Horrid experience! We we're a pre-booked group of 20 and really expecting a wonderful time. We we're escorted to a non-rescript room behind a wonderful bakery operation on our way in. They were baking fresh breads and we were mesmerized by the wafting smells. So we start off thinking we can't wait for some fresh baked bread. Ohh Noo, that breads for the front house diners, not you! You didn't pre order to have bread?? You must be kidding. Next, we requested an Ice Tea, and we get an answer that we don't think it's available. After a third request it finally showed up. One star down for noise-level....our table was right in front of speakers (several are, and it's a smallish space) and we couldn't hear our server describe menu items. Happily, they were very accommodating when we asked to change tables. Two of us had "Herbed Heritage Pork Sausage," lamb ribs, hush puppies, and a whole, wood-fired snapper. Highly recommend sharing dishes, as you'll want to taste as much as possible. All ingredients are amazing--fresh, and as if lovingly raised by hand. Probably are! The scallion hush puppies are AMAZING--simple, but great texture variation between moist and tasty interior, and perfectly done exterior. Lamb ribs were strong in lamb flavor (which we like). Herbed sausage (one comes in the order) was fantastic. And how the heck did they get a whole snapper beautifully moist, over wood? Its accompanying tomatoes were smoked, and wonderful, as was the peanut-pickle-relish. Dessert was a little disappointing, but that only means it was 8/10. Something described as a "drizzle" was actually an entire top layer of a cake ("tres leche" I think--can't quite remember); cake itself was moist but not that flavorful. "R-Bar Cocktails" are fun, with things like honey, blackberry, peach, rosemary and many others popping in to visit old favorites like Old Fashioned, Boilermakers and Collins'. read more

First let me say that the hostess and wait staff were perfect, attentive and friendly. However, the food was just ok - we have been wanting to eat here for a while and finally had the chance. The food came out a little on the cooler side like it had been sitting - it was not bad but not the level a top restaurant like that should be - we probably will not be back. First off: Rhubarb was very good. Second: It was a little bit disappointing. See, Rhubarb sounded on paper like an Asheville restaurant that was too good to be true, at least for the wife and me: James-Beard-finalist chef, local ingredients, Appalachian influences, great downtown location, attractive decor and ambience. That's a lot to live up to, and Rhubarb didn't quite get there, at least not on this single night. We shared the "House Cure"--"country" pate, smoked wreckfish rillette, head cheese, mustard, dried-fruit compote of some sort, and house-made crackers The wreckfish rillette was terrific, the pate a little less so, and the head cheese actually kinda bland. As charcuterie plates go, a solid one, but not as good as some others we've had elsewhere. I ordered the Heritage Farm pork collar, which was accompanied by sweet and sour collard greens, red peas, salsa verde, and "salt and vinegar" chicharrone. Pork collar was served in a reasonably generous portion, and had good flavor. But I thought it was actually a little overdone, slightly dry and stringy. And the accompaniments were cooked pretty much perfectly, but seemed seriously undersalted (not a complaint I usually have in restaurants). (The wife had the same complaint about her fish dish, although she said it was otherwise really great.) The chiccarrone was satisfyingly crunchy, but also seemed to come up short in the flavor department. Plating of everything was very attractive. I've only been for lunch but if it's any indication of the rest of Rhubarb's offerings, I will definitely be back. It's a really cozy space converted out of an old store and my wife were seated in a nook by one of the doors leading out to the very comfortable outdoor patio in front of the place. The service was great and the food was simple and delicious: peach gazpacho, the market plate featuring roasted okra, squash and beets, heirloom tomatoes, goat cheese, quinoa and fried bread and then the burger my wife ordered. LONG REVIEW WARNING! BUT WHAT AN EXPERIENCE!! We sat at the chef's bar and had not only the best meal ever, but also the best dining experience ever- I mean EVER. The restaurant came highly recommended by a colleague for their farm-to-table, clean eating goodness. It did not disappoint. We started with the roasted beet salad and watched as Alex put it together. We hit a packed house on a Saturday night and watching the chefs dance through each order was nothing short of spectacular. John, the head chef, would call out the table and order, Derek would check in with each station on that order to make sure everything came out timed perfectly. " 2 minutes on the shrimp? Make it 4! " Matt on the fire brick ovens turned out incredible trout and slid over to the grill as well. Leaha on the cast iron pans and grill flipped amazing vegetables, swordfish, and too many concoctions to name. Meanwhile Alex attentively put together salads, grilled shrimp, and a bunch of other things. The beet salad was possibly the best I've ever had, with three different kinds of beets. Anna our waitress was perceptive. Having brought me a white wine to taste that I decided was too sweet, she expertly suggested the perfect red when I completley changed course and went red. For a main course I had the Wood grilled BCF bevette (steak) . I like my steak RARE, like blue rare. Recently in Santa Fe I thought I had the best steak ever - nope. When I heard John call our table number and steak, I looked at Donny on the grill and said, "Not just rare - blue." I found out later that he took what was to be my steak off and started again. And it was so delicious and cooked to my personal perfection. He sliced it after cooking (everything they presented was artwork) which also kept it from continuing to cook. It melted in my mouth! My husband had the wood roasted whole sunburst trout - moist, delicious bits of love in my mouth. It came with a remoulade sauce so subtle and delicious - we tried to figure out the spices but failed. I added a little on my steak, too, and that was a lovely combination. Meanwhile the dance of the chefs went on around us. No yelling, always polite, helping each other when one station got swamped or needed ingredients. It could have been an ugly, stressful situation, but the teamwork made the dream work. Oh sure, it must have been stressful, but they handled it so professionally! Finally, after watching Alex make goat cheese burrata all night, we ordered it for dessert. Yes, dessert. My husband thought I was nuts, "Aren't you stuffed yet?!" He tried to persuade me to just have the grilled bread part of it - no way. And he had to admit, I was right. The goat cheese combined with marinaded grapes and some kind of muscadine jam and sauteed red onion made the perfect combination of subtle sweetness and rich cheese that, had I been home, I would have licked the bowl. When they called us, she said she was going to charge us $90 for a cancelled reservation. The hostess was not accommodating, even after we explained we were unable to get through due to lack of service on the mountain. I visited Aville with my two teenagers. We were glad to be able to make a brunch reservation at Rhubarb. The atmosphere is so nice, and the staff even nicer! Food-wise, we had a couple things that were beyond our expectations, and the other items were about average. We loved: -Biscuits. WOW. We could have just eaten those. We've never had any biscuits like them. The jam was delicious as well. - Fried Chicken Biscuit. Again, unique and absolutely perfect. Even my non-chicken-loving daughter loved it! I would go back just for this. - The mocktails were fun too. We had a Catch 23 that I really liked. And my daughter really liked the Bad Art soda (note, it is not very sweet). We also tried the hamburger. It was dry and just ok. Maybe order medium? Fries were fine. Sausage was ok. We also tried the omelette. We just had dinner at Rhubarb for our first night in Asheville. The ambiance was rustic and welcoming. Our server (Riley) was very friendly, kind and helpful. The food was excellent. They have some unique combinations that really excited our tastebuds. We had the pimento cheese hush puppies, Brussels sprouts, goat cheese burrata on toast, and the roasted chicken. The pimento cheese hush puppies are served with a comeback sauce and I would certainly come back for those! The burrata was bright and creamy with a variety of fresh greens. The chicken was so tender, flavorful, and juicy! I highly recommend this place if you are visiting Asheville! read more

