Friendly, efficient front desk staff. When I called about a macular degeneration issue on the phone, the receptionist quickly connected me to an optometrist who explained it to me in detail. Whenever my glasses go out of alignment or a part becomes loose, I can go there & the technicians will fix it on the spot if they are not too busy with customers. The various high tech machines for optical diagnosis are a great way to check up on eye health. There is a plethora of styles of eye glass frames that will fit every budget. And those wanting more upscale products can find Prada, Gucci, Bolle, etc. My doctor, R. Miyamoto, is a very hang loose, laid back type in his approach to patient to doctor interaction. He's very calm in his approach & reassuring. I've been coming his office for over 20 years & have had very happy, satisfying experiences. There are other great optometrists in the same office such as Drs. Nakamura, & Osako. The doctors are great and the front staff are great, always friendly and considerate. The equipment is state of the art-at least 3-5 different machines with pictures of your optic nerve and panorama picture of the back of your eye, glaucoma testing...all before you see the doctor so they can do a thorough work up! I had LASIK so I don't deal with the glasses staff, but I can hear their interactions and they always seem informative and helpful. I was very disappointed. I was supposed to be a new patient. They let me in, sat me down and for the next 40 minutes I sat there. Granted I was reading a book, but I was in front of them, they passed me many times, never gave me any forms. I suddenly noticed that several people who had come in before me were already being taken care of. Again, I was right in front of everyone, no one said hello or be with you in a moment. I was referred here by Nvison! I got my Lasik two years ago and have been going to Nvision for my one year check up. When my one year ended, Dr. Shin, recommended Dr. Miyamoto's office. With her recommendation and after reading all the positive reviews, I was sold and quickly made an appointment. From the start I was impressed. They have new, state of the art equipment for checking your vision. They have stations with different machines that check various things such as glaucoma testing and eye pressure. Once you're done with all the stations, it's time to see the doctor. I first saw Dr. Nakamura. She told me she also was a former Lasik patient. She did a check on my eyes and then told me Dr. Miyamoto would see me as well. She was friendly and did a great job explaining topics like dry eyes. Dr. Miyamoto came in to explain the different images that they took with the machines. I liked that he explained the images throughly. Similar to Dr. Miyamoto, he was friendly and nice. I also was touched that he gave me a little gift (colorful post its in a container) and thanked me for coming in. He didn't even know i was a new patient when he handed this. I can tell they really care about their patients here. From the state of the art equipment they use to the friendly staff to the caring and informative Dr. Miyamoto and Dr. Nakamura, it is not a surprise this place is highly recommended! After noticing my contact lens supply was running low, I asked a friend and she referred Dr. Miyamoto. Then I went to get my second opinion on Yelp...it's a good sign when there's over 20 reviews and mostly 5-star ones. Also fellow Yelper Toshi I. gave this place a 5-star review. That gives me lots of assurance. Another bonus was his office is just five minutes from where I live. Dr. Miyamoto and his staff is very personable and just top notch. Their equipment was more advanced than my last optometrist. The office also provides the Optomap retinal exam. They explained to me how my insurance benefits were for contacts and eyeglasses. I was given samples of two different contact solutions (Clear Care and BioTrue). I was also given two types of contact lens brands to try out. Henry David Thoreau once wrote, "The eye is the JEWEL of the body." O.O Thank goodness for Dr. Miyamoto + staff! Not only did they handle my PRECIOUS eyes with care, they TREASURE excellent patient services. I'm impressed with their technologically advanced equipment, specifically their Optos/Optomap Machine. With this baby, there's NO NEED for dilation drops! It's sophisticated enough to provide a full retina scan within seconds. It sure saved me from finding a DD. :) The image file is digitally saved in my file and allows the doctors to view the images each year to compare changes in my eye's health. There's also desktops in all office rooms for when the doctor pulls up patient's retina photo or other important information. Dr. Kawamoto performed my vision examination and was thorough to find my exact prescription. You know, the whole, "1 or 2... 