You choose your base - rice or noodles, your protein/main (beef chicken seafood or veg) then your sauce (teriyaki, curry, etc etc). I prefer the Veg Curry (includes tofu). I have given this spot at YVR airport multiple tries, and the concept of it has never lived up to the product. You're better off going with a burger from next door, or a sandwich from another shop. On a recent visit, I paid extra to get chicken breast in my stir fry. Not only did they not fulfill that request (which I of course didn't realize until I had left the terminal), but the protein was hacked to hell--with bits of tendon and even bone still a part of the equation. Not appetizing in the context of the stir fry. You are paying a premium for a very mediocre output, heavily dominated by cheap ingredients such as cabbage and carrots. I'm not used to healthy options in airports, but I'm certainly happy to have them around. Hanging out in the Vancouver airport for a couple of hours, it was a treat to have options beyond fast food joints and over priced pre-packaged sandwiches. Rice Tales was my pick this time around. The menu held options for rice (long grain or basmati) or noodle bowls, your choice of meat and a sauce. I went with pork in black bean sauce (to the dismay of my seatmates on the way back to Edmonton...just kidding!) and basmati rice. I also had my choice of chopsticks or a fork. I once went an entire week in university eating things only with chopsticks-KD and popcorn included-you can imagine which utensil I chose. With an open kitchen behind the counter, it was easy to see my food being prepared. The meat cooked up in front of my eyes, my meal was ready in a little under 5 minutes. Not as bad as I thought. Having looked at all the other options in this area (Vera's burgers- not at 8am thank you; BG Urban - some tasty-looking sandwiches and a few mains), I settled on this place. It's a mix-and-match choose-your-own-everything place, which can be a bit overwhelming when faced with 18 sauce choices (honey garlic, soy sauce, sweet and spicy, sweet and sour, black bean, hoisin, and more) on a small amount of sleep. Oh, and you can choose rice bowl, fried rice, or rice noodles (think pho-sized noodles) - the latter two are meatless and it's a few extra $ for meat. Oh and then add the meat itself - the standard meat is chicken (dark meat) which although is skinless (darn) may include some cartilage (yay!) so be prepared if you're not a fan of an occasional 'crunchy' bit. Other meats include white meat (extra $), and I think there is a seafood option. I chose the rice bowl, which comes with one sauce ($0.80 for one additional sauce; $1.35 for two). Pricey but I would say was satisfied with amount of food (half a box was perfect for my breakfast - or is it lunch? I'm a bit confused as to the time right now), and good chicken/veggie ratio to rice. The house sauce was a coconut curry, not spicy, and quite tasty though a bit on the salty side. The rice was good texture despite having been made in a giant rice cooker. I noticed afterwards that they offer brown rice and quinoa options too (for extra $ of course). The cashier was pleasant and the cook even said thank you to me after doling out the food. While I was waiting, two other airport employees came by to get 'the usual' - one was a honey garlic, one teriyaki. May consider those next time I'm passing through :) read more

It's not as bad as some are saying. I think it depends on what you order. I had a rice bowl with some veggies with the black peppercorn sauce. If people are expecting a gourmet meal at an airport in North America, then they will definitely be disappointed. What this place offers is semi-healthy food, a hearty portion of food for any flights between 3 to 6 hours (without getting you sick) for around $10. You could always go to the restaurant across the hall, but then you'll end up spending $25 to $30. Food was prepared within 5 minutes, service was friendly and reasonable price, so I think it's good for airport food. read more

