Okay, so the second part was more of a joke, but I was REALLY mad at my husband for leaving the sliding door open...only for all of our pets to wander off in different directions. One of our dogs chased our one-eyed runt of a black cat (who cannot see very well out of the one eye she has) up a tree at dusk. She made it about 60 feet up? There was no reaching her and she was stuck. No, she would not have been able to climb down on her own. We assessed the situation thoroughly. Do not judge or assume. Anyway, I digress. Our friend got in touch with this company and they were willing to come out with their climbing gear. That night, in a little under two hours, they scooped the little girl up in a pillow case and we got her safely inside. As soon as that happened, my anger dissipated, and I could think clearly again. These guys were down to earth, friendly, funny, and all around decent human beings. They actually cared. They didn't scoff on the phone like the others. No I will not name the others, because these guys are the only ones I want to give my energy and attention to. I will be calling them in the future to have a couple trees taken care of. I had some trees knocked over from a tropical storm and my insurance company selected Richard's Tree Service that morning. They arrived mid-afternoon that same day as soon as the storm was past. One large tree had knocked down two smaller ones, demolished part of a fence, and was resting against a house and on the roof. They brought a bucket truck to get at the roof, a crew of a dozen men, and after they had chopped up thousands of pounds of wood, they brought in a crane truck. They worked steady and hard removing everything. Only the stumps were left, and those they came back for in two weeks time with a grinder. This company can deploy some large machines and capability quickly to take care of any size and number of felled trees. Great company of hard working people. read more

The Richards Tree Service crew just left our home after having removed an old tree from our front yard and trimming up several trees in the backyard. Our backyard is on the GW Parkway in Alexandria so they couldn't take out the dead trees which are on Park Service property but trimmed up dead and live limbs that were growing over our fence and some over our house. They used both a bucket truck and a climber to reach the highest branches. They arrived on time, with plenty of crew members who really got to work quickly. Jacob, who had done our estimate, led the crew and asked me a few times if they were cutting away all that I wanted. They cleaned up everything thoroughly. I am glad I hired them for the work and will do it again if I need any additional tree work. Their office staff was very friendly and responsive too. read more

Enjoy this review! Jeez, where do I start? let's start out positive. The scheduler, I think her name was Mandy, was great. She went above and beyond on a holiday weekend. And also the gentleman who did the estimate was also a very nice guy. No complaints there...In hindsight, maybe it would have been better if scheduling wasn't so efficient because I could have gone elsewhere. Now on to the job...WOW! I had one request. I have a Koi pond and I said "Please, please make sure you cover the pond and stream area". They started out fine but then ignored it. So I asked them to fix it. They still didn't fix it. So I then INSTRUCTED them on what to do. They started making it worse, so I stepped in. This is when it got interesting. Angry chainsaw guy in the tree starts screaming at me about everything. "THEY ARE DOING THE BEST THEY CAN! THIS IS NOT AN EASY JOB! " and on and on. I said "sir, stay out of this. Let me handle this or you can just leave". BOOM! ...."FINE..YOU CAN HAVE THIS JOB, ITS ALL YOURS , WE'RE DONE!" ( I think he missed "customer service" training at chainsaw school) So I told them to pack it up and leave. He whined and complained the whole way down. The one lead guy on the ground was understanding as he had a much better temperament. The icing on the cake? Angry guy is in my driveway and decides to THROW his chainsaw TEN FEET onto my driveway and bounce it off my fence! Are you kidding me?!?!? I ran out there and said "Don't you ever do that again and get your gear off my property". He then charged at me with such a violent aggressive look on his face that I actually stepped back a bit. I think he wanted to fight, but it was hard to tell. I considered not even doing a review due to him being so violent and angry, but people need to be aware of this guy. If you need a small tree cut down in the middle of nowhere with nothing of value around it, then they are your guys. Anything else, why risk your property and your safety? There are plenty of other services. p.s. my neighbor even watched them drop unsecured branches around power lines. Maybe it was their first day. read more

