First and foremost sorry to the cashier I kind of snapped at because it's not your fault you're just following protocol. As much as i love Rhino Records You throughly need to start putting your return policy in big bold writing so customer know that you guys DO NOT infact do any returns or cash back and ONLY EXCHANGES. Theres no absolutely reason that the return and exchange policy should be printed in 3x3 paper underneath the register if thats the case then you need to physically tell all your employees to let every customer know that you guys are FINAL SALE and NON RETURNABLE. The fact that i spent 109.48$ on two BOOTLEG copies of ANTI and not even official and you guys never mentioned to me that you will not do returns. Its just "oh well its on the bottom of the register " Not even the mention on FAQ's or anything is listed on the website for return policy. I wish i could give zero stars for this place. The store manager Anthony was not only rude but was very unprofessional at his job. We tried exchanging a record player WITH our receipt after being told we could do so, but because we were missing a couple styrofoam pieces, we couldn't even exchange it because he couldn't resell it. He also was yelling at me and my cousin telling us to "tell the truth" when it came to why my cousin was returning the item. Very aggressive and was not worth dealing with. read more

We came for Vinyl Day and we got here at 9am to hopefully get in after the reservations. My brother held our spot when I went to get them drinks. They let my brother in so he called me to have us come back. I asked the guy if I could go in or I did I have to wait again. The employee told me no because ehe couldn't verify I was there when I talked to him that morning and HE SAW ME IN LINE. He asked the other people if they would be upset that he let me in before them and they said no because they all saw me in line since this morning. Rhino Records is located in the Claremont Village. Parking is typically hard to find, so be ready to do a fair amount of cruising in search of a spot. The shop has a lot of great music, but I actually come here in search of the fun, quirky gifts they offer. The next time you stop by, check out their books and knickknacks. When you're my age, a visit to this store will be an immediate throw-back to a time I loved. Buying my first Beatles RECORD ALBUM....... or Elton John...... or Led Zeppelin....... or Cream. How about Blind Faith or Donovan? A record album, so that when you look on the back of it, there's a whole description of what's on the album. Those days are GONE, and it makes me sad........ But I can walk in here and smile big. I can flip through some golden oldies..... yes, my era of music, the GREATEST era of music BY THE WAY, the 60's and 70's, is alive and well in Rhino Records. Don't talk to me about the current musical trends, it's still rock 'n roll baby, all the way. Yeh, yeh, there's some talent out there now, of course, but it's not like MY amazing era of music. I almost cried seeing my beloved record album covers......and who knows, maybe some of MY previously owned record albums are in THIS store..... one never knows where they went after I sold them to a buy-back store. I'm on iTunes now, don't even own a turntable..... or record albums. I own plenty of music, yes, but nothing I can look at or read about. Sigh. Anyway, you can get anything you want in here..... comedy albums, movie soundtracks, music of all kinds.... they don't discriminate. They even have CD's. Even better, I saw a bunch of turntables, and if you're my age, you'll remember we used to call them "record players." It's a really cool place, and I enjoyed being in here....... it brought me back to my younger days.... and I'll do whatever I can in whatever way to make that happen. I'm such an ungrateful bastard. I've been coming here since I was in college back in the early 90s and I'm just now writing a review. Of course, there wasn't Yelp back then. I also don't buy much here even though I think the world of this place. But that's only because I'm not a collector. If you are a music fan and like collecting old records and CD's, this is the perfect place. You can find some real treasure here if you look hard enough. Their vinyl selection is awesome and just seems to be growing. I even found some old cassette tapes of Adam and The Ants. Definite plus. Their selection of used movies isn't that big but what they have is usually pretty good. I picked up Monsters Crash the Pajama Party about two months ago. They have a small stage in the back of the store and have bands play on occasion. read more

I wish there were more of these small mom n' pop record shops, they are few and far between. The selection of music is excellent and also their book selection ( I scored on a Renoir book for only $20 and it has huge). I would definitely come back even though it's about 30 miles away from home but Claremont Village shops and eateries makes it all worth it! read more

He has taken me to Rhino for years and years, broadening my musical horizons each time! Rhino records is an adorable little record shop in the heart of Claremont. They have countless rows of music in every genre under the sun. I've come in looking for a Joan Jett vinyl, and I've also come in looking for a Tegan and Sara vinyl, and I've left the shop with both in hand. Not only do they have a bountiful collection of music, but the staff is always extremely kind and willing to be helpful in finding exactly what you're looking for. Rhino records is essentially a smaller, more local Amoeba. Rhino undoubtedly will always have a place in my heart and will always be my all-time favorite record store no matter what. There's not too much going on here that isn't going on at your average record shop. That being said, this is a cool spot to check out if you're in the area. The employees are nice and actually helpful. They havea decent collection of vinyl if you're in to that sort of thing. They've got a surprisingly limited variety of music. Obviously they've got hip hop, rock, country and some live dvds too. They also have collectibles, record players and other random things like mad libs. I'd like to see some more obscure genres like maybe a progressive rock section, or maybe a metal section. Perhapse i missed them? They're a little pricier than other places but you'll always find something to take home if you look in the right places. I snagged a new rammstein live in Paris dvd for like 20 bucks so that was a cool find. read more

