Their pupusas are grilled perfectly so they are slightly crispy on the outside yet soft on the inside. I tried the chicharron and it was pretty good. Their tamales are good too. The texture of the masa reminds me of mashed potatoes. It would be perfect if it was just slightly more moist. The chicken inside is very flavorful but you have to be careful of the bones. I'm not expecting 3 star dining but their presentation of the food needs a bit of work. I think the food is good & the prices reasonable. I don't think it is the best Salvadorian in the area but I'd go back if I don't want to drive to San Mateo for my Salvadorian food fix. read more

Rincon Sabroso is my favorite type of restaurant: a no frills, food-first joint with meals you can't get just anywhere--in this case, the El Salvadorean specialty, pupusas! The boy and I ordered the chicken and cheese, beef and cheese, and loroco and cheese pupusas as well as the chicken tamale, an inexpensive dinner at ~$14 total. I was initially worried about the speed of service since multiple Yelp reviews mentioned slowness, but our order arrived without any delay, within 10 minutes. My favorite was probably the beef pupusa, but everything was scrumptious. One can really taste the freshness of the made-to-order pupusas, the filling hot and cheese melty. So happy to have found this delicious pupuseria off the beaten path in my city! Looking forward to coming back. read more

I'm a little conflicted as I write this review. On one hand, the authentic taste is great, but on the other, the heavy greasy aspect to all of their food makes it tough to give more than 2.5 stars. For example, the pupusas are delicious, but literally dripping with grease. The sopas are delish too, but only a little less greasy (no dripping). The one item I have had that wasn't as greasy was the chicken posole. It wasn't quite spicy enough, but it was yummy, and that's why this review got bumped up from 2 to 3 stars. read more

This is everything a hole in the wall Mexican joint is supposed to be. What's more, they have the elusive half-liter glass bottles of Mexican Coca Cola with all their cane-sugary goodness! (for the metric impaired, that's 16.9070114 ounces... 0.9070114 whopping ounces bigger then the pint bottles I remember as a kid, and I don't have to settle for those little 355ml/12.0039781oz bottles anymore. Sweet!) Other pros: The default salsa has a great flavor & is actually mildly challenging. They have the squirt bottles of red & green sauce for a bit of variety (both are good). The asada is aways fresh, tender & I've never found it under or overcooked yet. I'm sure I'm not pronouncing the name right, but I don't have to: the Android Yelp app finds it in one try by voice when I say (in my Chicago accent), "rahn-cahn sah-brah-sah". Cons? Chips are maybe a touch saltier than I'd like, but whoop-dee-doo, right? It's not in the prettiest strip mall nor is it the prettiest establishment you'll ever see, but c'mon... this is lowbrow Mexican, amigo! Live a little! PS - I'm checking 'no' on the "good for kids" question. Not because it isn't, but because I don't want to have to endure your snotty nosed brats when I'm eating my burrito. Rincon Sabroso is a little place, but it has a great selection of dishes and meats as well as great prices to go along with it. They accepted my restaurant.com certificate with no problems, so for $12, I was able to order: -Beef Milanesa plate (came with some veggies, cole slaw, rice, beans & corn tortillas) -5 Tacos -2 Pupusas -1 Empanada Obviously not the highest quality food, but just such a great price. The empanada is not the normal empanada that I was expecting. However, it was very moist and delicious! They make the pupusas after you order them, and the open kitchen let me see them make all my food. read more

