I love my Ramen. I love ramen so much that the first thing I did when I landed in Japan (after 20 hours of flight time with an 8 hour layover in between) was toss my luggage into my hotel room and hauled myself over to the Ramen Museum in Yokohama. I skipped all the way there. And just in case you were wondering, yeah, I did get a hotel in Yokohama just so I can be 5 blocks away from the Ramen Museum. That should tell you how serious I am about this. With that said, I was deeply depressed after my month long Japan trip as there were no comparable bowl of noodle and pork broth that could alleviate how much I missed the ramen in Japan. Everything was just missing that magic I could not find here on the East coast. Even up in New York, with maybe one exception. I was so desperate at one point I even endured the the 5 hour wait list at Toki without complaints, in the cold. The disappointment that was is for another review. Before I digress further, eating at Ren's was the first time after my Japan trip where the first moment the soup danced on my palate I felt happy. Happy like I was at a stand-up ramen bar in the middle of the train station, or when I was in Dotonbori or when I stalked the taxi drivers to see where they got their late night snacks or when I found Musashi Ramen in Shinjuku or or or... =) Anyways, at Ren's I slurped my way through an entire bowl in no time at all, a blissful blink of an eye - as I had in Japan. Just like Naruto. ( Can't believe I just made that reference) I even slurped like the way it was supposed to be done. With the proper air and noodle intake ratio for maximum taste without burning yourself. Sounds and all. At Ren's it was the first time the ramen tasted like Japan, as cheesy as that sounds. You will be shocked how hard that was to find. Each bowl regardless of soup is $10 and you add on topping for additional price and built your bowl from there. You will want to and have to get at least one of the extra meat topping and the egg. By default you will get one piece of nori with each bowl so I also suggest getting the wakeme. I care very little for bamboo shoots but they were good as well. Not at all fiber-y or too chewy. As the style of ramen served at Ren's originates from Hokkido it is a regional specialty for it to be served with a square of butter (about 1.5 tablespoon, see my picture =p) and yellow corn. Just something you might want to consider. 4 of us ate for about $75 before tips, no drinks and no appetizer (they were out of gyoza). Pricier than what I expected but totally worth it. Cash only. Basically, they only serve Ramen here: Sapporo style Ramen. You can pick 3 different broth: miso, salt or soy sauce. The standard Sapporo Ramen comes with 1 roast pork (Chashu pork), ground beef, ramen, seaweed and bamboo shoots. I definitely recommend ordering extra sides such as additional stewed pork belly [2 for $3.50], additional roast pork [4 for $3.50] or even their Gyoza [dumplings]. Overall, it's not bad. I would've given it a 3 stars because it's 1 of the better ramen around this area but I can't overlook how salty the broth was. If this place's located in San Fran or NY, it definitely won't do that well. **Ramen - texture and flavor is good. **Broth - way too salty. After finishing the broth, I got really thirsty. Gave three stars because of two simple things about this place. The parking is a nightmare. There's 3 restaurants and about 8 spots. I've only found a spot once. Second irritating factor is they are really rude. Plus they have a sign with actual "rules". It's crazy. Got yelled at for holding the door open for my wife, saw other people rudely asked to go wait outside. Mind you it's been 10-20 degrees as of late. Now if you can dealt with all that and get to the food, it makes up for it somewhat. Coming from the west coast it's a lot more pricey here for Ramen. Welcome back to business, Ren's! It is so nice to have you back in DC area in spite of Wheaton location. But it was certainly worth going there today for a bowl of real Japanese Ramen. I tried home made Gyoza, Miso Ramen and Tonshio Ramen this time. Gyoza (pork dumplings) was not as good as Toki U. but the Ramen at Ren's is much better than Toki U. Although I still prefer Ippudo's Hakata style Ramen (Akamaru Modern) with much deeper and dazzling tasting soup, I think Ren's is the best Ramen house available in DC area. After hearing about a truly authentic ramen place, I trekked to find this very small establishment. Thanks to the other yelpers I knew to arrive early and I knew there would be no parking. Needless to say I was very apprehensive about the shady street parking but stomach calls... At first I'm excited with the offerings, like the butter corn ramen I used to enjoy in Japan. However, after finding out that the ramen is expensive compared to Japanese standards, and additional "toppings" like "cha shu" are extra, I already was a little turned off. Well, I kept thinking to myself you get what you pay for, but I was shocked to learned that what I paid for was salt... and a lot of it. RR has a good thing going, the noodles were perfectly cooked and the toppings