Retro Fitness Gym Whippany Place details To clarify: I had no issue with the gym itself. My contract was with the Retro Fitness location in Florham Park. I signed up with that specific location, and everything was fine until I suddenly received a message that the gym was shutting down. This announcement came just days before the doors were permanently locked, leaving me with no prior notice or proper communication. While I liked the Whippany location, I chose not to go there because it was too far from my home. When I tried to cancel my membership, I followed instructions given by the gym staff. They told me to call ABC Financial. I did exactly that. However, when I called, the representative,who appeared to be based overseas,told me to go back to the gym and cancel in person. Since I had already taken the steps I was advised to take, and the Florham Park gym was closed, I opted to cancel via email instead. I also sent a physical letter by regular mail, but that letter was returned to me weeks later. I made every effort to cancel my membership properly. Despite this, a few weeks ago I received a notice from a collection agency, First Credit Services, stating that I owe $145. I also learned that this amount was reported on my credit report. I attempted to contact First Credit Services for clarification, but I still waiting for their review. I find it deeply disappointing that after being a paying member for five years, I am now facing credit damage over a relatively small amount.especially when I followed all the instructions given to me at the time. Can someone from management please review this case and advise on how to resolve the issue? I believe this situation is unjust and should be corrected. read more

the layout is terrible. there is WAY too many machines packed into a narrow space, but not nearly enough benches (maybe 4?) or options for lifting. The area by the weight rack is too small for any more than 4-5 people to lift at a time. there's also only 2 stairmasters, both of which are honestly hazardous (even when they're off the stairs move, so no safetu lock) and there treadmills are basically on the back wall with little to no space to walk behind them (literally 1 person can walk past them at a time). save yourself the frustration and go somewhere else. read more

Terrible location. Zero parking. Out of touch owners on a power trip. Machines constantly broken. Two stair masters in the place and rarely are both working. Showers constantly without hot water. Seriously. Dead of winter you'll be taking an ice cold shower. Don't waste your money. 24 Hour Fitness in Whippany opens at the end of June!!! Full transparency. Today I posted on my Instagram that five machines were out of order. The owner called me and told me my membership was terminated for slander. SLANDER. The definition of which is a FALSE MISPOKEN STATEMENT. It was a factual video of all of the machines with signs.... Very sad to see a business owner handle a situation this way. He could have asked me to take the post down and reassured me that the machines would be fixed ASAP. But instead he called to bully me and canceled my (PREMIUM) membership. I would strongly caution against choosing this location as your home gym. PS.... Frank, the fact that I was a loyal member for years is exactly why your reaction was so alarming. Your recap is sweet, but it is just not what happened. You called me and started yelling 'What are you doing? I'm trying to run a business here! You are messing with my profession!' And I said, 'Actually this is extremely unprofessional... you looked up my number to call and yell at me? There are five machines out of order, what did I do wrong?' You said, 'This is slander! You can't post that!'... I said, 'Do you know the definition of slander?' You said ,'THATS IT. You aren't welcome back at Retro. Your membership is terminated!' So yes... I hung up. I recently joined this gym. I been with planet fitness for years. Overall hummus very clean . Diverse range of equipment. Only issue I see is the sanitizing. It is far more superior at planet fitness. There are not enough cleaning stations. I do not see anyone wiping machines down after use. Or staff sanitizing spray the machine. At planet they are way more into sanitizing everything especially with CIVId out there. Maybe owner will make changes. read more

If you want to relax after a workout with a cold water, shower, this is the place! Most likely you'll end up having to change your workout plan for the day because most (if not all) of the equipment you need is broken. It really keeps you on your toes. And if you complain about it, management will cancel your membership and harass you behind everyone's back! Who needs to suck it up sometimes and just apologize and fix the problem when you can avoid the problem altogether! read more

