Had a pleasant experience today when picking up some salt pellets during lunch time. In and out within 15 minutes. Service was quick and thank you to the staff who helped me load six 40lbs salt pellets Diamond Crystal bright & soft($8.99) to my car. Also I have their rewards app so I was able to use a $10 coupon off over $50 spending. Without the coupon, their regular retail price $8.99 is a bit more costly than Home Depot $6.73 per pack (bulk price -6packs or more or $7.48 regular price) but with the coupon it offsets the large price gap. I am paying about $4 more than Home Depot but I think about the time I save for check out and I won't need to do the heavy lifting all by myself. Their service speed really helps when you know you can make a quick stop to get things done in a short amount of time. I hope ACE can think about offering bulk pricing on sale pellets in the future so their price is more comparable to Home Depot. I also noticed that they now got pies by the entrance! I know where to get some pies the next time I crave for it. read more

12/26/24 Service was not good at all today. Older women cashiering with a about 6 people in line waiting to check out. She was attending to a client that was trying to get the price down on some sale lighting. Cashier seemed to be having a difficult time with her customer and never acknowledged those of us in line that had been waiting for some time. I asked is there was someone else to assist her and open up another register and she responded "they're all on vacation". She also told me specifically "I don't want to hear that". The 2 people behind me could not believe how she spoke to me. There was also chit chat amongst the others associates with her about how they spent their Christmas dinner. Even after our exchange, she still asked her customer about signing up for an ACE credit card. There was no urgency with her. read more

Whether you go for a $1 plumbing connector or large contractor order you always get the same friendly, enthusiastic service. Their staff walk from one end of the store to the other to show the part I am looking for and also provide candid feedback if something shouldn't be changed because it can cause further expensive repairs. I have been shopping for 10+ years and they consistently maintained the same courtesy. 2 days back I shopped there and might have dropped my wallet and realized that I didn't have my wallet only in the afternoon and called the store and they saved my wallet. I purchased some stone at Richert for a couple retaining walls in our backyard. There were a lot of options and styles to choose from and the sales people were wonderful and a great help. The stone was delivered as promised and we had zero problems. We also went inside the hardware store to pick up a few things. I must say, this store is so clean and once again the sales people were great. Richert Lumber made this process a lot easier than I thought it would be. So I'm conflicted. I would give the store a five. They have everything you could possibly want, it's all very neatly organized, the staff inside are always offering to help and today the woman at the checkout counter was very friendly and hilarious. However, if I were rating the employees in the lumber department alone, the store would get a solid... One. I have a 65' dogear wood fence that needs to be replaced and I went to this store to price 6' Redwood pickets. I walked around to the lumberyard in back and didn't see anyone to ask. Eventually, a younger employee walked by and I asked him if they had the pickets I was looking for. He responded by saying his coworker would know. I saw no one else in the lumber area and after a few uncomfortable seconds of standing there silently looking at each other, he walked past me and in through a rollup door in the back of the store. There was an older employee in there, who was just finishing with another customer. He told me he would be right with me. When the customer left, instead of helping me, he turned around and started stacking very long pieces of thin trim so he could bundle them together. As I watched, he's stacked all the pieces on top of each other and started to wrap one end, but the pieces were sliding sideways and off the pile at the opposite end. So, he went around to the other end and organized them again, one on top of the other, went back to the original side, and again, as he grabbed everything, the trim at the far end slid off the pile. He did this over and over and over to the point where I was ready to leave. His young coworker walked away. Eventually he got tired of doing this, put the trim down and asked me what I needed. I told him I had a 65' fence and I was looking for dog ear redwood pickets. He told me he knew exactly what I was talking about, but they didn't have any. They only had straight cut pickets and he pointed out into the yard. So, I asked how much they were and I was told $15! Not that I'm gonna spend $15 a panel, but I asked him how many I would need. He told me he had no idea the length of my fence. I reminded him it was 65'. His response floored me. He said, "I THINK they are 7 inches "and something" wide. He told me I could figure it out. It was very hot out and this employee never left the comfort of his shaded garage to show me what they had or to actually measure the width of the wood so I could figure it out myself, as he instructed me to do. He never got out a calculator like they would do at any other lumberyard to give me a rough estimate on how many pieces I would need. He had absolutely no interest in helping, so I left. I went into the store, where I was asked several times by employees if they could help me. When I did go to the register to buy something, the woman was great. Between the lumberyard and inside the actual store, it was night and day. The customer service couldn't be any farther apart. Needless to say, I wouldn't go to their lumber department again. read more