were fine. I just wish they laid off the salt. After my meal I felt like I took a sip from the ocean, and my BP was probably off the charts. Also, I felt really rushed since there were obviously only about 15 seats and familys had to wait at the door. Being used to the usual 30+ minute wait at the former Bethesda venue, my three friends and I were delighted to find that the restaurant was only about 2/3 full and pretty quiet at 8:30pm. We were expecting to be seated immediately, but the waiter looks around, and tells us that it will be a 20 minute wait. Perplexed, we asked him if it wouldn't be possible to move the adjacent two-person tables just 10 inches and make a four-person table. He says "I guess that will work." He then proceeded to place only two cups of water on the table. When we finally asked him for more water, he came back with only one more cup (which, thankfully, he realized later and brought over another cup). Deflecting the doubtful looks targeted at me for suggesting the place, I assured my friends that the ramen does, in fact, live up to its hype. We ordered the tonshio, miso, and two shoyus, two with corn and three with eggs. The tonshio with corn was the first to come out, except it was missing the corn. It would have been nice if he had taken the ramen and brought it back with the corn in the broth instead of bringing back a side dish with the serving of canned corn, but we gave him the benefit of the doubt and assumed that he understood that the integrity of the noodles is a critical factor in a good ramen and didn't want to keep us in wait. Too bad that the noodles turned out to be undercooked and a bit cold, and the eggs, usually perfectly done with just the right amount of moisture in the middle, were undercooked, runny, and worst of all, cold as if it had been in the fridge for a while. Sidenote, despite being the "salt broth," the tonshio actually turned out to be the least saltiest among the three broths we ordered. Perhaps it was because we had been subject to the leftovers of the day, but today's experience at Ren's fell far below the standards I had experienced at the Bethesda venue. One of the things I had enjoyed the most about Ren's was that they seemed to take great pride and care in the preparation of their main dish. I definitely like this ramen place. I guess it is worth the drive to Maryland for this. Since I am a vegetarian, I ordered the vegetable ramen and it was amazing. The soup base wasn't too salty and the ramen was perfect for the temperature. I do like it how they give you a big portion of noodles, but less side orders. I was really disappointed at the price though, it was ridiculous for side orders. 1.75 for two pieces of pork belly. This is definitely overpriced. When you want to have a mouth full of ramen, this is the place to go. We ordered the Tonshio (salt based) Ramen and it was excellent. The combination of the pork, bean sprouts, scallions, broth, and kelp mixed well for a satisfying mouth-feel. The noodles themselves were not overly soft, just at the right texture. I especially enjoyed the pork which was very tender and slightly fatty. Perhaps next time I will order a ramen with additional pork pieces. The broth itself was rich in flavor with a milky appearance to it. I enjoyed spooning the left over broth after I consumed all the contents of the ramen. Also just beware that the broth will be very hot when served to you initially so don't dive into the broth so hastily. I also had the fried rice since I wasn't totally full and also because the gyoza was currently sold out. This tasted like a good standard fried rice with some egg and pork, but I strongly suspect there was some additive to it to make it taste so savory. Been doing a ramen tour this summer, sampling all the ramen available in the DC metro area, and this one takes top position for the toppings. Chewy noodles are from Sapporo, Japan, too. Corn, fatty pork, and eggs - which are the most perfectly cooked eggs of all (dark orange-yolked farm eggs braised in soy sauce, I think, until the white is hard but the yolk is still halfway runny) . The tonshio (pork salt) broth was better than the miso broth, which started to taste salty after the first couple of minutes. Otherwise, the broth is decent, although nothing complex. But those toppings! And the broth is still better and/or more consistent than Toki Underground's or the one-dimensional tonkotsu broth sometimes found at Sushi Taro. Don't come between lunch and dinner times - there will be people inside, eating, but the kitchen will be closed. Unless you want said people to watch you walk away with confusion and severe disappointment on your face. UPDATE: The Bakudan (spicy) tonshio ramen daily special was literally the "bomb". Surprisingly spicy for Japanese food. 4.5 stars for that! The ramen was even better than last time I went, and the tonshio broth was rich and complex this time. A little on the salty side, but not like the miso broth I had before. Had it with fatty carmelized pork belly that disintegrated in my mouth, egg of course, and extra bamboo shoots for texture. When I think back to Toki