Excellent service! Delicious food! Since it was our first visit and we were celebrating a birthday, we got two complimentary desserts.

To summarize my experience at Reys would be to say it was like going to Outback or Applebees but more expensive, and everyone was wearing a tux. As far as steak places in the Raleigh area are concerned, I would recommend checking out Vinnies or the Angus Barn at this price point, or even Outback. Probably won't be going back. Let me preface by saying that although this review may seem overly critical, Rey's is considered a 'high-end' steak joint with a price-point to match, so please keep that in mind when reading on. In general, there was nothing terribly wrong with Rey's, but there was nothing really good either, and at this price point, I expected much more. Highs: 1) Steaks (Filet) was cooked very well 2) Friendly waitress Lows: 1) Our server didn't know the differences between the wines we had asked about 2) Food wasn't very flavorful, pretty bland. 3) This is the kicker - when our steaks for my girlfriend and I arrived, they didn't know which one was mine and which one was hers. I ordered the 10oz filet, she ordered the 8oz. They looked nearly identical in size, which was also disturbing, but neither my girlfriend or I could tell the difference. From time to time my work sends me on trips for training. We're allowed one meal we can splurge on (and reasonable amounts the rest of the time) so whenever I go I always try to find a good steak. I never head to the chain restaurants. I want good local fare, the stuff of legends. This trip to Rey's in Raleigh was just such an experience This is how a restaurant should treat it's guests. From the moment I walked through the door, I felt welcome, like an honored guest. I had made reservations earlier in the day but the place wasn't crowded. It had diners evenly spaced, so you could have conversations without having to shout over other diners, or enjoy a quiet great meal by yourself. The hostess was friendly and welcoming. The server, Kelly, was perfect. She gave me suggestions and was knowledgeable about the food there. It didn't feel like I was being sold something. More like she was guiding me on a food tour de force. I selected crab cakes for an appetizer. I have never had any like them before and likely have had all subsequent crab cakes I ever eat fail in comparison. There was sauce but I never touched it. Unlike the standard fare of places like Ruby Tuesday or the like, these were soft and perfectly seasoned on a sizzling plate of butter. Omg they were so good! The steak was cooked to perfection. It was a ribeye and was crusted with salt and pepper and light butter ( I asked because it was so good. Couldn't believe that was it) and I hardly touched my asparagus and garlic mashed potatoes because of it. They were good but the steak, it was divine. One of the best I have ever had. Kelly was very prompt in keeping my glass full, was engaging in conversation but not overbearing She knew when I needed something and when to let me just enjoy the meal. Food was generally pretty meh. The scallops appetizer was particularly unimpressive, and the sides are fine but not impressive. They weren't overdone, but they weren't well seasoned either. The chicken dish we got was executed competently, but without much imagination or flavor. We did love the Grouper Lafayette, and while the ice cream for the Banana Foster wasn't impressive the dessert itself was good. All around, just very disappointing for the price point. read more

I give it 2.5 stars. Went there with a large party of a dozen+ people. For the large group there was a select menu for the group. There was a choice of Eggplant, 16oz Steak, Salmon, and Chicken. I ordered the chicken. I was honestly disappointed in the chicken, and the other guests were disappointed in the salmon. The guy who ordered the steak had to send it back as he ordered it medium, and it was delivered between rare and medium rare. Everybody who ordered the salmon complained about it. Everybody said it had no flavor. And for $50, I would have expected a piece twice that size. For the chicken, it was loaded full of great tasting flavor, but it was over cooked by a few minutes. They added on the tip with each person, and if I am spending $50 or more for others, then I expect great food. The food was mediocre, but the service was excellent. This was the first New Orleans restaurant that we dined in. For the appetizers we had ordered the pan seared scallops and seared Ahi Tuna. Scallops was fresh and one of the best I've tasted so far. I did not personally like the tuna. Even though I enjoy sushi and wasabi combo, the wasabi cream that accompanied the tuna was very hot for me. For the entrees, we shared the Grouper Lafayette and a side of asparagus with hollandaise. One thing i liked was our dish was divided and served as two separate plating. There was a flavour of brown butter which i really enjoyed. We opted for the much hyped banana foster for dessert. Unfortunately it did not impress our taste buds. It seemed very ordinary and we wished we had looked at the other dessert options. As for the service, two things that did not go right was the wrong appetizers were served to us and then were changed. The wine we had ordered was not served till we asked our waiter for it. For these service mishaps, I would rate them as a 4 star. read more