On Nov 28th. 2020 "Richard Tree Service" came to my house to trim a tree in the backyard. They trimmed the tree with a fence and raised bed directly under the tree branches. Large branches were not cut in small chunks, but large heavy branches were cut and fell 20+ feet. While the branches were falling on the fence, a post in the center of the fence broke as well as the raised bed. The fence is now leaning because of the broken post. I reached out to Richards Tree Service many times from Nov 29th, through Dec 9th and they mostly avoided my calls at that time. After Dec 9th they reached out and said they will not do anything to mitigate this issue. The fence needs to be repaired. They say they will not repair anything. I got a quote for the repair and its over $1200 because there is a nice raise bed also attached to the post. They have since said that the post has mold and was compromised before they trimmed. All the other posts are not compromised and have no mold, and it is not easy to see the raised bed wood. I also don't agree that the broken post is moldy, its broken. They want me to pay the $1200 to have someone repair the fence and bed. They also stated they wanted to be there when I have MY fence repair person come pay... I don't have $1200 to dish out just for them to later say "still not paying". They have insurance but refuse to use it. I have tried contacting the insurance information but their provider never responds. Also, even with all of this happening I tried to pay my bill. Apparently to pay they wanted me to take down someone's wife's phone number to give her my credit card. I get it that this is a small business person who may be just contracted through Richards tree service, but its still unprofessional. I do not feel comfortable giving someone's wife my credit card and will be trying to pay a different way. I also had someone else come out to look at their job. They left cut branches just sticking out. I am not sure why they didn't cut from the base of other branches or the trunk. I am pretty sure those random branches will just get decay and potentially hurt the tree. The job does not look good, but hey the leaves are gone I guess? I have limited options to proceed, I cannot pay the $1200 for the repairs and Richards Tree Service says they won't do anything on their side. 1. They should have trimmed the branches in smaller chunks. Not large ones that would drop on the fence. Make sure you have a video of their job if you go with them, and tell them to make smaller cuts. 2. They should use their insurance, if the insurance finds that my backyard is all moldy (which I do not see) then they won't have to pay for it, this is why you have insurance. 3. They should improve their billing solution. Its 2020 and there are safer ways to pay online with proof of receipts. read more

Great service, and we are very happy with the results. We got 5 quotes for trimming a tall maple tree including haul away of branches. Richard's Tree Service was the second lowest and very communicative. The process was painless from scheduling the estimate to the work. Some companies seemed totally uninterested in a job as small as ours while others were wanting twice was Richard's Tree Service quoted. Disclaimer: I have never before gotten any tree service done so relaying anything I felt was out of the norm so that others might know, even if it was small deal to me or big deal to me. I contacted Richard's Tree Service to have big trees in my front and back yard inspected to be "winterized"/"stormproofed" as well as a tree dignosed with termites to be evaluated for removal. They said they'd send someone out and asked if I wanted to be there. I told them it didn't matter so they took my contacts. I found it a bit weird they didn't give me an estimated date/time but figured it was because I didn't say I wanted to be there. The next day someone called me but I didn't get to answer in time and they didn't leave a message (which surprised me). Just before noon that day, Mark showed up at my door. He said he attempted to call but no-one answered. I started walking Mark around but had an appointment I needed to attend, so he said he would finish and leave the suggestions at my door. What conversation I had with him was informative and professional. Mark specifically said about the termite tree that it could be left but later would be more expensive to remove so he suggested I do it now. The information they left was to do a class 2 trimming of one of the big back trees and to remove the termite tree. None of that was a surprise, though I was a bit surprised that the tree that I had guessed would need trimmed back more wasn't a concern in their opinion. The next day I contacted Richard's Tree Service again. After being disconnected twice by Zach (felt like I was in a movie where they didn't know how to transfer someone;D), they asked if it was ok if they contacted me that Friday to schedule something for the following week. I said that was fine. Friday came and went and I decided to call that weekend and leave a message. To my surprise, they had a weekend staffer just for taking messages. I told them someone had told me they'd contact me but didn't so they said they'd relay the message. The next week, early, they did get back to me and we scheduled something to be done that Friday. They asked again if I wanted to be there and I told them it didn't matter, but did ask how early it'd be (I didn't really want to be woken by tree cutting) and they said they were unsure. I relayed I had times I didn't want it to happen so we worked out they'd come "first thing" which would be between 8-9. That was fine with me so I agreed. That Friday, I heard someone at my door at around 7:55 but I was not decent yet so could not answer the door. It was indeed Richard's Tree Service and the service was rendered as agreed upon as they suggested. There were a BUNCH of guys there, I was actually surprised by the number. Occasionally, one or another guy would be standing around but never the same guy all the time. I felt like everyone had a job to do and was doing it when it was their "turn". Near the end, I did hear a couple guys just chatting about social things through a closed window but I got the feeling they were supervisors and could chat while the others did the work:P I know how that is;p So the work was done I thought pretty quickly (before the time I didn't want them doing the work) and well. They left the bill at my door and were surprised that I was home when I opened the door to receive it. Two minor annoyances (again to a tree service newbie) besides what's covered above. First, it was trash day in my neighborhood and to fit their truck they moved my trash can WAY down by my neighbors driveway. Which was understandable but when they left, they didn't move it back. Luckily I was there when they left and did so, otherwise I doubt my trash would have been taken. Secondly, there was a note on the tree removal to "leave mulch" which I thought was cool (free mulch!) however they left it in a big pile where the tree was. Which in itself wasn't bad but I actually have another tree I wanted to plant so was really hoping for a hole. I probably could have worked that out with them (if I had been there for the inspection OR if I had known that was going to happen - but since neither of those were the case, minor annoyance). Ultimately, I think they did a great job and I would have them again for minor or major services. Mostly 4/5 due to communication issues in the middle. read more

