I'm truly impressed! Seriously. I only ordered dessert, but I tell you what... dishes here create truly complex flavor combinations. Just layers and layers of flavor. The toasted almond butter cake is unlike anything I've had before. It has a grainy texture from pulsed almonds and just enough butter to keep it delicate and rich without being too heavy. And the surprise vanilla bean filling is incredible. The blueberries really round out the cake. Who knew that yuzu and sorbet and berries would be the perfect combination? Mmmmm... It's sooo good served warm. Wow! What a great mix of flavors. The chef is top notch. I'm completely floored. The rustic farmhousey feel here is just like home. And the attention to detail with quality linens and fresh flora is the reason why customers flock to this spot. Well, plus its on some prime real estate in Pack Square. I came in on a happenin' Friday night and was seated outdoors next to their fabulous fern. Oh man, I'm seriously impressed with their happy fern? What a sick love affair. The street entertainers were great and the servers were very attentive despite the rush and distractions of a busy area. This is a nice higher end dining option in a mostly casual city. Our party of 6 was sat in the front of the restaurant and our table was nice. The cocktails are very good. Wine list is very nice. Somm helped me make a selection that I was very happy with, an inexpensive cab franc. The sparkling rose was also delicious. The food is very good. I had the local trout with squash and it was delightful. The steak "was good" per my husband, maybe a little over cooked and small portions. We had appetizers that were great but can't remember what they were. The service left something to be desired. Our server seemed very new so we tried to give her some grace. Sommelier made up for it. Rhubarb is a Farm to Table restaurant in downtown Asheville. During a recent trip, I had one of the best meals that I've had in Asheville. That is saying a lot considering Asheville has an awesome selection of restaurants. We actually ended up coming here after being told that there was a long wait at Curate. The Food: The food here was off the charts. They had a pretty serious selection for a farm to table place with a rotating menu. Most farm to table restaurants only have a handful of entree selections. That was not the case at Rhubarb. My wife and I ordered the cheese plate as an appetizer. They had a good selection of cheeses and good spreadables as well. For my entree, I ordered the burger with pimento cheese and pickles. It came on a sweet potato bun. The burger was cooked to perfection and the pimento cheese, which was made in house, was creamy and applied liberally. I think my favorite thing about my meal was the hand cut fries. They were crispy and you could tell that they were freshly made. The Service: The service here was excellent. As we were seated, our waitress took the time to explain their farm to table concept. She made recommendations, and she was very knowledgeable on each dish on the menu. Atmosphere: We sat outside on a beautiful fall day. We got so fortunate getting a seat in this crowded place. We were in town for one night only and wanted to try out multiple spots. Rhubarb was on the docket for course two - drinks & salad. When we walked in we were instantly asked if we had a reservation by a sweet young lady, which we did not. I was worried this was going to be an issue. But being the lucky ladies we are, there were only two seats left in the bar area. Score!! I love the rustic, industrial design of this place. It was cozy, but didn't feel claustrophobic. The lighting was great and I just overall loved looking around at all the details of this place. Our bartender was fun and friendly as well. For my cocktail I ordered 'The Yardbird' which is Rittenhouse Rye, Fresh Lemon, Dry Vermouth, Fig & Five Spice Syrup. It was oh so good! A sipping pleasure for sho! Our salad was equally divine! While in town for my best friend's wedding, we decided to have dinner at Rhubarb the night her parents arrived. Immediately as we walked up to the entrance I was smitten by the sinage and the little covered patio area for eating and people watching. The inside was just as delightful--totally my style with high ceiling beams, iron, wood, and picnic benches incorporated! The menu was farm to table, which I always look for when visiting new areas. There were tapas for sharing and also salads and main courses followed with desert. They had an extensive list of wines and craft beers, many local to the area. We settled on a merlot bottle for the table from NC. The tapas courses were quite good, although due to the size I would not recommend an entire tapas meal here. That would add up quite quickly. Our server suggested 3 tapas for the table to share, a salad, and everyone getting a main course. We followed what he said and we all pleased with the amount of food. I particularly enjoyed the steak and the trout main courses. The chocolate ravioli was a unexpected twist for desert which I also loved. Kind of stuffy. They are pretty proud of their prices, but the quality doesn't warrant the small portions. Ordered the Cure and Cheese, the bread bowl (which never came out) and the Brussels which were okay but unevenly cooked...the Cure and Cheese was pretty bad and very scant 2 pieces of meat, 2 of cheese and we left stuff... which speaks volumes. While visiting Asheville, I wanted to head to a farm to table place since I'd heard so much. Rhubarb was recommended by a few people so we headed there. Between two people we got three "medium" plates--the burrata, Mongolian lamb ribs, and shrimp as well as one large plate--the flounder to split. The burrata and especially the bread along with it were amazing! The Mongolian lamb ribs were also interesting. The flounder was pretty meh though. It was more or less flavorless--kind of just tasted like the wood they cooked it on! Overall a bit disappointing but since everything else was delicious I'd definitely recommend Rhubarb just maybe don't order the flounder! read more