This place is so horrible people who gave 1 star below me are 100% right, a lot of the equipment is broken. I complained to the owner and he got mad at me to the point that was Yelling he also accused me that i use to many WIPES... how pathetic my membership was terminated because i told them that i was going to report their location to CORPORATE. owner is so unprofessional Retro Fitness Of Parsippany just went out of business now it's their turn to shutdown - Their Showers are awful and broken - Summer no cold water / Winter no Hot water... - Staff is nasty not greeting people ( good morning, etc, etc.) - Both owners are very rude ( wife and husband ) Do not go to this place. Not bad... This is a decent gym with a lot of equipment and they offer classes with really great instructors. My biggest complaint is that there are never enough squishy mats (I see loads of people just doing their crunches and planks directly on that red astroturf but I guess I'm too fancy for that). Also, it's a small space and I feel like there are just too many machines in that space; it feels cramped. Some of the treadmills are touching so when I run on one, I basically create an earthquake because I'm shaking the adjacent treadmills with my giant body because I'm an elephant. Also, they're constantly running out of the little wipes that they provide for cleaning your own sweat off of the machines. I mean, seriously, why don't you order extras so this never happens? Overall though, it's decent and it's super close to my house so I can't complain too much. read more

Great facility!!!! Love the staff. The facilities had nice olympic style bars with both rubber and octo plates which make powerlifting and/or lifting easy. The smoothie bar is relatively cheap and made fast. They have a nice supplement stack with a wide variety of supps for the shakes. read more

I've been going to Retro Whippany for about 3 years. The trainers are knowledgeable, staff is friendly, facility is clean. I wish there were more early morning classes. Other than that, it's a great place to workout. Special shout out to Danielle R, Stephanie A, Kim, Celeste, Danielle V. All awesome trainers/instructors. Well, this review has been in the making far too long and now it's time to 'fess up. I have to say it's one of the very best gyms I've ever had the opportunity to be a member. My reasons are as follows in no particular order:- 1. The staff and owner are soooo pleasant and kind. 2. The are knowledgeable and very informative. 3. The gym is immaculately kept and fully equipped. 4. Cleansers and sanitizers and placed in different areas in the gym, so there is no excuse not to clean-up after yourself. 5. The Zen Room with the massage chairs are top notch. It's a "must try" :) 6. Membership fees for all the amenities offered is hard to beat. 7. The bathrooms are nice and clean and one of the best smoothie bars around because the variety is so vast. 8. The Trainers are knowledgeable and respectful. 9. I highly, highly recommend this gym, not because I'm a member, but because it IS one of the very best in town. I'm so glad to be a part of the Retro Family. Sign up today. I just transferred here from another Retro. I took two spin classes so far and loved them! I'm happy I made the change

I really like this gym. I've been a member of two others in the area and this is my favorite. The staff is friendly and the gym is always clean. The shakes are good and really cheap! $4/16 oz. I think the membership fee is a fair price for what they have to offer. I'll eventually upgrade and take the classes. This location is much more organized and I doubt I'll have the issues here that I had at the Fairfield location. I only wish they were a little bigger. Like all gyms, I hate where the open abdominal area and free weights are. It's always so intimidating and I wish there was more privacy. read more

Retro Fitness's Whippany is a great affordable local gym option. The layout is spacious, the gym is clean, and you don't usually have to worry about overcrowding. They have all of the equipment you need, and any needed repairs are made in a timely fashion. The staff is welcoming, helpful and after a few times here they will know your name. At this price point you could not ask for a better, more welcoming gym. This is retro is a great lower cost gym that should meet all of your workout needs. read more

The best retro in the area. Its huge, clean, tons of parking, the staff is super friendly and they offer a wide variety of classes with great instructors. The only downfall is if its your first time coming here, its hard to find. They should put a sign near the entrance if possible. Great tanning stand up booths and smoothies, too. Gym equipment is top level and all new and I've been to many gyms. Plenty of benches. Two Smith machines. Plenty of shoulder machines. Four universal racks. Tons of dumb bells, kettle bells and a neat rack of barbells. Tons of cardio of all kinds except a rower. Additional cardio room in movie room and class room which can be used for personal cardio classes with computerized movie screen class. It's clean. The husband/wife management team are friendly, professional and always helpful. Class schedule has increased along with membership. Have Childcare. Whenever I've had a suggestion, they jump right on it. Protein smoothies are good, but a little pricey. The monthly membership price is nice. Great gym. Highly recommend. read more

