    Vegetarian Paella

I was looking for a nice Valentine's Eve dinner spot with plenty of vegetarian options, and Viva Madrid immediately came to mind. This was actually my fourth time dining here, and I can't believe I'm only now writing a review. Located in the heart of Claremont inside an old building, the entrance almost feels like a little secret. You walk past what looks like a jewelry store before reaching the hostess stand. They don't take reservations, so definitely come early or be prepared to stroll around town while waiting to be seated. As soon as you walk in, you're welcomed by a dimly lit, intimate space that feels cozy without being overly quiet. The walls are decorated beautifully, and since it was Valentine's Day weekend, the restaurant was decked out in red hearts and balloons--like St. Valentine himself came through and spread love everywhere. Our server let us know that the main entrées take about 45 minutes to prepare, so we were advised to order those first. I went straight for the vegetarian paella. To start, we ordered the pan con tomate--simple sourdough toast with olive oil and tomato chutney, but absolutely delicious. My friend, who had just returned from Spain, lit up after the first bite and said it tasted just like what she had there. That pretty much set the tone for the rest of the night. We also shared some potatoes and vegetables, and when the paella arrived, I added a side of pulpo (octopus) for extra protein. It was cooked to perfection and paired beautifully with the vegetarian paella. Every single dish we tried was flavorful and thoughtfully prepared. We ended the evening with the limoncello cake, which was light, bright, and the perfect sweet finish. Overall, another fantastic experience at Viva Madrid. Consistently great food, a romantic atmosphere, and a place I'll happily keep coming back to.

4.5 but I'll round up. My husband and I wanted to try something different for date night and stopped by. Staff was welcoming and explained the process on ordering. Food started coming out promptly and we really enjoyed the experience and our dinner. We had the chicken empanada, bacon wrapped dates, a few meat dishes, everything was super yummy. We will definitely be back!

Viva Madrid! is our favorite spot in Claremont. The food and drinks are delicious, the staff are very friendly and helpful and the ambiance is fun and relaxing. We love to order the meat paella which is scrumptious! The garlic shrimp, chicken empanadas and dates are our favorites. If you're in the area you've got to check our Viva!

Sometimes in life things get f*cked up. What matters is how you react when things get f*cked up. Viva Madrid! came highly recommended and I get why. The menu is pretty large with tons of great tapas options. We tried several of these and everything was delicious. Some of my favorites were Esparragos Con Jamon and Champinoes Rellenos. The food was fresh, everything was great. The service was also great. I think the gentleman who helped us was named Jared. He was kicking booty on a busy night making drinks and serving food. He also showed a real passion for the menu and took the time to explain various items. The ambiance of the place reminds me of Disneyland's Pirates of the Caribbean. It's a very fun vibe. So what went wrong? The paella was overcooked. I tried my best to eat it, but it was not edible. When I explained they were very understanding and apologetic. I assume the owner even came over and apologized and thanked us for not yelling. Look it was a bummer the paella was messed up but sometimes things don't go right. They made it right and getting angry on my end does no good. An interesting first experience at this establishment but that won't stop me from returning one day. Everything but the paella was great, staff is awesome and it's a cool vibe.

Came to Viva Madrid for my birthday meal. Food was better than expected. We orders various tapas such as bacon wrapped dates, Garlic bread , garlic shrimp , jamón con melón , and empanada de pollo which were all good. As an entree we shared the costilla de cordero ( lamb ribs) which came with potatoes, asparagus , and baked dates which tasted amazing . For dessert I recommend the crema catalana which is similar to a creme brûlée and very good as well.Be aware the restaurant is kinda small and gets easily packed . I will definitely be returning .

