Ordered a caramel latte with hemp milk, an americano with house-made vanilla flavoring, and a Kinky Friedman (panini). Menu stated the panini had a jalapeño "tapenade" which was basically chopped jalapeño - way too many, way too spicy. Panini was also suppose to come with a side of fruit but we didn't get any - maybe we read the menu wrong. However, coffee was great! OK, so I'm in Houston at an Airbnb...which seemed in the middle of nothing but endless overpasses and traffic sounds...and the single most important part of their setup for me broke down: the coffee machine!! I stopped in after hearing they brewed (and sold beans of) my favorite brand of coffee, Geva, but was disappointed to find out I was told wrong. How could I not get coffee while stopping in? Of course I ordered a coffee; an iced vanilla latte, which was good. I also grabbed one of the breakfast pastries, something with ham on a croissant. It was delicious (and I'm usually not a fan of ham). I was able to get it warmed so I could eat it at a table on the outside patio. The actual coffee shop is very small making it hard to maneuver when there is more than a couple people ordering and waiting for orders, but the atmosphere is cute and they have organized the space to the best of their ability. As I stated, there is covered seating outside. I would stop in again if I'm in the area and looking for coffee. read more

I love this place, even it there isn't any indoor seating and I'm forced to enjoy my iced cafe de olla cold brew in the Texas heat. This place is located right by Axelrad, though they aren't affiliated with each other and you probably won't get away with purchasing something at Retrospect and bringing it to Axelrad (or so I've been told..). They've got two outdoor sections, one in the front that faces the intersection, and another fenced backyard area. The back has games like cornhole and some picnic tables, so its more of a place to be if you're with many people. They also have these little water fountains that provide a really good ambiance to the whole place. Wifi is decent, but I rarely like using my laptop in the sun, so I'd probably use this coffee shop as more of a place to socialize than a place to do work. They also serve an assortment of crepes, and you can get free balsamic drizzle if you want, though why wouldn't you! It makes any good crepe amazing. I've only gotten the savory crepes as I use this place as a quick breakfast pickup place while I'm on my way to work, but I haven't been disappointed. They also have some pastries, but you might as well get a crepe if you're coming here. Also, you should really pair it with the cafe de olla cold brew. It's a little sweeter than the cafe de olla at Campesino, but its still refreshing. read more

The atmosphere is really cute but the service sucked. There weren't many people in the shop when I placed my order, actually I was the only one at the time, & my order was forgotten. I waited in the sitting area for about 10-15 minutes before going in & the barista didn't even acknowledge that my drink had been forgotten. My coffee then was made on the spot & had to repeat my other without any type of acknowledgement. For 5 bucks plus tip, the coffee wasn't worth it. read more

I love the space here! All outdoor seating, but a great place to hang out with a friend or read a book - just check the weather before heading over. They also have a student discount (as well as a discount if you walked/biked over), which is really nice. If you do drive, they do have a lot that they share with Axelrad, but it shouldn't be too crazy because Retrospect is open before Axelrad typically gets super busy. (Location is also nice if you spend most of your day working at Retrospect and then you want to unwind at Axelrad :D). I don't come here too often, but would definitely recommend checking it out! read more

This is a cute coffee shop that's tucked away and is unassuming. It's one of those places that you would miss if you weren't specifically looking for it. I think this is a great coffee shop to go to when the temperature is above 50F. There is no indoor seating but there are benches/chairs out front and some covered seating in the back with heat lamps. The menu is sufficiently extensive and has a range of paninis and crepes. I also liked that they had breakfast tacos available from tacos agogo. However the tacos are bought pretty early on in the morning - by the time I got there at 9 am, it was sold out. I ordered one of their sweet crepes that had granola, blueberries, and cookie butter. I'm not actually a fan of crepes (I don't know why I decided to get something I don't like) so I personally didn't enjoy it too much. I did order the dark chocolate mocha made with oat milk which was pretty delicious. The oat milk brand is Pacifica which isn't my personal preference (I like oatly) but it still tasted great! read more

This is my favorite coffee shop for studying outdoors! They have a patio both in front and behind the shop with plenty of seating, power outlets, and shade. The coffee is great and they use syrups made in-house. They also have several board games to play with your friends. It can get busy at times so it may take a bit longer to get your coffee than you might be used to but the service is great! Solid cortados and flat whites here. They also have a very nice and laid back patio to sip coffee and enjoy the day. I have tried their savory crepe, the Marvin Zindler with sriracha sauce, which was delicious. Parking is ok, as they have a private gravel lot. Just don't wear high heels when coming here. It's also near Axelrad. So, you can grab a coffee and a bite to eat at Retrospect, and then head on over to Axelrad and grab a drink and a hammock to chill in. read more

