I agree with all recent reviews that they have strict rules. They might kick you out if you argue with them. My hairstylist did great job working on my coarse hair three times. I asked her if she's ok with my specific request and she said ok to take time to figure things out. After a haircut, I tried to make extra appointment for touch up and they said they are going to charge $100 for another haircut because it's over a week. I asked them for a smaller charge since it's only about 10 days. The front desk talked to my stylist and she got back to me to make another appointment and we'll discuss the price. Then the owner called me and said the stylist did not want to cut my hair and I need to cancel the appointment. I think it's bullshit because I was checking in with her often, and she let me make another touchup appointment. I think the owner doesn't want anyone who tries to bend their rules. They represent themselves kind of artsy and free spirit, contrary they are super strict on rules and not accepting everyone. read more

I was a customer at RBCS from Nov.7.24-Jul.7.26 & would like to share a few things so other folks don't get themselves into trouble like me. I wanna start by saying my stylist was Keri S., who is AMAZING & I absolutely have no issues with their work! They literally gave me the hair of my dreams multiple times, & if you get the opportunity to work w/ them, I highly recommend it. Where I have issues is the cancellation policy. Context: I grew up poor and I am still living paycheck to paycheck. My hair salon before this was my bathroom sink or a Great Clips. So idk much about luxury salons. My one rich friend did say this was a wild policy so I will trust her on that (she moves a lot & has a dedicated hair routine, so knows salons). My appointment was supposed to be Jul 10, 26. I'd been saving for months, & was at budget! However, my cat had an unexpected vet visit the week prior & the $550 bill drained what I had. This is where I would like to take responsibility: I should have cancelled THAT MOMENT. My partner does gig work & made miracles happen before, so I asked if we could do it again, w/ my deadline being Monday, 7.6.26, to cancel. On Monday, we didn't have the funds, I tried to make a call, & discovered my phone was not working due to Samsung Messages deleting their app. I could neither confirm nor deny the appointment. No big deal, I'll call tomorrow! The policy hadn't previously been enforced when I needed a cancellation & when my stylist needed a cancellation, & everyone seems super chill. Nope! After explaining I would need to reschedule because I didn't have the money, I was given an option: reschedule for Saturday (later, told that option was actually based on whether someone else would reschedule), OR pay the $300 punishment fee (originally quoted @ $250; the price magically jumped when I called back bc of a 'misquote'.) I paid the fee & told them to forget I'd ever been there, bc listen y'all: I am chronically ill. My knee has dislocated while I was on the way to the doctor & they were more understanding than this. There are days I wake up and can't move because of my illnesses. I can't be out $250-300 every time my body decides to have a flare up or my cat drains my savings. Unfortunately, like most modern "alt" things, it's corpo-fied. They don't specify how they calculate fees, since it's based on service fees, which vary depending on how your appt goes. They don't specify if their stylists were asked before enforcing this policy, nor do they specify if the stylist sees ANY of the money they charge you for "not respecting their time." *Jeesh*, I'm broke, not a purposeful donkey-hat. If you're disabled, have kids, have pets, or don't have money like that to throw around, & you decide to visit, some tips: Don't let them make you reschedule after your appt. Wait until ~48 hours before you want your hair done & see if they have openings. It'll be auto-confirmed, & you have less time for you/your pet/kid to get sick & cost you. If you ever have issues, do your best to speak to the lady tht works mornings. She is way more willing to listen & at least empathize with you when things are going wrong. I genuinely don't think this would've happened if I'd called earlier Tues morn, but I have a job & the afternoon lady refused to speak to my partner (despite him being the one who normally does the scheduling since it's usually a gift.) TLDR: RBCS says they're alt & plaster stickers around talking about their anti-establishment policies. Some ppl tht work there are genuinely great/do seem to live by those values. BUT it's an "alternative serving" luxury hair salon. And the "luxury hair salon" part will ALWAYS come first. If they aren't getting paid, they don't care. If you know you'd never find yourself in a situation similar to mine, go for it! Otherwise... it's not worth it. read more