I finally made it to Viva Madrid. I have to say the waitress provided excellent service. I ordered me a mocktail because I was driving. I got the Refresco de Lavanda. It was tasty but the only issue was the glass was full to the rim with ice. I got about 4 oz of drink in a 12 oz glass, kinda disappointed. I started with a light tapas which consisted of manchego cheese and olives. A light snack before my meal. For my entree, I ordered the rib eye, but they call it the Bistec con Salsa Rioja. A big juicy piece of meat smothered in a wine reduction sauce. It was tasty and came with green beans and a baked potato topped with a creamy herb dressing. Very satisfying. The ambiance was perfect for a date night, small, dark, and dressed up with traditional Spanish ornaments. I'd like to come back and try some of more tapas as they have an extensive tapas menu.

Spanish vibes all around, large menu, delicious Sangria, top notch service! "see pictures" everything we ordered was delicious, but our mistake that we made was ordering everything at once, make sure you order the tapas slowly and take your time. Highly recommended!

Visiting Claremont and decided to check out this place, reminiscing my time in Madrid. Only had tapas, which were so good. My favorite were the Boquerones Viva Madrid and Pintxo Moruno! Thanks Melanie for your help and amazing attitude:)

I haven't been here in 10 years and it's still as wonderful as I remember. They don't take reservations, so we waited for about 20 minutes during a weekend night. It has a huge menu, a great place to share tapas and trying various dishes! It's located in Claremont Village near a bunch of other restaurants and boutiques . We found free parking on the streets right across so it was pretty convenient. RABO DE TORO - Oxtail stew- I don't usually order soup but this was very comforting, hearty, and delicious 9/10 GAMBAS A LA PLANCHA- delicious jumbo garlic shrimp 9/10 CALAMARES EN SU TINTA- squid ink calamares with tomatoes- best sauce and reminded me of pasta 10/10 PAN CON TOMATE- artisan sourdough with tomato chutney- just ok , i wanted to dip bread in the other dishes sauces, but I didn't care for the chutney taste from this bread 5/10 EL ORO- Irish whiskey with house ginger drink - recommended as most popular and it was delicious . They're also known for their sangrias but I tried this drink . 10/10 Can't wait to come back to try the other tapas!

Viva Madrid is probably one of my favorite spots in Claremont. When we arrived today, there was already a line forming and still 10 minutes until Viva Madrid opened. The space inside the restaurant is fairly small, definitely would avoid bringing larger parties. There's always music going and soft lighting, it has a very laid back atmosphere. We've always had great service here. Our server was pretty on it, even while manning the bar and helping g tables at the same time. The food also may take a bit longer to come out depending on what you order, but it's kind of nice not rushing through the meal. As for the food, we haven't tried anything we didn't like! Our favorite tapas would have to be the Chorizo A La Rioja, Gambas Gabardinas, and Esparragos Con Jamon. But there's still a lot of the menu we haven't explored. Can't wait to come back and try more!

Came here for my daughters 24th day. Place did not disappoint. We all shared Samgria. The cheese, the potatoes, the paella, octopus, and calamari was outstanding. The ambiance of the place is really a vibe. The only thing is don't sit next to kitchen it gets hot. I recommend !

