Welcome to Tijuana, Mexico, a dynamic city across the southern border, with a burgeoning and magnetic, culinary destination scene. One of the most talked about restaurants is Caesars, yes, the birth home of the eponymous Caesars Salad. So I had to go, discover, indulge, and eat. The moment you walk in, you are transported to another place. Black and white floor tiles, well placed tables. white table cloths and napkins, immaculately groomed and dressed servers in black and white, and nostalgic Hollywood music playing in the background. I came here well planned, to sit over 2-3 hours, so I could take my time, absorb and digest this beautiful place. I debated over ordering the famous Caesars salad, which is prepared table side, and was happening at table after table. Since I was dining solo, I chose otherwise and opted for two appetizers and a main. In order, Oysters Rockefeller, Tuna Tartare and finally, Salmon Wellington. Both the appetizers were excellently presented (see my pictures) and had strong and bold flavors. You could savor the freshness in every bite. The tuna tartare arrived in dynamic and stunning style (see my pictures). The salmon Wellington, topped off the evening for me. The fish had depth and texture, well balanced in taste. The accompanying vegetables and baby potatoes perfectly cooked, the butter lemon sauce married well with the dish. Had to come here to the birthplace of Caesar salad at the start of my Tijuana food tour! The cool thing about getting the Caesar salad here is that the literally make it in front of you. They bring a cart and make the dressing right in front of you so you know it's fresh. And yes, it definitely has the anchovies. Service is great, no complaints here. We were a little late for our reservation, but we got seated without any wait. English is not an issue here either as the waiters speak English and the menus are in English as well. Absolutely exceptional experience. We were greeted by a friendly gentleman at the entrance, seated at a nice table and Oscar was our server. The restaurant was so clean and they even had toilet seat covers in the bathrooms! I've been to Mexico a lot and I've never seen that. Haha. They clear the tables and keep your drinks filled. The manager was walking around quietly scoping out each table to make sure it was clean and food presentation was good. Now the best part!! The food!!! There are no words to describe how incredibly delicious it was. We had the table side Caesar salad (a must) the French onion soup and the fettuccine carbonara. I had a tiramisu martini and my husband had the cucumber frozen margarita. Everything was sooooo good and we were blown away. We finished the night with a complimentary flan. It was perfect. a cool famous spot that we needed to stop by as first-time tourists in TJ LOL. as you already know, this is the restaurant where the original caesar salad was created (happy 100 years!!!) before it traveled across the border and became the americanized mess that i often avoid when picking my salads. we enjoyed the ambiance and service, as it still captured the vibes of the roaring twenties. the octopus wasn't mindblowing, but that was okay since we were doing a food crawl and had limited time for every stop anyway. i did really enjoy the flavors of the caesar salad and understand why it became a worldwide food. i wouldn't say i'd return again and again since it's a bit difficult to make trips down to TJ often, but it was definitely worth trying for the experience! read more

This started off as a bucket list restaurant, but immediately turned into a must visit every time we are in TJ! The menu is expansive and you really can't go wrong with anything! The caesar salad of course is always a must, and the table side show is such a fun experience. The service is quick and friendly, although you do usually have to wait to get seated. I've been wanting to try this restaurant for a very long time!!! And yesterday was the day I finally got to try it out. I literally came across this restaurant by accident. It was the universe stepping in! We were on revolution st in TJ. And I was telling one of my friends how I wanted to try this restaurant. I literally turn my head and there it was. I was like... omg! This is it. So we had to stop in! They are know for their famous Caesar salads done tableside. And it did not disappoint! The food was amazing. The ambience of the restaurant felt like I was stepping back in time. It was so old school. I loved it. Like I said, they are know for their Caesar salads. They make the dressing from scratch and right in front of you, tableside. It was so good light and fresh. My daughter ordered the spaghetti Bolognese. That spaghetti was so good. The flavors exploded in our mouths. My son got the lamb steak. The meat was so tender and soft. It was well seasoned. He devoured it! They also give you bread with an olive spread. Really good! My fiance and I were in TJ for a doctor's appointment and my fiance highly recommended we stop by this place for the original Caesar salad. we got here a little before they opened at 12pm and they already had a small line starting to build. although they sat us almost immediately. It might be a good idea to make a reservation before coming here. We went right at the opening time and we could see slowly the space was getting busy. The entire dining space wall is