My normal spot for drunken noodles is typically closed on a specific day of the week and was craving those thick spicy noodles so hit up Rice to curb that urge! Went in there with great expectations and was completely disappointed. The food was so heavily condimented that it felt like they poured an entire 5 lb bag of salt. It was so bad that I had to literally drink glass after glass of water. It was very difficult to enjoy at all. The Tom Kah soup was bad, it was a combination of super salty and super sweet at the same time. Never tasted anything like this and I've had Thai from MANY restaurants through out LA. Just couldn't do it The drunken chow mein was so super heavily condimented that I just couldn't do it. I kept looking around thinking to myself how the heck can these people eat here? I was honestly even thinking of trying the other sister restaurants in the same vicinity (by mama), I think they are owned by the same owner?, but now I'm hesitant. I have long been a fan of rice by mamas, especially as a vegetarian with celiacs, they had always been excellent at substitutions and accommodating for about everyone, unfortunately this seems to no longer be the case, last night was the second time in a row I ordered a tofu dish and had chicken delivered to me. I called the restaurant to tell them what happened and received complete disinterest over the phone. This does not seem to be a restaurant I can continue to trust and recommend those with food allergies or vegetarian diets be careful when ordering from them as they appear to be in disinterested in whether they get these details right. This is my new favorite restaurant in Ventura. One Saturday lunch on their lovely outdoor patio and I now find myself craving the flavors of the many veggies in their dishes. Service was exceptional, too. My hubby and I ordered the Pad See Ew, Pad Thai, and Pineapple Fried Rice. Yeah, while I know that's a lot of food for two people, we just had to have it all! We requested steamed tofu in both noodles dishes and it was a nice compliment to the dish. The Pad See Ew was loaded with broccoli, carrots, tofu and cauliflower, making for a colorful presentation. The Pad Thai, also with steamed tofu came with crushed peanuts on the side and contained scallions, bean sprouts and steamed tofu as well. Was nice of our server to ask if we had any peanut allergies or other allergies prior to placing our order in the kitchen. The Pineapple Fried Rice was also a picture perfect dish. Imagine cucumbers, broccoli, red pepper, cauliflower, scallions and of course pineapple with a touch of curry all in one amazing dish. Yes, indeed we will return and I suggest you do to. My wife thinks I have attention deficit disorder. I can't think of a better time in my life than the early eighties. We had a great neighbor named Earl in the eighties when I was in high school. I really hated high school. Earl used to let my friends and me cut across his yard with our bikes when we'd head downtown to Carl's Jr. for lunch. I have one friend, Junior, who claims that the Earl of Sandwich invented the sandwich, but the Jewish, Middle-eastern and Chinese versions predate the English version of the sandwich by hundreds of years. Chinese and other Asian-inspired flavors always sound great to me, and one of my family's favorite Thai restaurants in Ventura is Rice by Mama 2. The interior of Rice by Mama 2 is casually elegant and the menu is excellent. It includes both standard Thai dishes and a few unique items. They also have a fantastic mural on their wall that I hadn't seen before. I wonder what the lady in the mural is cooking? Our favorite Rice by Mama 2 dishes are the pad Thai noodles and the pineapple fried rice. They also have great tofu options. Super, super delicious, man. I think if Superman fought Batman he would definitely lose. Batman possesses extraordinary ingenuity and street smarts, and Superman gets tired when exposed to Kryptonite. Earl and his wife moved to Nevada when he retired from the post office. My wife and I finished our Rice by Mama 2 take out meal and it really delivered. The food was pricey but delicious and the portions are huge. We ordered: - Rotti 10 w/ Yellow Curry (3/5): it was really tasty but we ordered it at a mild spice level and yet was pretty spicy and the rotti was oily - Drunken Noodles w/ Tofu (4/5): it was bomb, but would have preferred it to be a bit more saucier and have more veggies - Panang Curry w/ Tofu and Red Rice (4/5): not 5/5 because we didn't like the red rice paired with it, but the curry was really good! - 1 Thai Iced Tea with