You can also snag a seat on the patio as they do have space heaters they can turn on at your request. The best part of the meal was the appetizers, definitely need to get both the bread and the shrimp together so that you can soak up all the delicious shrimp sauce. The shrimp was 10/10: juicy, crispy, and oh so flavorful. I wish they were more proud of their roots and didn't dumb down the menu as they called the Gambas Al Ajillo "Sautéed Shrimp". Initially, we were seated in the patio. A big shout out to our waiter Pedro who was so attentive with 10/10 spectacular customer service. He gave us a heads up that the kitchen was running behind so our food wait was going to be a bit long. He also gave us the spectacular recommendation to get both the bread and the shrimp appetizers together so that you can soak up all the delicious shrimp sauce. It turned out to be the highlight of our night! As the night progressed, the wind picked up so much that even the space heaters couldn't keep the chill out and we asked to be seated indoors. Unfortunately it seems their policy is for the customer to speak with the hostess directly rather than the server assisting us. When dining at a $$$ establishment, I expect a better customer experience than having to ask the front for a different table and then getting a condescending tone from the hostess about being booked out despite being 1/2 empty. Then when seated inside, unfortunately our interactions with our inside waiter Jorge was very short and brief everytime. It felt like he was running away as fast as he could the moment he even got near as he would drop the plate and then run. Our patio server Pedro ended up saving the night as he checked up on us frequently even though we were no longer seated in his section. Enough about ambiance and service, now onto the food: Got the: 1. Rustic Toast and Tomatoes: 8/10, The dish would be made better with more toast. Additionally, the tomatoes seemed almost pureed and I think it would have been better if it was chopped. Still it was a perfect pair to the Sautéed Shrimp and I'm really just nitpicking at this delicious appetizer because I wanted more of it, lol 2. Sautéed Shrimp: 10/10, the shrimp were juicy, crisp, fresh, and just very scrumptious. It's what every gambas al ajillo dreams of growing up to be. 3. Paella Negro: 9/10, the octopus inside was perfectly cooked: soft, moist, and perfectly tender 4. Mediterranean Sea Bass: 8/10, the fish was cooked very well and without any fishy taste or excessive bones TLDR: A great place to impress a date or hold business meal. If money and social conventions were of no object, I would come everyday to get their sautéed shrimp so I can stop drooling in my dreams.

The whole experience is what makes it special--the ambiance, the Latin flavors, the service, everything is on point. But what really sets it apart is the folklórico dance performance. You don't just eat here, you get a full experience. It feels like a beautiful little piece of Spain brought to Costa Mesa. The dinner is like a full three-course experience while you watch the dancers, and it's just so memorable and unique. If you're in Orange County, this is a must-visit spot--you really should treat yourself at least once. Also, if you stay after dinner, it opens up into a club and you don't have to pay entrance into the club. They have a nice bar outside, so the ambience is flowing Ali he with drinks. The evenings that I've stayed after they have two rooms OK they have a DJ room and then they have the band room, I don't know if they have a band every single night but the times I've been there they do and I like that you one room is very club vibe and then you can go into the band room and it's more like salsa lit up vibing. I myself still have a gift card for their café side that I'm excited to use soon and check out. Can't wait to go back this week.

And while I love the…read moreevent, I have to say the fact that this establishment still allows SMOKING on the patio is really disturbing. People are actively moving therefore they breathe that disgusting stuff twice as much. And don't let me start on breathing that while eating! For me personally...I already ended up in the hospital, because of second hand smoking, once. And I really don't want to do it again. Also what would be handy...is another LIVE bartender. Whoever is there so far looks like he's there as a punishment. Wanted to order a drink at the bar and the guy totally overlooked me. and that's not the first time. So yes...if the place can fix these two things, it would be a way more pleasant experience for, as I believe, many. Thank you.

Vaca is a Spanish tapas style restaurant with great meat and cocktails…read more Some of my meal highlights was the bikini sandwich and the night's special, which was a perfectly cut piece of steak. I was disappointed in the patatas bravas, however, which I felt lacked much flavor. The cocktails were exceptional. I enjoyed a classic dirty martini, their specialty vaca tonic (A+ cocktail), and had their non-alcoholic drink called Starry Night (very delicious, but not worth $16). The setting is quite breath-taking, with the restaurant decorated with elaborate cuts of meat and wine bottles. The lighting is very warm-toned and elegant. Overall, we had a delicious meal and cocktails before heading to the Segerstrom (just a quick walk away). The service was excellent and the meal great, but I think the whole experience was heavily overpriced for what you get.

