Dynamite restaurant. I can tell you the prime rib on Saturday nights is a highlight anytime I'm in Rhinelander. And the Friday night fish fry is a revelation. I would have loved to have given the Pub 5 stars because the food is good and I like that they provide a lovely and delicious salad bar. But the overall ambiance is sorely lacking. My first impression going inside through the back door is the 2 huge dumpsters that greet you. Ugh! Out in the open; easily fixed with an enclosure. The door slams LOUDLY behind you as you face the coat rack, a bunch of chairs piled along the wall and no one to greet you. There's a sign that tells you to walk through the entire restaurant to the front! You're almost forced to park in the back due to the limited parking on main street so the back entrance area really needs to be much nicer. Once we were seated we faced a bus-boy station against the wall. THAT really needs to be addressed because it's just plain ugly. You really expect more than a diner experience when you're paying BIG money for the food. Now for the food...it really is harder to find much better. I have only had one item there that I wouldn't order again...the gyro. Their steaks and prime rib are top notch and prepared perfectly. Fish is wonderful no matter what you choose. I've had 2 family members mention they weren't impressed with the pasta offerings but then again I don't go there for pasta. Staff is friendly and professional. I was NOT a happy camper when I realized they charge a fee to use a credit card. When I've paid almost $50 for a steak dinner I don't expect that. It's just tacky and not a good way to "thank" a customer. read more

A GO TO restaurant in Rhinelander. Had a group of 4 & had a enjoyable lunch. Service was good with plentiful choices on the menu. Atmosphere is less than desirable & needs to be updated. Lunch choices included the Pub Special, Gyro Omelette & Blackberry Grilled Cheese. Pub special & omelette was very tasty but grilled cheese was too hot with jalapeño. Stopped in on a Sunday afternoon passing through town. This place was great the staff was super friendly and professional. We ordered drinks beer on tap. It was ice cold and perfect, and a Bloody Mary. Check out the picture it looked awesome and tasted awesome. we order the roast beef sandwiches they were served on a focaccia bread with a homemade cheese spread. It was the best beef sandwich I've ever had! The decor was cool, styled like a cross between an Irish pub and a vintage boat theme. 5 stars because of location. You'd be hard pressed to find something better with in a 2 hour drive. read more

Due to COVID however, they do not have a full menu, so make sure to ask about your favorite dish to make sure they're still making it. The wait staff will not bring you a salad. $100 family of 4 isn't worth the new Chucky cheese style Buffett. The 100 years of personality is now dead. The Buffet was congested and dirty. This is a horrible setup for those mobility issues. I tried to contact them offline privately and they did not return my Facebook messages despite the fact they saw them. I would make a different choice if you're going to spend $100 unless you believe in spending that much money for a buffet of popcorn shrimp. read more

A great spot for a special occasion or date, the Pub is one of the nicer places in Rhinelander. I came here for a special night with my boyfriend and made a time of it. We started off with a cheesecurd basket while we waited for our raspberry chicken with wild rice and steak with gratin potatoes to arrive. We also ordered a chocolatini and grasshopper. The curds and drinks were absolutely delicious. It was the salad I ordered with my meal that lost three stars for me. They brought my caesar salad out and it was moldy. The tomatoes were visibly broken and covered in green mold but were turned out on the lettuce. Thankfully I dont like tomatoes so I saw them before I took a bite and saved myself getting sick. The waitress didn't seem surprised and took it back to the kitchen with no replacement. Yikes. Though nervous to then eat our food the rest of dinner went really smoothly. I hate to leave such a bad score but to me it felt like they knew the tomatoes were rotting given they were all turned over mold side down. I dont know if I would eat here again. I got a ceasar salad with chicken and thought that $17.00 was a little much was shocked when I received the bill to see that the salad cost me $20.00 they upcharged me $3.00 to blacken it. My daughter ordered spaghettis and meatsauce and she wanted the sauce on the side. They upcharged me an additional $3.00 to have it on the side. The meal was $16.00 and hers ended up being $19.00. We have been eating at the Rhinelander Cafe and Pub for close to 35 years. When we lived in Chicago we would vacation up here in Rhinelander in the summer and always go to the Pub for dinner with our friends. We always ordered their Rack of Lamb which was wonderful. Unfortunately new ownership decided (in the past 10-12 years) to take this item off their menu (sad). We still go there from time to time and have not been disappointed. My family has been visiting that area between Rhinelander and Eagle River for 25 plus years, mainly Sugarcamp Lake area. After several bad experiences with local supper clubs, we visited a proven local restaurant that the residents go to. Very comfortable setting, prompt seating and attentative waitress staff. They actually know how to make an Old Fashion (pressed) drink. They have daily specials which are limited and go fast which is understandable. I had the 16oz. blackened ribeye that was cooked perfectly, with garlic mashed and cream of mushroom soup that was homemade. Its nice to know that when you plan dinner in the Northwoods, you can always bank on Rhinelander cafe. I look forward to eating there and hope they go another 82 years.. read more