After being spoiled at Rey's I tried Fleming's Steakhouse in Salt Lake City 2 weeks ago and although nice, there was no comparison to Rey's for quality and service. Tonight My wife and I celebrated our 50th anniversary, We were treated like royalty by the entire staff which made it a most memorable evening. I wanted Rey's to be good and struggled with a 3 or 4 star review. I made reservations for 7p on a Thursday night. I'm aware this is a popular time to eat dinner, thus the reservations. I try to arrive early when I have reservations so I can grab a drink at the bar. My boyfriend and I were a little behind for this plan and arrived just a few minutes before 7. We checked in for our 7p reservation and were told it would be a few before there was a table ready for us. The hostess suggested we get a drink at the bar. We decided to grab a glass of wine at the bar while waiting since we had time after all. They had a small but good wine list, with the various reds from appropriate regions (not just California reds). The beer list was subpar and I can't comment on the liquor. The 7p reservation somehow turned into a 7:25 seating time. I was a little annoyed with this since we had gone to the trouble to make a reservation. On the plus side, we were able to experience the bar area. It reminded me of an old cigar bar feel. The bar stools had a worn out fabric that need replaced, but were quite comfy. The bar tender was attentive. There were a few bowls of potato chips and bread on the bar. The rest of the seating in the bar reminded me of being in a lodge. The hostess finally came to seat us. The dining area was very much a family style restaurant trying to be a fancy steak house. There were a lot of families with younger kids. So it wasn't quite romantic or intimate. Our waiter was very attentive and knowledgeable about the menu. We each ordered a filet. I ordered the 8oz Oscar style and my boyfriend ordered the 10 oz. We both ordered them medium rare. We got the special lobster Mac and cheese as a side, as well as the Caesar and the wedge salads. My boyfriend ordered the gumbo. The gumbo came out first. The assistant waiter brought it to the table in a soup tureen and poured it into the bowl. He did it in a way that made it seem like he was angry to be pouring soup. It came off a bit abrasive. Next out were the salads, which were nothing to complain about. The lobster Mac and cheese had entirely too much cheese and hardly any lobster. It was more a melted hard cheese and not very creamy. The steaks were the best and also most disappointing part of the meal. My boyfriend's filet without the crab came out perfectly as ordered and incredibly juicy. My filet came out with a pink center and looked as if it had sat under the heat lamp for an hour or two and was completely dried out. It somewhat made me think they thought I wouldn't notice since I had crab on top of mine. I couldn't eat very much and my boyfriend was kind enough to share his with me. I should've sent it back, but don't like to make a scene. When the waiter asked at the end why I didn't finish and didn't want it boxed, he was immediately angry with me for not sending it back. He took a minute and returned and offered to get us dessert since the steak wasn't good. We did get the desert to go since he was going to bring it to us anyways. Upon receipt of the bill, the waiter had taken off my steak and the dessert. We went to Rey's to celebrate my birthday! When you pull up, you can tell that it's very upscale. As soon as we went In, we were greeted promptly and sat by the hostess. Server assistants quickly came over with water and warm bread and butter which was a little hard but it was good. They have a full book of wine by the bottle that you can choose from, an extensive appetizer list and a great variety of entrees. I got the filet mignon, with vegetable medley and mashed sweet potatoes. My hubby got the grouper layfette (we shared sides), and we had calamari for an appetizer. The calamari was AMAZING! OMG! Now to why I'm giving four stars... the food had barely any seasoning. The shrimp I had on the side of my filet was bland, my filet was bland until I squeezed lemon juice on it. The mashed