Had lunch on the patio of Rips on a Saturday and it was a vibe. Started with some cocktails cause it's five o'clock somewhere. Had the Lady St. Germaine and it was delicious and I tasted the Moscow Mule which was fantastic too. Here's my food reviews below: Crab & Brie Soup: 1000/10 my favorite. After 20 minutes my patience wore thin and we left. Remove the option for reservations if your walk-ins are more important than the people who follow the rules and call in advance. Call and make a reservation. Especially if you want the view of the lake. Be sure and ask for or check on the daily specials. The pasta dishes look like they could feed a family of four. The menu offering is big and the service is attentive. The meals are a bit on the pricey side but the quality of everything makes it acceptable. It's been over 30 years since I'd eaten at Rips. I remember how good the onion rings were so we took a short trip over the Causeway to see if they are still as good. I'm so happy they are!! Big but the onions are thin and perfectly cooked. We also had the catfish/shrimp platter and the shrimp covered grouper. Don't miss out on the Lady St Germain martini, delicious and dangerous. Host was very grumpy when we first entered and had the attitude that if we don't have a reservation we won't get a table. Which is very unfortunate because it's the first thing you see when entering any restaurant setting the tone. We sat down immediately and noticed quite a few flies flying around us. Onto appetizers we order the boudin balls and the calamari. The boudin balls and homemade sauce were very flavorful and seasoned well. The calamari tasted freezer burned and the breading could not stay on. For entrees we ordered spaghetti and a roast beef poboy. The server hinted that the spaghetti is similar to the canned spaghetti'os so it was replaced with the combination with added oysters. The roast beef was enjoyable but it was nothing spectacular. The fried oysters were over cooked and very pasty. Luckily the fried shrimp was enjoyable. Fries were greasy. With two glasses of wine the total was $112. Not worth it and will not be coming back. Rips on the lake was a decent first time experience. The location of the restaurant is right across from the lake which gave us great views of the water from our table. We sat inside by the bar at one of the tables by the window since is was a little to windy to sit outside that day, but they do have a nice front patio with seating and views of the lake. The building is older and the stairs are steep out front but they do have an elevator if you have struggle with getting up stairs. Our service was fast and we had a new waiter who did great. All of our food was good except the shrimp and crab bisque had zero crab in it. It was basically just shrimp in a heavy cream. The blueberry bread pudding was the star of the show. Wow! This place is top notch! Rips is located on the Mandeville lakefront and it is beautiful. We had a reservation on Friday night and it was crowded, but we were seated immediately. The oyster Rockefeller bread is a must!! This appetizer is big and delicious. I could have eaten the sauce with a spoon. I will 100% order this again! The trout Audrey was awesome! We visited Rips on the lake on a random Wednesday and it was quite honestly a great find! We were seated in the patio area and the view of the lake was amazing, even with the storm blowing up the water onto the street giving us a unique experience. The staff were incredibly accommodating and offered recommendations on their dishes as well as the cocktails. We started with the fried calamari and the turtle soup and lemme just say, it was our first time trying turtle soup after it was recommended to us by our waitress and it was delicious! Hearty with a bit of a punch that really set up our appetite well for the rest of the meal. Portions were great for sharing and the staff made sure everything we needed was there. The creme brûlée was perfectly made with a great brûlée and fruits to pair with the custard. Plates were licked clean from how good it was! Roslyn and our waitress shared stories about Rips, the area, and the decor which made our experience here truly welcoming and familiar. Would highly recommend and visit again! read more

Had a wonderful lunch with my wife and brother in law. Great table overlooking the lake. Very friendly and informative staff. Great recommendations on food. My group has been dining at Rips for over three years. Our recent experience was the worst yet. Skip, the owner is just all out rude to his patrons. Our party of 21 arrived to him complaining as to what we were bringing into the restaurant. We were gathering for a 65th birthday lunch. We had a few minimal decorations and some cookies, which we explained would NOT be eaten. When we inquired about our upcoming reservation for Feb. 14th, he said, "we will have to see how today goes." We are a group of well-behaved, mature women. How insulting! When he saw that we came with gifts he complained that he didn't have a space to accommodate them. He said that we were too noisy. We were seated in a small interior room with another large party with children. The acoustics in the area was poor and with over 40 people in the area, yes, it was a bit noisy. Were we supposed to eat our meal in silence? After we got up to leave he said that he was reluctantly booking us for Feb. but could not book our May requested date at this time! What type of hospitality is this toward a group of ladies who spent at least $1000 for lunch. One of the ladies in the adjourning party told us that he was rude to their party also. Don't worry Mr. Westbrook, we will not be back! read more

While the food and service provided by our waiter, Adrian, have been exceptional, our experiences with the owner, Skip Westbrook, at RIPS on the lake have been consistently disappointing and unprofessional. We have been patrons of the establishment for three years, and every visit has been marred by Mr. Westbrook's inappropriate comments directed towards me. We often bring party favors for our friends, which are not consumed on the premises. Today, we had a group of 21 for a 65th birthday celebration (the reservation was made back in May) and before we were even seated, Mr. Westbrook remarked, 'What is it that you're bringing in here? I have to serve 200 guests today and have to get the tables turned around.' I expect to be served in a timely manner, regardless of the number of guests. When I inquired about making a reservation for two 6-top tables with Adrian on Endymion Saturday and Kentucky Derby Saturday, Mr. Westbrook responded, 'Well, I'll have to wait and see how today goes before I do that.' Following our luncheon, I requested that he make the reservation for February and May, and he stated that he could only accommodate the February reservation, with a maximum of 13 guests, and required us to arrive at 11 o'clock. He would consider the May reservation at a later time. His reasoning was that our group is too loud and other patrons have requested to be relocated. I find this to be inaccurate, as we have always been respectful of other diners and have received compliments from fellow patrons. Mr. Westbrook's management style appears to be ineffective, and his behavior towards us has been unacceptable. Several other guests expressed similar sentiments regarding his demeanor. As we departed the restaurant, other patrons were overheard making negative comments about Mr. Westbrook. His remarks today were the final straw. After composing myself, I returned to speak with his wife and later expressed my concerns to Mr. Westbrook, emphasizing that his behavior towards paying customers is unacceptable. If he desires a quiet atmosphere, a sign indicating as much would be more effective. It is worth noting that the restaurant is not solely owned by Mr. Westbrook, but rather by his wife and her late husband. Considering the diverse origins of our group, including Baton Rouge, Picayune, Lockport, North Hammond, and Metairie, it is disappointing that Mr. Westbrook chose to address us in such a manner. A sincere apology is warranted for his behavior towards me and my friends. I would really like an explanation as to what exactly we have done to warrant his behavior towards me and my friends! Other patrons compliment our group and ask us the name of our group, where we are from and what school we went to. We usually end up having mutual friends. They say they wish they had a group of friends to do things with like we do, so I have no clue what this man is talking about. read more