Coconut Milk; 1 Thai Iced Tea with Half and Half (4/5 for both): both of the teas were decent, but the cups were filled with a lot of ice After picking up the order and driving back home, we realized they had forgotten our 2 thai teas. Great vegan/vegetarian restaurant in Ventura. My bf and I visited this restaurant on a Saturday evening at around 6:15. Parking was easily available in the city parking lot structure and on the streets. When we arrived,there were only two other people in the restaurant. The interior of the restaurant was adorable with walls adorned with artificial plants and other greenery sprinkled about the restaurant. The exterior boasts a decent size patio that opens up to the sidewalk. The menu contained a good variety of vegan Thai food categorized into appetizers, salads, soups, curry, stir fry, sides, noodles, fried rice, nam-prik, tea pots, and drinks. Most of the dishes contained tofu but could be substituted for mock duck, mock chicken, and mock ground beef. We selected the fresh roll tofu, corn cakes, Larb with mock chicken, Drunken Noodle with mock chicken, the Signature Butterfly Pea Flower Tea, and an 805 Beer. The food was prepared and presented rather quickly manner and was plated well. The portion sizes were good. The food was delicious! My omnivore bf's favorite was the corn cakes. Since I'm not a big fan of fried food, The corn cakes was not my favorite dish. Although prepared very different from what I am used to, the Larb was my favorite. Instead of using several leaves of romaine lettuce, there used two leaves of green leaf lettuce. The tea was cold and sweet. Service was friendly, helpful, and patient. Prices were reasonable. The gender specific, multi-user restrooms were clean and spacious but a little outdated. Rounding off from a 4.4, this restaurant rates a 4. Being a vegetarian, I loved this restaurant. The chicken in our Thom Ka soup was super dry & the fried rice was meh- only onions in it/no other veggies/pretty boring tbh. $100 for 4 people for take out. Service is really hit or miss, and there's one particular waiter that always gets my order wrong, takes way too long to check on me, and then way too long to come give me my bill. Even when the restaurant isn't busy. Today I had to go up and ask for my bill-that's never a good thing. Meh. I've been here a number of times now and every time ranges from good to excellent. Service also ranges from okay to excellent. This used to be an all vegetarian and vegan location, but they changed it to include meat sometime this past summer. I was pretty bummed about that because I've had a few situations where my food came out wrong and with animal products in it, that never would've happened while they were still all vegan /vegetarian. But, when I pointed it out to them they always took it back and fixed it pretty quickly and were apologetic. Prices are pretty average, I would definitely check out the lunch special as that is the best deal. It's Monday through Friday of course. They have a small indoor seating area, and if the weather is nice it's fun to sit outside on Main street and people watch while you eat. For starters, we ordered the tofu satay. Mmmmmm the peanut sauce alone is reason to try the dish. The tofu came on skewers and was seasoned really nice. It's a great way to start your food journey. For dinner we ordered the dinner special, which was a triple curry combo. It came with rice, and three kinds of curry (red, yellow and green). We ordered it with a medium spice level, and for future we will go with mild. We discovered we are not as tough as we thought. Medium was spicy ... "Pow ... and Yow!!" We also ordered the drunken noodles and they were delicious. We added tofu to that dish. The plate was empty by the end of the meal. There were so many other items we'd like to try on our next visit, so we will be back for sure. All in all, it was great food, great service and reasonably priced. You should check it out. I don't mark many spots 5 stars and they deserve it! The tofu fresh roll was well wrapped, which can be hard and the peanut sauce was a good balance of salty, sweet and smooth. The cashew chicken was mounded with chicken and had great veggies in a thick flavorful sauce. I liked the fancy cut carrots and that they used no spice, as requested. For the pad see ew they met the medium spice and it was pleasantly hot (spicy). The "gravy" sweet bean sauce was spot on and a flavor I have been missing until today! The noodles should look almost burnt. The broccoli was fresh and not soggy or overcooked. I downed it and went back for seconds.
