[This review is based on their lunch plates ] We randomly came across Rice Box Kitchen from Yelp and glad we decided to check it out. The wifey and I came in for lunch and decided to order their two most popular dishes and compared. 1. Khao Mun Gai - This asian dish is super popular in Asia, also called Hainanese Chicken rice in some regions. The chicken was super moist and the rice was fragrant . Having lived in Singapore before, this chicken dish is as authentic as it gets. Definitely recommend. 2. Khao Moo Dang - Another popular asian dish with thick cuts of pork covered in Charsui sauce, in some asian regions this is also called BBQ pork. It is on the sweet side, so if you're sensitive to that, ask for it on the side. This was also delicious. What makes this place stand out are the amazing homemade sauces and great customer service. When you do a search for Asian restaurants in the Reno area, Rice Box Kitchen comes up as the first and there is very good reason for that. They are located in a small strip mall in Mid Town that is shared with a few other local businesses. There is a couple of outdoor tables and the inside dining room is small. We decided to order off the menu and my wife's favorite dish from Thailand is Khao Mun Gai, a type of Thai street food which consists of poached chicken served over flavored rice with some dipping sauce. I wanted the Mee Grop, but they were sold out so I went with Khao Mun Tofu, sort of like the Gai, but with tofu instead. The owner, Perapol, is full of enthusiasm and makes you feel welcome. He knows how to work the dining room and made sure all customers had what they wanted. Our orders came out in about 10 minutes and they both were beyond excellent! Both dishes had lots of flavor and were cooked perfectly, not overcooked. What I want to point out, like the owner told us, is that he wanted to focus more on street foods, which is harder to find outside of Thailand. Every Thai restaurant has pad thai, green curry etc so this was his way of taking it in a different direction. This restaurant also has all you can eat hot pots which seemed to be very popular while we were there. Perhaps I should not compare it with a different restaurant which is not even a local spot. My husband and I ordered takeout for lunch on Friday. Gabe greeted and took the order with a smile. We ordered the khao mun gai, the khao moo dang, and also got mochi bars. The khao mun gai had rich flavor and complemented the sweetness from the khao moo dang really well. The mochi bars came in four flavors and were delicious. Our favorites were the ube and matcha bars. I had to start my first ever Yelp review to rave about this place. My boyfriend and I have been to Rice Box Kitchen quite a few times, and everything is delicious and served by friendly, smiling faces. Some favorites include the fried chicken Khao Mun Gai - perfectly crisp chicken with a coconut-y rice (we don't even like coconut, but the rice is so good!) Of course I have to mention the dim sum, which is droolworthy (and a rarity in Reno). The mochi bars are also stellar - there are different flavors every week, and each one I've tried is just as tasty. Funfetti is a personal favorite - we purchased ~several~ of their pride-themed boxes with proceeds going towards Our Center. Perapol is an absolute sweetheart and so fun to talk to. What a wonderful experience! We came here today for the first time as part of The Common Thread Noodle Tour. The restaurant is a small space with four tables that seats four each, set in a fun & trendy atmosphere. We had such a fun time chatting with the owner, Perapol, when he stopped by our table. He explained that it was an unusually busy day for them. Perapol chatted with us about his previous restaurant in San Francisco and asked our opinions about some ideas he has for Rice Box. He hopes to include more dim sum on the menu too! The food was fantastic. Very flavorful and well balanced. We ordered the Coconut Curry Egg Noodle Soup (wonderfully spicy coconut broth), Tofu Mee Krob (tasty fried rice noodles with tofu), pork buns (the best quality pork I've had in a pork bun) and mochi bars (like eating a cake bar and mochi at the same time- yum!) Perapol and his sister also brought out one of his famous red curry tamale, a pandan pudding and extra pork buns on the house. Wow. I think my only wish is that the food was served on plates/bowls rather than takeout containers when dining in. This spot is a gem in the Reno dining scene. It's the only place in Reno that expands the traditional Thai food scene. I've had three dishes here: the Khao Soi, Khao Moo Dang and the Khao Mun Gai. The Khao Moo Dang is my personal favorite Thai dish. It's Chinese BBQ pork with a sweet and savory gravy. It's a traditional Thai street food and Perapol absolutely rocks it. It's savory, and sweet. Khao Soi: Northern Thailand's noodle dish. Plenty of ways to do it but Perapol's is sweet, rich and full of depth in the coconut curry. Khao Mun Gai: if you've been to Portland, you've probably had this dish from Nongs. Perapol's version is just as good, a little less garlicky than Nongs but it is fantastic. Tried this place finally after seeing all its delicious food on instagram. Service was lovely, everyone was warm and welcoming, and music was on point. Ate the Khai Soi Curry with Fried Chicken, and after the week I've had, I really needed it. Honestly, I feel restored. The flavors and spice were perfect for the cold weather (but honestly, I'd eat their food during the dog days of summer because it was that good). This place is like a breath of fresh air! They are currently doing a pack of rainbow mochi with half of proceeds going to Our Center, which is a