Recently moved to the area and one of the first things we needed to get done around our home was having the tree branches trimmed. I found Richards Tree Service in the Valpak coupon booklet and added them into the list of places I would call for quotes. I ended up getting a quote from Jacob Ellis and he was vary fast in getting me a quote and eager to secure my business. We did some shopping around and about 1 week later decided to use Richards. We initially scheduled to have work performed but had to wait 2 weeks prior to them being able to get it done. Well, the day before I received a call saying that they would like to reschedule to the following Saturday (work was to be performed on a Friday) because a job that they had earlier than ours took longer than expected. I understood and then agreed to reschedule to Saturday. Well, Saturday arrives and I get another call stating they needed to push to the following Friday because they had unexpected work that needed to be done due to the recent storms. I was highly annoyed and asked them if this was common for them to reschedule, and while I am not heartless and understand a tree falling through someone's home is critical - I felt that as professionals in the business for said years, that experience gained should allow you to accurately estimate time it would take to perform existing work AND/OR build in time for unexpected delays. Well, the following week the service was supposed to be on a Friday and I was supposed to get a call an hour before their arrival. I was unable to be at home that day but my husband (bless his heart) decided to take off work early to ensure we were home. Well, it was 15 minutes prior to expected start time and I noticed I hadn't received a call. Um, WHY am I the one following up? Anything tree related isn't cheap and for me to follow up with them on their schedule after they had mentioned they would provide us with a heads up is (to put it lightly) unacceptable. Called the business. Well, the operator had to contact Jacob and mentioned he could call us to give us an expected arrival time. Well, I got a phone call from Jacob asking to reschedule for that Saturday all right when my husband JUST got home. Same explanation - existing work took longer than expected. Well, that doesn't fly with me ESPECIALLY if I'm paying a business for their service and I have to be the one following up with you and then you tell me you need to cancel. In short, I declined all future service stating that these delays had already cost us time and money and although their costs for services rendered was cheaper, we were paying for it by consistently juggling our schedules and taking off work when they couldn't stick to their schedules without even a phone call to say "Hey, don't leave work - we're running behind". Needless to say I found another company who was shocked by our story and realized how small of a job it was. Now, I thought it was a big job to me but hey I'm not in the tree business - and they were out there 5 days later, at my home on time, ready to work, and had our patio and surrounding area done in less than 1.5 hours. I have seen better service and received better tree service and I will not recommend a business that doesn't show the value of customers time. I made them aware of how this impacted me and will impact future business for them because based upon my experience - I will not recommend them. read more

We were pleased the arborist gave us several recommendations of treating an infestation of borers. We elected to have the tree sprayed, then pruned, and scheduled a second spraying next May. The crew did an excellent clean-up following the pruning and consulted with me several times during the pruning on what could be cut or remain. Boom, net day I had an estimate - I got 3 quotes and Richard's was the most reasonable by far. Initially we had a scheduling hiccup that they resolved by immediately putting us on their schedule for 1030am last Saturday - very convenient for me! They arrived on time with plenty of team members, all the right equipment and with very good attitudes! What more can you ask for?...well they did that too - they were fast and cleaned-up the area prior to departure. The Richard's Tree Service crew just left my house. I use Yelp often for reviews but have never posted myself but I feel so compelled to share what a superb job these folks did. I sadly had to remove a large maple tree from my front yard because it damaged my sewer line (which am replacing later this week).The poor tree was an unfortunate casualty of the sewer mess. The tree is huge - 50 years old - close to wires and neighbors driveways. Richard actually was the one who did the cutting. I've never seen anything like this before. He literally climbed the tree and cut it down piece by piece. The skill and engineering he used to cut the entire 40 foot tree down was amazing and fascinating to watch. And his crew is awesome too. They operate like a well-oiled machine - totally efficient. Everyone clearly knows their job in this process. They cleaned up all the leaves, saw dust, etc from my yard, driveway, both my adjacent neighbors driveways and even the street. The price was the good too. I found Richards Tree service in the monthly coupon booklet and decided to request an estimate on 4/17/17 (via online form) to 'prune back' & crown my 8 ft Japanese Maple in my backyard. They came the next day (4/18/17) and left what I felt was a fair & reasonable estimate. Tremendous service from start to finish. A crew was at my house today to work on 3 trees and did a fantastic job - they did exactly what I wanted, they worked quickly but did a very good job and the site was cleaned up well. Josh, who did the estimate, was terrific. He came back out after my initial estimate to price removing another branch when my neighbors expressed interest. I really appreciate the extra trip. I hope they will use Richard's when their entire tree which is dying needs to be removed. Finally, the office staff has been incredible. Very responsive and managed to squeeze me into a tight schedule in order to accommodate my need to get new sod installed next week. I had worked with the same service for 6 years, but they've suddenly become unresponsive and difficult to schedule for anything. These guys are terrific. They are professional, honest, and extremely careful. They removed a very large tree from our front yard that was quite diseased. They provided fantastic service. I would highly recommend them. We declined to use one of the many itinerant services that roam our neighborhood that basically seem to be one guy, his truck and a chain saw. I did get estimates from several of these services. At the end of the day, their price was no different from what Richard's charged us, and Richard's is fully licensed, insured and retains a professional staff who really know what they are doing. read more