2nd time I had dinner here. Stars is now 5! Last time when I had burrito I noticed that there are many seafood menu. I came back to try it out. I chose Tilapia, since it was the only one with a picture. It was so good! Because I am from island (Japan), I love fish. Tilapia is big enough for me and simple flavor but full of umami. I've been cracking up at the 1- and 2-star reviews where the primary complaint was that the ladies working there were rude or that they wouldn't serve you if you didn't speak Spanish. To the second point first, that's just wrong. I don't speak Spanish and they took my order and money just fine. :) As to the first point, grow up. And maybe, just maybe they were responding in kind to your air of superiority. Not once in the several times I've been there has anyone been rude to me. Onto the review... I discovered this place purely by accident one day. I had gotten a car wash at the gas station on the corner and while I was waiting in line, I saw the restaurant across the dilapidated strip mall next door. I was in the mood for Mexican food, so I resolved to try it out after my car was washed. Since it was lunchtime, the line was long and slow. In fact, it took over 25 minutes to finally get to the register from the front door. Plus, every single table was full. You what I took this for? A very popular place where people were willing to wait to get their food. Not being in a rush, I decided to sit tight in line and go with it. I was not disappointed. When I go to a new Mexican restaurant, I always order the same thing: Carnitas Plate. I've found that with Mexican food, while Carnitas is fairly simple, straight-forward meat and commonplace, it's also very easy to get wrong. I've found that if the restaurant doesn't serve good Carnitas, other dishes will suffer. This is not the case with Rincon Sabroso. Their Carnitas is "excelente!" And they also prepare it the way I like it, which is to take the shredded meat and put on the flat top to create some crunch. It also helps to render out the fat and concentrate the salt. The plate comes with the standard fare of rice and frijoles with guacamole, some lettuce, and crema. When you order, they will ask you what kind of tortillas you want. Do not get anything but corn. They make their corn tortillas by hand, using the same masa mixture they use for their pupusas. The tortillas come out big (about 7" in diameter if I were to guess) and thick, but they're light and airy. You get four of them. I never finish the plate. I can only eat half because the tortillas are pretty filling. But who cares? I have more for later! I discovered that taking a late lunch after 1:30 is the best time to go because everyone else is back at work. Today, I got there at about 1:45 and walked right up to the lady at the register who didn't give a damn about my ability to speak Spanish. In fact, she was very patient with me as I'm a little hard of hearing and needed to have a couple of things repeated to me. The woman who brought me my food was also very gracious and kind. Maybe it was my charm and ruggedly handsome looks... Probably not. Or maybe she was just naturally kind. That's probably it. In any case, I'll be going back when I'm in the mood for Mexican food. read more

We also ordered the salsa and guacamole on the side and tamarind Water and horchata. for some reason the messed up the order or didn't reach out to us about the missing item. All the food I had here tastes not as good as Chalateco (Mountain View). It took quite awhile for the food to come out and the restaurant is noisy in an industrial way. Pupusa (pork & cheese) - a bit dry, but comes with a goo amount of pickled cabbage Chicken Tamale - the chicken is very dry, so is the Tamale. Chalateco has way better Tamales. Carnitas Super Burrito - subpar for burritos. Carnitas are very dry and it has a porky taste/smell. I like that it has chunks of avocado, but they don't work well with the rest of the burrito. A hidden gem of a Mexican restaurant indeed! The food served here is true traditional mexican food. Its not like the lunch time taquerias where they mass produce burritos and tacos. This place is a true hole in the wall, less visited, but visited by mainly hungry mexicans looking for some proper food. Prices are great. They have huge super burritos that cost only $6, along with some $2.50 Sopes to drool over. They also have these cheese/meat filled pancakes called Pupusa's for only $2 and come with a side of mexican slaw. The quality is top notch for places like these and the flavors are hard to beat. The carintas are nicely flavored, not overly salt and nice and soft. The al pastor is not as soft, but delicately marinated and has some nice onion bits to enhance the texture. It was a huge tamale, but mostly the masa. Not worth ordering it again. == Place is located in a dying plaza that's kept alive by Hobees. Interior is relatively nice for a hole in the wall. This little gem is tucked in the corner of a plaza on the sleepier side of the tracks. In terms of mexican food, this might actually be my favorite place. The flavors are all very on point, but that stands out most about this place is the fact they put in the effort to make fresh tortillas. I was never a huge fan of corn tortillas but holy snap a bucket of steaming hot tortillas doused with their zesty salsa never fails to hit the spot. If you're here on a cold rainy day, order a bowl of chicken soup and a couple pupusas, those never fail to warm you up. If you're here for breakfast, grab yourself a chorizo plate, those things paired with some fresh tortillas are the best thing you can do for your body in the morning. This place is great but underrated, i hope more people start showing up. read more