Some pros and cons. Pros: 1. The lamb ribs were outstanding. Perfectly rendered. The meat practically falling off the bone. I wanted to lick the sauce off the plate afterwards, the perfect blend of savory and tang from the rhubarb. 2. Rhubarb and rye cocktail. well balanced flavor profile. Recommend! 3. Duck was delicious. Most of the skin was crispy but a few chewy pieces, could have used an extra minute of searing. Tender, moist, would order again. 4. We asked for a side of the date/rhubarb chutney that I noticed on another dish and ate it with the duck. That was the real star of our meal! I would buy jars of it if they sold it. 5. The dessert. If you order anything here, it should be the Rhubarb and rye custard. I almost cried it was so good. And I did lick the plate clean. Creamy, tart, savory, the perfect amount of sweet so as not to over power the tartness of the rhubarb. No element in this dish had to compete with the other. It was perfectly balanced. I am going back today again just for this dessert. Cons- 1. We sat at the chefs table and watched the chefs cooking. One chef had one glove on but used her bare fingers to scrape the serving spoon and then returned that spoon the the food bowl she'd use for the next plate. I also watched her drop some food on the counter, used her bare fingers to scoop it up, and dumped it back in the bowl to be used for the next plate. This seems unhygienic and just plain gross. She also had long hair hanging down that dangled over the food she was plating. 2. Grits were a bit undercooked and too crunchy for my liking. Unremarkable in flavor. 3. Wait staff was a bit pretentious and overfamiliar. I didn't appreciate our waitress saying the f-word so casually while talking with us. Maybe I'm old fashioned but I prefer more professionalism when I'm at a fancy restaurant. Overall, I would recommend and I will be eating here again! read more

We ate outside at Rhubarb on a Saturday night and while the food was quite tasty and the waitress lovely, the meal was miserable as there was street preacher outside with an extremely loud amplifier rapping and screaming for the entire duration of our meal. It was so loud that we could barely hear each other speaking. A woman nearby commented that her ears were bleeding from the noise. We were told he is there every weekend. So be advised and perhaps eat inside or go during the week. As far as the food is concerned, for starters - the Gnocchi was delicious, the burrata yummy (especially the bread). The hush puppies were light and fluffy. Cheese tray was fine, the cucumber soup was bitter (we did not like it). For these prices and the hype, I'd expect better service and food execution. The tone was set when we arrived at our scheduled reservation time to be told to wait, so we scattered to the nearest crevice hiding behind a coat rack for fifteen minutes to stay out of the way. This place is crammed, no place for three to stand around and wait. When we were finally sat, my seat was still warm from the previous patron. A side effect of the overly stuffy, in more ways than one, atmosphere, I'm sure. Ravenous, we ordered the pimento pups and oysters Benton immediately. The pimento pups are hush puppies that come with a side of thousand islands dressing, an alright nibble but nothing noteworthy that they need to be called anything but hush puppies. The oysters Benton is a take on oysters Rockefeller, but the cornbread topping completely obliterates any showcase of the oyster underneath. And, you only get four half shells, whatever happened to a cool half dozen? For the main, after waiting twenty minutes between courses, our next course arrived where my husband had the trout and I had the quail. I see what you were attempting to do here, Rhubarb, and would have been a delicious dish if my quail wasn't beyond over cooked. The quail jerky encrusted a smooth, flavorful stuffing. Everything I've ever been told about turkey is to never stuff it, or else the meat will dry out. Apparently, the same is true for itty bitty quails. For the trout, I took one bite and couldn't do more as it immediately evoked thoughts of fresh spring grass, a flavor I wasn't at all prepared for in the cold winter month of December. 3 stars as I was really looking forward to Rhubarb during a random trip to Asheville, but what a disappointment. The interior was lovely - modern and yet homey, a little upscale and yet relaxed. The service could not have been any better. Simply spot on. The cauliflower soup was just the tiniest bit chunky, which was good because it highlighted the character of the featured vegetable, which might get lost in a silky smooth offering. An olive oil drizzle provided a rich earthiness. But the real kicker was the generous dollop of black walnut pesto. To me, almost any pesto is good pesto, but the chef deserves high marks for this particular concoction, which imbued the soup with a scintillating dark magic. The hushpuppies had a dark brown, thick seasoned outer layer which packed an awesome, satisfying crunch. The inner layer was soft but a little chewy and featured just the right amount of salty, creamy, spicy pimento cheese. The two-layered hot hushpuppy, when dipped in the cool, light pink and flavorful comeback sauce, was a multifaceted palate tingler that delivered a decadent feast. read more

