This is my go to for Asian ingredients. Surprisingly, good selection for a small store. It's nice to be able to get the ingredients I need without having to drive to 99 Ranch or H Mart in Mira Mesa. That the owner is very nice is a plus. I avoid La Sorpresa because the workers are aggressively rude. read more

Nice little store that's local, so I don't have to drive to Mira Mesa. There's two asian markets in Escondido, if the other store doesn't have what I'm looking for, this store will have it. Knowledgeable and friendly employees that knew I was cambodian cuz I bought the mudfish to make prahok, lol. Sometimes they close early, as what stated on the sign, otherwise they'd woulda got 5 stars. I love this place and I disagree with Lisa, I like the vibe here better than Chai. Found the people at both markets to be very friendly, but I liked the size and selections of Oriental Market more. The majority of the products are Thai and Vietnamese, with just a little of Chinese and Fillipino products thrown in. Don't fear asking questions. Jackie was really helpful and is my new bestfriend. I will go back for the great conversation and cooking tips, but will stay for all the great food. So happy to have found this place. I have been looking for a great market in the San Marcos/Escondido area (to get ingridients for my Asian cooking class in San Marcos) and this place is perfect. I normally come here for a bag of Shrimp Chips for my niece or instant Vietnamese coffee or a sweet snack for myself while they're preparing my food order at Ali Baba's. I never knew this place was here but it has been open for 12 years. After reading good reviews I went to check it out and was pleasantly surprised. I have to say that this place is better than K&K orient and Chai Oriental market (both in Escondido). Not to say that those places aren't great, just that this place is is bigger with more to choose from. It had kind of a weird smell but it didn't matter once I saw the selection. I was so surprised to see that they had durian flavored chips. They had about every noodle imaginable too. The owner was so nice too and I overheard her sharing recipes with other customers. A quick 10-15 minute from San Marcos and I can get some grocery items that I would traditionally only find at one of the larger Asian supermarkets down in San Diego where I used to live. The prices are reasonable, being it's a smaller store and I don't have to drive 40 minutes South. The staff is always nice and courteous. I broke my wrist once and the owner was nice enough to carry a 25lb rice out to the car for me. I would definitely go back and recommend easy grocery pick-ups for Asian items at this place if you don't want to make drive. I only give it 4 stars because they don't have some of the more popular brands that I am used to. read more

I like Chai's vibe a little bit more, but Oriental Food Market has a similar product set and it's also worth checking out. Picked up those Thai rice-kripie looking treats (these were made in Van Nuys) and a variety of dried rice noodles. This place is authentic Thai. The workers are Thai, there's a TV playing Thai programs, and there's a portrait of a Thai king (Thais REALLY love their royal family). This little market has everything! My aunt and I stopped by here to pick up some ingredients to make tom kha gai, panang nua, and laap gai and we were in and out in less than 20 minutes! They had a ton of fresh herbs nicely packaged up in appropriate servings sizes, everything from kaffir lime leaves to fresh Thai basil. We were even able to pick up some homemade roasted rice powder and roasted chili powder, which the friendly storekeeper recommended to us after she found out what we were making. (The original powders we made were more commonly used for Vietnamese recipes, apparently!) I used to frequent Chai's since it was much closer to where my parents lived, but the quality and quantity of ingredients available there has since gone down in the last few years. After taking a Thai cooking class by Krong I wanted to check out the Oriental Food Market. She recommended it as a good option for Thai ingredients in North County. It is a pretty small market but seemed to have a good selection. It is much smaller than Seafood City or other options but in Escondido North County area this is a great option. If they don't have something out ask because they have a small freezer in the back where they found use some frozen galangal. I am not very familiar with all the ingredients and what a good price should be but they didn't seem crazy expensive. We will surely be back to get some of the ingredients for curry such as galangal, kaffir lime leaves and thai basil and the curry paste. They have a nice selection of curry pastes to choose from. Moved back to society from North CA, where they had a 1 huge oriental market. The environment of the market was expected as other oriental places I had seen before. The staff are friendly and courteous, which is always good to new comers. Quite small from the one that was up north, but this would do for certain ingredients I need. The place was organized and the only recommendation I would provide is to implement selling more of the Asian goodies (ex: Japanese corn chips, etc). I've been shopping at this market for many years. The family that runs it are great people from Laos and the market is predominately Thai, Lao and Cambodian ingredients with a little bit of Chinese and Japanese thrown in. There is no need to drive to Mira Mesa for ingredients since they have just about everything you need here. If there is something I need, they will order it for me. So there are few places where I am likened to go. This place was close by my aunts house who the night before we spent new year's eve. We made Lumpias who everyone loved so new year's day we went here only to be met with a small ethnic food shop that had expired food and false advertised prices . We purchased two packs of Lumpia wrappers which were advertised for $1.79 a pack. We went to the register and she rang us up for $3.19 per pack she insisted that the price was right but when I went. Back to the make shift freezer that housed them it said $1.79 . A worker who was sweeping came over and scratched off the price sticker and they continued to speak in another language it was clear they were talking about us. When I left I decided to take picture of the outside for this review only to be met with them nursling pictures of my car and me . This was unsettling to say the least .