Disappointed: Having been to Rhubarb before I booked a special birthday dinner for my daughter tonight. I stated it was her birthday 4 times, first when I made the reservation, second when I called three days ago to confirm we were coming and third as we were being seated. At the end of the meal there was no acknowledgement and our waitress said no one had told her. Second comment, the portions have shrunk to tiny. Nothing like getting served a minuscule portion on a huge plate. Maybe they are trying to be chic, but it's not working. We ordered a brownie ice cream dessert and the single scoop was served at the bottom of a dark deep soup bowl, an extremely poor presentation. There are so many great restaurants in Asheville. Rhubarb will certainly not be our choice next time. read more

They have the very best fried chicken and biscuits bar none. The chicken crust is crispy but not greasy and the chicken is so tender you can cut it with a fork. The biscuit was good but not really a flaky southern one. Still no complaints. All was delicious and the service was great. There was plenty of outdoor seating and the wait staff was masked. Hm not sure what all the hype is about for this place. Started with the salad, basically a large bowl of lettuce with a few blueberries and walnuts, and dressing with next to no flavor. Overall just lacking imagination. Also tried the burratta goat cheese, which was a pretty good dish. Next, i had the burger, which was good, just a solid burger, cooked nicely, nothing really to set it apart though. Wife had the gnocci, beautiful presentation but not delicious, it was ricotta filled, which just ruined the texture of the gnocci, made it somewhat mushy and creamy, not the soft pillowyness that gnocci should be. read more

Visited Rhubard for Saturday brunch. Decent selection of craft local beer, mixed drinks, and mimosa/Bloody Mary options. We skipped alcohol and dove into food - ordering the Toad in the Hole and a Brunch Burger. The Burger was large, juicy, and very filling. Toad in the Hole had enough food to get you ready for the day. Service was great and the outdoor patio was a nice touch. Reservations are accepted but we're not needed for a 10am brunch in May. read more