I would be remiss if I did not suggest you try this restaurant. Situated in downtown, right across the street from Pack Square is one of the best high end eateries in Asheville. Friendly and knowledgeable staff make every experience wonderful. There is plenty of indoor and outdoor seating, but reservations generally need to be made weeks in advance! My wife and I had a selection of incredible flavors choosing to work through several small plates for dinner. They also have a very decent wine selection and their Very Dirty Martini...is! We started with Pimiento Pups, worked our way through some Heritage Pork Meatballs, tasted 3 cheeses on the Local Cheese plate that included Blanche, YB Farmstead and Lamb Chopper, did the BCF Pork Belly and Rappahannock Oysters Benton and rounded off the meal with the Ultimate Brownie dessert of the night. We were waiting for our reservation at another restaurant, and we decided to stop into Rhubarb for a drink. The bar was pretty busy, but we were able to sneak into two seats as someone else got up. This is a good, crafty and creative type of cocktail bar. You can order little snacks and stuff, but we weren't there to eat. They had different types of ingredients I'm always excited to see on a menu. Things like cinnamon fig cordial, or ginger carrot drinks. I played it safe with a locally-made cider, but my fiance ordered something spicy and mezcal-y. Overall, it's a great little cocktail bar, and the restaurant menu looks pretty decent! read more

Our experience at this restaurant started out great and I wanted to love it but it really came down to the food. We loved the atmosphere and the service was spot on. We ordered the strawberry burrata. We both loved it and it was very unique. Will definitely be replicating at home. We both had drinks that were just okay. Our main courses was the reason this restaurant got only two stars. I got the flat iron steak and my husband the fish with crab. Both were so salty! Both alp tasted like someone was heavy handed with some kind of herb. My guess is oregano? Overwhelmingly salty and the herb overpowered everything on the plate.. I grew up on a farm and if you claim to be farm to be farm to table the food should be the star. Not the case unfortunately. All we could taste was salt and herb. read more

The food here is really superb. We started with the freshly baked bread basket with an easy-spreading herbed butter (and a really nice touch that we took the remaining bread with us (it was that good!) and they put in the bag extra butter for us). We also enjoyed the rosemary sea salt almonds as a starter; these were so tasty! I highly recommend you order these. For my main I had the sunburst trout, with peas and butter beans, and it was excellent. The trout was perfectly done and the flavorful ingredients on the plate worked very well together. There are a lot of highly rated restaurants in compact downtown Asheville and we chose this one as we liked the location "in the heart of it all" and the small outdoor patio where we were seated. Unfortunately their patio is adjacent to an outdoor public space with benches where both street performers (fun!) and the homeless congregate. The body order wafting over our way was strong and an unpleasant addition to our dining experience. Obviously, not the restaurant's fault. We've been wanting to try this restaurant for a while so decided to go for our anniversary. It was a "mixed" experience. Our server was welcoming and attentive. Started with a cocktail "what's up doc" was delicious. Charcuterie plate was outstanding, though the person who delivered it didn't take the time to really describe it and was uncertain of the cheeses. To me the description is part of the experience of the plate. Luckily our server did an in-depth description. We had the rhu bread/butter which was tasty but I think overpriced. We opted for a glass of wine since corkage was $25. We'll enjoy that bottle we brought at home. Husband had the chicken which was tasty but a bit dry. I had the steak and was excited about the side accoutrements. I ordered medium rare. The steak was very, very rare. I'm reluctant to "complain" but I did send it back. On the second go it was still not really medium rare but I wanted to catch up with my husband's pace and not eat alone. We told our server and she did send the manager over. The manager was gracious and offered another entree. I passed again because I didn't want to eat alone. She wanted to make it right. I probably should have taken up her offer of another entree. Everything on the plate was cold and I didn't find the gravy, mustard seeds or egg yoke purée. The potato "medley" seemed to be a hunk of one potato. They did give us a free dessert which was a nice gesture. I would have given fewer stars but our server and manager earned the stars but experience overall on our anniversary was a let down. read more