Retrospect has one of the best customer service in town. The baristas were extremely helpful and welcoming. This is a good place for those who want to study in a nature-like setting without the bugs and wind. Their sitting area is basically a clear tent with picnic tables. I ordered a flat white. It's a small cup yet strong enough to wake me up. Parking is great (free and all day). The only downside is that outlets are hard to come by. Overall, a good coffee shop to kill a couple of hours. I passed by this place and got a really excited because it is such a beautiful location. Made plans to meet friends here a couple of days later. We read that he got really busy on the weekends so we kind of waited until around noon on a Sunday and it wasn't crowded at all. First, the whole set up is gorgeous, there's plenty of seating, or there was when we were there, the renovated house is just gorgeous. It is, however, incredibly impersonal, it's like a walk up window which I wasn't expecting. I understand about Covid, but standing in line like at Starbucks was not an enhancement. My husband, a coffee connoisseur from Europe, said the coffee was very bitter. I loved my cappuccino, it was perfection. My best friend had wine, but it was kind of expensive so I definitely wouldn't recommend that. Also, I hope they open it up see you can come to a counter at least, also paper cups, small ones at that, not even a regular size cappuccino, did not do it for me. This needs some upgrades before I'll come back here. First, counter service at minimum, and stop serving in paper cups for those prices. Rent must be high, the prices are bad. read more

I love this place! Lots of easy parking and their lattes are out of this world. I particularly enjoy the music and relaxing ambiance which makes studying ideal. Although the place is right next to a busy street, their outdoor water fountains drown out a lot of the noise and its easy for forget you are in a major city. The pastries looked great. Best part? Their crepes were good, but nothing stood out to me with the coffee. I felt like there wasn't anything special about it and that I could get it at any other coffee shop. I loved the location and decor - very rustic. Parking is also not an issue since they have a big lot! My only complaint is that it's mainly outdoor seating and with Texas' scorching, hot weather there needs to be fans outside. I was sweating outside and I was only wearing a shirt and some jeans. Also, bugs are a problem. There were a lot of ants on the benches I sat on and flies that kept on flying around my face and food. They should install a light that kills bugs as well. read more

I only had water to drink, but my spouse had black coffee. The only way he could describe it was that it "tasted like beans". He didn't dislike it, but he didn't love it. We went on a hipster coffee shop spree today. This is definitely a great place to go. My daughters got a brownie, it was a bit hard and had some unexpected salt crystals. Eww. The chocolate sauce on top was good though. I don't know what it is about hipster coffee shops and their thing about not carrying much in the way of sugar free. But Katz coffee is bitter and needs to taste good. I'm all for hipster but it needs to do more than look good, it needs to taste good too. Coffee was really good. Limited flavor add-ins and no inside seating though. Once it hit dark, it got really cold so I asked if they could turn on the outside heaters. It was about 57 degrees now (cuz Texas gets all the seasons in a day) and I was freaking cold. I had to type and my fingers couldn't be covered by my light hoodie. The barista told me he'd be out in a few minutes to turn them on but after throwing out the trash, collecting the outside plates abc then heading back in to make more coffee, he forgot. Which is fine, I thought he was the only person working so he's got a lot to do, but then 2 other workers came out from the inside somewhere to help him ... and still no heat. 3 separate people ended up asking them to turn on the heat before it was actually turned on. Probably the best coffee shop in midtown and Montrose (in my humble opinion). I'm super impressed. We would drive by the old run down space and I said to my hubs one day, "that needs to be a coffee shop." Sure enough, they did it! They did it well too. Amazing baristas and the coffee tastes oh so delicious. I only wish they had more gluten free options. Like maybe a gluten free crepe or pastry. We always go before church on Sunday and the hubs gets breakfast but I can't get anything because of food restrictions. Other than that, it's a great place to go for a cup of joe. The coffee was a bit odd. The cortado was very savory. I felt almost like I was eating some savory dish rather than drinking coffee. There was also too much milk so it really diluted the coffee taste. At the end, I felt like I hadn't drank any coffee at all. There weren't any points for presentation. There is only outdoor seating, so this isn't really a good place to get work done. It'd probably be nicer to just sit and relax. Though I didn't like it too much, my friends liked their lattes, so I'll be willing to say this place was okay.
