Rhino Records has really made an effort to nose its way closer to the tip top of my list of preferred record stores. I have always been an off and on fan of the store that boasts the most proboscis. I would like to explain why poking one's snout into Rhino is probably going to be a better and better ideas as time elapses. Rhino has stepped up its used record offerings. There is a whole section that the staff keeps stocked from Warner Bros. records inventory and whatever the store buys from local sellers. The used records are reasonably priced and plenty of relatively tough to spot singles can be found. I have picked up a few quasi elusive singles here. The 45 section needs to be sung about too. Lots of top shelf 45s to be found. Rhino might have one of the better 45 sections I can recall. For one, the section is actually organized, and the staff appears to gave done some due diligence to include only the highest graded and more desirable 45s. I believe they even have a category just for rare 45s. The employees at Rhino have always been friendly and/or polite to me. This is definitely a plus for Rhino because record stores sometimes attract applicants people who look like they're trying too hard to audition for the next Kevin Smith flick. I would not say that the staff is impressive here, but I don't imagine the wages for working at Rhino are much of a motivator. The staff at Rhino loves music and does its best to help records find their forever turntables. Although I have more or less limned the praise of the odd toed ungulate, I hazard Rhino could be a tad more generous when buying records. Sometimes I have been given some real lowball offers for a record or two I've brought in. I realize anyone can sell/trade elsewhere; thought I would post that Rhino may not be the ideal location to sell a record collection. Look elsewhere for fairer or trades or for getting more for selling a collection. Do go to Rhino for used records, 45s, and any needed new vinyl or reissues. I'm glad Rhino Records is still around, it's a cool record store that's been in Claremont since 1976! They sell a bit of everything: CDs, books, vinyl and other merchandise. The store is big, the selection is just OK, prices a tad high. Customer service could be better, we're actually in line for so long (just one person ahead) that we gave up buying the CD we found. There was another customer service person behind the counter but he didn't do anything, just stood there. Otherwise, if you're in the area, like music, check out the store. This is our first time coming to this location. I don't love it, to be honest. It fit much better in the village and it was way more convenient so we went more often. They have a lot less of the fun kitschy gift stuff. In fact, they have hardly any at all. And, something I really don't understand... like the old location, this one gets hot and stuffy, too. Even on days where it really shouldn't be. They need to circulate air! The best is when they have their $1 sale. You really can't beat that. Vinyl, CDs & DVDs that were priced at $2.99 are all $1 during this sale. There's a big mish-mash of stuff, but you can definitely find some gems. They have a decent selection of hard to find and collectible albums. Definitely call if there's something specific that you're looking for. read more

my 4 stars is for my overall experience and history with the store since the mid 80's. i'm glad rhino is still around and now in montclair and i personally never had bad experiences with the rhino staff (except 1 issue which was outside the store) but i've seen some serious s**t go down with one employee (who may or may not still be there) on multiple occasions directed at other store employees. i'm not going to trash the store but i would say that the crew from the 80's thru the early 00's were more communicative. since 2010-ish the crew seems less interested in helping you (generally speaking of course) such as "the big guy" there. sometimes i would ask a question and the answer would be only a few words and that was it, back behind the counter and you become invisible. another time i asked him about the old rhino shirts after they moved and he walked away. selection has always been better than most but in TODAY'S store climate media isn't as available as it used to be. usually if ANY store doesn't have it they have to order it. overall just about any music store is going to have an elitist / arrogant crew in some form. its always been like that and it will always be. but in a time were invisible / soulless online sales dominate with one click, stores should realize that customer service matters today more than ever. read more

Great record/CD/DVD store. music is arranged by genre, so you don't waste time looking at things you have no interest in. they also sell books, turntables and accessories. prices are generally very reasonable. they also have a frequent buyer program where you earn points for each purchase and redeem them once you reach a set level. my only complaints: they don't pay very well if you are trading in used items, and they are closed on Monday. all in all a very good little shop. read more

Remember records and cassette tapes? Who could forget compact discs?! Wow! Rhino is like a time capsule that has records, C.D's and tapes with music on them. I am guilty of discarding all of my C.D's and tapes and replacing them with Apple Music, but walking through Rhino reminded me of my youth and how much music I forgot I used to own. Rhino has everything a record shop has and more! Need a music themed gift for a friend? Rhino has it. Need patches or pins? Rhino has it. What about a cassette tape player to impress your hipster friends? Rhino's got it. Rhino was here before Amoeba Records in Hollywood, but essentially it's like a small scale Amoeba records minus the huge DVD/VHS selection. If you're in Claremont, Rhino is one of those landmarks you need to visit. read more