Be prepared to wait 25 minutes for some tamales. If they'd mentioned it would take that long to order some, that would've been nice. But they didn't. So it's cold outside in the evening during winter and that's where you gotta wait for your food. So I get here there's maybe 3 tables taken. I order my food and the women working here are just starring at me and gossiping in Spanish which I understand. Waited for my order of 1 pupusa and 2 tacos to go for 50 minutes. I am really patient having worked in restaurants before but this is outrageous there's 4 people in the kitchen no one is wearing gloves everything is being touched by their bare hands even after handling money. I came across this place when I was looking for pupusas in the area. My first visit was two weeks ago and I was impressed by the food and quick service. I went back tonight to pick up more pupusas and tacos and everything was delicious! I would highly recommend placing your order in advance for pick up. They have a great selection of pupusas. This place is freaking awesome! First off, the prices are amazing! I can normally get a meal for around 6/7 bucks. I always get a couple pupusas and tacos (the lengua is my favorite), and you just can't go wrong. They're handmade and fresh, and full of flavor. The meat here actually had flavor, and is always delicious and tender. And service is always super fast. The servers don't speak that much english, but if you point and say numbers, you should be good. Overall, probably the best Mexican/Salvadorian food in Mountain View. read more

Took about a half hour for take-out when they had a steady level of people coming in (i.e., not crowded but not empty). Would probably have made sense for us to order ahead. read more

The best taqueria on the Peninsula. They are known for their papusas and burritos. I recommend getting the super burrito with chorizo, but they also have pastor, carne asada, carnitas, língua, tripas. All are good. They have mastered giving texture to the burrito, they always give the meat a good charring on the grill, and they grill the burrito at the end as well. But when I got there the lady looked at me and ignored me when I'm trying to get my food. She then just picked up my food and proceeded to take my food to my table where I just came from. I got the pork and cheese pupusa, chicken tamale and husband got the super mojado burrito. The food here is amazing and so cheap. They make the pupusas fresh so it takes a bit for your food to get ready but the wait is so with it. The pupusa was a decent soccer, almost the size of the inside of a paper plate. With a generous amount of filling and perfect seasoning. The slaw that comes with it was equally fresh and delicious. The tamale here is money. Big portion size and packed with chicken, potato and veggie. The masa was moist and just the right ratio of fluffy to dense enough to keep the filling inside. Highly recommend getting both for dinner. The burrito was the size of a baby and covered with the best tomatillo sauce I've had in awhile. Parking is easy as it's in a strip mall. This place is very unassuming but like many delicious authentic places, don't judge it by appearance. They also have an app so you can order ahead of time. We'll be back soon! read more

This place is "meh". Will probably try another place next time I'm in town. Was really craving tacos coming in. Lady took a while to notice that I was at the cash register. They have plasma TV menus which was nice and have a wide selection of dishes. Ordered two tacos of lengua and two of tripa. The meat was good but the tortillas were handed to me semi-hard. Ate them quickly since they were cracking when I went in for a bite. The salsas are in a small cart away from site. Since I pretty much work on the Google campus, their free food and restaurants have made the surrounding area a barren wasteland of crappy food options. So occasionally I have to venture out. I walk into Rincon Sabroso and I immediately start feeling the vibe of an authentic taqueria - television in the corner set to a soccer game in Spanish, customers at every table speaking Spanish, and then somewhat goes to the jukebox and the next thing I know the restaurant is blasting some Spanish song. I ordered a boat load tonight since there were so many things to try - pupusas, tacos, and flautas. The tacos were incredible - meat piled on small corn tortillas with cilantro, onions, and hot sauce. You add a squirt of lime and the little tacos become music to the mouth. Big fan of both the carnitas and the carne asada. To spice things up, take a bite of the pickled jalapeno or to cool things down, chomp on the radish. By the way, only $1.25 per taco, but at least three tacos are necessary for a meal. Pupusas filled with bean and cheese is good grub. I smothered hot sauce on them and dug in. The best way to describe pupusas is a mix between a quesadilla and a hot pocket. At 2 bucks a pop, I did not feel guilty ordering a couple of these as well. The main dish of flautas, rice and beans did carry a "normal" price tag though of $9 and change. The flautas were tasty and it did come with four of them (I chose chicken as the meat), but for some reason, I feel that the way to go is a la carte - you get to try a bunch of food and the cost is quite cheap. So six years after my first review, I feel an update is warranted... In short, 5-star flavor... 5-star diarrhea. A friend of ours fell victim to food poisoning from their pupusas recently. If you google "Rincon Sabroso Mountain View Health Inspection", you can see that they've failed city health inspections in the last year for multiple infractions, including not storing food at proper temperatures (e.g. they were storing pork at 65 degrees instead of the required 41), having cockroaches "in various life stages" residing inside, and just being in a general state of disrepair. In fact, they were shut down in February/March until they were able to pass a re-inspection. Sad to see, because for years we loved this place, and although I've never had digestive issues with their food myself, I'll probably think twice before visiting again.