For airport food, in Air Canada's domestic terminal, I think this is pretty good. If it were anywhere else, like an actual restaurant lets say, I wouldn't be so glowing. But in a barren wasteland of taste that i find myself in 2-3 times a month, at least, Rice Tales has been a saviour. It's fast, it's cost effective ($6.99), it's pretty healthy. If you want healthier chicken you can have all white meat for $2 extra. My pick? Chicken rice bowl with teriyaki + peanut sauce, to go. Made fresh, and heaped with a decent amount of veggies and some serious chicken pieces, the Chinese style take away container even stays magically warm for your flight. In an airport you have few choices, but at least with Rice Tales you're getting an actual meal for the same cost as a wrap at Bread Garden, or just a buck-fifty more than an Odwalla. The beef could have been less dry and more juicy...The beef that they use are thick pieces unlike some other food court style using very thin slices of beef. Some of the vege could have been fresher. On the plus side, portion of the plate is quite good, meat and vege balanced quite well. Overall, the food here are balanced with meat and vegetable portion and fill you up if you are hungry, but that's about it. There are only so many places for food in the YVR airport, and this is the place to go if you've got a hankering for Asian food with a hint of a Western twist! I was tired of burgers and sandwiches, so I decided to check this place out. Their service is ok - hit or miss, and it took a while for the person at the counter to notice that I wanted to order. But once I had their attention, they were very friendly and helpful in recommending. I got a rice bowl with chicken breast and black peppercorn sauce and it came in one of those classic Chinese takeout boxes that deceptively hold more food than it looks. The food was flavourful, had some fibre, and hit the spot! Long story short, if you come here expecting great service and amazing Chinese food, you'll likely be disappointed (what airport has this?? I just realized I do a lot more international than domestic travel when the new C-terminal food court was new to me this weekend! (This place opened in 2009). Rice Tales is the Asian option in C-terminal and is quite healthy - you choose how you want your rice and veggies/beef/chicken/seafood done and pick your sauce from a list of about 15 and off you go with your little Chinese takeout box. Or you can get some pre-made sushi. The food isn't mind-blowing, but it's a fast and healthy option in the area and all rice options are under $7 before taxes. My favorite part - TONS of plug-ins in the seating area so you can get a lot of work done (or surf the net) without worrying about draining your battery while you eat! read more

RICE TALE is way much better than our expectation of airport food. - it's not that expensive as airport food. i have a seafood chili rice for 7.25 with huge size. - the food is actually very good! a loooot of spawn and squid mixed with the rice in chili sauce (but not that hot, it's about 2 star out of 5 of hotness) To me, RICE TALE could be a really "fancy" "concept" restaurant in downtown of a modern city. 2013 and 2014 I took some 200+ flights and would walk by this place every Monday morning and Friday nights! The smells always made me wonder what it would be like! Well, to say the least, I was hugely let down! I order honey garlic and spicy sauce chicken on white rice (I wanted brown rice but they were all out!). Well, hoping for the best, I got the rice box and looked into it. To my disappoint, I found that there was barely any chicken. The box was stuffed mostly with rice and veggies. The chicken to rice ratio was very low and it didn't taste great at all! the food was okay for the price I paid for it. I was starving but did not want to have a burger that is sold next door, so I went for this option. I got the fried rice with pork and curry sauce which came out to be 9.00+3.29 plus tax. Maybe it was my mistake thinking that there would be some vegetables but all I got was very little green onions. Not much meat and it tasted bland. I wished for extra soy sauce or sriracha or even just small packets of salt just to make the taste more bearable but none of those were available. Though there aren't too many options in Gate C for food, I decided on rice plates because I love stir fry. The cashier taking my order is Chinese and that was quite promising for the upcoming meal. Perhaps I set my hopes too high because I've never had such terrible stir fry before. The price isn't particularly expensive -- about $10 per rice bowl -- I think that's fairly cheap for airport prices. However, not only was the taste of the food bad, but so was the quality of ingredients. My boyfriend ordered a ginger beef stir fry and the beef came out in blocks, literally several pieces of beef stuck together. I'm not sure how anyone can cook meat properly when it's still glued together. The cabbage in his dish included many of the end (root) pieces -- these are normally cut off and exposed of before cooking since they are really tough to bite through. My own dish (spicy pork tofu with rice) tasted like the pork was really old. Again, the meat was stuck together in chunks -- so I'm sure that didn't help the taste. Needless to say, both my boyfriend and I couldn't finish our meals and ended up buying burgers next door. We will NEVER eat at Rice Plates again. read more

I paid $13 for a small container of basically thin rice noodles drowning in watery sauce. There were only about three globs of chicken (why don't you cut these to an edible size) and the veggies present were only green peppers and bok choy stems. Unbelievably awful! Our orders for noodle bowl with pork in s&s sauce and vegetable bowl with S&S sauce were taken cheerfully and competently by a pleasant counter person. Those two items plus a bottle of water to share came to $20.30 -- not unexpected in airport food. We watched as the cook, who was obviously in the weeds, produced one of our orders, and then -- about 5 minutes later -- the other. On tasting, we looked at each other in disbelief. The sweet and sour sauce was a virulently red soupy substance, not reduced enough to cling to the rice or noodles. It tasted like a solution of two parts water to one part Chef Boyardee. The vegetables retained a limp semblance of their original shape and a pale semblance of their original colour -- this was good, because we could never have identified them by their taste. They tasted like wet cardboard. So did the rice, but we could tell it was rice because it was smaller and rice-shaped. This was easily the worst Asian meal I have ever eaten. It was astonishing to encounter this in Vancouver, where one can find good Asian food on almost every block. read more