Underground, this ramen is light years better, and you get much more food (don't get the gyoza; they're plain/nothing special, and you'll be overly stuffed). I have only one highly touted joint left to visit for ramen in McLean, and it's highly doubtful it will unseat Ren's as what I think is the best overall ramen available in the DC area. *For broth alone, I'd choose Satsuma in Bethesda - all broths taste distinctly different and are flavorful, complex, and not salty at all. Wanted to see if there was any place comparable to Toki Underground in DC and since I wasn't impressed with Sakuramen, we decided to take the trip up to Wheaton! Verdict: fantastic bowl of ramen, more on the traditional side. Worth eating if you are in the area. The place is small hole in the wall kind of joint (which are my fav). It was Sunday brunch time and the restaurant was filled to capacity so my group and I awkwardly waited by the door (which is the dining area as well). Efficiency is the name of the game because a server immediately gave us the menu and took our order. I ordered the miso ramen with a few add ons. When we were finally sat, it was then that we noticed there were specials written on the chalkboards. How devastating! The specials looked enticing! Nonetheless, the food came out promptly (they are fast!). My miso ramen was rich and savory. My boyfriend got the fatty pork add on which made his broth really oily. They weren't kidding around. The noodles were a great complement, perfectly al dente. They made note of the noodles being imported from Sapporo, Hokkaido... had me sold! My friend took me here claiming it has the best ramen. The place only takes cash so I had to go to a nearby CVS to get some cash back. The restaurant is the size of a living room and can only seat 8 small tables at most. If you arrive at the wrong time you will just have to wait until someone leaves. The menu has a bunch if noodles with different broth and some appetizers. What most people do is to order extra toppings (for additional cost of course) to the noodles because the basic noodles only comes with the flavored broh and a few pieces of very thinnly sliced pork, which really is not going to fill you up. If you think about it, the noodle and soup base cost $8-12 and adding all the extra toppings (different meat, corn, seaweed, veggies, eggs, fish cakes, etc.) to make a decent bowl of noodles will cost about $15-18, which really is not worth the price. (that includes minimal parking) I'm probably just bitter because i parked on the street and got a ticket. I went to the trouble of getting change and everything but i parked at the yellow 30 minute meters and forgot to refill the meter. Who can blame me? As soon as my tonshio w/ stewed fatty pork was placed in front of me i completely forgot about paying my parking. And really, that's the best compliment I can give to the food. This is one of the best ramen places in the DMV, and one of the only ones to serve tsukemen. The noodles and broth are levels above daikaya and jinya. The owners don't talk much, but you can clearly tell that they care and are dedicated to their work. read more

The chef here is a real jerk. It's bad enough that your culinary skill relies on pre-made, packaged noodles; your attitude is a major reason why this shack has been run into the ground. I've been to four ramen spots this month Toki Underground (#3), Daikaya (1), Chaplin (4) Rens (2) is a true contender! The broth is great a bit salty, the noodles were perfect The Sapporo topping (pork, garlic & bean sprouts) could have been caramelized & seasoned a bit more. But it was good! It took me a while to write this review because I want to be fair and address some of the negative reviews. I've had my share of ramen both in the US (DC, New York, and LA) and in Japan, for either both local and chain (like Ippudo, Jinya, and Santouka) ramen shops. I can comfortably said that when comes to Japanese ramen (at least their tonshio and miso ramen since those two are what I usually order), Ren's Ramen is very authentic. The broth and the noodles are very good. The egg is super spectacular!!!! Only few places that can challenge Ren's when comes to their soft boiled / soyed egg (Momosan to name a few for example). Some commented that the broth is too salty, oily, and etc. It's a Sapporo ramen style!!! It's like saying that butter burger is greasy (and there is such thing). If you have sampled enough ramen shops in Japan, you will see that Ren's is about the same as other establishments when comes to salty and greasy department. Most of negative reviews are contributed to their service and being too rigid about their rules. Some yelpers posted their infamous rules. While those rules are real and enforced (admittedly sometimes are raising eyebrows in the beginning ), I don't think many people realize that those rules are created and posted to protect their patrons especially the one that have been seated. Think about it for a moment. For example, patrons should not park their car in the dry cleaners parking lot. I bet you that in the past, several customers parked there and got their cars towed. Some reviewers commented that they needed to wait outside and will not be seated till everyone in the party is there. If you've been to Ren's than you would know that the place is very small so there is not that much space to hang around without making things less uncomfortable for customers that are already seating inside. By the way, if you've been to Japan, that how things are being done and what people are expected to do. Bottom line is that Ren's Ramen is my go to ramen place in the DMV area, and they actually care about their customers (although some of them are lost in translation). read more