sweet potatoes tasted really regular... like the ones I make at home. The portion sizes are also very small for this price point. Half the size of Ruths Chris. Hubby's food was also kind of bland. The vegetables were actually good. The texture of them were just right. Our waiter was amazing though, I even got a free birthday dessert! The food as very good when we both got our steaks cooked correctly, but considering that I ate my steak well before my husband had his cooked correctly, you'd think there would have been something comped for the mistake. We showed up 45 minutes early for our reservation and said "we know we re early, but if you can fit us in early, that'd be great. ". They said, oh yes! It'll just be a few minutes... go get a drink from the bar and we ll come get you." 50 minutes later, we went back to the hostess to get seated. We spent our 37th wedding Anniversary with Rey's. The restaurant is lovely, wait staff great, a fabulous pour( one of my fav Pinots) so let's talk appetizers .. I had the special, lobster bites stuffed into a shell. Yummy but got the warm butter when almost eaten. ( side note .. not worth the $30 price tag. Sides were great, Green beans with almonds and a spinach salad was good. Hubby said tuna was good ( not blackened as advertised) so on to my beef medallions with scallops. Not impressed. Rey's has slipped. On Saturday, February 4th, my wife and I had a dinner here. Some diners were there wearing baseball caps turned backwards, many diners with only t-shirts and other logo shirts. They dampened the atmosphere of a fine dining restaurant. This is not the Rey's I always liked. There was even a child crawling on the floor...management did not seem to care. Thankfully, the food was as I always remembered and enjoyed. The facade of the building is elegant, it kind of has a banquet hall look, so I felt like I was stepping into a special event. It's a great place to celebrate a special occasion. I've always even there in December and they have a beautiful Christmas tree and decorations. The main decor of the restaurant is elegant and has an upscale feel. They have private dining rooms within the restaurant that will give you an intimate dining experience. Their service is fantastic, they're very attentive and Rey even stops by see his your dinner is going. The only reason this isn't a solid five star review is because the food hasn't blown me away and while most of it us good, it doesn't fully match the price and ambiance. I've tried many appetizers, some are great, some just okay. The desserts I think are all excellent and I've tried almost all of them. Appetizers: My favorites are the fried oysters, scallops and crabmeat cocktail. I think the New Orleans shrimp are okay and didn't care too much for the seared tuna. Since the restaurant has a New Orleans theme, I found the Gumbo to be the most disappointing, it wasn't very flavorful and I didn't get any meat in mine although it's supposed to be sausage and chicken gumbo. Entrees: I've tried the Oscar Beef Tournedos, the Filet Mignon and the Grouper Lafayette. The fave has been the filet with some blue cheese crumbles. Sides: They're ordered separately. My faves are the au gratin potatoes, mushrooms (very, very good mushrooms) and green beans. Desserts: The Chocolate Raspberry Truffle cake was sinfully good and very rich, so you need to save room if you wanna try it, or share. The crime brûlée is so good I find it hard to share. The bananas fosters and cherry jubilee are a fun flaming spectacle at the side of the table and Rey came over and prepared them himself. We've been to Rey's a couple times, most recently we went Friday night. We went to celebrate my husband's birthday. From the moment we were seated, everything was excellent! There was a hand written note wishing my husband a Happy Birthday, which was a nice personal touch. The food was amazing! I had the caprese salad and salmon, my husband had the wedge salad and chicken piccata. We thought everything was delicious. For dessert we both had crème brûlée which was great too! The service was probably the best service I've had a restaurant, the server was attentive and polite but not over the top. We made reservations 3 months ago to celebrate Christmas with our family. We arrived on time for our reservation yet still had to stand in the lobby for 20 minutes waiting for a table, with no one in front of us. We were finally seated in the bar area which was definitely not by choice. The appetizer portions were so small they were barely enough for 1 person to enjoy. The wedge salad had rusty lettuce and barely any bacon and mealy tomatoes on it. When the entrees arrived all FOUR of our filet mignons were cooked wrong and my youngest's "frozen" pizza was cold. This is unacceptable for such an expensive