Went here on a trip to the Cranberry festival in Eagle River, a Saturday night. The sign on the door says they have been in business since 1911. The restaurant is decorated as described here, a cafe in the morning with a coffee counter in front, dark paneling, 1970 decoration, plaid carpet..in short everyting an up north supper club should be. We both had prime rib, Caesar salad, I had green beans, my wife had gorgeous Au Gratin potatoes. The food was spot on for what we had, was served in a timely fashion, tasted great and was not expensive. We didn't have to dress up or sustain blows from snotty, pretentious staff. We stopped in for a late breakfast as we drove through town. The pancakes were some of the best I've ever had! Veggie Omelette was FANTASTIC! Service was excellent and staff was friendly. My ONLY complaint is where we were seated. We were placed in a booth that was in the corner near the kitchen door. Normally, that's not a big deal, except here, they've placed the restaurant's POS system right next to the table. So every 90 seconds, servers were standing right next to our table placing their orders & talking to each other. Plus, they kept the carpet sweeper against the wall next to the booth, so there was constantly someone coming over to use that. It made our entire meal very awkward & uncomfortable. In town on business and was worried we wouldn't find much to eat in this small town. This came in as a recommendation from a colleague's friend. Everything was great - atmosphere, service, drinks and oh my the food. Bartender knows how to make a good, stiff drink. Try the spinach artichoke dip, very good. The sausage and rice soup did not disappoint. Then the main course - braised lamb shank, amazing. Our server coerced us into dessert, we'd come this far so why not? An OK place for downtown Rhinelander. I had the lamb shank special one night that was very good. You should maybe reconsider ordering the lasagna though. It is sweet and salty, which I prefer in my candy bars, not my lasagna. One night a week they have an accordion player. The music is LOUD, and he only takes a 5 minute break, so there's little reprieve from the music. Its nice to listen to for the first few songs, but then... Older icon restaurant that makes you feel like you're stepping back into early 1960s. Server was friendly and upbeat dealing with holiday weekend visitors. 1919 root beer served in icy cold mugs was delicious. Food was ... meh. My order medium burger was charred and well done; however sweet potato fries were nice with right crunch. Battered cod was good, but fried scallops were overdone; the side of coleslaw was tasty. Okay, edit. Second night here was one of the best dining experiences of my life. The staff is beyond friendly. The bartender introduced my party to all the local beverages. This was by far one of the best nights I've had while traveling the country (and I travel a LOT). Loved the blackened rib eye steak and scalloped potatoes. Bar staff was super friendly (waitress wasn't but it seemed like she was just having a bad night). The real treat was Larry Jarkowski the Electronic Orchestra! Wanted a Friday afternoon Fish Fry so stopped in. I had the broiled cod - very good. Cole slaw good too. I personally did not like the potato pancakes- they were more like a regular pancake in texture. I like more potato & more crispy. My son had fried cod & liked that. Other son tried the gyro plain& enjoyed. Husband said cheeseburger good. Coffee very good. We LOVED the little chocolate pudding dessert they brought out! Our server Ashley so nice & attentive! We had been here before and had decent food and service. Was a slow Sunday there. Maybe 6 tables in the whole place with 4 severs and 1-2 people bussing tables. We came back again and sat the bar for pre-dinner drinks. We ordered our food with a server, the bartender took out for our drinks, and never came back to see if we wanted another even tho we did. Sat there for 10 min with empty drinks. Gave up and went to our table when our server said our apps were up. She never came to check on us. (Servers name was Michelle, make sure you never have her). We ate our apps and Michelle finally came to check on us. We asked for a pitcher of water...she brought us 2 glasses. Which we quickly emptied and were never brought refills. Although she bragged up the salads... they were lack luster. 1 tiny tomato, 1 black olive, and 1 green olive over almost white lettuce and 2 little pieces of actually green lettuce. To top it off, their "two cheeses" consisted of that fake yellow cheese you put on a child's sandwich.. cut in half and laid on top of the salad. I wish I had taken a picture for everyone to see. Dinner came. She finally came to check on us and we happily got our boxes to leave. A different server cleared our plates and we gladly left. It would be nice to find a place to eat a decent meal that also has decent service. Our last experience was lack luster but we thought we'd give it a second try. There are plenty of options on the menu and everyone will find something they like. Fresh baked pies finish a generous entree. What can you say? Rhinelander Pub is celebrating their 100 year anniversary in 2011. Quite the accomplishment. The food is decent. Unimaginative, but reasonable. The soup was very good, and the rest of the meal (burgers, a steak, and potatoes) was average. This is basic, standard fare. It won't blow your socks off, but it will satisfy your appetite. The service is pleasant and prompt. The waitress was old enough to be my Grandmother and then some, but this was somehow comforting. It was nice to see an establishment that employs those who want to get out and work. The decor is something to be seen. Nothing has changed since at least the early 70's. This may sound like a negative, but somehow it works for the Rhinelander Pub. It is old school and dated, but it works for this place because despite that, it is clean, well kept, and although "out of style", somehow feels current and comforting. read more