filled with old pictures, reminiscent of Cesar Cardini. Can't believe this place is 100 years old. Our waiter, Antonio took great care of us. The bone marrow was sumptuous with their homemade sauces. We had to TRY the original Cesar's salad by the table. Antonio made fresh dressing and prepared our salad, calling out each ingredient. This is the place that the Caesar salad was invented and loved how it was made table side. The wait time to get in was like 40 minutes and was well worth it! The servers were attentive and awesome and food came out in a timely manner. The ambiance and decor was delightful and the walls were filled with history and memories. Amazing! Look I've had plenty of Caesar Salads but this one was not only the OG but out of this world. My friend and I stopped by just for the salad. All the times I've been in TJ and never stopped. The service was a little slow but it was busy with birthday parties. We only ordered the salad but the menu looked good for the other food. We sat in the patio area. The servers & the host were friendly and welcoming. It was such a treat to watch the waiter make the salad in front of you. You can order the lettuce chopped or whole. I've had many Caesar salads in my life, but now that I've had the original I'm not sure I can eat any other. This was by far the absolute best Caesar salad I've ever had. The flavors were perfect. Caesar's Restaurant is known for being the birthplace of the Caesar's Salad, and this iconic fine dining institution had an upscale, white tablecloth atmosphere with a dressed up waitstaff. The menu was eclectic, offering dishes from Mexican and multiple European cuisines (e.g., French, Italian, Spanish, British). The must-order item was the Caesar's Salad, which was prepared tableside. The server expertly created the dressing by mixing together numerous ingredients including a raw egg, lemon juice, olive oil, anchovies, pepper, garlic, and more. He then tossed in whole leaves of romaine lettuce and set them on a plate, before topping them off with crunchy round croutons and grated Parmesan. This Caesar's Salad was unlike any version I've had before--the dressing was umami, garlicky, and lemony and was completely different than the generic ranch dressing that comes with most Caesar's anywhere else in the world. The remaining sauce on the plate was perfect for mopping up with the basket of soft white bread that came at the table, and the bread also went nicely with the green olive tapenade, their signature complimentary appetizer. For my main course, I ordered the Salmon Wellington, a unique dish made with a fillet of salmon wrapped in puff pastry with a layer of duxelles mushrooms, and served with a creamy, lemony beurre blanc sauce and vegetables on the side. For dessert, we had the Ate con Queso, which were triangles of manchego cheese topped with quince paste, honey, fig jam, and apple slices. Overall, the food here was nicely presented and delicious. I finally was able to enjoy this Tijuana vintage restaurant even when I lived there for most of my life. Caesar's is famous for creating the world wide know. "Caesar's salad". They make it from scratch right next to your table, quite an experience! We also ordered some calamari ( decent but not fantastic) and a pesto pasta that was delicious. I ordered a flavored Margarita but it tasted like cheap syrup. A little overpriced for what you get. The service was a little on the slow side and the ambiance was quite relaxed. read more

We walked by and were intrigued by the history of this place. I mean who hasn't had a Caesar salad right? We decided to get a table and we were immediately seated. We weren't helped for twenty or so minutes. Every time the waiter came he would be gone for long periods of time. It gets super busy on a Saturday for dinner, so make sure you come a little early. We got seated outside. We ordered: oysters, bone marrow, beef carpaccio, 2 table side salads, and the octopus dish. The best of course is the Caesar salad. Made fresh! Get large and share, but if you have 4 you'll need 2 larges. Add extra anchovies if you can. The bone marrow is a must! It was so delicious. The oysters good, beef carpaccio needed salt and the octopus was ok. For entrees we got: carne asada victors, lamp chops, t bone lamps, and the ravioli. The lamp chops were delicious! It was cooked and seasoned right, no gaminess. The carne asada was good too. Only the ravioli wasn't good. As for dessert we got one of each, flan, Creme burlee, crepes and chocolate mouse cake. The best of of course their flan. Crepes were good too. Creme burlee was over cooked so had scramble egg consistency. Chocolate mouse was decadent. We also got a bunch of cocktails. Great cocktails! I will come back to Tijuana for this restaurant. We stayed in TJ for the weekend to try all their food. 3/4 people in our group had been here (it was my first time) and this was their 2nd or 3rd time going so I knew it had to be good. We didn't have reservations and arrived around 7pm on a Friday. We waited about 5mins or less for a table for 4. The interior has the feeling of an old swanky restaurant and all the food was amazing. The service was good as well, our waiter took our drink order right away and out food order not longer after. None of us spoke spanish, but everyone was very nice and tried their best to understand our English/little