Went to Rhino Records last week with my Dad for some good finds. We have been shopping for YEARS. Came across a Dead Can Dance record marked $16.99, as were all the others of that same record. Upon reaching the register, it rung as a different and more expensive price. The guy at the register said the lowest he could sell it to us for was $19.99 when all of that same record were clearly marked $16.99. He told us that this wasn't his store and there was nothing he could do about it. He did not bother to call over a manager to do the ethical thing and give us the price that it was marked. Spent about an hour here with my boyfriend looking for weird shit to listen to on the vinyl record players. Most of the records we wanted to listen to were sealed. I've been here before and could seriously spend a whole afternoon just looking through the cd selection. They also have a cool book selection with the farthest left bookshelf column having books on clearance and the farthest right columns having hip shit, like Chuck Palahniuk and Edgar Allen Poe. They actually have a bigger selection of Palahniuk books than my local Barnes and Noble. All the posters are on display bordering the interior of the record store. They also have this section thats full of knick knacks you'd find at Hot Topic or Spencers. It's weird. Not really. But why? read more

I feel bad leaving Rhino Records two stars, since I cut my teeth here on alternative records while smoking in their parking lot as a teenager growing up I the 90s. This place was the shit back in the day. Record store appearances (Butthole Surfers), performances (Dance Hall Crashers), and flyers for every local show, even if it was just a gig at the YAC (youth activity center). Fast forward 20 years. I'm an adult. With a disposable income. That still holds onto my adolescent roots. Musically anyway. I may not live the neighborhood anymore, but I still visit it. And you know what? This store sucks now. I bought four sealed LP's last week, and both of them had scratches on them. One wouldn't even play. I was dumb enough to throw my receipt away, but I wouldn't even bother trying to return it, as the cashier refused to take the hundred dollar bill I tried to pay him with. Target had no problem taking it. Not cool. For future vinyl purchases I'll just shop on Amazon with less hassle and headache. And for punk rock purchases, Dr. Strange Records in Alta Loma. This store has a good variety of vinyls, compact discs, and DVDs to choose from. Some of them are even in mint condition. Nevertheless, I did not purchase anything, since I had a very tight budget. Still, for people who are collectors, or enjoy old records, I would recommend a visit to this store. I might purchase some items, next time, when I visit the store. read more

From a vinyl record standpoint I would steer clear of this black hole. Trying to sell records - expect to get low balled. Trying to buy records - better bring your entire bankroll. Rhino attempts to capitalize on the rich, hip and college crowds to sell new and used records for much higher than average prices while selling other Thrift Store quality records for $3-$5. They also stock toys, stickers, cds, books, posters, and dvds. I went in to sell 6 USED VG+ records including: Modest Mouse "King Rat" limited single, Bob Dylan Greatest Hits 2, Hawkwind Space Ritual Vol. 1 double blue colored vinyl, Why? Elephant Eyelash, Madlib Medicine Show #1, and Wilco - The Whole Love. I was offered $20 cash or $28 store credit for ALL OF THEM while the store would turn them around and make over $100 easy. Way to make the customer feel valued folks. This store is the perfect example of why customers avoid shopping in person and instead go online to do smarter shopping. (Btw the Hawkwind record just sold on ebay for $28 alone) I head over to The Glass House Record Store for a better selection, fair prices, and a more attentive staff. But if you want to pay more, get less, get ignored, get ripped off, and blend in with the cool kids abounding throughout hipsterville Claremont then Rhino Records is your spot. read more

Damn it I love this place, I never buy DVDs at stores cause I figure I can find them cheaper online but I found 2 DVDs that I had to buy on the spot, one was Wonder Shozen Season 1 used, which is the craziest and funniest show ever, for $11.99. I also found South Park Bigger, Longer and Uncut used for $4.99. So I love this store already enjoying many laughs. Also they have an extensive music collection tons of cds and vinyl. In addition they have some great books here. And if you are a stoner lots of funny gag toys, shirts and marijuana props. The service was also great and friendly. read more

Working at a small ma-and-pa video store for many years gave me an appreciation for smaller business. My modus operandi is to go and support them in the midst of all the market grabbing the big boys, in their respective consumer fields, try and gobble up. I love shacks posing as video stores, and ramshackled huts that double as record shops. Along with their sense of independence and indifference to the modern era, which seems to be bigger equals better, they have a charm about them. Finding one of these stores, is like going into a thrift shop and finding that perfect shirt, jean, jacket, or sweater. This store played the part of "indie record store" to a tee. You even have the pretentious-looking, presumably early 20s, clerks behind the counter. The one who rang me up was actually pretty nice, though. :) The music they blasted through the store speakers is quite refreshing to the music they play at, say, a Best Buy music department. When playing the right music, it ehances the music-shopping experience. (If you think about it, it's actually good for business.) One album they were playing sounded really good, and I wasn't familiar with the artist. If I wasn't rushing right before being rung up, I would've remembered to ask who they were. As far as I know, there are only 2 Rhino Records in existence. The one in Claremont opened up in 1976, by the Rhino label itself. But aside from being a few in number, they carry movies and music, used items of both, vinyl, and other memorabilia. One of my previous reviews extolled the virtues of Rockaway Records, in Silverlake. Rhino Records also gets 5 stars because it carries the same appeal, but is also bigger and more spread out inside. More fung to the shui, if you will. I spent about an hour in the location, but heaven knows I've could've been in the store for 2 times that, maybe longer. I should've checked to see if they had listening booths. Here's the bounty I scored: Here Space Holiday - Home is Where You Hang Yourself ($6.99) The Magic Numbers - s/t ($7.99) Newton Faulkner - Hand Built by Robots ($4.99) Interpol - Turn on the Bright Lights ($8.99) The White Stripes - De Stijl ($9.99) All together, I spent $42.16. Not bad. It would've been more had I not put back the Mazarin, Jason Falkner, Cabaret Voltaire, Rentals, Josh Rouse, and who knows what other cd's back.
