We ate here because it was close to where we were staying and it has good reviews. It is a small and trendy spot with a vibrant atmosphere. We started with a glass of house red wine and a house white wine. Neither were good. Then we had the Cesar salad - the only salad they offer - and a pizza. The salad was ok but didn't really resemble a Cesar salad. I don't remember the name of the pizza but it was sauce and cheese with guanciale and basil. It is a 10" Neapolitan style pizza with the outer 2" being a chewy, but over charred crust. The sauce was a little overpowering and spicy. The Guanciale was not well rendered or crispy and the basil was not fresh but the dried herb. Overall, it was not bad - but it was not good either. Granted , we were a party of six but they seemed to be not particularly busy and we grabbed seats at the bar but still were not addressed and/or served. We arrived into Charleston late in the afternoon and my husband wanted to grab a beer a local brewery, but they didn't have food. So, I looked up the nearest food spot and found Renzo. We decided to pop in, but didn't make a reservation. Fortunately, we were offered space at the bar which was fine with us. The menu is small, but many options for different palates. My husband went for a local IPA beer and loved it, I went for the wine glass of the house. We started with the warm olives which were delicious. Then, we went for the Anchovie Grapefruit salad which blew my mind!!!! We also chose the Rock Shrimp Pizza which was excellent, bold, and tasty flavors. The waitress was nice to recommend a few other places in town that we loved. If we are ever back in Charleston, we're definitely stopping at Renzo's. My son brought me. We arrived at 5pm on Thursday to get the "happy hour" pizza. This Detroit-style pie has a serious crust, three days in its making. Muenster and Mozzarella, then "Grandma sauce" and Parmesan. Simple, but OMG and possibly the best pizza I have had! The house lager was good after the solstice's heat. The Brune draft after that hit all cylinders. Disclaimer: He works in the kitchen part-time. Our other dishes spoke of an informed, creative, and thoughtful mind and were well made. Silver sardines arched over grapefruit supremes with black pepper did not meet the "ethereal" suggested by the local paper's food review because I had sardines last June in a Prevezan harbor-alley outdoor restaurant that came with our ouzo that were just that. The shabazi pizza had an unfamiliar and fabulous pesto-like "zhug" that was over-strong tasted by itself but harmonious when blended with the lamb, flat parsley, chicory, yoghurt, etc. The chef came out and was warm and engaging. His agnolotti was beautiful and the sweet roundness of the honeyed sauce played well off the umami funk of the raw sheep's milk ricotta. I was back in Greece with the fire roasted octopus and baby red potatoes over a nutty Romanesco. Better actually! House-made ricotta had some encore role in the cardamom-caramel ice cream confection with its toothsome and tasty honeycomb crunch. Stopped in to Renzo today for their first ever pop-up bagel bar brunch. Service was buffet style served on the bar with a great selection of bagels, schmears, and toppings. Toasters were set up at the end of the bar near a self-serve water station. I went with the everything bagel with "classic" toppings of tomato, red onion, and capers. I added smoked trout which was a great combination. My only negative would be that the everything bagel was a little heavy on the poppy seed and light on garlic and salt. read more

The cutest little restaurant in downtown Charleston! This place is tucked away on Huger Street, but worth the find!! Note--during happy hour, you can only order from the happy hour menu! That being said, the food is amazing! We opted for the Detroit style pizza--and it was so good, we ordered another slice!! Our daughter was with us and lovessss popcorn--ironically we all couldn't keep our hands out of the bowl! Soooo good! Very nice drink selection, with happy hour drinks being really good! I had higher hopes for Renzo based on their social media and their proximity to my apartment, but I was sadly let down. To begin, their online menu didn't match their pizza ingredients when I called to place an order and when I called the person taking my order kept trying to get me to add on more things to my order. The cook on the pizza was great but the flavoring on the pizza was just alright. I got a cheese pizza with garlic. Especially at the cost of this pizza - so high for the size you get - I will probably not be buying pizza from here again. In the future, I do hope to try their wine happy hour, though. read more

