Our server was attentive with frequent water refills and clearing the plates as soon as we were done with them. The inside of the restaurant is nice and neat, very spacious seating and tables that can fit many dishes on them. We ordered a bunch of dishes family style and all were reasonably priced and tasty. The standout for me was the Gai Manow- In the nicest way possible, it can only be described as an elevated chicken nugget. It's nostalgic and new at the same time, would recommend. Everything was so salty. In Japanese there's a term called "shio-karai" which means salty spicy. It's so salty that it feels spicy. That's how it felt to us. We got: Som tum pla raa: 1/5 blue crab was extremely salty. Papaya was also extremely salty. No flavor other than the salt, the cabbage helped. Hai manow: 2/5 also salty. Unfortunately don't remember much other than how salty everything was. We came here without reservation on a Sunday night and they accommodated us quickly. Been wanting to try this spot for so long so I'm glad I finally got to go! The gai manow is definitely worth the hype and is as good as it looks. Crispy chicken that's also tender and juicy on the inside with a delicious citrusy cream sauce and the most addicting crispy chinese broccoli! An amazing combo and super unique. I liked the sukho thai noodle as well but felt the flavor was too limey for me at first, though it grew on me as I ate more. The crispy pork is great and there's a large variety of toppings which was fun. I thought the pad keemao was just okay and too spicy (even though we got mild) -- maybe I just prefer pad see ew more. The eggplant was so crispy but not oily. And the tom kha was very flavorful, it was a perfect balance of savory, salty and sweet. For the entrees, we got the pork shoulder (kor moo tod), the grilled ribeye steak with green curry sauce (nuer marakot), and the sukho Thai noodle soup. The favorite main dishes were the pork shoulder and the sukho Thai noodles. Both were delicious! The appetizers and soup were good, but the pan-fried noodles were not. Service was very disorganized. Our server kept forgetting our orders, and after we had already ordered dessert and waited about 15 minutes, she came back to ask again if we wanted dessert. I understand she was the only server handling multiple tables, so I don't fully blame her. The bigger issue is the lack of overall customer service and management. When we arrived, there was no greeting, and when we left, there was no "thank you" or farewell. The owner was not friendly or helpful either. To make things more frustrating, an automatic 18% service charge was added, despite the poor level of service. A mandatory gratuity should reflect attentive and respectful service -- unfortunately, that was not our experience. My friend and I dined at Oraan for a second time recently and we can confirm that they make THE BEST Pad Thai in San Francisco. A bold statement, we know. The Pad Thai Kung Mae Nam ($22.95) easily serves 2-3 people. A heaping portion of noodles that are packed with flavor and topped with two tender giant river prawns. Another delicious dish we ordered both times was the Makuer Tod ($13.95), a flower-like sliced crispy fried eggplant. Quality was consistent between the two visits. One dish that fell short was the Ka-nom Jean, a mix-it-yourself dish of rice noodles, chicken curry paste, boiled egg, and veggies. Great food and just ok service. They kind of forgot about us and with such tiny water glasses we were sitting without water or the drinks we ordered for a while. Decided to try this Thai restaurant that is located where Mescolanza used to be. They have been opened a few months already and I have to say, the service was exceptional. The restaurant itself is decorated beautifully. Thai food is one of our favorite cuisines, so we are definitely comparing them to our other favorites in the area and the City. While some dishes were pretty good, we felt that some were very lackluster. Also because the price point of this restaurant is a few dollars signs above the average Thai restaurant, so we are definitely looking to see if this is "worth it". We got the Pad Thai Kung Mae Nam (Pad Thai with River Prawns). This dish looks impressive and tasted pretty good. Essentially you are eating mostly pad thai because the river prawn doesn't have much meat, and with two people and two prawns, we each got one. The pad thai itself is a little too sweet according to my husband, but I didn't mind it as much as it also balance with the sour taste that comes from the tamarind. We also got the Khao Mun Gai (Thai version of Hainanese Chicken Rice). While presented beautifully in a big tray lined with a banana leaf, comes with a chicken broth, garlic ginger rice (yummy), cucumber, and a soybean paste sauce, it was very underwhelming. The chicken itself was dry, feels overcooked. The soup tasted very "cup of noodle"ish according to my husband. I avoid it because I don't want the salty broth. The sauce itself is okay but nothing spectacular. Most disappointing is that there was no minced ginger sauce. Sorry to say but you can get better Khao Mun Gai at Rooster and Rice on Stanyan. The cucumber salad was good and refreshing. The Thai iced tea was okay. Seems a bit watered down but okay. So while we like the beautiful restaurant and the good service, the food is not impressive. We got an appetizer which was curry filled fried dumpling. Super filling, crispy and tasty. The Tom Kha soup was one of the best Tom Khas I've ever had and they did not skimp on any ingredients. Tons of meat and mushrooms. The pork shoulder was fried and the sauce was so good. It also came with sticky rice which I didn't need but is nice filler. Would've liked bigger pieces of lettuces to wrap the meat. Definitely recommend this place! read more