Made an appointment as a returning customer, but was in the emergency room for an infection that had spread into my bowls. Was incapacitated and unconscious, so I couldn't exactly call to cancel the appointment when hospitalized overnight. When I was conscious, after my transport for home recovery, I called to explain the situation (including offering proof of my hospital visit). They informed me I'd be charged the full 100 for the haircut and would not provide any exception. THEN they asked if I wanted to reschedule. I'm sorry, but in what world could I afford an expensive hospital stay and 200 dollars for hair all in the one go? In what world am I able to just spring into a salon chair directly after my body has been put into a blender at the hospital?! How out of touch are you? The hair was already a splurge for me, now it's just another bill on top of one of the worst nights of my life. I will come back here. Those that know me, know how huge that is. A little background, because this is relevant. I have long, straight hair. Low maintenance. I have not been to a salon in .....20+ years? I'm a devotee of the $7 haircut place in my neighborhood, the random cheap haircut places a bit west of me, or hacking my hair off myself with a manicure scissors (that was fine during COVID, actually). I have never been loyal to a salon or haircutting place. I DIY most stuff hair related. But now, I want to be a little more phresh and ROCK and styley. My boyfriend came here first and I was so taken with how great of a haircut he got, that I decided I needed to come here too. So, I came here, armed with a photo of what I hoped would work for my hair. And it actually did! MARISHA, you are fantastic!! My hair has layers! It moves! It curves, even! it does not look thin, how did you dooo thaatt!!! It's still long, but it has shape and movement. I can still throw it into my beloved ponytail when it's time to GET SERIOUS WORKING, but now i have a fetching little strand that curves around my chin vs. a severe Germanic pony tail - it can be another actual style. I AM SO HAPPY WITH MY HAIR NOW. And tempted by the crazy bright colors they do here THAT'S IN MY FUTURE. I also feel comfortable getting a little wilder with the cut in the future, now that I have this fabulous gray growing in (which I love, gray hair RULES). Non gender specific pricing? TAKE MY MONEY, and my heart for a rational approach to hair cuts. Win WIN!!! Seriously, I am someone who balked when my neighborhood place started to charge $7 M / $10 F. NO. Updated review: Was told during my last cut that I should schedule my hair to be cut every 6 weeks. So I haven't been back as I didn't need a haircut every 6 weeks. I think I can dictate when my hair should be cut. And during the pandemic, I was not getting my hair cut. When I decided to get it cut, I moved on to someplace else. I am happy they are surviving the pandemic and switching gears, but this place has gotten me to steer clear of them based on a recent visit/experience by my mother who was asked to leave. I think I've been coming here for something like 7 years now, and I'm pretty sure that's the longest I've stayed with any stylist. One of the main reasons I've been continuing to come the last couple years is because they have been stellar with COVID precautions the entire time, and as someone with chronic health issues, that has been a high priority when choosing businesses to support and visit. So let's talk about a less than amazing haircut. I was in a couple weeks ago and knew that I was ready for a big cut and change, but I wasn't sure what I wanted. Billy and I talked through some ideas, and in the end, I told him to have at it with creative license. Every time in 7 years, doing that has ended up with an amazing cut that I get compliments on from strangers all the time - no lie. This was the first time I wasn't totally sure about the result. I gave it a couple weeks, tried styling it different ways and got used to shorter hair...but after awhile I just realized I wasn't thrilled with it, so I let them know. I came back in, explained what wasn't working for me, and got the result I probably had in mind but didn't have words for at my first visit. And honestly, that's on me because he can't be a mind reader. I have NEVER had a 7 year streak of good cuts with any stylist with this curly hair, so I am still exceptionally thrilled. Trust the process, and trust Rev. Billy with all of your hair care needs I know it is time for a new headshot whenever I reach a critical mass of people at work saying, "Wow, you look so much different than your photo!" when I turn on my camera for a Zoom meeting. Reviewing my headshot proofs this past week have made me reflect on what an incredible job my stylist, Rev. Billy, has done with my hair over the past 8 years. My natural hair is a dark, dark brown - practically black! The morning of a milestone birthday (no hints but it ended in zero), I decided I wanted to look like Silver Sable from The Amazing Spider-Man issue #265. Rev. Billy was amiable to my whims, and explained patiently and scientifically that going from naturally (and practically) black hair to white hair had to be done gradually so as not to cause all my hair to fall out. I was not familiar with this, as Billie Eilish explaining to People Magazine it took her months to become blonde had not been made mainstream yet. Rev. Billy was so incredibly careful and considerate, prioritizing the health and strength of my hair was first and foremost. "Trust the process!" I was told, and trusting that process paid off 100%. You can see that going from (practically) black hair to white hair IS a process. The strength and health of my hair was never compromised. And because Rev. Billy took such good