Ok finally had some empanadas from this place. Been living in the area for 5 years and I finally made it over there. I must say I really enjoyed their food. I too like other yelpers have had Tito's empanadas and I will say they are just as good. I like the fact that "Rika's" bakes their empanadas they are not greasy like Tito's(they fry there's ). I really liked the chicken and mushroom, the blue cheese, and fatay the best. My husband had their milanesa sandwich and that was very good too and the portion is a large sandwich with plenty of meat and fresh bread. We will definitely be going back. Glad we found another great place to eat. Can't wait to try their pizza . Oh and I have a slice of carrot cake waiting for me for dessert. read more

Really tasty. I don't have extensive experience eating empanadas but I have tried enough to know that these are delicious. I ordered 3 to go, and even after the drive home 20 mins later, they held up and stayed warm. I liked the chicken & mushroom the best because it was creamy and flavorful without being salt-salty. Really familiar and comforting flavor. The spicy beef was actually pretty spicy for me (medium) and was a little saltier, but still a solid choice. The meat in the fatay was juicy, and the best part about all 3 was the pastry!! Super fresh and tasted like they were made with care. I need to go back and try more. Service was very friendly as well. I did wait about 10-15 minutes for my to-go order, but I think because they were making them/heating them! read more

Despite Yelp's notification that this location is closed, Rika's Facebook page and a note on their door says that they are only closed for renovations, and to check their Facebook page for updates on when they will be re-opening. I ordered 6 different empanadas, just to get a good sampling of what they had to offer. My favorites were the bacon and prunes (I know it sounds odd, but it had a good combo of salty and sweet), blue cheese (which I didn't expect to enjoy, but I did), sweet beef and the spicy beef (which was actually borderline hot. I forgot to ask to have them fried, so I got them baked instead. They were still good, but lets be honest, everything is better when its fried. The service was warm and accommodating. Wow! Thanks to Youngie and Peter Hyung, this was the spot we headed to after the World Breaking Beer Tasting Event at Santa Anita. I love the fact these are handmade and will take a little bit of time, so don't come here in a rush, especially if you're with a decent sized group. With that being said, it didn't take THAT long before we were stuffing our faces with these delicious pockets of "crust' filled with meat/veggies. I was able to try the chicken, which consisted of chopped chicken, onions, bell peppers, boiled eggs, and green olives. Even with that list of ingredients, it didn't wow me, nor was it that tasty. With that being said, I think it's because I had the beef (which consisted of the same ingredients but had ground beef instead of the chicken) which had a lot more flavor to it. Youngie shared her Fatay (Arabian Empanda) that had ground beef, fresh tomatoes, lemon juice, bell peppers, onions, garlic, and parsley. The Fatay was my favorite when it came to the 3 empanadas I was able to sample that day. Thanks to Peter Hyung and Chai, they decided to also try the pizza they served here. Even though others in our party were already close to being stuffed, when the pizza came out, everyone ended up getting a slice. Contrary to one of the people in our party (ahem) who said it tasted like "Di'Gorno's" it did not. "Rika's Pizza" was what we ordered. That bad boy came with a really good (not too tart) tomato sauce, mozzarella, Pepperoni, Green Onions, Bell Peppers, Ham, Mushrooms, Sausage, and Black Olives. This pizza was FRESH and the crust (thin) was outstanding. It was nicely crusted on the bottom (almost like a cracker), but SOFT the rest of the way. It was cooked, perfectly, without the soft parts being too soggy, and without the cracker like bottom being too dry. The ingredients were quality (though not like a deli), but still awesome. I'm not really in the area much, but if I am, I will make sure I make a stop here, order a Fatay and maybe a small (if I'm by myself) pizza and eat until food coma or the "Itis" takes me away. read more