Th is is the old school vines of re off shops. These dudes take the time to help you with what you are looking for, and even sometimes just talk shop! That's what it was all about. Glad they aren't like a lot of other record shops that are too cool to talk to you. Great selection of old and new and always have great music playing. Who's the early bird of independent records to survive the holocaust of the industry that claimed Tower and Virgin Records in the early 2000s? That's right, Rhino, and their smaller counterpart, Mad Platter, in Riverside. Both stores share a common attribute, they have important universities nearby. Arguably, Claremont is a genuine college town whereas Riverside is a city with a university in a back corner pocket. Where do I begin? I've been shopping here for more than fifteen-years, so I can confirm the gradual resurrection of vinyl and the rapid escalation of prices new and used. Then (c. 2005) used records in top shape cost $2.99-5.99. Today (2017) average used record costs $9.99-$20+ for earlier pressings. Even reissued vinyl can run $15-65! Glad I was ahead of the curve, seriously. One time I walked in and scored a collection of promo blues albums in tip top shape. Never saw a selection like that again either. The jazz section is pretty decent but I have specific objectives there so it's hit or miss. The CD sections are also well curated and used lie with new in their genres. Decent used prices, $4.99-9.99 for current and out of print discs. Employees are friendly and love music. I enjoyed hearing Prince as I hunted the racks today. The books and novelties are another reason to shop here if you're not into music. However, should you decide to engage they stock amplifiers, CD players, turntables and even tape decks! Excellent record store! Great selection of vinyl and CD's in many genres. Plus, I am truly impressed with their Progressive Rock section. It is so nice to find a record store that has a seperate and impressive section for this genre. Both classic prog and more modern bands/artists. That said, I doubt you will be disappointed with this store regardless of the musical genres that you like. The staff is helpful and devoid of tbe "too cool for the room" attitude that you find at some record stores. Rhino Records is well worth a visit. I've bought everything from cds, cassettes, vinyl, dvds, blu rays, and now an avid vinyl collector. 85% of my collection is from here. Great establishment. I love stopping here whenever I'm in Claremont for an awesome record or two. So much selection on great music with not only vinyl but also CDs and cassette tapes. I think they may have DVDs too but I'm not positive. Lots of really cool posters all over, books, coloring books, key chains, stickers, pins..etc. They even have box sets. I didn't buy any vinyl because they are all over-priced. I'll give em two stars because it's nice that they are still around and I'm sure a lot of people can find some great stuff in there but it's just not for me. I can't justify paying 10%-15% more than retail value/msrp. I get it, it's brick and mortar, but I'm just not willing to pay the extra to keep them in business, sorry. And to top it all off, if the record sleeve on a new record is damaged they don't care and won't offer a discount which to me is poor customer service. All the best Rhino. I have been coming to Rhino Records off and on for a couple years and enjoyed it. I went there this past Sunday February the 28th and will never go again. I took my father there because he's old school and likes CD's. The guy working the cash register "Jeremy" looks over at us and said "The line starts over there, if you can read". WTF? After we left i called the manager to complain and he never returned my call. Unprofessional. All and all it doesn't matter i will go elsewhere. I don't recommend anyone going to this place. First time visiting this store and won't be the last! They had a great selection of new and used vinyl. I was surprised to find used vinyl from artists that I love. The aisles are big! I don't have to worry about being in the way and people could easily walk through. Everything was well organized and categorized :) the cashier was super sweet as well. Their jazz section (which is my go to) has a good variety of artists.They have a variety of plastic and paper sleeve covers for both LP's and 45's. I also picked up a vintage 45 crate that has held together well after all these years. The clearance bins are full of gems just be sure to give them a test run around the available turntables. A nice selection of cds. I've revamped my cd collection w a cd player in my car cds sound much better than the mp3s. Though I'm deaf in one ear, I can still hear the difference. I also stumbled upon an interesting town. I didn't have much time as I had to get to a meeting but def will explore in the future. Lots of rock. Record stores are a thing of the past, as the not so recent digital age ushered in mp3 downloads & streaming, (ie. Tower Records, Wherehouse ..etc) so it was a great surprise to stumble upon Rhino. This isn't just a little hole in the wall (hobby) record store, this place is big and sell many rare collector's vinyls. Some were printed overseas. Thier selection varies from the classics like Led Zeppelin, to the new; Lorde, Pure Heroin album, yes in vinyl. Why would anyone buy a record over CD or digital download? Simple. It sounds better, although some will defend technology & disagree. Of course, they also sell CD's, gag gifts, t-shirts and even have a shelf for cassettes. Rhino is a total nostalgic place for me, as I used to collect records years ago (esp. rare imports) I didn't get a chance to browse as long as I want due to dinner plans, but I will make a point to go out there again. read more