care of it, I never ONCE had any of my hair fall out. Photos 1 and 2 are from May 4, 2019, the day I first began my white/blonde-haired journey. Photo #5 was taken February 25, 2021, the day I decided I wanted to grow my hair out. Photo #12 (my latest headshot) was taken June 17, 2023. Because Rev. Billy took such good care of my hair, I have been able to explore all different sorts of hair journeys. Including my most recent journey - which has been to grow my hair out as long as I possibly can. Or at least until my next milestone birthday ends in a zero where I will probably chop it all off and start again. All this to say, my hair is living proof of the benefits that come with taking your time and being patient with the process. Rev. Billy's Chop Shop has taken such good care of me, and I have been so fortunate to have Rev. Billy as my stylist always taking great care of my hair while making me look fabulous every step of the way. Cool name, but WARNING WARNING WARNING (Seriously: big warning) READ THE REVIEWS on Chop Shop. Don't let this happen to you. This salon is in my 70-some-year-old mother's Ravenswood neighborhood, and I heard my mother talking about how excited she was to try them out. So I called them up and left a credit under my mother's name, so she could treat herself to a birthday visit. When my mother went in for her birthday appointment, even though she'd had a consultation and confirmed what she wanted done over the phone, the stylist Marisha couldn't understand what my mother wanted, and when my mother asked for help from the receptionist who set up the appointment, she didn't want to get involved. Marisha then said she was cancelling the appointment, and that my mother needed another consultation, even though she had already had one, and just wanted what was decided, with the exception of the haircut. My mother was told that the salon was keeping all the money on her account, "because the appointment was cancelled without notice." My mother didn't want the appointment cancelled, and when she protested, she was kicked out of the salon and told she was banned. What??? My mother is a gorgeous and super smart person, a retired university professor with all her wits about her. She had a rough morning that day, but there was obviously a misunderstanding here that the salon couldn't or wouldn't work out, treating my mother like some irrational person, fully gaslighting her. The salon owner even phoned me afterwards, saying he was calling because he was "concerned" about my mother, that she'd entered the salon "wobbly," been "nasty" to his stylists, and to confirm that he was keeping the gift money I'd put on her account. The salon says in their response to other disgruntled customers in google reviews: "We won't ever stop exploring options to make you happy unless you will not extend us that courtesy." ...They didn't extend my mother that courtesy. She wasn't drunk, she wasn't abusive. The salon owner came in at the end of the situation and didn't try to diffuse anything. My mother's happiness was not a consideration. She says she was even trying to apologise for whatever they thought she'd done, as things got more out of hand. The salon also says: "Confrontation, and anger are the antithesis." If a customer is feeling misunderstood and starting to get frustrated and even a little angry, and this is viewed as confrontation and simply not tolerated at Rev. Billy's, then I wonder how many more customers have experienced this kind of thing? This sounds like it was a very frustrating situation for everyone, but ended up in my mother being gaslighted by the salon and theft of the gift money I sent to her. I've reported this to my credit card company as a failure to provide services. Absolute lowest rating for this salon, for their abhorrent communication skills, poor customer practices, as well as the bad haircut my mother got from Marisha at her previous appointment. I had the best salon experience of my life here! I am OBSESSED with my hair! It was my first time in and Libby was my stylist, I cannot say enough how amazing of a job she did. They are taking Covid very seriously with temperature checks and only 2 stylists working with one client at a time. I felt extremely safe coming in. Everyone was so nice and it is a salon environment everyone would feel comfortable in. In order to get the colorful hair I wanted Libby had to bleach my hair to snow from dirty (over processed) blonde. I have had my hair bleached many times and it has never come out this soft EVER. I felt like a magical unicorn walking out of the salon and I get compliments all the time on my hair, even weeks after my appointment. Libby also told me exactly how to maintain color and life after my appointment, and I left feeling so confident about upkeep! I am absolutely coming back to Libby for all of my hair needs. I made a mistake with the online booking system and booked an appointment same day instead of the day I had intended. I never got a confirmation of the appointment via text or email, otherwise I would've seen that it was the wrong day and called in to change it. The person I had booked with had a whole afternoon of listed appointments (which also made me think it was a day in the future). I called back immediately after I got a call 7 minutes after the appointment time asking where I was, realizing my mistake. I wasn't available to come in right away, unfortunately. 