2 or 3... what does this line say??" She was excellent--turns out my eyes actually improved, therefore she lowered my prescription. Dr. Richard Miyamoto gave me nearly 20-30 minutes of his time. (That is light years in the doctor world.) He answered my most random questions about common eye diseases with details and even pulled up photo examples on his desktop. He was thorough with his examination, checking over the prescription results Dr. Kawamoto tested me earlier. He also pulled up my retina image and discussed the health of my eyes. A wide selection of frames and brands from Giorgio Armani to Nicole Miller. I felt the frames were a tad expensive, but affordable if insurance covers a portion. I got glasses, but I did notice there were some rebates on selected contact brands. (Glasses were ready within a week and a half for pick up). Added Bonus: + Appointment - Making an appointment over the phone was a breeze. Staff scheduled me in the next morning and I didn't have a wait time! + Staff - Friendly, courteous, professional, smiley. Dr. Kawamoto was an angel with guiding me through all my examinations to test the health of my eyes. She was patient with my many questions regarding the appointment and what to expect. Tips: + For examinations, it's advisable to bring current glasses and/or contact lenses box. This helps staff with your examination. I turned to yelp to find a place to get new glasses, since mine broke. I haven't been to the eye doctor since 2006, so I was long over due. After seeing the reviews on Dr Miyamoto's office, I had high expectations. I called yesterday and got a morning appt for today. The staff was friendly and I had Dr Nakamura helping me. She was very sweet and gentle in her demeanor. I felt as relaxed as I could be at a Dr office. Everything went smoothly and she even showed me the pictures of my eye on the computer screen, explaining what she was looking at. I was happy that Dr Nakamura offered me a weaker prescription, as I didn't want to get too dependent on glasses all of the time. That showed that she was really looking out for my best interests. The lady who helped me choose my frames was also very helpful and professional. Since I don't have insurance, they gave me a discount on the exam and glasses. That really helps! read more

Short version: This place is the best! The workers here are nice, they actually start a digital archive of your eye scans to monitor changes over time. This place is the best place to get your eyes checked. When it comes to healthcare, I usually jump place to place since no place has impressed me to a point for me to come back. I can finally say that I have found my regular optometrist. Dr. Miyamoto is very thorough when it comes to examining your eyes. They take the normal tests (the blurry road, the puff of air in your eye, the bright light into your eyes, etc), but they go an extra step and take two digital scans of your eyes so they can track any type of changes when you come back the following year. No other place has done this. The helpers are also very helpful, explaining everything they are doing if you ask them and they don't treat you like you are being nosy if you ask too many questions. When you are done with your examination, they explain exactly what kind of benefits you receive from your HMO/PPO provider. The only thing that I found uncomfortable was the fact that after my exam, there is the "sales" lady that goes with you on choosing a frame for your face. She gave me so many different frames. I personally like to choose a frame on my own instead of having someone ransack me of different frames. I think frame choosing is a very personal choice and because of this, like to take my time and not have to be with any employee. Anyway, after a while, she left me alone and after the help of my girlfriend, found the frame for me. The process was friendly, and very smooth. I would definitely recommend this place! I had an issue with one of my eyes for a few days and my regular optometrist in Redondo Beach couldn't see me for 3 weeks. I told the office person at that office that I had an issue that I was very concerned about. But they said that was the best they could do. So I went on line and found Dr. Richard Miyamoto. I read the reviews and called the office yesterday afternoon and let them know what the problem was. They asked if I had time to come to the office that afternoon. I had gone to ER and my primary care with no resolve. I found this office on yelp, they told me to come in ASAP. I had originally wanted to find an optometrist near my home in Orange County, but nothing beats the convenience of going at lunch by the office. Convenience won out. I found the Dr. and his staff to be the nicest I've ever encountered in my life. And I mean geniuinely kind people, not the i'm-smiling-at-you-because-it's-part-o-my-job type of nice. And of course, niceties alone won't win me over when it comes to health. The doctor and staff are professional, highly knowledgable, thorough and technilogically advanced as well. I've never had any past optometrist take photographs of my inner eyeball before. Neat stuff! They even keep the digital files on hand to track any changes over the years. Anyways, we were chit chatting and the Dr. saw my ring and asked if I was getting married soon. We started talking about honeymoons and he mentioned giving me daily disposable contact samples for my trip so I wouldn't have to worry about bringing solution or cleaning my contacts. I hadn't thought of that but it was nice of him to offer. When I went to pick