Not the best ramen but not the worst either. Very tiny venue tucked away from Rt.193. Actually right before you hit the strip mall of WongGee Chinese I believe. Parking is nonexistent mostly, had to do street parking, so that could be a hassle if you were in high traffic time. Cash only which was the other caveat. I can echo with other reviewers' comment on soup base being too salty. I had the stamina ramen (probably not the best choice), mainly because I thought that was the all-in-one ramen (claimed to have sliced pork, egg etc), for all other ramen options, egg is extra. Boy I was wrong! Sliced pork was not the regular big slice of cha siu you find in almost every other ramen place, it was really small sliced, boiled pork. Noodle was good, soup too salty for me. Friends had the "light miso" option and said it were not as salty as the "regular miso" they had before. I was so happy that Ren's moved from Bethesda to Wheaton -- less than 10min from my office in SS!! So I came by for lunch last week absolutely starving. I ordered the miso ramen ($10.00) with additional toppings of corn ($0.75) and boiled egg ($2.00). The Good: The noodles were cooked so well -- soft and not chewy. I absolutely loved the boiled eggs. The yolk had a similar consistency to poached eggs, but I like these better because they won't accidentally break and mix in with the broth at inopportune moments, haha. The Bad: Who spilled the salt?! The broth, though nicely thick and full, was too salty to me. My two friends who accompanied me agreed too. I'm not sure if that's how it's supposed to be, but I left chugging water. The pork was good, but I would have liked some more of it! The Ugly: It killed my stomach.. mostly gonna blame my weak stomach for this, but it's all I had eaten that day, soooo.. yeah. I like their ramen here and there never an insane wait time which is awesome compared to the need of waiting for hours in places like Daikaya and Toki Underground. This is a really small shop so be prepared for some wait time if you were to show up during lunch/dinner rush. Also since it's a small shop it started to take people's phone number and call them when the spot open. You cannot wait in the restaurant for a table to open up. Make sense it's a small restaurant. Noodles range from $8 to $12 but it can get pricey if you like to add extra toppings like me. I love the eggs so I always add an extra order to my noodles. The cha-shu (pork belly) is really tender and yummy. Get it! Parking can be a pain as well since it's located in a very small strip mall. Small as in 3 restaurant and a dry cleaners. Whatever you do not park on the parking lot where the dry cleaners are located. They will tow your car if you park there. They have a regular ramen noodle menu where the Sapporo style ramen are served ( Shoyo, Miso and Tonshio). I personally prefer the Tonshio whenever I'm here. Look out for other specials that they have on their wall. They typically post some seasonal items on the wall. Oh and before I forget, CASH only. There's no atm inside the building but there's a few banks around the area if you need one. read more

Great Ramen place! CASH ONLY. the cash only was a little bit of a bummer, but no big deal. Bakudon Miso Ramen was a delicious bowl of noodles. After the first bite, I thought the heat might be too much, but it stayed the perfect level of spiciness. Noodles itself were the perfect balance of chewy and softness. Broth was a little too salty for my liking. The highlight of the bowl was definitely the toppings of fatty pork and egg. The fatty pork just melts in your mouth, and the egg was seasoned well. 4/5 Staff was also very friendly and helpful when asked questions about the menu. 5/5 The location of this tiny restaurant is a little tough because parking can be a hassle since it shares no more than a dozen spots between three restaurants. read more

I wanted to like this place, but it everything is too salty. The ramen at Tenmari in rockville is better. I got the Soy Sauce based one and my dad got the Salt based one. Yes both of the bases would make everything salty, but I did not expect it to be that salty. The pork in the ramen were super salty too. The add ons, were expensive in my opinion 75 cents for a spoonful or two of corn? I will be uploading a picture of the menu, so you guys can check out the prices. Parking is horrible here. People were parking behind each other, so then a person would have to get up and move their car if the person in front of them wanted to leave. read more