10 minutes tops was lost, which is much less time than the hour of services I requested. Be forewarned that there is no wiggle room for any mistakes around the online booking system, and you will be charged 100% of the services if you miss an appointment regardless of whether or not you try to rebook. Be super careful! I emailed in hoping that as a longtime, repeat customer, who didn't receive any confirmation, who has never flaked on an appointment with this studio, who was looking to reschedule, and book additional color appointments that they would be willing to work with me around the cancellation fee and help me rebook the services. I didn't realize that Rev Billy's salon would draw such a hard line on what was clearly a mistake and one that I was hoping to rectify by rebooking. I've never seen a place not willing to work with someone on such a large fee if they want to reschedule. Instead I got a response about customers respecting their policies, which I absolutely would have done had I not made a mistake. What really gets me is that I'm being held to a policy without any notification of the appointment. I got no email or text about the appointment saying "Hey, you booked this appointment at this time." which, IMO, should be sent from a system regardless of whether you book 2 months or 2 hours before the appointment. Had I received one and not acted on it, then that's on me. read more

Rev. Billy has been cutting my hair for years, and he and Amanda run a fantastic shop. Billy has guided me through multiple styles; they're always super professional with great recommendations for both cuts and product; and they're very good about keeping things on schedule and running a tight ship. So what's prompting a review now, after all these years? Simply put, I'm not sure I've seen a business (big or small) navigate the coronavirus pandemic better than the Chop Shop, while also providing the level of service I've experienced for years. The coronavirus has made me into a bit of a germaphobe; and I was very nervous about returning to get my haircut. I've now been back to Rev. Billy's Chop Shop for FOUR haircuts. Each time I've experienced the same level of care and caution. The appointment is confirmed at least 24 hours in advance. Upon arrival, Amanda warmly greets me outside the shop and takes my temperature. Hand sanitizer is also provided. Everyone is masked up...properly (no noses hanging out, dangling masks, etc.). Inside the shop, everything is socially distanced and the stations are disinfected in between each visit. Also, Billy always takes the time to explain his disinfecting procedures, and demonstrate how he is constantly disinfecting his tools during the haircut (I think after the fourth visit I told him I trusted him and didn't need the explanation anymore, but I greatly appreciated it!). So short story: I feel safe, and I'm still getting great haircuts after all of these years. Highly recommended! read more

I've been going to the same hair-maven for over 3 years. She's always honored my need for a mild, reliable hairstyle. She has always admired my natural graying locks, and never suggested that I cover them up to look younger. Rachel's generous and creative and patient and humble. All things I appreciate in a human. She let's me be picky and needy and whiny in her chair. She always has starbursts and my favorite lifesaver mints. In October 2017, she was also my savior on my wedding day, providing me with a style that stayed all-day through all weather and temperatures. Phew! In search for a reasonably priced salon, Rev Billy Chop Shop sprung up as one of the best salons for 2017. To my surprise cuts start at just $35. I booked a haircut with Harlow and she was spectacular! I walked in with Pinterest pictures of what I wanted my hair to look like and she kindly snapped me back to reality! My hair was down to my lower back, thinning out, and super unhealthy at the ends. Even though I was uneasy about cutting off 3 inches it was a must to regain healthy hair. I heeded Harlow's advice and she snipped away at a dry cut sculpting my hair to what was ideal for me. It was plain and simple but necessary for a step towards the right direction. No one likes when their hair is in transition but I had to swap the cost of glam to regain thickness. Harlow is a pro with exceptional communication skills. She really knows how to build rapport with her clients and can tell you what you need to do to achieve your hair goals! She's also super fair with pricing. Since I had a dry cut my hair wasn't washed and she charged me $30! So accommodating! I wouldn't hesitate to book your next appointment with Harlow! Ok let me just tell you one thing....they are amazing. At this point you don't call it hair dressing anymore, you are better of addressing it as: magic. I really had bad looking, over processed hair and they just turned it to an masterpiece. Had my hair done by Harlow and well let me just say: she is fun! She knows what she is doing, loves to share her knowledge and is open for last minutes changes! She turned my patchy blue hair in a flawless reversed-ombre beatifulness!! Pure magic!! I've been a massive bundle of nerves about being outside my home