wonderful initiative for the LGBT+ community in Reno. The staff is wonderfully inviting and engage with customers in a meaningful way. Food wise, I got the Khao Mun Gai, the version with fried chicken. The chicken is great, but the real star is the rice. It is delightfully light, with an addictive coconut flavor. Slices of cucumber complement the chicken and rice well. The food here is soooooo amazing. The customer service is also great. Their rice is something to die for and sometimes I have trouble choosing what to eat because it all tastes so good! It is also healthy, simple, and have a short wait time. I recently tried their new special ( garlic, ginger, and coconut rice with spam and 2 fried eggs on top) too good. This updated review is specific to their Shabu Shabu Box experience which is a 90-minute all you can eat hot pot! You email them to make a reservation. The experience involves a hot pot in the middle of the table with two kinds of broth, we got spicy and regular. Both broths were delicious but the spicy was my favorite! There is a menu that consists of appetizers, vegetables, meats, seafood, noodles, and dessert to choose from. The server explains how to order at the beginning if it is your first time. We tried a little bit of everything and had such a fun time! The food was amazing and it was the best meal to have on a cold winter night. All the food that you put into the broth cooks quickly, so you aren't waiting around long for it to get done. I'm giving this four stars instead of five because of the service. Despite how incredible all the food was, we had to wait a noticeably long time for multiple things and had to keep flagging down the server. He brought out all our vegetables and meat/seafood but never brought our noodles with everything else. After about 30 mins, we finally had to ask for them. Our water pitcher was not refilled until the end of the meal. The server did not come by very often to see if we needed to order more meats/veggies to add in. And we had to go up to the counter to ask for our card to be run because the server never came back to our table after dropping the bill off 15-20 mins prior. This was a bummer because the service was very good last time I was here for high tea dim sum. Let's talk about RiceBox and why I keep coming back. To me this place is like a comfort place instead of just a place that has comfort food because of all they have to offer. When it comes to the food, everything I've tried has been absolutely delicious. I've yet to order or receive anything that I've been disappointed by that was served poorly. For their regular menu, my go to for the longest time (I can be a creature of habit sometimes), was #2 Kha Moo Dang. This dish is a pork dish served over white rice while smothered in a sweet red sauce (name of sauce) with a side of cold slices of cucumber and a hard boiled egg sliced in half and (name of sauce) in a container aside. The first time I ordered this, the entree did look simple and not filling but I was proven wrong. This dish in particular, I enjoy because it's not greasy, the cucumber to me is like green tea after a meal, in terms of you end the meal on a light note and while the egg isn't seasoned, I absolutely enjoy having it with my last bites of pork and rice because I really enjoy the cold of the egg with the sweet and savory of the pork and rice. Other items I enjoy are the #X and #9 that are dishes with fried chicken. Again, these aren't greasy dishes and their fried chicken is served in slices but the crunch you get each and every time is just AMAZING! And for side dishes, you can't ever go wrong with pot stickers and garlic fries. They also make specialty drinks, hibiscus-pineapple tea, Thai lime tea, and Vietnamese coffee, that are so unique and just have absolutely beautiful colors. And for dessert they have mochi bites, kind of like mini cupcakes and not the ice cream. But these are great and like cute little surprises because they're always making new flavors! Their High Tea Dim Sum is an absolute must try if having an assortment of savory and sweet and trying new things is your thing. The menu changes on a monthly basis and is served with a side of tea or sangria. Their sangria is made in-house and can change on a weekly basis but it's sooo good and not strong enough to have you stumbling out of the place at the end of the meal. We've talked about the regular menu, High Tea Dim Sum, and just mention they also have Hot Pot (which is very good, just go and try it, make that reservation). But it doesn't end there! Every so often, Perapol (owner), will host a tasting menu filled with about ten tasting items with complimenting drinks. I was able to finally attend one, the FU Valentine's Day tasting menu, and everything was unique, so well presented and the decor was so cute! The other activity they host is Paint with a Queen and I absolutely LOVE attending those. Drag Queen Adonna Slay will host a painting session and prior to starting you get served a meal with sangria and throughout you get refills. Lastly, the staff. You can see how hard working they are and they are also super welcoming and kind. Anyways, they are absolutely worth checking out and deserving of their Yelp top 100 spot. read more

