me he had been working there for his family over 20 years, and it's hard to find a better local resource than this for the price of a small tip and your gas. The station was very accessible and neatly kept right before the heart of downtown Amherst. You can pull in from either direction--just know what side of your car has the gas cap! All in all, I would tell international travelers, locals, students, and people of all ages and walks of life to go here. I'm certain they'll make you feel welcome and answer your questions, even in the bitter cold. Again, for full service gas, the price is low so mind to tip your attendant, 10% is a good amount and fits the current era we live in. I'm just finished correcting College Street motors info- who incorrectly advertised they were open until 8:30 tonite, Saturday before a warning of 2 feet of the white stuff up near the Vt. Border in Heath. I raced down here to AMHERST, instead of heading to Keene or Hadley which had tire service places I could have made. I've been calling folks offering my first born male child if they would stay open a little bit after 6., but pleas were not met with the Chivalry I'd hoped... Then called a place and while their service guys had already left, he did something that shocked me/ He HELPED! He went through the places I had been left out in the cold by - once is enough... but the Auto Angel urges me to give him 15-20 minutes and like an unlikely SUPER HERO, vowed to find me a much - MUCH needed place to put on my snow tires, without which it is likely I will not make it up into the hinterlands of Heath...and if I by some miracle, make it, I stand no chance of escaping to any semblance of civilization and basic needs for my two and four legged family. They give you a price, do the work, and then charge significantly more without giving any notice. Also caught them adding in parts that were not necessary. Deeply unimpressed by Ren's in Amherst, MA. Will never, ever go back there. Beware. read more

This is what great service and quality work looks like in one. Ren's Mobil Service is conveniently located in town and can not be missed. My first experience was just adding gas for my car on my trips back home from school. My second experience was calling and asking if they had a certain part for my car. They were extremely courteous and told me that they didn't have the part, but recommended an auto supply store near me! My third experience was coming in and having them fix my tire for me. Phil was the worked who met me outside and was extremely nice and offered to grab the tire and bring it inside for me. Ren, the owner I'm assuming, gave me a seat inside and just chatted with me and how his family just celebrated his grandson's birthday. Really nice workers. Fast. Convenient. Affordable. Really nice. My mother who passed away years ago did business with Ren so I figured I'd do the same. I like to support local businesses. I was visiting town and was in an accident with my car so he offered to sell me one of his off the lot. I took his word that the car was in great shape (as he has a shop on site) and purchased it. Ren sold me a $6000 dollar car, but never mentioned the $2750 worth of repairs that it needed, which I found out a week later when I had it looked at in a a shop out of state where I live. I have been trying to contact him for days about this matter and he's completely ignored me. When I call the shop to follow up they are rude to me. Don't be the next one. read more

Ren's Mobil is a full service gas station, repair station and used auto dealer owned by people who had nice hot wheels collections as kids. I only say this because they always have a car parked in front that looks like something I wished I had as a child and at 46 still wish I had. They raise cars from the dead, are very friendly and always have a crazy ride out front. It's always fun stopping in or driving past and I would totally trust them when buying a used car. I don't know the name of the mechanic at this station, but if I did, I would post it. I brought in my car a while back to have it checked out at this station, and when I walked in, there was immediately this dismissive attitude about, kind of like, what do you want/what are you doing here, and one guy was even talking on the phone, completely ignoring me while I awkwardly stood there. I should known then to switch to another place, but okay, whatever, I leave the keys there, and then get a call back the next day telling me I need to fix my car and it's going to cost at least $1500. I say I'll think about it and ask if I can get back to him tomorrow after I talk to my friend, and the mechanic says, well we're pretty booked, so unless you're going to agree to do the repair job, come get your car tonight, derisively saying "I'm SURE you can walk over from Amherst tonight, as it's not that far." As I am explaining that I actually have a class to attend that night and won't be back until really late when I think the station has already closed, HE ACTUALLY HANGS UP ON ME WHILE I'm the middle of talking. I've seen rude, but never THIS rude. I get my male friend to talk to the guy, and he says that he also thinks he was rude, but he didn't hang up on him or anything. Also one time when he walked in with me, the guys at the counter immediately began talking to him, so unlike the experience I had when I went in there alone, so I don't want to claim sexism, but hey, if it's there, it's there, and apparently not that rare in the auto industry. Now the ONLY reason why I'm giving it two stars is because when I went to go pick the car up with a couple of friends (after deciding NOT to get it fixed there and give them my money), the guys who were working there this time were some of the nicest people I'd ever met. The same mechanic guy was there and of course he didn't even look up, but the other people there were so friendly, I was shocked! So my conclusion is that apparently this place has both really nice people and really mean people (i.e. the main mechanic guy). If only the first couple of times I went in these nice people were there, I doubt I'd be giving this review right now.... read more

Good, honest mechanic and reasonably priced.

We saw we had a nearly flat tire after going out in Amherst at night. We needed to inflate it just to make it home and then to a garage on the morning. The gentleman had already closed up the station but, upon seeing our situation, took care of everything and we were on our merry way. read more