during this pandemic, and I'm super appreciative of Rev Billy's Chop Shop's thorough, comprehensive approach to keeping every person in the salon safe, which includes: Temperature checks at the door Contact-tracing questionnaire Hand sanitizing annndd washing A walkthrough of station sanitation procedures Contactless payment and tipping Masks (duh) + I'm sure a ton of behind the scenes stuff My appointment was for a super long overdue haircut. Billy didn't make me feel self-conscious about the state of my hair (not that I expected that!), and walked me through some tips for things I can do to keep my hair healthy and prevent breakage. I knew from past appointments that Billy prefers to engage in a conversation vs. looking at photos of hair styles/colors, and from that I ended up with just about the exact style I had in mind, done in a way that worked for my specific head. Cool! (And honestly, even if like me you're not super well-versed in hair terms and intimidated, isn't that so much better than a transactional copy-paste thing using a heavily styled photo?) Also! Amanda manages Rev Billy's Chop Shop's social media, where I've been able to get awesome product recommendations (you can purchase Kevin Murphy products through their online store). In addition to their awesome work, they also post really helpful resources for navigating the world, and it's great to support a business that is so assertively on the right side of important issues. The "Rev," if he is one, is rude and unwelcoming. I drove 1 hour to come in for a consult with Marisha. I was waiting for my consult and listening to a voice message and I heard "Hey, take that outside." What a jerk. The environment is uptight and "Billy" seemed wound up tight, like a strict parent. I go to a salon to treat myself and enjoy a pampering salon experience, not to walk into where it's hard to exhale without admonishment. The receptionist, Angie, was great. Marisha is also great. I would have left 1 star, were it not for Angie and Marisha. I didn't pay $250 and drive 1 hour to be treated like garbage. read more

Did you know they don't wash your hair as part of the service? Well I didn't. I guess this is really a 2.5 star review but there's no halfsies at Yelp, so I'm rounding down. Got my first haircut in 14 months (thanks, Covid) and was puzzled when she immediately started putting product in my hair and didn't take me to the sinks. I should've asked why, but I assumed it was part of the covid safety measures that are still in place. But I just checked the site and my confirmation email and there's no mention of "no hair washing" - and no option to add it on - so who knows why, but it's gross. If I'd known, I woulda washed my hair before my appointment. Instead I paid $65 (same price! no discount for lack of shampoo!) and walked out after 30 mins with not-clean hair. At least the cut came out cute! I hate to be harsh but...honestly, I'm not going back. A wash is part of the experience, you guys, wtf. I usually walk out of a salon feeling renewed and refreshed but this time I just feel slightly grubby and ripped off. read more

I received one of the worst haircuts of my life yesterday at Rev Billy's Chop Shop. A friend who does hair had warned me about it, but a stylist who twice before did a good job started working there, so... My bob is visibly longer on one side and each side is a different shape. I took pictures. I sent them via DM to the stylist on IG, with "Marian, I need you to know this is a terrible haircut." We had followed each other since summer. She didn't respond and disconnected us. A few hours later the owner, Amanda, called. Her message sounded like she wanted to rectify the situation. Nope. Amanda said she saw the pictures and didn't understand what was wrong, and that if I made another appointment they might* be able to offer me a free touch up. I wasn't mad until right then. I'm not a customer is always right person, but when your customer shows you pictures of their terrible haircut, you offer to do what you can to fix it. read more

It's so beautiful! I'm never disappointed with Rachel and your salon! I'm so glad I researched and found y'all. I was so worried after having some one I loved not be able to do my hair anymore. It was comforting seeing everyone's work at Rev Billy's consistent and awesome! I picked Rachel because her worked looked like something I would get done and her clients had a variety of hair textures. It was also wonderful knowing that Rev Billy's values and beliefs aligned with mine. That's important too in this day and age. I try to be conscious of who I support and where my money goes too. Plus your concern for COVID-19 and the safety precautions you put in place for your clients just cemented my decision to make Rev Billy's my new hair care home. I have been going to Rev Billy's now for almost 6 years and have loved every haircut I have gotten there. The staff is super knowledgeable and they carry amazing, clean products. I love the rock n roll feeling of the salon and always know I'm in good hands. I'd love to give them more than 5 stars and cannot sing their praises enough. The whole staff welcomes you every time you go in and they are just incredibly nice people. For my money, this is the best salon in the Chicagoland area, highly recommended! read more