There was also a trumpet player out front giving us great ambience for the duration of lunch. We started with the strawberry- rhubarb donut. It was phenomenal!! We also got the Ramp Cruffin and it was buttery and delicious as well. Hen I had the Shrimp and Grits. Alex, our server was the best we have had in Asheville during our trip. Saturday, April 2nd - lunch at the bar was AMAZING ! Thank god the chic tapas bar next door had no staff and turned away guest after guest from a half full dining room. I've been on several occasions over the past couple years and each time food has been a bit on the pricier side but not out of control for the amazing downtown location and impeccable service provided by the friendly staff! Parking can be tricky but Pack's Square is only a short walk from the AC Hotel garage, Aloft garage, and Rankin Avenue garage with the first hour being free and additional time only running $1.25 per hour. Dining room is beautifully decorated and is a wonderful room to bring a date, celebrate a birthday or special occasion. Bar area is on the small side but full service none the less and I've found almost immediate seating open on busy nights for a party of two. Cocktail list is ever-changing but I've always found something to my liking. Wine and beer list is on par with other finer dining establishments and should have an item to satisfy even the pickiest folks. Patio space is great for people watching and one of the city's prime time locations to enjoy one of our cities awesome buskers! Please be prepared...the bench just on the other side of the patio fence typically has some our homeless/transient population hanging out looking for coin...if you have leftovers...give them away or prepared to be asked for a handout...most are polite about asking and with the heavy foot traffic someone will not want to carry around leftovers...it's best to just overindulge anyway...right?!?! read more

We went here on New Year's Eve, being sure to make a reservation beforehand. We were visiting from out of town, so we didn't want to end up hungry with no place to eat. We were seated immediately but for making a reservation, the seating option wasn't the best option available. We came here based on a recommendation, so I was sad that not a lot of items on the menu spoke to me. We splurged and got the shared $125 ribeye. It was good, but not life changing. First time diner here. My friends took us to this location with high expectations as the chef is a five-time finalist of the James Beard Award. The ambience was very thoughtful and rustic; however, the food experience was unfortunately very disappointing. We first ordered the Ricotta Gnocchi and the Gumbo z'Herbes. Both dishes came to the table room temperature and/or cold. The rice in the gumbo was tough and tasted days-old. There was no sausage nor vegetables. The gnocchi was room temperature and lacked flavor. We sent both dishes back explaining our concerns only to have them replaced with equally cold dishes. We eventually sent both dishes back in hopes the entrees would salvage the situation. We ordered the following entrees: Wood Roasted Ashley Farms Smoked Chicken. While I enjoyed the barley, the chicken was sadly warm at best. Whole Wood Fired Sunburst Trout: while this fish was warmer than the other dishes, it was very uninspired and not consistent with the quality you would expect from this establishment. Service: our immediate server was very apologetic and professional. However, we were at no point greeted by management (that we knew of). That being said, they did comp our ticket for the appetizers. Overall, it was concerning that staff were not more concerned about the quality of the dishes. We were very excited to try this restaurant as our friends had such a great experience previously; however, I fear the significant strains of the service industry may have taken their toll. read more

We heard good things about Rhubarb and were eager to try it when visiting a friend who lives in Asheville. The ambience was pleasant and the meal was good up until we got the Bavette steak entree. The steak was impossible to cut it was so tough. When we mentioned it to our server she rationalized it by saying it was the cut of meat. Three of us had what was close to a $500 dinner bill with drinks and wine. We could have made an issue of the steak but chose not to end the evening on a negative note.