LOVE THIS PLACE! We started off with the empanadas which are baked and not fried--tender,light and yummy. We had some of the sweet ones (ground beef with raisins, chopped eggs and green olives), one with eggplant, and one with shredded chicken. All delicious. Followed by a green salad-fresh and crisp. Next we had a platter of ham and cheese sandwiches--- order them toasted, they are great! After that came pizza. We ordered the 4 in 1, which was 1/4 Pepperoni, 1/4 ham&pineapple, 1/4 roasted red pepper and garlic, and 1/4 veggie. Fabulous! And we ended with the homemade flan with cream and dulce de leche. CALL AHEAD TO MAKE SURE THEY HAVE THE EMPANADAS YOU WANT! Came in at about 1045 AM & placed my order & paid for 8 empanadas. 10 mins later the guy that took my order informed me they had no fatay (ordered 3 of those & it was the main reason I came to rikas in the first place). He said it'll take an hour to make the filling. Really?!?! You just opened 45 mins ago & you're not even prepared? I thought it was so unprofessional that he tells me AFTER I paid & waited for 10 minutes. I almost asked for a refund but decided to just get 3 different special empanadas (same price as a fatay, regular ones are cheaper) to replace the 3 fatay. I'll admit all of the empanadas were pretty good but my favorite are the chopped beef, spicy beef, caprese (almost tastes like pizza to me), bacon & egg, & the chicken & mushroom. For some reason I didn't care for the empanadas when I came here for the first time months ago but I'm glad I gave it another chance because they're pretty amazing. 2 stars for the lack of good customer service though. read more

Whomp whomp..... We went here last Friday night close to closing and all they had available was the empanadas (which was OK, because I LOVE empanadas). They have a huge menu though with a large variety, so we were looking forward to trying some different things. But alas-Our hopes were dashed. Here is what I thought about the empanadas- WAY too many olives. In all of them! Even the chimichurri had olives! It was overpowering. Oh- and just an FYI they charge $1.50 for extra chimichurri. They didn't charge us that night because I asked for the hook-up since they had nothing else we could order. But dammmmnnnn that's a steep price for a lil container of chimi! Rika's Empanadas is a hidden treasure of Glendora. It's located in the middle of an unsuspecting shopping plaza with professional offices. Parking is fairly easy to deal with but I came on a Tuesday evening at around 5:30pm. It's curious that they sell pizza here but I guess it's not that far off from selling empanadas. I like that it's a very down-to-earth place with cutesy decor. The woman who served us was very nice and patient while my guests and I looked over the menu. They have plenty to choose from, whether you are vegetarian or a meat-lover like myself. I ordered the fatay, sweet meat, and eggplant. My favorite was the sweet meat :) The fatay had a nice twist to it by squeezing lemon on top of it. Very yummy. Unfortunately, I was disappointed by the eggplant empanada but it might just be because I like meat way too much. For three people who ordered threee empanadas each, the total bill came out to be $17~ and I was very pleased. We were all full and it didn't break my piggy bank. I highly recommend this place to folks who want something different in Glendora that isn't a chain restaurant. Support your local mom & pop restaurants! read more