I was pleasantly surprised and enchanted by the atmosphere, the relaxed but professional staff, and blown away by the absolutely incredible pizza. I ordered a really nice dry Chardonnay and enjoyed the Federer pizza - cream, garlic chives, swiss chard, mozzarella, topped with black pepper & honey. We went to Renzo on a Saturday night and it was pretty busy but they managed the tables well. We arrived about five minutes early and were told our table wasn't quite ready but we could have a seat at the bar while we waited. We ordered a couple glasses of wine and had a brief conversation with Brandon (the bartender). In addition to describing one of the unusual wines on the menu, he was very helpful explaining the menu and offering suggestions based on his favorites. Four stars for bar service. Our table was ready relatively quick so extra points for not having to wait long. We ordered an Italian sub salad which our waitress (sorry, I forgot her name) explained tastes like having an Italian sub sandwich except it's a salad and has no bread. She was right; it tasted just like one. Four stars for the salad, yum! We also ordered two pizzas. They're small, about ten inches. One of the pizzas was off the regular menu, the Wrath of Kahan. It had piquillo pepper sauce, medjool dates, chorizo, and motz. Excellent! Four stars. The other pie was a special that night, it had shaved brussel sprouts and a really creamy cheese that almost had the consistency of whip cream after it was cooked. While I'm writing this I'm thinking whip cream doesn't sound right for pizza however, trust me... it works! Brussel Sprout pie, 4.5 stars. The restaurant is pretty small so reservations are highly recommended. In fact, we walked in on another occasion without reservations but the wait was much longer than we wanted so decided we'd come back another time. So glad we did! There are some seats at the bar, I think maybe eight or ten but I think they were managing those too so that someone that was waiting got them before someone that just walked in. Everything was so fresh & hot right out of the kitchen. The rigatoni with Sunday gravy was to die for, i had it twice in a 4 day span lol. The sauce was different than your traditional pizza sauce, I can't quite describe it. I wouldn't order the roasted eggplant again. It was kinda mushy and over roasted, so it didn't have much flavor. However it was served with apricots which were so amazing. I also ordered a glass of the rosé and it was the best rosé I've ever had. We also got ice cream for dinner and it was amazing. We should go for the food's taste only, right? In this case these guys deserve a solid 4.5, but in reality, ambiance, service, quantity-to-price, etc. all play a roll. Hence, they deserve 2 stars (maybe 1). We are on vacation & were looking for a great place to eat Italian cuisine. The reviews were quite positive & photos were deceiving so we decided to give them a try. Unfortunately, the service was way below par, the food was overpriced, the atmosphere was mezzo mezzo, the restaurant was frigid and when we asked for some melted butter to go with my 11-year-old son's octopus, they said they couldn't do this (not sure why as the octopus was lacking in flavor & simply needed a touch of butter/flavor). Everything else was pretty tasty but the portions were quite small & prices were similar to a gourmet restaurant. In all, I would recommend that you save your time & find somewhere else to dine. We should have decided this the moment we saw the outside of the building. It looks more like a college groupie hangout (but way too pricey for them). Came here on a trip to Charleston last night. It's a little spot, but has a great atmosphere. The service was great and the food was very good also. We got the rigatoni, margarita pizza and the wood fried octopus's. I was surprised by the rigatoni - it had great flavor despite the watery sauce. Stopped in this morning for the bagel pop-up!! I really like this idea!! They offered several different styles/flavors of wood fired bagels, schmears, toppings and some conservas. They had some standard flavors but a few fun ones like hot Cheetos and potato chip! I had hoped for whitefish spread, but they did not have that. The servers are always super friendly and this morning was no different. Bagels were good but not great, the bottarga cream cheese was out of this world good and the toppings, especially the tomatoes, were also great. They did take reservations for parties of 4 or more, we got there early and were able to grab a seat but it seemed like a lot of the reservations were no shows it was on the pricier side, but a fun outing! read more

After reading the reviews, I really wanted to love Renzo. Unfortunately, we did not love our experience there. Our biggest disappointment was the service. The young man who waited on our table of 5 was not friendly. He was detached, impatient, and short with us all, especially my mother who had several questions. He barely checked in with us, and when he did, it seemed like we were bothering him. No smile. No friendly chit chat that wait staff usually engages in. We did not feel welcome or important. The food: the caesar salad and lemony potatoes were excellent. But we ordered 4 pizzas for our table. Every one of them came out burned. I get it that you serve wood-fired pizzas, but the crust of all 4 pizzas were BURNED and CHARRED. We had to pick off the burned crust in order to eat the pizzas because it tasted so bad. Randomly happened to go to Renzo last night. It. Was. Awesome!!!! Funny story though...my wife got a craving for the Farro Toast with Apricot/Horseradish Jam. So we bagged our original plans and headed to Renzo. And although the Farro/Apricot wasn't there, every single item was absolutely delicious and the staff was fantastic as well. Seriously, the Rigatoni with Sunday Gravy was exceptional...I would have licked the bowl and asked for another if my wife weren't with me! And the contrast of the crunchy lettuce, acidic dressing, roasted seeds, and slight creaminess of the Caesar was incredible. A perfect blending of flavors and senses. Reeaaalllly good.... My wife and I shared the Italian salad and it was more than enough for two. It was packed with great flavors and just enough heat from the peppers to make themselves known. I had the Johnny Tsunami and she had the Wrath of Kahan, neither disappointed. The ingredients on both were fresh and the dough had just enough chew to make each bite really enjoyable.