We ordered and had lots of large stones delivered by them a few years ago. Polite, professional, and on time. Today we called because everyone is out of Christmas lights and our 15 foot tree is looking very sad. Yippeee they had lights! This beautiful, spacious, well maintained store has everything you need, and they also have everything you don't need. I expected lights, hardware, and general supplies. I left with lights, Christmas gifts, and a free coffee. They're also very well staffed, which is refreshingly helpful. Bottom line: I adore this store! read more

As much as I hate to leave a bad review, I have to give you a warning about their mini bark. Do not buy this bark. It's mostly dirt. We love to use our yard in the summer and this has made it miserable. I spend more time cleaning than enjoying it. I purchased $1,000 of mini bark on 4/11. I have put bark in my yard numerous times over the years without any issues. But this was the first time I used Richert. I had a good experience with them a couple of years ago with a Trex purchase and wanted to support them as a local business. I sent them a picture of the walk-on-bark I purchased in the past and they agreed their mini bark was closest to what I wanted. Unfortunately, this bark is 90% dirt. When you walk on it, work in the gardens, play near it, the wind blows, anything...it sends up clouds of dust. It gets in your sinuses, on your skin and clothes, and in the house if the windows are open. It's miserable. I have to blow it off of my patio daily, can't sit on our patio furniture without wiping it down. I have cleaned my windows three times since I had it put in on 4/11. When it is wet, it's just mud. I have to clean my dogs paws constantly before he comes in. I tried watering it in, terrible use of water, but out of desperation I watered it extensively. I am so disappointed. I reached out to them immediately after having it put down (which cost me another $1,000). I sent pictures and asked for help or suggestions, but never heard back. I did not expect them to help me for free. I suggested putting some heavier bark on top of it, which I gladly would have paid for. I waited years to replace the bark due to the cost. Using a new company was an expensive mistake. 6/21 UPDATE Got a great response from Matt at Richert. He called first thing this morning and sent Jack out to look at it at it the same day. My email got stuck in their system and they never saw it. He agreed it should not be like this. They are coming up with a plan to fix the problem. Most likely I will have some of this taken out and we will replace the top with better product. But whatever they do, I appreciate the response and that they did not try to act like it was normal for bark to do this. They immediately took responsibility for the product. My visit started off well with good customer service and help looking for what I came in for, but once I came to the register to pay and use my coupon they wouldn't accept it because their system was claimed to be down and my rewards number was not preprinted on the coupon. Which is really not my problem that's their corporate problem. But what irked me was they said I couldn't even come back to get an adjustment later. Is this bait and switch ? You should honor your coupons This is an update to my review , got a call from the owner about my issues with using my coupon. He agreed with me that this shouldn't happen just because their system is down. He says he talked to his corporate office and has a way now to fix this issue in the future. Even though I very recently wrote a favorable review on this super Hardware, Lumber, Paint stores and Rock Yard, I feel compelled to write an update because I just discovered today that there is a second floor with a very complete lighting/kitchen and bathroom fixtures and nicely set up for easy display with plenty of inventory to choose from. And I also discovered a very complete paint store on the ground floor! The upstairs is most unique. It's kinda hidden. you can see a balcony overlooking the main floor on the right hand side of the store upon entry but there is no obvious staircase or elevator to get to it. You should find the entry to it almost directly across from the checkout counter. Here's what you will find - lighting fixtures and accessories that go along with that line of goods. There's also a complete line of kitchen and bathroom fixtures including faucets, shower fixtures, sinks, cabinets/vanities and a lot accessories. Best of all, the floor displays are brightly lit and uncrowded so it so easy to browse leisurely and comfortably. Again, the amount of inventory on display is bigger and more nicely displayed than any other retailer selling those lines of merchandise. Another pleasant surprise is you can meet the Company Cat, Ace! He's very vocal and has a very distinctive personality. He resides