Our food also came out fairly quickly, which I appreciated. I started with the Vaca Tonic which was delicious. For food, the standout was the La Bola -- a crispy potato ball with flavorful ground meat inside. I'd come back just for that. The scallops, however, were just okay. They were very small for "sea" or "diver" scallops, and the menu didn't specify what kind they were. The sauce was fine but nothing memorable. I was most excited for the wagyu oyster cut steak and ordered it medium, but it arrived more rare than expected and was surprisingly chewy rather than tender. Overall, the experience didn't quite live up to the hype for me. I love tapas, but this spot fell short.

I can emphatically say he's the best musician from the lineup. We were there on an off day, i think it was a Thursday, and we experienced another musician, David, he's ok, but he takes super LONG breaks, we specifically went there for the live "now Thursday music" which is great, but David just retreats to breaks tooooooo long. The music isn't upbeat. He's talented, but for the ambience, the musicians should make it fun and upbeat with some medium tempos as well. Roger, out of the lineup, is by far the most fun and upbeat, and he is so nice and personable! We went for lite appetizers and drinks, but roger made it that much more fun. We ended up staying until he was done. We gave him a very nice tip, and he was so grateful. Throughout the evening, we requested a few tunes, and he played them! We love his music and his energy! Roberto was fantastic as well, with positive energy and very friendly! We will be back soon, and will check Casa's website for Roger's dates!! He's MAGNIFICENT!!!!!!

If you want good paella, do not come here…read more This was honestly the worst paella I've ever had, which was really disappointing because the restaurant itself had a nice atmosphere and live music. We ordered a half seafood and half meat paella, with added lobster and pork belly. Unfortunately, the actual food was terrible. Main issues: * The bottom of the seafood side was completely black and burnt instead of having a crispy socarrat. There's a huge difference between crispy rice and burnt rice. * The lobster was severely overcooked, burnt, and tasted terrible. * The pork belly was an extra charge, but there was barely any visible pork belly in the dish. It honestly just looked like tiny bacon pieces. * All of the meat throughout the paella was severely overcooked. Positives: * Our waiter was very nice. * The ambiance was good. * The live music added a fun vibe. * It was my birthday, so they gave me a complimentary ice cream dessert at the end, which I appreciated. Unfortunately, none of that made up for how bad the paella itself was.

Anniversary choice? Yes!…read more The online pics didn't do justice to how intimate and special it can feel. If you choose to sit inside, it is really intimate/romantic. Small space with others close by but they manage to make it feel intimate somehow. Anywho - we didn't chose that option! We sat outside in the covid created sidewalk space. It wasn't as intimate but we love it outside and with the heater on, I was perfectly comfy! Didn't take pics. There are already tons, and I would've be able to get a better shot. But let me tell you what we had and LOVED all of it: - Deviled eggs - favored with olive. Very tasty. - Papas - the hot sauce and aoili made this delicious! - A creamy goat cheese, fig and honey tostado - short rib on small piece of polenta. Fantastic! - Mac and cheese. Divine! I'll be thinking about this for a loooong time! The machego cheese takes it to next level. The pasta - not like any macaroni I've ever seen, was delightful to eat. - Octopus. This was our "wild side" order, because hubby has been disappointed by octopus in the past because it's been cooked until tough. But we took a chance, closing out our meal on this dish, and man we were so glad we did! It's chargrilled, has a bit of smokiness to it, sitting in a lot of drawn butter. It's like a scallop but with more chew to it. It was delicious! The only not so big disappointment was that the reservation site asks if it's a special occasion. So I selected anniversary. But apparently, the staff don't read that I go because no mention was made of our anniversary. I wouldn't have cared except that they asked in advance, so I thought there would be some acknowledgment or maybe a dessert. Wrong! lol! Still, very memorable meal with friendly, knowledgeable, and helpful servers who went out of their way to find a working heater for my table.

Shrimp: good but not very flavorful. The shrimp didn't absorb the flavor and juices at all. Patas bravas: crispy but there was something off about the sauce. Lamb burger: best thing we had on the menu Short rib: good texture and decent flavor Overall nothing blew me away. I was a bit disappointed given the price. It's hard to get Spanish food right.