It's been a while since I have darkened these doorways but the feeling was immediately nostalgic. Vinyl records along the walls, record players for sale, Used DVD's lining up the aisle... No, this is not Amoeba but it was still nice to browse on Sunday afternoon. Found one of my favorite classic Doris Day movies "Glass Bottom Boat" I was SO excited I almost purchased instantly but realize I could probably get it cheaper and NOT used on Amazon for nearly $6.00 cheaper =/ It's not as cluttered as some old Record Stores and let's face it there is something to be said about the "stand alone" shops like these CUSTOMER SERVICE! they were nice, friendly and helpful. Our FAVORITE record shop! Located in Downtown Claremont, it's good sized store that's easy to spot. Don't let the parking situation deter you (finding a spot on a Friday night or weekend in the Village can be a pain)~ they have a parking lot that they share with the video shop next door. Great selection of new & used vinyls... They also carry cd's, record players, posters, books, and quirky random Merch! I have 3 teenage girls who all have completely different taste in music, but they can always each find something to interest them here! Definitely worth stopping in if you're in the area! read more

The store is clean, organized and the employees don't bother you. I was able to find the 4 cds I wanted with ease.

I seem to never learn my lesson. I purchased, and sold here over the years. When sold, I was offered at least 10% less then competition. Then when I purchased used vinyl, it seems about 10% + over value. Their vinyl tends be terrible on average sonically for the price (IF SOUND MATTERS). My guess is they do not (LISTEN), and definitely do not clean prior to evaluation for sale. This response is with the consideration to spending over $100+ on one piece of vinyl here. When I made a purchase today, I seen one valued at $800 behind cashier. I would cringe if I took that home and listen to it !!! I believe a two star rating is more than fair! read more

I really appreciated the customer service here, especially from Taylor. I was looking for a specific album on release day and they went through the trouble of opening their shipments and updating the inventory so that I'd have the chance to grab it. I was so grateful. I called to let them know I have a hundred plus records to sell and asked if they are interested and if today was a good day. The Buyer there today told me he had about 3 people ahead of me so maybe come later. He said he needs to take a break too and recommend I get there at 3pm. I got there just before 3pm carrying in half of the records. Nathan said again that he had 3 people ahead of me but he'd take a Quick Look and see if it's worth my while to wait around. After actually looking at only 2 of 100 of what I had, he said he's gonna pass because they only buy pristine condition stuff because that is what their customers want. Only 2 of 100!!! I had some that were still sealed pristine but he based his analysis on just 2 records. First of all, nothing in their webpage says pristine only. He did not tell me on the phone pristine only. What a total waste of my time. I highly recommend staying away from this store based on my experience. This is not my first time selling records. I have never been turned away, let alone only having 2 records examined. read more

The music items are easy to search through, their prices are great, and the employees are pretty helpful WHEN YOU APPROACH them, that is. Great record store. Went on a Friday evening around 7pm, shop was a bit busy but really liked that aisles are spaced out between merchandise. Recently started vinyl collecting and purchased a Beethoven vinyl. While purchasing was able to ask about record store day and got a lot of information from the associate ringing us up. Very friendly and answered all our questions. Look forward to shopping there in the future. Would recommend. Love that there is parking right next door. read more

When to Rhino to sell some of my record collection. Took all 300 of them to be looked and and it only took them about an hour to decide which ones they wanted. Not a whole lot of time. No way they could do a proper evaluation of that many records in that time. They told me they had picked out 78 records and offered me $50 cash or $78 store credit. Way too low in my estimation. That's 64 cents an album. And some of them were multiple record sets. Took them all home with me. I'll sell them on ebay and get some reasonable prices for them. I've checked and all my records have sold on ebay. Don't try to sell them your records. You'll get nothing close to fair value. read more