in his own cat-house in the small office at the top of the stairs. Go upstairs and say hello to Ace! Along the way up the stairs, take a look at their plaques and certificates on the wall. At the first landing where the stair case takes a 90° turn, check out the man-sized, bear statue - it's a bit of fun and I will have to ask about its significance. Downstairs in the front of the building is a complete paint store as well stocked as any paint specialty store and well beyond any hardware store including Home Depot or Lowes that I've been in. And in the corner of the Paint Dept. is a restroom. It's clean and they have a sink outfitted with real hot/cold water. That's a real luxury in public bathrooms. It's a fancy place but its comfy and is handicap qualified. Additionally, there are some things I left out of the previous review: = There's free, self-serve coffee for customers near the check out counter. = I find their prices to be fair/reasonable, sometimes equal to the 'big-box stores.' = The shelves all have price information displayed and for departments with lots of small items/parts, the bins have pictorial displays that helps you find what you're looking for. And the merchandise is in easy reach even for a short guy like me! = They have Rewards Program with bonus points and coupons for purchases and discounts on your birthday. = They have really neat things sprinkled around the store and especially near the check out counter. Today I found some glass files that are perfect for shaping your nails after clipping. There are lots of impulse items suitable for small gifts. They have extra long charging cords for your portable digital devices. = No matter what department you are, staff help is plentiful in both finding whatever you're looking for and also as someone you can ask for assistance in solving your particular problem. = The Customer Service Desk is on the main floor near the center of the store that can take care of special order, assist customers and it's all done quickly, expertly and cheerfully! = They have a Propane Tank Exchange program but you get a lot more for your money. The cost of a 20 lb. exchange tank is $18.87. Most other retailers charge $19.99 - $24.99. But, those are not really a full tank. Check the small print on those signs - they're only 3/4 full. But here at Ace, you get a full tank for less money! = The store is nicely organized, well lit, clean and the staff is super helpful and friendly! No, I'm not employed or affiliated with the store. I just think they are the best 'hardware store' in the Bay Area. I just wish they were closer to home. Third they have everything I've needed at a good price. I can park near the front door and it's never crowded. I needed a 144 inch long wood counter. I contacted over a dozen places and only two got back to me. David from Richert lumber gave me a quote and a time frame (under a week) and delivery of only $75 (the other company wanted to ship for over $500). Richert's customer service was excellent, even the people who made the delivery were nice. I had a lot of questions, David answered all of them, gave me a written quote so I could do a purchase order and the order was in- delivery was less than a week. I made a special trip on Sunday afternoon an hour out of my way, to drop 1k on a power tool. It's hard to find, so I called to confirm they had it. I show up just before closing as I'd said I would on the phone. Without having mentioned anything to me, turns out they plan to sell me the display unit. Problem (besides my not wanting a display unit) is they can't find the casing, and accessories that come with it, required to use it. I wait while they search for the kit. Now I'm getting attitude because I'm holding them up from closing! I haven't said a word, I've just been waiting as they asked. The manager then has an epiphany, if I could come back tomorrow that would be great! Are you kidding me????? That's the best customer service you can offer now that I've wasted my time? I could have had this product in hand, had I gone elsewhere, but I should be loyal to you and make the drive again tomorrow? What horrible customer service! How about, you bring me the tool tomorrow when you have it together? How about a discount for my trouble? How about at least introducing yourself, and making it more personal? I'm dealing with the general manager and I'm getting this attitude? WOW! I buy a lot of materials like lumber, and I was excited to start using a local company to the tri valley area. Not now! If that's the attitude from the leadership, then it will only be worse lower down. Oh the sales clerk who helped me? Never saw him since he went looking for the kit. But he did just walk past me in the parking lot, and had nothing to say. What a total disappointment and let down. Arrogance and a lack of understand of who their customers are. read more