restaurant. Never in my life have I been to a $$$ steakhouse and was served food like this. This was our first time here and definitely our last time. My husband and I made reservations a few days ahead of time. We have eaten at Rey's a few weeks ago and had enjoyed it, so we decided to go again. When we arrived, we had to wait quite a while only to be offered a table in the bar instead of the dining room. The hostess had been asked by quite a few other people who, like us, had made reservations, and were told that there were a lot of large groups, so they didn't have any tables. Not really a good excuse in our book, as a restaurant of this caliper should be able to adequately schedule their reservations. I happen to be vegan, but my husband is a true carnivore. That being said, I looked online where they advertise "vegan options", but called ahead to see if something other than the vegetable plate could be prepared for me. It seems to be all that is ever offered to us vegans at these high end restaurants. The hostess said that there is a pasta dish on the menu and that it is vegetarian. I then asked if there was egg in the pasta and she put me on hold to find out for me. When she returned to the line I was told, "The pasta does have egg in it and they have no other pasta in the restaurant." Nothing else was offered to me. Hoping that at least there would be some good bread and salad to compliment my meal, we decided go anyway, and my husband looked forward to a great steak. After being seated, our drink order was taken in a decent amount of time by a waitress. It took 25 minutes for our wine to arrive so we decided to air on the side of caution and go ahead and place our dinner order when the wine was finally delivered. While waiting on our drinks, bread was delivered to the table by another waiter. At this point, we weren't quite sure if they were both our waitstaff or if it was just one of them. The bread was already toasted with butter on it, so I asked for bread without butter (I don;t eat dairy), and the waiter went off to the kitchen. He returned to let us know that all the bread had been prepared that way before the shift and that unfortunately this often happens on Sunday night and they didn't have any other bread. We now realized why all the bread had been toasted...great way to disguise day old bread...toast it and add some melted butter. Ok, so much for the good bread to compliment my meal! I ordered a salad, which came about 20 minutes later. It was very good, and my husband and I shared it. Almost an hour later our meal still had not arrived and we decided to catch the waiter and find out what was going on. We had hired a sitter, and although we had given ample time for dinner, we didn't think we would be home as promised. A few minutes later, our meals arrived. My husband's steak was very undercooked, and my potatoes were overcooked. At this point, we had to eat in a hurry and didn't have time to say anything to have it all corrected. My husband ate from the edge of his $50 steak and I ate some of my potatoes and veggie platter and we had our food boxed to go home and asked for the check asap. The waiter apologized and offered a free dessert to be sent home with us for having to wait so long. Since nothing vegan is offered (the waiter kind of nervously joked/smiled), my husband took a cheesecake and we hurried on home...late. I don't think we will ever go back. Overall: 1) Fix your reservation system so you can seat those who you promised a table. 2) Wait staff not attentive enough to see that it was taking way too long for our drinks and meals to arrive. 3) Temperature in the bar area was too cold, and there was an air vent pointing directly down on us cranking away the whole time. 4) No bread left because it's Sunday? No excuse! Figure it out and plan accordingly. 5) Get with the program! This is 2021. Not all of us eat meat or dairy, yet our spouses do. Have some options on the menu for those that don't...or offer to make something. read more

Went here for my birthday. My wife saw the reviews and thought it would be great. Well, it was not. I got lamb chops that were not great - definitely had better. My wife and daughter got the grouper and flounder, respectively. Wife enjoyed her dish. My daughter thought her dish was ok. We had the Au Gratin potatoes, creamed spinach, and asparagus. Besides the potatoes, the sides were nothing to get excited about. The part that bothered us the most was the service. I never been to a restaurant where we felt rushed to eat and leave. The server seemed to be at our table quite frequently. They took my daughter's tea before she was done. It felt like they were grabbing stuff as soon as a plate was close to being done. Maybe the attentiveness works for some but I felt like the dinner could