You have to eat here! The food is good and the staff are the best. The owner of the restaurant, Perapol, took the time to talk to everyone at the restaurant and he treats you like you're his friend. The menu changes depending on what day or time you come. On Sundays (which is when we ate here) they have High Tea Dim Sum and you have to make a reservation. They do not do their regular menu at this time. There's a preset menu and it changes every month. It includes a variety of small bites, tea, and sangria (unlimited!). There were two dishes which really stood out to me. The first was the fried chicken wings, it was drizzled with a Tom Yum aioli which was super flavorful. The second was the Chinese broccoli. Steamed to perfection, the right amount of hoisin, and it's topped with chicken skin cracklings which added a lot of flavor and texture. Yum! The sangria is on the sweeter side and was delicious. I highly suggest getting a side of their chili oil as well. On all other days they have their more consistent menu. If you come during lunch time you'll have the regular menu. Dinner time is only unlimited shabu shabu hot pot. Keep this in mind for when you visit so you know what food to expect! So excited that we finally have an authentic dim sum restaurant in Reno! The kind of restaurant that has push carts that you can choose from and where most of their dumplings are made in-house. A group of us went and ordered a bunch of different plates to share - we loved most all of them, including the shrimp hargow (shrimp dumplings), chicken and shrimp dumplings, shrimp toast, Bao buns. There was only one dish that we were not very familiar with - called "congee" - it was kind of like a porridge - we might be willing to give it another try. We enjoyed the Vietnamese iced coffee and hibiscus-pineapple Fresca drinks. The coconut flan was a stand-out dessert - WOW - so creamy and delicious - amazing - you must get it! With much anticipation, I made a reservation and went to this place for the first time for their hot pot night. We received our food, but most of the order was missing - we got no vegetables and no beef. It was the kind of thing where you assume that the waitperson walked away in order to get the rest of your food, except she never does. We also got no ladle to retrieve our food from the boiling broth. So my wife and I used our chopsticks to bail out our food in some weird version of the game "bobbing for apples." Some other waitperson noticed at some point that we didn't have any sauce for our meal and asked if we had any sauce. We said no, so we got some. When we successfully fished out our food from the broth and were sitting there empty-handed, the waitperson came back and casually asked how everything was. I told her that there were many things wrong with our meal and listed them. She said OK and started casually walking away. I then told her more sharply that this was the worst restaurant experience I had had in a long time. She said OK, let me get the owner. The owner asked if there was anything wrong, and I told him that there was a lot wrong, and again listed the problems, including "we didn't get any ladles so we had to resort to using our chopsticks to fish out our food." I used a tone of voice that's probably about average for having really bad service. There was a range of responses available for the owner to use with me, and he picked one of the worst. With a patronizing voice, he told me that I should be using my ladle to serve myself, not my chopsticks, how I was using an aggressive attitude with him, and that I could leave if I wanted to. At this point, I raised my volume enough so that the people around me could hear me and told him that the problem wasn't that I didn't know how to use a ladle, but that we were never given one, and also that we got really shitty service all around. Then, and only then, did he take a more conciliatory tone and promised to make things better. Later, he stopped by and asked how things were going. I had forgiven everything at this point, so I pleasantly said "much better." He slapped me on the shoulder fairly hard and said, "good, why don't you calm down then?" He quickly added, "just kidding," but this was the moment where I realized that this guy was as false as a three-dollar bill. In the background was terrible, clichéd karaoke music, with the VJ imploring diners to get up there to sing for a 10% discount on their bill. The owner comped us part of the meal, I tipped generously for the amount charged. I told him I'd pay with cash because I knew that's better for businesses, and he told me that I was being a "good Asian." Great, on top of everything, he has applied some weird stereotype to the race that he and I belong to. We then engaged in small talk including what we should order when we come back. I endured this round of pleasantries because I figured that's what you need to do in order to leave a version of hell on earth. On the drive home, my wife mentioned that she got a bad impression of the owner right away. She reminded me that when we walked in ten minutes early, he used a patronizing tone about how we were early. And I remembered that I also thought this was odd since we were there for the last seating and the place was half-empty. But I hadn't quite registered this because I had been in such an affable mood when I walked in. read more

What can I say, five stars for the experience and exceptional service. The place only has about 4-5 tables which felt homey, personal and intimate. We made reservations for the Shabu Shabu Box, which was pretty much an AYCE hot pot, an Asian comfort food indeed. We were greeted by Gabe, who was very friendly, attentive and enthusiastic throughout our dinner. As first timers to the establishment, he gave us a rundown of how to order. We got to pick what we wanted in our hot pot along with AYCE appetizers. The Shabu was simple, yet very satisfying and filling. The aroma of the broth alone was so delicious! Even better with the udon and ramen, vegetables, seafood and beef in it. And the Enoki mushroom (which we've never had before) was an awesome addition to an already awesome broth.
