You may not like something but if it is authentically prepared, that trumps personal taste every time lol. Grilled meats. Stews. Some flavor profiles reminiscent of Iranian cooking. Go with three friends and sample a little of everything. There will be plenty to take home. Choose some classic stews (they can help recommend). Fahsa is a good option. This was my first time visiting Rataj Persian Cuisine, and I was treated like family from the moment I walked in. The hospitality here is unmatched--Gabriel and Muhammad provided excellent service, making the experience even more enjoyable. I'm impressed that the lamb is NOT 'gamey'. The lamb liver was flavorful and tender, cooked to perfection, and the hummus was incredibly fresh, with a smooth texture and rich taste. The rice was ok, and the bread too. When the time comes to pay for food, we have been surprised. The owner girl didn't want to give us a pre-check, she showed only the total amount for payment. When my husband paid and left tips already we found the SERVICE FEE of $9(?!) in the receipt and we were charged for bread $3 instead of $2 in the menu. As a bonus, they charged us for a CARD PAYMENT of $2.22(3%) as well!! I don't know maybe is a normal business practice in Yemen to do business like that!? I don't like to be "treated" like that! $13 is not a big deal, but for what?! It was our first and last time here, never again!‼ read more

Retaj was very clean and the waitstaff was nice and accommodating when we got there and then forgot about us in the end (when we asked for to go containers they never brought us any until 10 min later when a worker came to ask us if we needed something...). They do not offer water (you have to buy it) and they don't have knives (only forks and spoons, which may be a cultural thing but it's very hard to cut a lamb chop with those items...). I ordered the Mandi which came with rice, vegetables, and lamb chops cooked with saffron. The portion was huge. The lamb was juicy and the rice was super fragrant and flavorful. My friend got the Fahsa which was like a stew you dip the bread in and the bread she got with her meal was like a meal itself (needed its own bread table). Overall the meal was very good and I enjoyed my first Yemeni food experience. The service and experience however was lacking. Maybe a to go order is the way to go so I can not be thirsty and be able to eat my food with proper utensils. read more

I'd been meaning to try this place for ages but today was the day. I got the fresh mint lemonade, baba ganoush, Okra, some yummy veggie dish I couldn't pronounce and the amazing banana dessert. Being a pescetarian I was thrilled to get middle eastern food where the vegetarian dishes don't feel like an afterthought. Came here for the first time with my husband after driving by and seeing a new Yemeni place. Muhammad was our waiter and helped us pick out the lamb fahsa (the meat was very tender and flavor was perfect) as well as the lamb liver, because we wanted to skip out on rice dishes. Sometimes middle eastern food can be a bit oily but i was pleasantly surprised when our food did not have excess oil-it was super satiating yet didn't make us feel heavy once we were done. Food came out quick and Muhammad kept checking on us and made sure everything was to our liking. Also, the restaurant is clean and ambiance is nice . Highly recommend Retaj and will be returning inshaAllah. read more

If I could give more than 5 stars, I absolutely would! Retaj Yemeni Cuisine is hands down one of the best dining experiences I've ever had. Easily in my top 10 best meals of all time. The Fahsa Chicken was out of this world--rich, flavorful, and perfectly tender, paired with fresh, hot bread that was so good it should be illegal. And don't even get me started on the house-made mint lemonade--refreshing, bright, and the perfect complement to the meal. Make sure you save room for dessert because their menu has the perfect sweet treats to round out an already incredible experience. To top it all off, our waitress was so sweet and attentive, making the whole meal even more enjoyable. The service, the atmosphere, and, most importantly, the food--everything was perfect! read more

I drove all the way from San Antonio for this authentic Yemeni restarant that everyone was raving about, and it certainly lived up my expectations! The food was fresh, hot, and absolutely delicious. The service was quick and the staff was super friendly! I would recommend ordering the Fahsa with malooh/rashoosh and the lamb Zarbian. Excellent food! Was picking up rental car next door and ordered the lamb chops and the chickens plates. I assume that the lady at the register was the owner, and was very kind and patient as I had never had Yemeni food. My wife and daughter loved both dishes. We will definitely be back! read more