To put it simply, I felt like my group and I were "trolled"' by the employees of Rika's. There is no way a restaurant would knowingly treat its customer's this poorly unless it was on purpose. Very sad, yes I agree, but I believe it to be true for my dining experience at Rika's. When we arrived, the restaurant was full. My friend ordered to-go so we could eat in the car. Moments after ordering two tables left allowing us to grab seats. I think there was some confusion as I believe most patrons eating-in would order through a server. I can understand that the staff were confused as to why we would need plastic cups for the drink fountain (they thought we had ordered to-go, I get it) so we could get tap water. (We had just hiked Fish Canyon and were rather thirsty, but overall we had spent over $100 on food so I didn't feel it was too much to ask for). I ask a staff member for some cups to get water from the drink fountain, he tells me water will be 'brought out.' Strange, but I thought 'OK' and waited patiently and no water came. Now fairly parched I asked again if we could have some water to drink while we waited for our food explaining that we were eating here. The cashier looked befuddled, went and grabbed glasses and asked how many waters we wanted, rather rudely. So rudely that my friends were afraid to ask for tap water as they feared the server's reaction; so my friend and I ordered two for our table of four. How sad is that? I have worked in a restaurant so I understand how it is to be a server, but please, when the service is so rude that customers become intimidated to ask for things - I do not care if these are the best pastries on planet Earth, the experience is ruined. Without seeming the least bit interested, she brings our drinks. She asks if we'd all like silverware. As we have no settings in front of us except for place mats I can't believe what I'm being asked but I say "yes." My receive our pizzas which are not what my friend ordered; they both have the same toppings, we had ordered two different types of pizzas. Lost in translation I guess, no biggie. We decide we are ok with what we have and dig in. The pizza is very, very good. I wish I could have spent more time enjoying it than dealing with what happened next. Two people in my group had made to-go orders. The 1st to-go order is brought out on a metal pizza tray. My friend politely explains that she wanted the order to take home, so could it please be boxed up? The employee leaves to the kitchen and never comes back. My other friend's "to-go" order arrives, and guess what, his empanadas are brought to him, at our table, on a metal pizza tray. He also explains that his order was to-go; the employee takes the tray back to the kitchen. He arrives again, shortly, WITH THE EMPANADAS STILL ON THE METAL PIZZA TRAY. My friend, now frustrated, asks for his order to be put in a to-go box and employee finally obliges. I have to fit this in somewhere also. Sometime at the beginning of the meal, my friend had ordered a glass of milk. This also did not show up until mid-way through the meal and only when my friend went to the counter to ask about it. And finally, as we are leaving, we decide to solve the riddle of where my 1st friend's to-go order has gone. She asks the server about her order, I think he asks her if she wants to take it to-go. I am losing it at this point but don't want to make a scene. We can't finish the two pizzas so my friend asks for a to-go box. He is given a smaller plastic take-out box for empanadas instead of the cardboard pizza takeout box that is readily being handed out to other guests. They just didn't like us. I'm not sure why. I hate to say it has anything to do with race, but I really feel we were discriminated against because we were Asian. I have been using Yelp for years but have never felt compelled to write a review until now. You know my cheap-and-good mantra? Well this hole-in-the-wall in the most deserted mini mall I've ever seen, has that mantra in spades. Ignore the fact that they have pizza, though locals seem to come in for that. This is a legit Argentinian joint with all the respect for tasty, meaty fare that country exudes. We stumbled upon this place as we waited for niecey-poo to get out of her dance rehearsals and are glad we did. The empanadas here are just delicious; not too salty and filled with enough good stuff to make your taste buds zing. And btw, when they say spicy, they mean spicy. Went here on Saturday after seeing all the positive reviews. It did not disappoint!! Absolutely delicious food! The restaurant is a small little place in a strip mall, very mom and pop, which alway make the best spots. Service was great, prompt, waitress was friendly and attentive. We ordered a dozen empanadas- cheese, beef, sweet beef (had raisins in it), and chicken. All of them were fantastic, but my favorite s hand down were the cheese and the sweet beef. Reminded me so much of the Chilean empanadas I grew up eating. My husband ordered the Milanesa sandwich and it was soooo good and huge! Definitely enough to share (and he's a really hearty eater!). Best part was how delicious and super AFFORDABLE it was! Empanadas average $2 each! Our total bill for the meal plus drinks was it $41! That's great compared to our average $70-80 dinner every time we go put with our party of 4. We ordered too much and had leftovers...yumm! We will absolutely be back! Why aren't there more empanada places around!? Especially when they are THIS good! So, Rika's is unassuming and easy to miss, just pull into the strip mall before the train tracks and you'll see it. Don't know what you want? No worries. Just go in and ask for anything! You can't lose. The bacon and prune is amazing. One of the tastiest most delicious pieces of food i've ever had. So many options, I've had all of them and can say that every one is great. The price is fantastic. A hidden gem in Glendora! They specialize in empanadas. The empanada I had was luke warm in the center. I think they premake all of them because the one I had was slightly crispy on the outside but border line cold and warm in the center. Thanks to yelp for helping me find a local place like this. The empanadas were authentic and delicious. Haven't had any this good since I was in the Salvadorian area of DC. Loved the Fatay empanada. It came with a lemon wedge on top. If you've tried an Armenian pizza (lamajoun), it tasted just like that...so good! Reasons for a 4 star review (instead of 5): -Ricotta/spinach empenada had too much egg compared to the ricotta and spinach imo -caprese could've used more and (fresher) basil Minor complaints. Yummy.... Small bites, very filling. Favorite is the bacon and prunes empanada. Order ahead and pick up instead of waiting for it. They take about 10 mintues to prepare or bake. This place is so good! My husbands family is from Argentina and my mother in law is a great cook. This place is the next best thing to her food. We love going there and soaking in the culture. Everything is made fresh and delicious. We order cakes and empanadas by the dozen for all of our parties. Going for some pizza and watching world cup games are a blast. We now live closer to this location and have gone quite a bit when I don't want to cook. They also have a small market section to by Argentine delicacies like mate and candies. read more