Wanted to come here since we arrived at Asheville but it was always packed and no reservation at the moment but we got lucky one day and we got to taste their amazing food. For appetizer we ordered oysters and pimiento cheese pops , the oysters weren't our favorite they were very bland while the pops were amazing and their sauce even better. For small plates we had the mongolian ribs are a must try and also we ordered as the big plate their half chicken which feeds two people and cant describe how tasty it is . We also ordered four different drinks and my favorite is the one that is with beet cant recall the name but it was sooo good loved it read more

Great service and great location but we were underwhelmed w/ food. Appetizers were definitely shareable which was nice. Burrata was good. Quail was ok. Gumbo was Definitely not gumbo and the gnocchi was underdone. Only one salad option which was disappointing, as I love a salad with dinner. And For the main course, I ordered the smoked chicken and it was a single chicken drumstick. Very odd. I think this place is on autopilot. It was not very busy on a Saturday night in May. The bartenders were engaging but our waiter seemed uninterested. The southern style oysters Rockefeller were good but were served lukewarm. We did enjoy the skirt streak. We tried this spot for the first time 10 days ago and everything just missed the mark. The menu was interesting but limited so we tried a couple different dishes to share.Duck wing appetizer came out cold and the heirloom tomato salad was mealy and terrible. No flavor and shocking given the fact that it's prime tomato season. It was most definitely a bad tomato. The roasted chicken had decent flavor but a bit dry and the roasted potatoes that came out with the chicken were absolutely inedible. Dry hard and not properly cooked. The only dish that was well made was the fish. Our waiter tried but seemed upset when we sent back the duck wings and never followed up with us. It was almost like he gave up. Even the kids meals were meh and only the Mac n cheese tasted well made. It's a shame bc it looked like a nice spot to try given the excellent food scene in Asheville. I hope they check their food quality control and improve their plates. I truly hate to give a bad review but it's important to keep the restaurants informed. We were excited about this spot and made reservations in advance of our trip. I'd say it was ok but nothing outstanding. The restaurant is quaint and had very cool features... an open wood fire, exposed brick, and a sweet patio. We started with the lamb ribs appetizer, which was way too fatty for me. For dinner we had the snapper for two and the beet salad. Both were good but nothing special - I've had similar elsewhere. I did like my drink - pineapple and curry flavors, but not sure that'd make it worth visiting again. Decent spot, but I wouldn't go out of your way to visit. read more

Farm to table restaurant in Asheville. Was there on a busy Saturday for lunch and was able to get a seat out on the patio after a short wait. Dog friendly and even little bowls that they fill with water for you - nice touch. Food was fresh and excellent, service as well. Definitely a worthy place to stop. read more

Would have been an awesome experience had the service been up to par. Food was good and the restaurant/atmosphere is beautiful. We went for a birthday celebration Sunday brunch with a party of six, my family is very understanding of restrictions and moderations that are in place right now. I personally know how stressful it can be to be a server, especially during this pandemic, that's why it's hard to leave this review. Our server never came back to ask how our food was or if we needed anything even though she passed our table multiple times. My dad ended up taking one for the team and trying to stop her by making eye contact which he did, asked politely for salt and pepper but we never got it. There were some other things she forgot as well, and we had to ask which made us feel like we were getting on her nerves. A simple "how is everything? Or is there anything I can get you?" just once would've been a game changer. I know there's a lot that goes on behind the scenes and this girl could've been just having a bad day but it genuinely seemed like she wasn't overwhelmed just apathetic. I would like to believe that it wasn't personal towards my family but it felt like it was. Again, the food was really good, but when the service doesn't match it, leaves a bad taste in your mouth. I'm not leaving this review to deter people from going because I know it was a one time experience with just one server but maybe so that management will see it and help their staff out. read more

Visited Rhubarb last weekend for a birthday with friends and had a very nice meal at Rhubarb. We sampled several dishes including cornbread, gnocchi, steak, burrata, and soup and everything was very tasty! Service was great and our sever took great care with my nut allergy. Only downsides were when they weren't able to split our check by individual items which is strange for a restaurant that serves small plates! My friend told the restaurant it was my birthday and they brought out a dessert with a candle but then charged us for it. We were under the impression the restaurant would give a complimentary dessert for a birthday but I guess not! Not a big deal but most nicer restaurants do that. We loved the Peanut and Butternut Squash soup and Crispy Brussels Sprouts. The Loaded Sweet Potato was good (heavy on the mushroom) and the Apple Brandy Streak was excellent.They were very accommodating to a group. Only downside was, we went during the Freeze of 2022, and were seated near the door. The draft every time someone entered or exited was freezing and was almost unbearable.