The owner was unwilling to honor the free trial for a day due to not having an updatedproof a record as a military member. A shame a military ID would not work. Not about the money as I paid more to Uber there than the daily pass. Frank--thanks for the response. Please trust this is not about the money. My Uber ride there just one way exceeded the amount of the daily rate. I tried to explain to you why military members may not have proof of residence even after moving somewhere as they are waived from having to change their home of record, drivers license, etc. If this point was acknowledged, I would have likely worked out. Instead you made irrational arguments about restaurants not handing out free food and other false comparisons. Maybe others would have just paid to workout but I couldn't stomach it after feeling patronized. read more

Retro use to be a Great and Awesome GYM, But they switch there equipment from Hammer Strength to cheap Chinese made workout equipment, that does not focus on your Muslces , but it hurst your bones and ligament, with is not good for bodybuilding or powerlifting. If you find a old Retro with Hammer Strength, never leave. read more

I used to have a least favorite retro that was in wayne. This is definetly now the worst on the list due to a teriible meathead of an owner. I understand that this is a franchise but the head of the company needs to set a standard for how the owners behave. I didnt rerack the weights after one of my sets and was doin a super set on another machine when the owner who was working out came up to me and said to re rack my weights. I agreed then went to another machine with the intent to return to finish my set. But yet again the owner came up to me a said i was disrespecting him and said he would throw me out if i didnt rerack . Never has an owner threatened me considering all the buisness i have to retro everyday ( i buy drinks and protein bars every day) disgusting excuse of an owner read more

Been going to this retro for years and it has always been a very clean gym. The staff and owners have always been very professional and am always greeted with a smile at the front desk. Any issues that I have ever brought to the owners attention have been taken care of in a timely manner. For what you pay for and the services you receive at this gym and location cannot be beat. Today 02/25/2019: by all means this is a wonderful retro fitness gym, my experience here today though was not. I got to the retro fitness and it was dark inside, lights out but there were individuals working out at the machines and staff members behind the desk. Walking up I asked, and they confirmed that the power was out - and had been out for at least an hour prior to my arrival. I was offered to leave and go to another gym (who really wants to try and find another retro gym near by when there is only so much time in a day?) or to continue and walk through and workout. I chose to workout, thinking how I am only doing body weight and machines anyway and none of that is effected by not having proper lighting. Using the bathroom in the dark was difficult but manageable. The problem came about 30 minutes into my workout I hadn't brought water, so I went to the fountain but there was no power and thus no fountain working. I went to the female staff member, who had welcomed me and asked for some water. She replied how only the bottles are available and those are a dollar and some odd cents. I just couldn't believe that. Then I realized, maybe they don't know, so I returned to the counter, and informed a younger male employee that the fountains are not working. After being informed of the fountains not working, and with the inconvenience of the power outage that they could not spare a bottle of water. In my frustration and thirst, in a demeaning manner I said "It just seems rather ridiculous." And the young male employee's response was too say "We'll your free to leave if you'd like." It seems poor treatment to your clientele and also as a poor health decision to not offer the water with clientele sweating and encouraged to sweat and lose fluid/hydration by doing so. I just know there are definitely clientele that are taking preworkouts or amino acids, of which are promoted and sold by the retrofitness itself, that increase heart rate and effect the body to use more energy and not having water available to especially these people is dangerous. As well, there are many individuals that do have health circumstances already putting them at risk. I just don't believe that water at a gym which requires you pay for membership, should also require the member to buy the water. read more