I impressed that I can find what I need each time I go there. I didn't think I would find outdoor porch stair lights at Richert. The service desk is always available with knowledgeable staff. This last visit Kat helped us with a special order for yard tools. Ordered on a Saturday and they had for me to pick up on Monday. I brought in a sample, house siding piece with me, and the younger of the two women at the materials counter was very rude, but in an ugly way. I don't know if she was having a bad day or if she didn't like how I looked. I asked her if I purchase a large panel, would the person in the lumber yard have string to help tie it to the top of my car. She flat-out said no! Then another employee, who saw how rudely I was treated, stepped in and said they might have string. So, I went outside to talk to the lumber yard employee to find out if they have string to tie a wood panel to the top of a car. I stood there a long time. The employee eventually passed me driving a forklift. I said excuse me, and he told me to wait. I waited and waited. He attended to another customer that came after me. I had enough. read more

The five stars are for the lumber team at Richert Lumber (but all the guys and ladies there seemed super nice). Bought our siding, doors, and trim here over the course of the past week. Everyone is super patient, smart, nice, and honest. They took the time to help with cuts and trim which worked out perfectly, even late on Friday the lumber crew helped with detailed cuts which made my life much easier with the large lumber. As for pricing; the best around, don't fool yourself into thinking that HomeDepot is more cost effective, I have taken the time to compare over 25 items, 21 of the matching products were priced lower at Richert, the other four were equal. Sent multiple material lists for quotes and to have materials delivered with NO response multiple times. Sent same lists to more responsible lumber yards Ashby and Dolan which gave me quotes within 48 hours and kept communicating with us throughout. Decided to contact Richert again this month through their sales email since they are the closest local lumber yard and unfortunately the same thing happened , no response, nothing. I called after a few days and talked with someone who said they would look into and then found the material list in their junk mail . Waited for quote and 7 days later Richert sales emailed that we would receive quote this day. Nothing again. So we after a week we again emailed them about the status of quote. (Wanted materials before Christmas weekend) Richert sales responded the next day claiming they needed more info on one of the pieces before giving quote. We Sent response ti their question right away and again nothing, No response by Richert. )This last email was December 21). Called after Christmas weekend to ask about status of quote and again was told they would look into. Now its December 30. Still NO quote no response by Richert on status or anything. 2.5 weeks have passed since contacting them via their sales emails, nothing. In comparison both Ashby in Berkeley and Dolans in Concord responded within 48 hours. So my suggestion is that just because a business might be close by your residence doesn't mean that they would provide better services or care more than one that is farther away and/or in another city. I tried to make it work with this local business multiple times and on many different years but they just don't seem to care. Try other lumber yards that may be farther away and you will notice the differences, it will be clear which want and appreciate your business. read more

I'm dumbfounded by the amazing customer service of this place. Really awe inspiring and a great reason to patronize a family owned business such as this. Ok, here's my story: I purchased a Traeger Wood Pellet smoker/grill at the Alameda County Fair (a couple of cold ones and corn dogs will make you do crazy things.) I've wanted one for quite some time and I was ready to take the plunge (see previous corn dog statement). Unfortunately, the model I purchased at the show was not in stock at the fair grounds. I was told I had to go to Pleasanton to pick up here at their store as Richert Lumbar and hardware teamed up with Traeger to give me a smoking deal. See what I did there? First off, I spoke to Matt to see if the grill could be sent to my local ACE Hardware as I wanted to avoid a 70 Mile round trip to get the smoker. Unfortunately, this was not possible as this was a special County Fair deal. All good, he was really kind and offered to give me a bag of pellets for my trouble. So, I headed down to pick up my grill and various accessories. Sadly, when I pulled into their loading area my grill was nowhere to be found. Apparently, the day before some degenerate scaled their fence and stole several Traeger grills! To top it off, the remaining model they had in stock was taken to the Fair to be sold. This situation is completely NOT their fault and most places would simply shrug, say "sorry" and send you packing with a refund or a promise to order you one. Matt would not allow this to happen. Did I mention his name is Matt Richert and the company was started by his father and has his family name? Matt radioed to the fellas in the loading dock and told them to give me the next closest model which was substantially more expensive with his apologies for what occurred! Umm excuse me? You're apologizing for someone taking your stuff and you're concerned about me as a customer so much you're willing to eat a couple hundred bucks to make me happy!!?!?!? I do not accept your apology sir, because you are a unicorn in the business industry these days. A person so concerned about their business, customer, and their family name, they'd be damned to let some hoodlum ruin my July 4th bbq! So there you have it. Matt did way more than right by me. He went above and beyond because he did not want to inconvenience me. Try getting service like this at a "big box" store. It would never happen. You'd wait an hour for a faceless corporate manager who wouldn't do half of what this place has done. Richert Lumber and hardware is an "old school" type place where honoring the customer and integrity matter most. So, next time you're looking to save a couple bucks at a "big box" store instead, go to a place like this, where the customer is so important they won't put their name behind a bad experience. The cashiers are always friendly and I usually look for Clint who is the best! He has answers most of the time and asks someone else when he doesn't. He knows the store inside and out and give great advice/options on almost any topic. I have also dealt with others on staff and been very happy with the customer service. I went here for some redwood for my deck but did not bought from here. But I should I got a quote from Richert Lumber and then went to the yellow orange big box store and found it was cheaper there. So On Tuesday earlier morning, I went that big box store, there were about 15 pieces left but I need more than 30, So I had to ask the worker there to get some more from overhead. I tried my best to pick the best 30 of all those 15 + 50 woods. But later I found the carefully picked redwood from the big box store were worse than the wood scattered in the Richert Lumber. So it's little more expensive, but the quality is MUCH better than those big box stores. People over there help me with screws, joist tape and woodcare. This is some place you find good quality product and helpful people! read more