spanish we knew. For drinks, I went with an espresso martini, which was really good! Then They start you off with a bread basket that comes with an olive tapenade that was delicious. Next came the tuna tar tar that had a very fresh taste to it. The appetizer we all had been waiting for was the Caesar salad!!! They bring a cart over and make it right in front of you and taste like perfection. We ordered a lot of food, the bread with olive oil and herbs is good but can be done without since you get free bread, the bone marrow is a must!! Comes on top of a little corn bread (think like masa) and you scrape the marrow on to it and put the sauces on top, this was one of my favorites. The escargot was another favorite of mine because I love escargot and it tasted like delicious garlic butter. The calamari is good, but you can get calamari at that level at most places in my opinion, octopus is made in a delicious red sauce that you must scrape with the bread. The ribeye melts in your mouth, we were so full but it was too good not to eat and we even tried the crème brûlée. This was good, but I was so full that I couldn't really enjoy it. Ambiance - 5 stars. Old school and classy. One of the highlights was being serenaded with three songs from two singers with guitars. Their voices were beautiful. Service - 5 stars. All male waiters with dress slacks, shirts and ties. We had a few of them waiting on us, all of whom were friendly and gracious. They were all calm and we didn't feel rushed. Food - 5 stars. The bone marrow appetizer was divine. It was rich and buttery. The condiments (i.e. small amounts of beef gravy, hot sauce, salt and lime juice) elevated this dish. The Caesar salad was made fresh and all the ingredients were well balanced (I.e. anchovies we're not overpowering.). I had the salmon wellington. The puff pastry was light and flakey and there was a good amount of salmon. The beurre blanc sauce was creamy and complimented the fish. Food is average 6 out of 10 Service subpar 4 out of 10 Hosted friends for dinner Saturday night and they wanted to try Caesar's original restaurant. Somewhat crowded at 7:30pm and told the wait was over 30 minutes. But I quickly noticed people slipping the doorman tips and they got seated within minutes. So I do the same and less than three minutes we had a table! Whatever, it's Mexico. Of course we tried the Caesar salad. The menu has two offerings: one made in the kitchen the other with an up charge for preparation table side. I requested four Caesar salads and pointed to the lower price on the menu because I did not see the point of having it made tableside. Regardless of my request, the waiter came out and made it at the table and we were charged an extra $1.50 per salad....So be it. I just wanted my guests to be happy. Salad was overdressed however. They also used raw eggs, which in Mexico makes me nervous because there, eggs are not pasteurized nor refrigerated. We also ordered escargot and spicy octopus to share. Both done well. Knowing from experience escargot come preprocessed in a can and are stuffed into sanitized shells with herb laden butter. I was pleased with the flavors of the butter. The baby pulpo or octopus was delicious as well. Our main courses were 2 prime rib dinners (both way too salty to eat) and 2 pasta dishes. After our hot appetizers were cleared the ladies excused themselves to use the restroom. They asked the waiter where it was and left the table. Before they even got to the restroom our entrees were delivered. I told the server that the ladies would not return for another 5 minutes or so and to please keep the food from getting cold. He disappeared and never came back. That made me mad. Typical gringo disrespect. Our food was not served very warm to begin with and by the time the ladies returned the food was barely warm at all. Not to put a damper on the evening nothing was said about the food or service. Not once did our waiter return to check on us. No one ate more than half of their meals either. Poor service and unprofessional. But the kicker came when I asked for the check. I paid the bill in pesos with just enough to cover the amount and was planning to leave a cash tip. But since there was no check holder to put the tip in, I thought I'd make the waiter wait on me while I excused myself to use the restroom. It is I'll-mannered to let your invited guests see how much the check is and the tip. While I was away the waiter had the nerve to tell my Mexican friends in Spanish that I was expected to leave a minimum 10% tip for service. My friends said he made them think I was a cheap gringo and that I was not going to tip him! So when I returned and heard this, I was really put off. How unprofessional and embarrassing. When the waiter was passing by I grabbed his arm and in perfect Spanish told him how rude and unprofessional he was. To embarrass me in front of my Mexican friends like that because I am a gringo has no place in a fine dining establishment and he should be demoted or terminated. My friends said the 2 floor managers were listening as were a couple of tables nearby. Good for them! I hope that the owners read this and take the appropriate actions necessary. Tourists are the heart of their business. The color of our skin or our nationality should not matter. Treat all people with respect, especially in the service industry. read more