My family's from Peru, but we tend to prefer Argentinian-style empanadas over our own, so when we heard there was another empanaderia (besides House of Sandwiches--also in Glendora), we had to come check this place out. I tend to be a bit of an empanada snob since I order them from every restaurant that offers them, so take this review with a grain of salt. * Beef (baked): 3/5 - The baked beef were not that great. They were under-salted and had too much filler besides beef inside, in my opinion. * Sweet Beef (baked): 3.5/5 - This had both a sweet and a bit of a sour kick, which was a welcome addition to the standard beef. * Beef (fried): 3.5/5 - The fried beef empanada at House of Sandwiches completely destroys this one--it wasn't bad, though. * Chicken (fried): 3/5 - I've had better, but it's still pretty tasty. * Fatay (baked): 4/5 - Really good. It's a tomato-y ground beef with some other ingredients cooked on pizza dough. It was surprisingly good. I strongly recommend this. The workers are nice, but they just don't really cut it for me when there's another cheap place for Argentinian empanadas so nearby. I really like Rika's we have been there a few times now. The empanadas are very good, the dough is obviously homemade and they have many different varieties. (Look on their website for the menu) Their pizza is good, its just not a "regular" type of pizza. The dough is very light and fluffy. My only critque would be, the cheese is put on with a heavy hand and is just melted, not browned. Ask for the pizza "well-done" and I think it will be mo betta. If you like verrrryyyy cheesy pizza, you will like it. The service is the best part, and the atmosphere, it is very homey and casual and especially family -friendly, it is obviously a mom and pop type place and I like that. We were there on a Saturday night and it was fun to see all the types of people, large parties, older men watching soccer... cool place, check it out. read more

Holy good Wow, these are probably the best I have had outside of Buenos Aires and of course my kitchen. They have all kinds of fillings, to include some breakfast choices that are down right delicious. The service is great and even better, THEY TAKE AMEX. Always nice. This place is phenomenal! I've tried almost all of the empanadas and they are simply delicious. One of my favorite things to get here is the pizza though.. Muzarella y Morrones is the best! For dessert the alfajores is a MUST have! Perfect amount of sweetness and the texture is also just perfection. The atmosphere is very cozy, family oriented and fun, the staff is friendly as well. Overall the empanadas were not all that.... I much prefer the empanadas from Titos in El Monte. The meat was not very flavorful and the egg of kind of ruined it for me because it's more of a filler. Me and my father went to this place last night (a Saturday) after craving something different. Given how culturally un-diverse Glendora is, this place was a nice change. I heard about this place on Yelp and had to debate between this one and House of Sandwiches across town, and this one was a lot closer, so here we went. The place is in a mini-strip mall next to the railroad and the intersection of Foothill and Grand, and it's located to another restaurant (the Silver Spoon) that I'm not personally a fan of. I never really saw many cars come in and out of the parking lot by the restaurant, so I was hesitant to go in there, expecting the worst. I was surprised. Pleasantly. The place was crowded at 6:45 on a Saturday, which is usually a good sign. However, it was deserted when we left an hour later, which was a little bit creepy (I also got the stink-eye from one of the waitstaff when we left, so -1 star). We have a family friend from Argentina who makes empanadas the old-fashioned way, so I don't consider myself a empanada-virgin. Between me and my father we had: -Chicken and Mushroom: The flavor profile of the onion and the mushroom works very well together, and it was right out of the oven when we got it, so props on that. The chicken was tender and the empanada wasn't dry at all. I liked it a lot. -Spinach and Ricotta: These were a little bit larger than the others, and I think the addition of more ricotta and less parmesan would have made this a little less dry. As it was, the empanada was good, with hard-boiled eggs on the top and a layer of ham on the bottom. The addition of thicker, hand-cut ham and more actual spinach would have made this an excellent empanada. I think this one earns a 'meh'. Bacon and Prune: Ooey and delicious. I cut mine in half, and the cheesey, bacony goodness can spilling out onto the plate. Dates and bacon work very well together, and the fairly subtle flavor of the prune wasn't masked by too much cheese or bacon. I liked this one. Sweet Beef: This one is just basically the beef empanada with raisins. The most traditional empanada I can imagine. This one wasn't superbly moist, but it wasn't as bad as some I've had. Green olives, hard-boiled egg, onion, bell pepper, beef. The one at House of Sandwiches is very moist but to the point of dripping oil onto the plate, which is why I liked this less-drippy one better. It's hard to go wrong with a classic, but the execution here was merely average. We were served promptly, and even in the busy restaurant the server had the courtesy to explain exactly what the empanadas were to my father (who's a little bit illiterate in non-American food). He asked us several times for our order while we were deliberating, which after the third time got a little bit annoying. It was our first time here, so I don't blame him too much for it, considering most people will just sit down and order exactly what they want. The atmosphere is nice, and the lighting wasn't industrial or way-too-dark, like Viva Madrid in Claremont. Noise was 3/10, enough to make a nice background but quiet enough that I could still talk and be heard. Definitely going here again. read more