not be enjoyed. The visit did not start well. We had only 2 places set. The 3rd place setting did not come until the water was being filled. We did not have any bread at the table. My daughter asked about it before server noticed we weren't given any. We were given a cheesecake for my birthday which was nice. As others have mentioned, the atmosphere was loud and did not feel like at upscale restaurant. I love this restaurant. My husband, son and daughter n law went on Saturday evening. We had a scallop, oyster and shrimp appetizer that was hot and wonderful. We had steak and salmon with lobster mac n cheese, asparagas, and potatoes as sides. Everything was great. My husband said his steak was not as tender as he had hoped for, but my salmon was amazing with the mango pineapple salsa. We had whiskey bread pudding and chocolate raspberry cake. This a great spot. Super friendly staff, classy ambience without feeling stuffy, nice music, and of course delicious food. I was here with a party of 7 for my mom's birthday. We made a reservation though we may not have needed it. The food really is spectacular. Our entrees ranged from fish to chicken to steak and everyone was very happy. The French onion soup was one of the best I've ever had, and seriously save room for the dessert! Bananas Foster was out of this world! Must try. Only small complaint was that it took several minutes for our waiter to come to the table. They did have two very large parties in private rooms, so that could have caused the hold up. It did not appear that tables or Room were set up with proper social distancing. We felt highly uncomfortable to the point where we contemplated leaving. Food and wait staff were excellent. The service was pretty good, but there could have been improvements elsewhere. The steak was undercooked. Both my wife and I are fine eating rare steaks, which is what we each received for our ribeye. However, we each ordered medium rare. They were very much rare though. The knives were unable to cut the steaks. It took a couple tries for them to bring us out ones that were sharp enough to be usable. (The steaks being rare didn't help with this.) It's been over 10 years since I was last at Reys, and it may be another ten before I try it again. It's a shame we didn't have a better experience, as we're building our new house less than 10 minutes away. If you're wanting an upscale meal, I'd recommend you try elsewhere. I loved going to Rey's, but this experience, when it comes to the food was not good. I had the grouper Lafayette, which I have had on more than one occasion and it was rubbery, almost like it was underdone. I ate around the edges and took it home. I normally don't send food back. Then there was the cream corn. I don't know what that was. It was terrible. My friend had to send back her whole dish, which was the Chicken Marsala. I ate mash potatoes and the side of scallops that I ordered. My bill was $88 and was not worth it. I will maybe try given Rey's another chance at a later time, since my good experiences on other occasions outweighed this bad experience. This was a bummer. read more

We went to Rey's on a Friday night with another couple. Our friends recommended the restaurant and had gone here for many years. In short, we had a great time. The craft cocktail list has about ten choices... I enjoyed the Rey's Manhattan Martini. Made expertly with good proportions of bourbon and vermouth, served very ice cold in a rather large martini glass. ( Don't have two!) Delicious. Our waiter Percell ( spelling?) was very attentive, with a great sense of humor. Wine was ordered and glasses kept full. The entree I had was a Grouper pan fried with crab on top. The fish was perfectly cooked, and flaked just the right amount. A lot of lump crab was on top. Very filling and rich with a New Orleans flair, well seasoned but not overly salty. Side dishes serve two to four , so we ordered asparagus, and garlic mashed potatoes, and it was plenty for the four of us. Dessert was a peach flambé, fired and flamed up table side, served with vanilla ice cream. The restaurant spaces the tables nicely, and upholstered chairs, carpet and drapery absorb sound. It was a nice change to be able to hear everyone at the table. Can't wait to go back! read more

I went here for the first time tonight (August 2022) and it was uhhmazing!!! Probably some of the best food I have ever had! I got the 16oz ribeye and the garlic mashed potatoes. Not only was the food delicious but the service was the best I have ever had. Constant water filling and never had to ask for anything twice. Even our waiter was making jokes and having a good time. This is a good place to have steak. The service is good and the filet mignon was cook exactly as how we wanted. Very tender inside and crispy outside.