I had the unfortunate pleasure of starting my retro experience in the Middletown retro. I assumed the standard was a dirty, crowded, steroid using, meathead filled, weight dropping, sex moaning, gym that stunk of sweat that had more people standing around filming themselves lift than actually re-racking their weights. I moved and found this retro and was thrilled to find that none of these things are present at Whippany. The gym is never crowded and has top notch equipment. I have yet to hear a weight drop, see a girl get harassed, clear a bar of plates that were left on, or had my hands resemble Casper from an avalanche of chalk. The ownership is nice and the employees are always helpful and attentative. The cleaning crew does a great job as I have never cringed in the gym, locker room, or restroom. I will say the first time is hard to find and they do close fairly early for a gym (11 on most days...but who I am kidding I'm not going their past 8 anyway.) I highly recommend this gym to anyone who wants a solid, no frills weight cardio and workout plan. read more

This gym is an excellent place for newbies and avid gym goers alike. Since I'm part of the former group, I was pleased with the friendly welcome I got when I signed up. The owner and his staff answered all of my questions patiently and fully. I have taken a variety of their classes and they are all very accommodating of my beginner status. The class instructors always give clear modifications if you aren't yet up to full out participation. I am especially impressed with Stephanie's weight training class. She gives clear instructions, makes it an excellent experience for all levels in the class and has a super positive attitude. You can tell she loves what she does. Facility, bathrooms and lockers are extremely clean as well. Wonderful first experience. read more

I have been going to Retro in Whippany on Jefferson rd. for almost 2 years. It was easy to sign up online when I was ready to get in shape. The owners are amazing and are always friendly. There are so many reasons I love going to this Retro...its always super clean, well lit and they have childcare. The caregivers are sweet and are happy to see my daughters each time. I see the same friendly faces there again and again. Last year, I signed up for a trainer and have also seen fantastic results. I love going to the gym. It's my "happy place," and would encourage anyone that's looking to sign up at a gym to visit Retro in Whippany and see the owner Frank and his awesome wife. HM read more

This gym is awesome. It is super clean and the staff is very friendly. One of the other main reasons why I'm giving it 5 stars is because the owner, Frank, is such a great guy. He is present in the gym and makes you feel welcome. He has an open door policy so you can ask him for help with any machine. He is extremely knowledgeable and willing to help anyone. He even trains with his family there and that is so nice to see. I think this gym is the best Retro around and a big reason why it's so great is because of Frank. I've been to several Retro Fitness locations, and other fitness clubs, and this is by far my favorite. It is well sized, well equipped, always clean, and the staff is always polite. I even moved homes and live closer to a different Retro location but drive the extra distance to come here. Strongly recommended. read more

I like this gym very much. It is basic but good and the price is right and that is what I am looking for. My only issue is with some people attending the gym that believe that they can reserve machines and come out of nowhere when you try to use a machine saying, oh, I am using it. LOL. This gym is clean and the staff is friendly. I have never experienced a problem here. Cleanliness is very important to me and this gym really strives to gain that. I often see the staff around the gym cleaning the equipment and floors. They also make smoothies very well (my fav is the berries and chocolate). The also provide weighted bands, you just have to ask for them. I would definitely recommend this gym. Very pleased with management and the sales associates, employees behind the front desk. Always super friendly! Classes I have taken so far have been great! And the quiosk in the group x room is clutch! Also the air quality in that room is great! I can breath and the fans feel great! The owners are so wonderful and accommodating! There have not been any machines broken or out of order. They always have the kids club nicely organized and toys wiped down with lysol which makes me feel confident my son won't be getting sick ;) they have tanning lotion and packets and my favorite post workout drink Isopure! I am very happy with the whippany Retro! And so grateful to have transfered there! Only downside... small water is $2, just try and remember to bring your own!! The lockerroom is big!!! & the bathroom and showers are always tidy. Love this gym! read more

I train at this Retro whenever I am in the area and, having trained at around 10 Retros in NJ and Pa, I can easily state that this gym is the best. Tons of equipment and cardio, huge space and immaculate. This gym is fairly new so the true test will be if this high level can be maintained. read more

Came here instead of the home gym. Did not like that there was a message to request a doctors note because I have asthma. (I don't need a rescue inhaler.) Facility is clean, even the showers & toilets. They use air fresheners & have good ventilation. A staff goes around cleaning machines. Place is organized. Good machines. Two squat racks.