up my contacts, the front desk staff asked how long my honeymoon would be and then gave me 8 days worth of daily disposable contacts to last me through my entire trip! Sweeet! Pretty mad today! So I went in to get an eye check up, which basically cost me $10 co-pay, but as the examination continues, the optometrist simply asked if I need contacts and I said no, but she asked if I want to get checked anyway. So, since it only took like 5 minutes, sure why not? Guess what? They apparently charging twice what they charged for last year, without informing me before the exam, and I didn't even plan to get contacts, so instead of $20 of contact lens exam, I had to pay $38, and when I started questioning why I paid only $30 total last time, the assistant that helped me simply said, "Oh, we just started charging that amount recently." I'm like, "excuse me, I believe I deserve to be informed first before this sort of increases." Of course they ignored my disappointments and ranting, I had to pay that freakin' $38 bill. I like all the equipments and such, but never ever I come here for contact lens anymore, this is not right and I was going to buy the same frames with all the required lenses. I picked the same frame, since my prescription didn't go up at all (the aging years), I figured it would've cost the same, oh no, this time it went doubled as well, sheeze!!! Sorry Dr Miyamoto, pretty disappointed at your staff today, I'm not really sure if I want to come back again next year, I probably going to look around for better optometrist. read more

I have to give Dr. Miyamoto's office 5 stars for great customer service and great eye care. I was referred to his office after starting my new job and my old optometrist, Dr. Teagle in Glendale that I have been going to since I was 12, said that they couldn't accept my new eye insurance. I'm glad that I had to move because I realized how great the service Dr. Miyamoto's office provides vs. Teagle Optometry. The office is nestled in an unassuming Japanese complex in Torrance, right by Sushi Island, which I have also reviewed. The office is clean and simple, and all his employees wear white lab coats which adds to the professionalism. It reminded me of Honda factory workers who also wear white coats and pants on the assembly lines. Each appointment is preceded by a call by his staff to remind you of your appointment and if you need to reschedule. The typical appointment is usually handled by one of Dr. Miyamoto's optometrists. In my case, I've been consulted by Dr. Kristal Kawamoto and Dr. Eugene Osako. After the initial tests, Dr. Miyamoto comes in to check review what they found and discuss any issues you may have. I'm amazed at the friendliness of Dr. Miyamoto and his staff because they treat the patients, not as patients or customers they see a few times a year, but really like their friends. Dr. Miyamoto tells me about stories about his travels to Hawaii and his unusual experiences he's had in his life. Dr. Osako is a car guy and we've had some good conversations about new cars the Japanese manufacturers have released. The only potential "downside" I can say about the office is that he and a many of his staff graduated from UCLA. Blah! Oh BTW, Dr. Miyamoto has a lot of cuties on his staff! Hehe. I have been wearing glasses for well over 3 decades now, so you can say I've had my share of eye doctor visits. As other reviewers have mentioned, the doctors and staff are patient, friendly, and genuinely care about the customers. Then what gives with the 1 star rating??? Read on. After the initial office visit, I too thought I had found my eye doctor for life, but the experience of ordering my glasses was filled with frustration and disappointment. Not having heard back about my glasses, I had to repeatedly take the initiative to call periodically to check the status. Many calls and a month later, I decided to just cancel the order because my old optometrist in LA could have it ready in 2 days flat. Citing delays at the lab, they reassured me the glasses would REALLY be ready this time. When I brought my new glasses home and had a chance to examine it closely under bright light, I was shocked to find a lot of scratches on the new frame. There seemed to have been a massive struggle getting one of the lenses into the frame. Shockingly, ink from a ballpoint pen was used to cover up the scratches!!! To make matters worse, they lost the original screw and the replacement screw protruded out of the frame....grrrr!!! Instead of doing the right thing and starting with another frame, someone screwed up and tried to cover up their mistake with ink, hoping the customer wouldn't notice. This is simply unacceptable, not to mention unethical. No matter how awesome the initial office visit was, the lack of follow-up with the order, the eternal delay, and shoddy workmanship really turned me off. So my quest for a new eye doctor continues.... = = = = = = = UPDATE: So 2 frames, 6 lens pairs, and 2 months later, I finally did get glasses I could be happy with. The frame was perfect with no scratches, the lenses fit well, and I could see better than ever before. From beginning to the end, the staff was friendly and helpful.
