I sent her some reference images of a barn swallow and she, as they say, understood the assignment! She custom mixed some colors and they turned out gorgeous. Again, another lovely experience here. Met some of the other artists and chatted with them while I was getting worked on and loved seeing everyone's different styles. Obsessed with Retro Row Ink -- Andrew, in particular. Ughh I love him! He's so warm and immediately made me feel completely cozy and comfortable. My little brother has a few tattoos by Andrew and only has the very best things to say, plus his tattoos and the line work look SO so good... so when my sister and I recently visited said brother in Long Beach, we had to put Retro Row Ink on the agenda. This tattoo shop is one big open room with maybe 8-10 artist-stations throughout. Everything is super clean, colorful, and welcoming, and of course there's tons of beautiful artwork by the resident tattoo artists across the walls. You gotta browse and enjoy all the different talent! My sister got a couple small tattoos, some script and then her daughters' initials worked into a tattoo she already has. Andrew sent us a link to a website where we could search and select fonts, but if you need ideas your tattoo artist will definitely have them! I like the idea of tiny tattoos on my hands/fingers, just one tiny step at a time, hahah. I decided to get a single teensy star, which I now call the North star. It looks like a classic, Christmassy twinkle star... or what a single light looks like in the dark when you have an astigmatism, ha. ANYWAY, it's the perfect tiny little sparkle and Andrew was able to draw it with the tiniest, finest little lines. I love it. I'll see how it heals and how the ink takes to my hand-skin, but I'm already making plans for my next Long Beach trip so I can see Andrew again! read more

I just recently completed my eyebrow session with Chelsea, who works out of the shop, and you should too. She listened to what I wanted and offered her suggestions as well, and we created the perfect shape and color. I had existing work that had faded almost to a shadow, and she was able to work with that. There wasn't any color distortion between the two pigments either. She took her time mapping out my face and what shape would work & then we got to work. She is super chill, the shop has AC and PARKING in the back FOR FREE!! Her prices come with a 6-8 week touch up. STEPH JUDGEMENT: Professional, welcoming, and reasonable. I came here to get a second pair of lobe piercings done and it was a great experience. Ash (@fairywithaneedle) is their resident piercer, and you should check out her instagram to see her schedule, as she is not there all the time. My first ear piercings were done in a Korean hair salon in Garden Grove with a piercing gun when I was like 10, and my second one when I was in 7th grade by a friend with an ice cube and a sewing needle. Needless to say, this was a vastly improved experience. I found the shop to be clean and pleasant, and they had a QR code link to a release form I filled out on my phone. After a short wait, I had a consultation and jewelry selection with Ash, and was led to a piercing station. She talked me through every step, and was very gentle and caring--absolutely no surprises. It was quick, with a minimal amount of pain, and Ash went over the aftercare with me thoroughly before sending me on my way. She also sent me an aftercare instruction sheet to my phone. For the piercing and jewelry it was a little under $140 before tip, which I realize is a lot more than a mall piercing, but I thought it was worth it to know I was seen by a caring, experienced piercing professional with immaculately clean tools who takes pride in her work. I did some research and found Julia, who used to be at Calavera in Pedro, but just moved over to Retro Row a few days prior. I contacted her on IG and she was able to not only fit me into her schedule, but was extremely detailed and helpful throughout the process. Julia and the other artists were very professional and courteous which I really appreciated. I have loved the work I've gotten from other artists before, but Julia's customer service was something I had yet to experience! When I was done, she made sure I got to my car safely and even got a water bottle for a homeless man nearby. My tattoo artist was Xavier and I also got to meet another artist / his friend Mikie, who were great company during the sesh! I originally came in for one of Xavier's flash designs, and he decided it would be best to redraw the original design to fit my anatomy, which then led him to pitch me the idea of freehanding a similar concept, a skull centipede, and I said LETS DO IT. Today after last minute deciding to get a tattoo, I walked into Retro Row and my expectations were immediately exceeded. I was greeted by Cody at the door, who had a great cheery attitude and they made me feel very comfortable, answering all of my questions and explaining how my tattoo will be the price of the store's minimum ($100). The waiver was very quick and simple to do and Cody was able to get the materials ready while I filled it out and even offered us water to make sure we felt comfortable. Even at the table, they gave me PLENTY of time to make sure I was making the right decision before they start the tattoo process, offering many different sizes of stencils and placements as well, giving their advice on which placement is the best. They also gave encouragement and was able to distract me by talking to me during the painful parts of the process.
